Fitbit Premium Sleep Features
The premium Fitbit service comes with many perks, sleep features included. It gives you a more detailed score breakdown, an explanation of why it matters, as well as tips on how to improve your sleep. However, the two most important metrics Fitbit Premium gives you access to are Sleeping heart rate and Restlessness.
They can give you valuable insight into what is giving you sleep troubles. Your sleeping heart rate, for example, should typically be lower than your resting heart rate during the day. If it climbs during your REM sleep stages, it might mean you were having nightmares even if you dont remember them the next day. On the other hand, restlessness gives you an idea of how much you toss and turn in your sleep. The less you toss and turn, the better your quality of sleep and the more rested you feel on the next day.
Together, these two metrics make up the Restoration score; another Fitbit Premium-exclusive feature. It gives you a better idea of how peaceful your sleep was.

Fitbit Rolls Out Blood Oxygen Tracking With An Eye Toward Fda Clearance For Sleep Apnea Diagnosis Feature
Wearables giant Fitbit has rolled out a blood oxygen monitoring feature on some of its smartwatches, beating the Apple Watch on adding this functionality.
Fitbit, which Google agreed to buy in November, confirmed to FierceHealthcare that the company has activated a feature on its;Charge 3, Ionic, Versa, Versa Lite;and Versa 2 devices that provides users in the U.S. with blood oxygen data via the Fitbit app.
Users can see whether they are experiencing large variations in blood oxygen levels while they sleep.
The estimated oxygen variation graph;provides users with an estimate of the variability of oxygen levels in their bloodstream, also referred to as SpO2. The data are derived from a combination of the red and infrared sensors on the back of the device, according to MaryEllen Green, a spokesperson for Fitbit.
The data shown in the graph are not a relative Sp02 estimate. “Being aware of variations in the oxygen levels in your bloodstream may indicate variations in your breathing during sleep. In general, variations should be low,” Green;said.
Apple holds patents for blood oxygen monitoring but has yet to activate the feature in any of its devices, according to CNET. Back in 2018, Garmin introduced Pulse Ox with its;Vivosmart 4;activity tracker, allowing users to gauge their blood oxygen saturation levels on the spot or periodically as they sleep, CNET reported.;

What Is A Sleep Tracker
A sleep tracker is a device that monitors one or more aspects that reflect your sleep patterns, habits, stages, quality, and/or duration. This measurement is indirect, relying on more easily detectable physical signals of sleep, rather than basing it on brain activity and eye movement as they do in some formal medical tests.
Most sleep trackers look at heart rate and respiration rate, which are closely linked to sleep stages. Fitbit is one of nine companies in the FDAs digital health software precertification pilot program. At the end of the program, Fitbits software could be validated as a medical device for various health conditions including sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation.

When Is A Home Sleep Apnea Test Appropriate
Home testing is becoming more common to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, with many insurance providers considering it a cost-effective alternative and some patients preferring its convenience. But it isnt suitable for everyone.
In the past, obstructive sleep apnea could only be diagnosed one way: through a sleep study, or polysomnography.
Thats still the most comprehensive assessment. But it also involves spending a night away from home hooked to a bevy of electrodes and machinery in a clinic bed. Home sleep apnea tests have given many people a convenient, more comfortable means of evaluation.
OSA is characterized by repeated obstructed or restricted breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer, and it affects more than 25 million Americans. It leads to oxygen shortages that, in turn, result in health outcomes far worse than simply noisy breathing and unrefreshing sleep. OSA is associated with increased risk of stroke and heart disease, among other medical conditions.
Doctors, then, might recommend home testing or a formal sleep study to make sure people get the accurate diagnosis and treatment they need.

More Features Coming Soon To Sleep Score
When we tried out the Sleep Score beta, it also featured something called the Restoration index. It’s here where Fitbit indicated it will look for signs of asthma, allergies and even sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea, where breathing stops and starts during sleep, causes blood oxygen levels to fluctuate.
Fitbit is still yet to receive FDA clearance, and so it can’t actually say any tracked patterns are indicative of asthma, sleep apnea or other conditions. What it does instead – at least for now – is just report on big fluctuations.
In the app, under the ‘Learn More’ section of the Estimated Oxygen Variation graph, this is clarified further.
“Your Fitbit can’t measure the blood’s exact oxygen saturation level, but it can detect major changes. Seeing big changes is a clue that you may be experiencing breathing disturbances during sleep,” Fitbit says.
So, when could we see the current estimate transform into a more accurate metric that can feed into Fitbit Sleep Score?
Were continuing our clinical trials to collect the data to support that final application, said Heneghan back in August, discussing the company’s work with the FDA. Were still at the early stages of testing.
You can bet that when the company does receive clearance – something that’s potentially being held up by the – Sleep Score will improve even further.
