If a multiple sleep latency test is being done, you will need to stay at the sleep lab overnight and part of the next day. During this test, you will take naps every 2 hours beginning the morning after your nighttime sleep test. You will be given 20 minutes to fall asleep. If you take a nap, you will be woken up after 15 minutes. Between naps, you try to stay awake. The amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep for the naps and the sleep patterns during the naps will be recorded using most of the same equipment used during the polysomnographic studies.

TUESDAY, Aug. 3, 2021 — With apologies to William Shakespeare, this is the stuff bad dreams are made of: Sleep apnea may double your risk for sudden death.

The condition â in which a person’s airway is repeatedly blocked during sleep, causing pauses in breathing â may also increase the risk for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure, new research shows.

“This adds to the growing body of evidence that highlights the importance of screening, diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea,” said Dr. Kannan Ramar, immediate past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine .

Ramar, who reviewed the findings, said they underscore the importance of recognizing a widespread and often underdiagnosed condition that has become a growing public health concern.

For the study, a team at Penn State University reviewed 22 studies that included more than 42,000 patients worldwide. Their review revealed that people with obstructive sleep apnea had a greater risk of dying suddenly and the risk rose as patients aged.

“Our research shows this condition can be life-threatening,” principal investigator Anna Ssentongo said in a university news release. She’s an assistant professor and epidemiologist at Penn State.

The study authors said the findings underscore the urgency of treating sleep apnea.

“It means that we need more and better quality studies to show the effect of CPAP on all-cause mortality and cardiovascular outcomes,” she said.

Studies have suggested that untreated sleep apnea accelerates heart disease. This may be due to the frequent drops in blood oxygen levels during episodes of poor breathing during sleep. A clinical study showed that up to two-thirds of those with sleep apnea have significant heart disease. These may contribute to a patient having a heart attack.

Ii Diagnostic Confirmation: Are You Sure Your Patient Has Sleep Disordered Breathing

The gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea is a sleep study performed in an accredited sleep laboratory. Recently, home sleep studies using portable equipment have been approved to diagnose sleep apnea and this should allow for more widely available and convenient testing, as well as improved patient acceptance.

Several centers are studying other strategies, including performing sleep studies while patients are hospitalized just prior to discharge to allow for rapid and more convenient diagnosis and treatment initiation. Oxygen saturation monitors worn overnight, either in the hospital or at home, have been used to screen for the presence of sleep apnea but themselves do not differentiate between the types of sleep disordered breathing and therefore should be used primarily for screening.

When Is A Home Sleep Apnea Test Appropriate

Home testing is becoming more common to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, with many insurance providers considering it a cost-effective alternative and some patients preferring its convenience. But it isnt suitable for everyone.
