Apples initial hesitation to share its sleep tracking software has been attributed to concerns about battery life. Apple Watch Sleep Tracking has a battery life of 18 hours, which hasnt altered since the original watch. Any battery improvements have been balanced out by innovations like the Apple Watch 5s always-on screen.
Before monitoring sleep throughout the night, Apple requires that your watch be charged at least 30%.
It will notify you to charge your watch before going to sleep if you havent done so already. When your phone is fully charged, it will alert you when ready to join you in bed. During our tests, sleep tracking consumes roughly 20% of our battery. As a result, the amount of battery you have will be affected in the morning.

Now that we understand sleep, lets look at Apples implementation of sleep tracking. Lets start with the good.
Apple has added a feature called Wind Down which assists you in establishing a bedtime routine. It can launch shortcuts and home automations that help you relax and make it easier to fall asleep once your head hits the pillow.
In my opinion, this may be the most under-appreciated announcement from Apples sleep tracking demo.
You may be different, but for me, sleep doesnt just happen. Unless I am physically and mentally exhausted by the time I go to bed every night, I need some time to transition. Turning down the lights, listening to some chill music, writing in my journal, and reading are all things that I do as part of my evening routine to help me go to bed on time and wake up the next day feeling refreshed. So I really like how Wind Down can help you get there by automatically triggering things to get you ready.
I do think some people who are used to using their devices until the moment they fall asleep will be annoyed by this. But from a health perspective, its a big plus.
The new haptic alarm mode is a welcome addition. While new, gentler wake up sounds are great, Ive been using a haptic alarm with the Sleep Cycle app for awhile now and I absolutely love it. I was a little skeptical that I could be woken up by a haptic alarm only on my wrist at first, but its been working well for me.

How To Turn Any Apple Watch Into A Sleep Tracker
Apple didn’t include sleep tracking in the Watch Series 5. Fortunately, just about any Apple Watch model can track your sleep. Here’s how.

Edit Your Sleep Schedule On Your Apple Watch
If you need to update your sleep schedule, you can make changes to your full schedule or for Next Wake Up Only. With Next Wake Up Only, the changes you make apply only to the following day. Changes made to your full schedule apply to all future days.
If you’re up before your scheduled Wake Up time, you can exit sleep mode. Turn the Digital Crown to unlock your Apple Watch. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Sleep app icon.

Will Tracking Make You Anxious
There is one caveat: If you tend to be anxious, tracking your sleep may not be helpful, cautions Dr. Lance.
Some people can become obsessed with their device, checking their data constantly and worrying about whether its normal to awaken during the night.
But we all awaken at night, she says. The question is, do we fall back asleep OK, and can we function OK the next day?
Wanting to track your biometric data, however, is generally a good thing, Dr. Lance believes. It means youre more likely to follow doctors orders and do what it takes to maximize your well-being.

Apple Watch Series 7 Has A Qwerty Keyboard
The Apple Watch Series 7 should be easier to type on.
The Apple Watch has a new QWERTY keyboard that takes advantage of its larger screen, which is about 20% bigger than the Series 6, allowing you to type similarly to how you would on a phone.
What’s new: A full-size keyboard means that you aren’t limited to sending a canned response to a text, scribbling a quick note or dictating a message, as is the case with the Apple Watch Series 6.
How you’ll use it: The Apple Watch Series 7’s QWERTY keyboard lets you tap each key to type, or use Apple’s QuickPath feature to swipe between letters without lifting your finger. You’ll still want to use your phone for messages longer than a short sentence, but it still generally makes it easier to text using the watch.
The bottom line: The Series 7’s QWERTY keyboard makes it easier to send longer and more complex messages that are uncomfortable to scribble or too private to dictate. It’s another example of how the Apple Watch has evolved to become better at working independently of your phone in the years since its launch.
Third-party Apple Watch apps like FlickType and WatchKey already allow you to type on your Apple Watch, but having it as a native option on the watch results in a smoother experience.

What Can Apple Watch Do That Fitbit Cant
The Apple Watch really does make a great addition to your iPhone. There are many apps that you may have on your iPhone that also have apps on the Apple Watch, which gives you some additional capabilities that the Fitbit does not provide.
While there are Fitbit devices that can show you notifications, even text or call, it really does not compare to the Apple Watch text and calling that you can fully operate separate from your phone

With the latest update, the Apple Watch has a built-in sleep tracker to monitor and record your sleeping patterns. Here’s how to use it.
Insomnia is a common problem, especially these days with worries about the coronavirus, politics, and the economy. A lack of sufficient sleep can affect not just your personal life but your professional one. It’s difficult to concentrate on work and be productive without a healthy and consistent number of hours of sleep each night. But how can you tell the amount of sleep you’re actually getting?
As you wear your watch at night, the tracker records the actual time you’re asleep and how much total sleep you get. The next morning, the Sleep app shows you the periods of sleep time during the night and keeps a daily and weekly record of your sleep pattern. Here’s how it works.
Sleep tracking on an Apple Watch requires a Series 3, 4, 5, or 6 with watchOS 7 or higher, and an iPhone 6S or later with iOS 14 or higher. Confirm those requirements. How Do I Make My Iphone Sleep Automatically

Getting The Watch Ready To Sleep:
Now, as it stands today, actually getting the Apple Watch to track sleep is a rather long affair. Unlike Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung, and wellevery other wearable ever the Apple Watch wont actually track sleep by simply wearing it and heading to sleep. Instead, you need to fully detail your nights intentions to the parents, as if you were a teenage boy about to take a girl out to the prom.
So, assuming you got everything all updated on both your phone and watch, then you need to open the Sleep app on your watch. This is what tells the watch that you want to do sleep things on both the watch and the phone. It does seem you can do some of this via the Watch configuration app, but you cant do all of it. More on that in a second.
On the Apple Watch, youll open the Sleep app, and the first thing itll ask is for your sleep goal. This is basically telling it how many hours you want to sleep each night:

Next, is the toggle to actually enable sleep tracking. This is the part that basically keeps track of how much you sleep each night:
After that, youll toggle the Sleep Mode on the watch. This piece turns off the watch display unless tapped. So the previous setting enables data tracking, and this setting turns off the display as well as automatically enabling Do Not Disturb based on your planned sleep time.
How To Set Up A Sleep Schedule
As we mentioned, the primary aim of the Apple Watch is to help you prepare for a good nights sleep. And for those looking to get more rest, sleep hygiene is one of the most important factors.
While that can be environmental it also means winding down before bed without screen time, and having consistent bed and wake times. And this is a particular focus of the Apple Watch.
The iPhone and Apple Watch both have a feature, which lets you set sleep and wakeup times for each night of the week.
Half an hour before this time your iPhone and Watch go into a pared down Bedtime mode, where the screen dims and notifications are muted so you can start to decompress and chill before bed.
To set this up you need to go to the Health app on iPhone.

Making The Switch: Fitbit Or Apple Watch
If you are looking to only own one of the two options , you need to figure out if what you mainly want is a smartwatch with impressive technology or an all around fitness and wellness tracker. If you are looking for a smartwatch, Apple really does have some of the most impressive technology on the market. The variety of apps and features that come with the Apple Watch are really great. However, if you are looking for an all around fitness and wellness tracker, right now the Fitbit is probably your best bet, especially the Sense which has some of the strongest tech that Fitbit has to offer.
Data Tracking With Pillow
At the end of a sleep session, Pillow will tell you the number of hours you slept. Swipe down the screen to see the quality of sleep, both for the previous night and past nights. Swipe further to see how much time you spent in each cycle of sleep and how long you were in bed versus how long you were asleep.
You can also launch Pillow on your iPhone to run it from there or just see what data it records and how it works with your Apple Watch.
In the settings for Pillow on your iPhone, you can opt to always sync the data with the Health app, or you can manually sync it by tapping the Sync button in the Apple Watch app. After the data has synced, open the Health app and segue to the section for Sleep. By default, the app shows all data from any sleep app for which you’ve given permission.

How To Set Up Sleep Tracking On Apple Watch
1. Ensure your Apple Watch is on watchOS 7 or later and your iPhone is running iOS 14 or later.
2. In the Health app on your iPhone, set up Sleep. You can also go through this process on the Apple Watch itself in the Sleep app.
3. Firstly, choose the duration of sleep – this is a Sleep goal but it isn’t tracked in the iPhone Activity app like your rings . We’ve chosen eight hours.
4. Next, you set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake up. There are actually a bunch of options here, so go through them carefully. Do you need to set it for every day, or just weekdays.
5. You’ll need to set a relaxation time before you go to bed – you can also choose to link this to a Siri Shortcut to do other automation such as turning off a light at home, for example. Wind Down can also be linked to a music playlist, for example.
6. You can decide whether or not to set an alarm and how you want it to sound. Note that this won’t replace your existing alarms on Apple Watch .
Your alarm will sound on your iPhone if you don’t have your Apple Watch on and on your Watch if you do have it on. You can fully configure the alarm sound as well. If your Watch is set to silent, it will just vibrate.
7. You can see your sleep patterns in the Health app on iPhone – view by week or month. You can definitely see the gaps in my sleep here. As you can see, a small child is not conducive to meeting your sleep goal!
