What Are The 5 Elements

Acupuncture for Insomnia, Depression & Anxiety

The 5 elements can be thought of as 5 phases of energy flow, associated with the seasons of nature but also reflected within our physiology. They are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. We can intuitively connect to this by observing nature and aligning ourselves to what is happening in nature:

  • Wood: corresponds to spring time, the Liver and Gall Bladder, growth, development, early life, leadership, drive, goals, any movement of upward, outwards and pushing, much like a seedling sprouting in spring, or the baby animals born this time of year. Each year we can feel that renewal of energy within us after the dark winter months. If our Wood element is out of balance, we may struggle with either too much upwards/outwards , or too little . An imbalanced Wood phase may bring on frustration or anger, as this pushing energy feels blocked.

  • Fire: corresponds to summer. The organ is Heart and Small Intestine, and is an energy of flourishing, having reached a peak, like that seedling coming into blossom or all the midsummer celebrations. We may feel flourishing when we take the time to just enjoy a summer holiday, or a fiery summer romance! An imbalanced Fire phase may feel obsessive, manic, anxious or disconnected.

  • Side Effects Of Poor Sleep

Whatever the cause of poor sleep is, there are many negative consequences related to not getting a good nights rest. Some of the more common side effects include:

    • Feeling tired even after a full night of sleep

    • Drowsiness and tiredness during the day

    • Increased irritability or anxiety

    • Increased muscle tension and tightness

Sleep At The Same Time Every Night

According to the 2019 Sleep in America® poll by the National Sleep Foundation, those who slept at the same time every night, or who only had a 1-hour deviation between their day-to-day sleep schedules, are 1.5 times more likely to be well-rested the next day.

    If a regular sleep schedule is not practical because of, say, ever-changing work shifts, you can still sneak in ways to get good sleep throughout your day. You can catch up on lost sleep by taking naps during breaks, eating at regular schedules, and blocking out all light coming into your bedroom once its time to get some shut-eye. ;

    How Does Acupuncture Work

While its sometimes considered an alternative treatment in the United States, acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine , explains Jessica Sowards, MS, LAc.

Sowards is a board certified acupuncturist and Chinese medicine and acupuncture lead at THE WELL in New York City.

Chinese medicine looks at the mind, body, and spirit as one interconnected system and strives to understand the root cause of illness or imbalance and to rectify it, she says.

Acupuncture involves inserting needles into certain points on the body located on what are known as meridians. In Chinese medicine, meridians are pathways in the body where life energy, known as Qi, flows, Sowards explains.

We view each individual body as a network, an electrical highway of points and meridians, which is informed by internal and external stimuli that are always in flux, she says. Acupuncture needles tap into this network and can affect immediate and lasting change by redirecting and harmonizing this flow.

    Are There Side Effects

Acupuncture is known to be a safe and low-risk therapy, but some mild side effects can occur. The two most common side effects are pain and bleeding at the insertion site, but bruising, dizziness, fatigue, pain, and skin rashes are also possibilities. For an unknown reason, symptoms tend to be worse at the beginning of a course of treatment and improve with subsequent sessions.

Addressing Insomnia with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

At some point you have probably had a hard time getting to sleep. The feeling can be extremely frustrating as you lay in bed, thinking about how much you need rest before facing another busy day. Or perhaps you experience nights of intensely restless sleep, waking up multiple times and ultimately not getting the hours of sleep that you need.

Often when people have trouble getting to sleep or experience restless sleep, they describe it as insomnia. While this seems like a simple term to apply to poor sleep, insomnia is a rather complicated condition characterized by difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep.

Insomnia can cause many problems, largely due to fatigue. These include low energy, difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and potentially poor performance at school or work. When insomnia lasts more than just a night or two, the secondary symptoms can become compounded over time. A person may quickly find multiple areas of their life affected, as well as their general quality of life.

Scientific research indicates that one option to treat insomnia is the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture. Surprising Mistakes Causing You To Sleep Worse According To Chinese Medicine

Having trouble falling asleep is something that I’ve struggled off and of with for years. I can go through periods where I think my insomnia is gone, only to find it creep back in again. And it can be a distressing, frustrating experience. And while clean sleeping trends may seem all the rage, it’s important to remember that sleeping tips and tricks aren’t anything new â even the most traditional medicines have insights that can help you get a good night’s sleep. If you’re like me and not comfortable with constantly relying on sleeping pills, it can be helpful to look around for other solutions.

Sometimes there are answers in unexpected places. I don’t find the idea of needles relaxing, but acupuncture has been linked to helping insomnia. “There are acupuncture points all around the body on the meridian lines that have different uses and effects,” licensed acupuncturist Joel Granik tells Bustle. “Acupressure is good for alleviating minor symptoms that affect sleep,” but don’t be afraid to look further if it’s not working. “Itâs important to note that it does not solve or treat sleep issues completely.”

If you want to know what more traditional medicine says about helping you get to sleep, here are some surprising mistakes you may not have realized you were making, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

    Insomnia And Mental Health Disorders

Sleep problems are more common among people with anxiety and depression. Theres limited research suggesting that acupuncture may help.

A 2020 study of 90 people with depression and insomnia found that 3 weekly sessions of electroacupuncture, a type of acupuncture that uses electric currents, for 8 weeks improved:

    • sleep quality
    • depression

These improvements were significantly greater when compared with sham or placebo treatment.

There havent been large, quality studies on the effects of acupuncture for people with anxiety and insomnia. However, a 2021 review of 20 studies on acupunctures effects on anxiety alone found that it improved anxiety symptoms compared with a placebo.

    Avoid Getting A Second Wind

When your eyelids get heavy, sink into bed with a good book and call it a day! Make a note of the hour that you feel the drowsiest and back up from there with all the things you need to do to wrap up your day, including getting the kids to bed. Ideally, give yourself an hour of settling into your sleep routine, avoiding screens and drift to sleep by 11pm. When we keep pushing through past this time, we get a second wind making it difficult to settle back down for several more hours.

    Acupuncture And Allergy Relief

    Acupuncture treatments for Insomnia

For some of us, allergies come and go with the seasons. For others, allergies may be a persisting issue that can impair daily functioning as well as negatively affect our mental or physical well-being. Those that suffer from chronic allergies may use acupuncture to strengthen their immune system before the start of an allergy season. If acupuncture is used in combination with other allergy medications, it may also help to reduce allergic reactions and symptoms.

    Sleep Pain And Anxiety

Tony Chon, MD, a general internal medicine specialist and expert in acupuncture at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, says that, while theres not enough evidence to prove acupuncture treats insomnia, he performs it on patients with sleep issues related to pain or anxiety.

The potential gains outweigh the minimal risks, Chon says. From clinical experience and anecdotally, acupuncture appears to be very helpful. Many of my patients communicate a sense of calm after acupuncture that helps them sleep better for several days.

    What Does The Science Say

According to modern research, acupuncture can create a notable effect on the nervous system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and immune system. While TCM philosophy believes the positive effects are related to the energetic flow of qi, Western science is divided on exactly how acupuncture works.

The lack of consensus on how this process works and no standardization of acupoints for treating specific conditions has made researching acupuncture difficult, and many studies have found mixed results. Some doctors have dismissed this practice entirely, believing any benefits are nothing more than a placebo effect. However, a growing number of randomized, controlled trials have found that acupuncture may have some scientific validity.

For example, a meta-analysis of 29 well-performed studies involving 18,000 patients found acupuncture to be an effective treatment for chronic pain, with the doctors involved noting that the results were more than just a placebo effect.

Another meta-analysis of 5 randomized, controlled trials for the treatment of pre-dementia found that acupuncture produced better outcomes than medical treatment. Even osteoporosis showed improvement using warm acupuncture or electroacupuncture over sole Western medicine in another systematic review and meta-analysis.

    Push Your Pressure Points

According to traditional Chinese medicine , your body has several pressure points that run through the energy or meridian channels inside you. Knowing where these points are, and how to manipulate them, is crucial to your health and wellbeing.

For example, applying acupressure to the HT7 point has been shown to improve insomnia symptoms. The same is true for the KD3 point , the treatment of which can also help lower blood pressure. Acupressure involves applying deep, firm pressure with your thumb on the abovementioned areas, and doing so repeatedly for several minutes.

    Is Acupuncture Right For Me

If youre having trouble sleeping, talk with your doctor first to rule out any serious underlying problems. Then discuss first-line treatment methods that may be more effective or cheaper and easier to implement than acupuncture. If you do decide to try acupuncture, the risks of complication are generally low. However, its best to ask your doctor to recommend a trusted professional before you book an appointment.

    Acupuncture And Digestive Support

When a technique is available that helps to enhance and restore your bodyâs own natural healing properties, the list of benefits continues. With that being said, another benefit to acupuncture is that it helps with digestive support. As the other functions of your body are being supported by the balancing of energetic fields, you are also supporting a healthy function of your digestive system as well as the organs associated with it. This can help specifically with gastrointestinal issues such as frequent stomach ages, or severe, long-term health issues that have not been properly addressed such as gallstones, inflammatory bowel disease , or Crohnâs Disease.
