What Else Do I Need To Know About Sleep Tracking With My Apple Watch

As with any form of Apple Watch tracking, sleep tracking works best if you’re wearing your Apple Watch on the correct wrist and comfortably. If the watch is too loose, the accelerometer might register too much movement from you, even when you’re asleep. Wear it too tightly, and you’re probably going to feel somewhat uncomfortable trying to sleep.

As well as that, you may need to change when you recharge your Apple Watch. You need your watch battery to be at around 30% or more for it to track your sleep all night successfully. Otherwise, the Watch will tell you to charge it up beforehand.

It monitors your sleep quality and duration and includes an automatic or manual mode to record sleep.

Just wear your Apple Watch to bed for automatic mode to work. For manual mode, let Sleep++ know when you are ready to sleep and when you wake up.

The app does include ads, but if you wish to remove them, you can pay $1.99. The ads are not annoying and are at the bottom of the page.

While the app doesn’t display your sleep data in a visually appealing way, it does provide great insight. You can see your restful sleep, restlessness, and awake time. 

The trends section of the app is the most visually appealing.

  • Tracks sleep in 3 dimensions: awake, restful, and restless.
  • Works with Apple Watch with watchOS 5.2 or later.
  • Sleep++ integrates with your iPhone’s Health App.
  • This includes your sleep time, time for waking up and falling asleep, heart rate, meeting your sleep goal, bedtime consistency, and blood oxygen levels.

And note, you can only track your blood oxygen level if you have at least an Apple Watch Series 6. 

Does The Apple Watch Have Enough Battery To Track Sleep

Battery life has been pointed to as a reason why Apple might have been reluctant to offer its own sleep tracking app in the past. Apple still states an 18 hour battery life for its smartwatch, which hasn’t changed since the first Watch. Any battery improvements have been canceled out by features like the Apple Watch 5’s always-on screen.

To make sure you have enough battery to track sleep through the night, Apple requires your watch to be charged to at least 30% to enable it. 

If you don’t, the Watch will prompt you to charge before going to bed. When it’s got enough juice, your phone will alert you that it’s ready to join you in bed. In our time we found that sleep tracking sucked up around 20% battery on average, so it’s definitely going to impact how much battery you’re left with in the morning.

Fortunately, a number of third-party applications pick up the slack. After trying quite a few, we think the best two are and . They’re reliable, attractive, informative, and best of all, they track sleep automatically. All you need to do is wear your Apple Watch to bed.

How To Track Sleep On Apple Watch And Change Settings

Steps to set up Sleep on Apple Watch:

Open the Sleep app on the Apple watch or the Health app on iPhone and on-screen instructions will be shown on setting up. To change or turn off the next wake-up alarm: Open the Sleep app, tap on current bedtime, and either click on turn off the alarm or set a new time. This is only applicable to the immediate next wake up alarm, after which it resumes back to the normal schedule. To add or change a sleep schedule: Open the Sleep app, tap on Full Schedule, and select between ‘Change a sleep schedule’, ‘Add a sleep schedule’, ‘Change your sleep goal’, and ‘Change Wind Down time’. After this, set the days for your schedule, adjust wake up time and bedtime, set alarm options and/or remove or cancel a sleep schedule. How to track sleep on Apple watch: Open the Sleep app on the Apple watch and scroll down to the amount of sleep from the previous night and the sleep average trend over the last 14 days. To change sleep options, open Settings on the Apple watch device, tap Sleep and choose between the following options: Sleep Mode, Showtime, Sleep Tracking, Charging reminders, and Wake to haptic taps. These settings allow you to customize your experience with the Apple Sleep feature. The changes in these settings can be accessed and modified through the Health app on iPhone as well.

What Do You Need To Access The Apple Watch Sleep App

You’ll need an Apple Watch that is capable of running watchOS 7, the last major software update set to roll out for Apple’s smartwatch. You’ll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14, which requires an iPhone 6s or later.

So if you’ve got an original Apple Watch or a Series 1 or 2 model, you’re sadly out of luck here. 

Sleep Data Is Modest And Not Particularly Actionable

Apple’s sleep tracking app interface is simple. Tell it your preferred “bedtime” schedule — in my case, 11 p.m. to just before 6 a.m. — and it will be looking out for sleep during those times . It turns out that you must set up tracking schedules to cover each individual day of the week or use separate schedules for weekdays and weekends. I didn’t realize until too late that the Watch hadn’t recorded data for two full nights because I hadn’t set up a separate weekend schedule to cover them.

Assuming the Watch gathers your data properly, you’ll see a very modest display of data, including a bar representing your total “time asleep,” the timestamps indicating sleep start and end points, and a bar chart covering the last 14 days. If you want a deeper dive, you can open the Health app on an iPhone to see your “average time in bed” and “average time asleep” — and under some conditions, a correlation of your overnight heart rate data with your sleeping schedule. When I checked the Health app, one day the heart rate data was there, but another day it disappeared from the app’s list of Highlights and I couldn’t find it.

Apple has suggested it’s providing little data to keep users from obsessing over their sleep schedules, as that might inadvertently generate even more anxiety or restlessness. I’m still not sure whether that’s truly an act of kindness or just a convenient excuse for underwhelming functionality.
