Is It Right For Me
If you are considering acupuncture but still have some doubts, it may be worth scheduling a consultation with a licensed acupuncturist to go over any lingering questions or concerns you may have. During these one hour appointments, practitioners will go over your health history, do a full assessment, and help you determine if this type of treatment is right for you. If you have a bleeding disorder, fear of needles, use a pacemaker, or have a seizure disorder, you will likely need to look for another type of therapy.
How Do I Prepare For My Appointment
Most acupuncturists will recommend having something to eat within 1-2 hours before your appointment to prevent nausea and feeling lightheaded. They also will advise you to avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. If you will be having your session in a group setting, it may be helpful to wear loose, comfortable clothing, but gowns are typically provided for private sessions.

How Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Can Help
Many patients are looking for non-drug alternatives to treating insomnia and sleep disorders since sleep drugs often come with their own side effects. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs provide a natural way to treat sleep issues, and can have more lasting effects than other alternatives.
Some of the benefits include:
Promoting more restful sleep by regulating the nervous system
Increasing energy and reducing fatigue
Improving memory and concentration
Improving digestion and reducing headaches
Many studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective in treating insomnia. It can replace drugs used for insomnia or help reduce the need for sleep medication.
A meta-analysis that looked at the effectiveness of acupuncture for insomnia found that acupuncture was significantly better at improving various sleep parameters related to sleep quality and duration when compared with no treatment, sham acupuncture , or medications. Additionally, the combination of acupuncture and other treatment modalities appeared more effective than those other treatments alone.
Acupuncture helps balance the nervous system and activate various neurotransmitters in the brain. It has also been found to help increase specific hormones that promote sleep .
Chinese herbs are often used along with acupuncture for insomnia and sleep issues. There are several commonly used herbal formulas that address different symptoms and root causes of insomnia.
What Does The Science Say
According to modern research, acupuncture can create a notable effect on the nervous system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and immune system. While TCM philosophy believes the positive effects are related to the energetic flow of qi, Western science is divided on exactly how acupuncture works.
The lack of consensus on how this process works and no standardization of acupoints for treating specific conditions has made researching acupuncture difficult, and many studies have found mixed results. Some doctors have dismissed this practice entirely, believing any benefits are nothing more than a placebo effect. However, a growing number of randomized, controlled trials have found that acupuncture may have some scientific validity.
For example, a meta-analysis of 29 well-performed studies involving 18,000 patients found acupuncture to be an effective treatment for chronic pain, with the doctors involved noting that the results were more than just a placebo effect.
Another meta-analysis of 5 randomized, controlled trials for the treatment of pre-dementia found that acupuncture produced better outcomes than medical treatment. Even osteoporosis showed improvement using warm acupuncture or electroacupuncture over sole Western medicine in another systematic review and meta-analysis.

What Are The 5 Elements
The 5 elements can be thought of as 5 phases of energy flow, associated with the seasons of nature but also reflected within our physiology. They are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. We can intuitively connect to this by observing nature and aligning ourselves to what is happening in nature:
Wood: corresponds to spring time, the Liver and Gall Bladder, growth, development, early life, leadership, drive, goals, any movement of upward, outwards and pushing, much like a seedling sprouting in spring, or the baby animals born this time of year. Each year we can feel that renewal of energy within us after the dark winter months. If our Wood element is out of balance, we may struggle with either too much upwards/outwards , or too little . An imbalanced Wood phase may bring on frustration or anger, as this pushing energy feels blocked.
Fire: corresponds to summer. The organ is Heart and Small Intestine, and is an energy of flourishing, having reached a peak, like that seedling coming into blossom or all the midsummer celebrations. We may feel flourishing when we take the time to just enjoy a summer holiday, or a fiery summer romance! An imbalanced Fire phase may feel obsessive, manic, anxious or disconnected.

What Are The Conventional Treatments For Insomnia
Good sleep hygiene is beneficial for all types of insomnia. Good sleep hygiene includes setting a regular sleep routine, going to bed and rising at the same time each day, optimising the sleep environment for example ensuring the bedroom is dark enough, avoiding stimulants or substances that disrupt sleep, ensuring adequate exercise during the day and exposure to natural light and darkness, and keeping pre-bedtime activities like smartphone use to a minimum. Sometimes practicing good sleep hygiene and reducing external factors like stress might be enough to rectify some cases of acute and mild insomnia. Any underlying conditions or health issues contributing to insomnia will be also need to be investigated and addressed.
Where needed your doctor or pharmacist may prescribe medications to aid sleep onset especially if the insomnia is affecting your daytime functioning. However these medications can only be used for short term as they may have addictive properties and tend to lose their effectiveness over time. Cognitive behavioural therapy is often used to promote good sleep habits and avoid behviours or thoughts that worsen insomnia. This catergory includes stimulus control therapy, relaxation exercises, sleep restriction, and light therapy.
Avoid Getting A Second Wind
When your eyelids get heavy, sink into bed with a good book and call it a day! Make a note of the hour that you feel the drowsiest and back up from there with all the things you need to do to wrap up your day, including getting the kids to bed. Ideally, give yourself an hour of settling into your sleep routine, avoiding screens and drift to sleep by 11pm. When we keep pushing through past this time, we get a second wind making it difficult to settle back down for several more hours.

Some Acupuncture And Auriculotherapy Approaches May Be Beneficial For Insomnia
Posted May 10, 2019
Acupuncture is a widely used treatment of insomnia in countries where Chinese medicine is practiced, including the United States, Canada, and most western European countries. The analgesic and sedating effects of stimulating specific acupuncture points are probably mediated by the release of endogenous opioid peptides in the brain . The specific acupuncture points stimulated depend on the energetic imbalance that is believed to cause insomnia. Like many complementary and alternative approaches, the absence of standardized acupuncture treatment points for treating insomnia has interfered with efforts to design rigorously controlled double-blind studies.
A systematic review of all studies on acupuncture for insomnia published in the English language through 2002 identified few studies suitable for analysis because most studies had not used formal randomized, double-blind procedures . Most studies reviewed included small numbers of patients who reported insomnia symptoms of varying duration and severity. The reviewers concluded that acupuncture may be an effective intervention for the relief of insomnia . A subsequent systematic review also found inconclusive evidence for acupuncture in insomnia due to the small number of sham-controlled studies, differences in study design .
Push Your Pressure Points
According to traditional Chinese medicine , your body has several pressure points that run through the energy or meridian channels inside you. Knowing where these points are, and how to manipulate them, is crucial to your health and wellbeing.
For example, applying acupressure to the HT7 point has been shown to improve insomnia symptoms. The same is true for the KD3 point , the treatment of which can also help lower blood pressure. Acupressure involves applying deep, firm pressure with your thumb on the abovementioned areas, and doing so repeatedly for several minutes.

How Does Acupuncture Benefit Insomnia
Acupuncture has been used to treat insomnia for centuries. It was known to do so by balancing the mind and body and restoring physiological functioning. Research is showing a variety of mechanisms that contribute to these effects. It has been shown to do this by:
- Increasing melatonin secretion, the hormone that regulates sleep cycles
- Increasing nitric oxide content, helping promote normal function of the brain, which helps relax the mind and improve sleep
- Increasing blood flow, which can relax the body and mind, improving sleep quality
- Reducing sympathetic nervous system activity, the fight of flight response. Calming the body and increasing relaxation
- regulating levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine, GABA and neuropeptide Y hence altering the brainss mood chemistry to help to increase relaxation and reduce tension
And Poor Quality Sleep
For some people, getting to sleep may not be difficult but sleeping lightly and waking up feeling unrested and groggy can be just as bad as no sleep at all. Acupuncture improved sleep quality scores in 30 research studies involving 2363 patients. Deeper and more restful sleep has been correlated with improved cognitive function, improved mood, better immune function, and more efficient metabolism. Most patients report improved sleep as quickly as the first night after treatment, but sustained results will likely require a series of regular treatments for maximum benefit.

Sleep At The Same Time Every Night
According to the 2019 Sleep in America® poll by the National Sleep Foundation, those who slept at the same time every night, or who only had a 1-hour deviation between their day-to-day sleep schedules, are 1.5 times more likely to be well-rested the next day.
If a regular sleep schedule is not practical because of, say, ever-changing work shifts, you can still sneak in ways to get good sleep throughout your day. You can catch up on lost sleep by taking naps during breaks, eating at regular schedules, and blocking out all light coming into your bedroom once its time to get some shut-eye.
