Sleep++ is the most basic of the available sleep apps, but it’s free to download and has no hidden extra costs. You can choose to have your sleep tracked in auto mode or manual mode.

Auto mode will automatically track your sleep, using your movements or lack thereof to know when you’re in dreamland. If you use manual mode, you’ll have to tell the app when you’re going to sleep and when you wake up.

Press “Start Sleeping” and then “Stop Sleeping” on your Apple Watch or in the iPhone app.

You won’t get much data from this app, just one bar showing you how deep your sleep was. However, it’s totally free and a great place to start your sleep-tracking routine.

Wearing It To Bed: Apple Watch Vs Fitbit

Even if sleep tracking is not your priority, it is an added bonus not to have to remember to take off and plug in your watch every night before you go to bed. This is where the Fitbit wins. The battery lasts much longer and we already discussed how superior its sleep tracking capabilities are.

If you do decide that you want to wear the Apple Watch through the night, you have to make sure that you leave a couple of hours in the morning to get it fully charged. Your battery will likely be almost dead by the time you wake up. The Apple Watch does have a low-power mode that you could opt to use if you could not charge it, but when you put it in that mode, it loses most of its capabilities besides telling the time.

No matter which device you have, if you decide to wear it to bed there are some safety precautions that you have to keep in mind. You want to make sure that you keep the wristband on the device loose while you are sleeping so it does not cut off your circulation.

Of course, you do not want the watch falling off. If it does you will lose a full night of sleep tracking. However, if it is too tight and gets stuck between you and the mattress, it can be quite dangerous.

The Apple Watch 5 has plenty of potential when it comes to tracking your movement or logging your runs and walks. With each iteration, Apple adds more functionalities to this smartwatch. And now, sleep tracking is one of the features to join the herd.

Though you could track your sleep patterns before, Apple hasnt integrated these functions by default until watchOS7 and iOS 14. Although this feature does come in handy, it’s not impressive, at least for now.

Hence, we thought of compiling two ways to track your sleep habits and patterns using the Apple Watch. The first one uses the native app, while in the second method, we explore a third-party app that gives a whole new meaning to sleep tracking.

Getting The Watch Ready To Sleep:

How to track your sleep with your Apple Watch Apple Support

Now, as it stands today, actually getting the Apple Watch to track sleep is a rather long affair. Unlike Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung, and wellevery other wearable ever the Apple Watch wont actually track sleep by simply wearing it and heading to sleep. Instead, you need to fully detail your nights intentions to the parents, as if you were a teenage boy about to take a girl out to the prom.

So, assuming you got everything all updated on both your phone and watch, then you need to open the Sleep app on your watch. This is what tells the watch that you want to do sleep things on both the watch and the phone. It does seem you can do some of this via the Watch configuration app, but you cant do all of it. More on that in a second.

On the Apple Watch, youll open the Sleep app, and the first thing itll ask is for your sleep goal. This is basically telling it how many hours you want to sleep each night:

Next, is the toggle to actually enable sleep tracking. This is the part that basically keeps track of how much you sleep each night:

After that, youll toggle the Sleep Mode on the watch. This piece turns off the watch display unless tapped. So the previous setting enables data tracking, and this setting turns off the display as well as automatically enabling Do Not Disturb based on your planned sleep time.

The Autosleep Tracker App

The AutoSleep;Tracker app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep; if you dont, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didnt wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.

The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bedjust tap Yes or No.

To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.

Before you use AutoSleep, youll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap Settings and, on the following screen, scroll down to the Configure section and tap Wizard.

Here, you see two toggles: I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality and If I Dont Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.

You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you dont wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time youre not wearing your Watch.

Tap OK to continue.

On the next screen, you can set a night hour, which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep bank and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

Update Your Full Schedule

  • Open the Health app and tap Sleep.
  • Tap a schedule in Full Schedule & Options.
  • Tap Edit under the schedule you would like to update.
  • Tap the Days Active and drag the curved slider to set Bedtime and Wake Up times. The slider turns orange if the schedule does not meet your sleep goal.
  • Tap Wake Up Alarm to turn on an alarm and adjust your alarm sound, volume, and haptics.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.
  • You can also turn off your sleep schedule as needed. In the Health app, tap Browse > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options. Then tap Sleep Schedule at the top of the screen to turn your schedule off or on.

    How To Manually Control Sleep Mode On Apple Watch

    Like on iPhone, you can toggle Sleep Mode on and off on Apple Watch by bringing up the Control Center from the bottom of the screen.

    If Sleep Mode is active on your Apple Watch, turn the Digital Crown until your normal watch face appears on the screen.

    What Do You Need To Access The Apple Watch Sleep App

    Youll need an Apple Watch that is capable of running watchOS 7, the last major software update set to roll out for Apples smartwatch. Youll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14, which requires an iPhone 6s or later.

    New Faces Workouts And Washing Up

    Apples watchOS 7 is also finally giving users the ability to fully customize their watch faces and even snag them from third-party websites for share them with friends. If you see a watch face that you like on a website, for instance, youll be able to press the Add Apple Watch Face button.

    The face will then appear in your Watch app and then on your Watch. Developers can offer preconfigured watch faces, and users will be able to share watch faces across social media platforms.

    Apple is also updating the Workout app in watchOS 7 by adding a Dance setting , so you can track dance workouts. The app will be able to determine if youre dancing with just your arms, your legs, or both at the same time. Other new workouts include Functional Strength Training and Cool Downs.

    Additionally, Apple is renaming the Activity app in watchOS 7 and iOS to Fitness, since Apple says the app is adding a lot more to track your workouts.

    Finally, the Apple Watch will be able to detect when youre washing your hands, and let you know if youve done so long enough. The watch will detect when you start washing using its built-in accelerometer and listening for the sound of running water and splashing.

    The watch will tell you how long youve washed your hands, and when you finish, after 20 seconds, youll get a quick notification telling you youre all set.
