How To Fall Asleep
With many seniors experiencing symptoms of insomnia and other sleep disturbances, learning how to effectively manage sleep disorders is important to other areas of health.
While insomnia can negatively affect an individuals quality of life, there are ways to manage and treat the sleep condition that can make sleep a more restful experience.
Nasal Decongestants Or Oral Decongestants
Decongestants can come in handy when youre suffering from a stuffy nose. They can be taken as a nasal spray, like , or as an oral decongestant, like . But one downside is that decongestants can cause insomnia.
If youre using a decongestant, its probably just for a short period of time, so you may decide to push through the nighttime annoyance until you dont need it anymore. You could also consider an alternative, drug-free option like a saline nasal spray or an antihistamine nasal spray like .
Statins For Other Psychiatric Disorders
There have been several clinical trials of statins for delirium prevention or treatment in critically ill patients. Based on the neuroinflammatory hypothesis of delirium, which is characterized by acute release of inflammatory mediators during critical illness, the pleiotropic effects of statins may prevent or attenuate delirium due to their effects on neutrophil migration, BBB injury, and inflammation . However, a review of the literature regarding the use of statins for delirium prevention or treatment reveals no clear overall conclusions. Differential effects of statins on neuroinflammation during delirium may be due to treatment with lipophilic vs. hydrophilic statins. The current study demonstrated that the use of a hydrophilic statin was associated with reduced delirium incidence compared with a lipophilic statin , but the reverse has also been found . A recent comprehensive meta-analysis found that statins did not reduce the incidence of delirium in physically ill patients . There are many confounding factors that might account for these inconsistent results, including heterogeneity of study designs, variability of patient populations, the multifactorial nature of delirium, inconsistent delirium assessments, limited study power and lack of information on co-administration of other neuropsychiatric medications. Therefore, well-designed studies on delirium are still needed.

Dosage For Prevention Of Heart Disease
- Typical starting dosage: 1020 mg taken once per day.
- Typical maintenance dosage: 1080 mg taken once per day.
Atorvastatin hasnt been approved for use in children younger than 18 years for the prevention of heart disease.
The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This increases your risk for side effects.
Your doctor may start you on a lowered dosage or a different medication schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.
Muscle Pain And Weakness
The most common side effect is muscle pain and weakness, a condition called rhabdomyolysis, most likely due to the depletion of Co-Q10, a nutrient that supports muscle function. Dr. Beatrice Golomb of San Diego, California is currently conducting a series of studies on statin side effects. The industry insists that only 2-3 percent of patients get muscle aches and cramps but in one study, Golomb found that 98 percent of patients taking Lipitor and one-third of the patients taking Mevachor suffered from muscle problems.4 A message board devoted to Lipitor at forum.ditonline.com contained more than 800 posts, many detailing severe side effects. The Lipitor board at www.rxlist.com contains more than 2,600 posts .
The test for muscle wasting or rhabdomyolysis is elevated levels of a chemical called creatine kinase . But many people experience pain and fatigue even though they have normal CK levels.5
John Altrocchi took Mevacor for three years without side effects then he developed calf pain so severe he could hardly walk. He also experienced episodes of temporary memory loss.
Active people are much more likely to develop problems from statin use than those who are sedentary. In a study carried out in Austria, only six out of 22 athletes with familial hypercholesterolemia were able to endure statin treatment.9 The others discontinued treatment because of muscle pain.

Statins Side Effects: Insomnia Or Sleep Disturbances Could Be Caused By The Drug
It is believed there are between seven and 10 million Britons using statins. Most people take the cholesterol-lowering drug to prevent or delay their first stroke or heart attack. While use of the drug is usually well tolerated, some complications involving sleep disturbances may occur.
In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, sleep changes from statin therapy were further investigated.
The study noted: Accumulating databases from the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System suggest that statin use is associated with an increased risk of sleep disturbances including insomnia.
In other studies hallucinations and nightmares during statin therapy were also observed.
There are few clinical trials evaluating the effect of statins on sleep as a primary outcome.
Three of them suggested an essential effect of statins on sleep quality, while two others presented no impact of statin treatment on sleep.

A Classic Example Of Drug
A reader recently asked this question:
Q. Can any of the following meds keep me awake at night: metformin, losartan, meloxicam or amphetamine salts?
A. It always amazes us when we get a question with such an obvious answer. Why didnt the prescriber say something like: insomnia might be a side effect of amphetamine, so be prepared for such a reaction and get back in touch if it becomes a problem.
Amphetamine-type medications are considered stimulants and are often prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Some familiar brand names include Adderall, Dexedrine, Mydayis and Vyvanse.
Other side effects of such medications beyond sleeping difficulties may include loss of appetite, rapid pulse, anxiety, irritability, dry mouth and digestive distress.
The Causes Of Insomnia In Older Adults
As people age, changes to normal sleep patterns may occur. Seniors may produce less melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep cycles and circadian rhythms. This often results in lighter, more fragmented sleep during the night.
While the normal aging process can cause symptoms of insomnia, there are other factors that may result in an inability to fall asleep naturally.

Effect Of Statin Therapy On Polysomnography Findings
The impact of statin therapy on PSG indices of sleep was reported in 9 treatment arms. Overall, statin therapy had no significant effect on total sleep duration , sleep efficiency , entries to stage I or latency to stage I . These effect sizes were robust, and iteratively removing each study from the meta-analysis did not change the significance of the results . In contrast, statin therapy significantly reduced wake time and number of awakenings . These effect sizes were not sensitive to any single trial, apart from the sensitivity of pooled effect size for the wake time to the study by Kamei et al. .
Risk Of Bias Assessment
A systematic assessment of bias in the included studies was carried out using the Cochrane criteria . The items used for the assessment of each study were as follows: adequacy of sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding, addressing of dropouts , selective outcome reporting, and other potential sources of bias. According to the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook, a judgment of yes indicated low risk of bias, while no indicated high risk of bias. Labeling an item as unclear indicated an unclear or unknown risk of bias .
What Should You Do If Your Medications Are Causing Insomnia
Sleep is important to your health, so insomnia that doesnt go away isnt something to overlook.
If you think your medications are causing insomnia, you should talk to your healthcare provider about it. They may:
Recommend an alternative medication
Recommend a supplement like melatonin to help promote sleep
Prescribe a stronger medication to help you sleep
When To Take Atorvastatin Morning Or Night
Take atorvastatin once a day. You can choose to take it at any time, as long as you stick to the same time every day. Sometimes doctors may recommend taking it in the evening. This is because your body makes most cholesterol at night.
When to take Lipitor morning or night?
- Most statins should be taken once every 24 hours. Depending on the particular medication and dosage, you may need to take your statin twice a day. Certain statins work better when taken with a meal. Others work best when theyre taken at night.

Side Effects Requiring Immediate Medical Attention
Along with its needed effects, atorvastatin may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking atorvastatin:
Less common or rare
- muscle cramps, pain, stiffness, swelling, or weakness
- puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
- tightness in the chest
- Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
- large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
- red skin lesions, often with a purple center sore
- red, irritated eyes
- sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips
Drug Interactions Of Statins
Metabolism of statins is complex, and begins with absorption, followed by hepatic uptake, metabolism, and elimination . Individual characteristics and multiple transporters acting on each phase interact with concomitant medications, leading to changes in serum concentrations of statins, may change. Among multiple pathways, the role of the cytochrome P-450 system has been most commonly described . Most statins are metabolized by CYP 3A4. Exceptions include fluvastatin and rosuvastatin, which are largely metabolized by CYP 2C9 , and pravastatin, which is mainly metabolized by renal clearance . Antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and cognitive enhancers that are metabolized by CYP isoenzymes can increase serum statin concentrations by competing for catabolism and vice versa . Also, inhibition and enhancement of the CYP isoenzymes by psychotropic medications can increase or decrease serum concentrations of statins. One case report described a 79-year-old female prescribed nefazodone 300 mg daily for 8 years, who then took simvastatin 40 mg daily, and subsequently developed rhabdomyolysis, perhaps attributable to potent inhibition of CYP 3A4 by nefazodone . CYP status must be evaluated when combining antidepressants and statins .

Atorvastatin May Interact With Other Medications
Atorvastatin oral tablet can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. An interaction is when a substance changes the way a drug works. This can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well.
To help avoid interactions, your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully. Be sure to tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, or herbs youre taking. To find out how this drug might interact with something else youre taking, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Examples of drugs that can cause interactions with atorvastatin are listed below.
How To Take Atorvastatin
- Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about atorvastatin and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.
- Take atorvastatin once each day. There are several strengths of tablet available, so your doctor will tell you which strength is right for you.
- You can generally take atorvastatin at a time of day to suit you, but it is best to take your doses at the same time of day each day. You can take the tablets either before or after food.
- If you have been given atorvastatin chewable tablets, you can chew the tablets to help you swallow, or you can swallow them whole with a drink of water.
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the following day, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.

Muscle And Joint Problems
Some Lipitor patients report various types of muscle injuries after taking the drug. Although the likelihood of muscle disease is minimal with statins alone, researchers determined the risk is substantially elevated among patients who take statins at the same time as other medications such as certain antibiotics, antifungals and treatments for HIV and hepatitis C.
Lipitor can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure, according to the drug label. You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor.
Blood Sugar Problems With Atorvastatin:
Muscle problems and memory issues are considered complications linked to statin-type cholesterol-lowering drugs. It took a lot longer time to realize that atorvastatin and other statins could also raise blood sugar. We received a signal about this complication long before the FDA acknowledged it could be a problem:
I was recently informed after a series of tests over a six-month period that my blood glucose levels were elevated. I have been taking Lipitor for about a year or so and was wondering if this drug could be associated with my rise in blood glucose levels. I dont want to take medications that improve one medical situation and make another worse.

Muscle Pain And Damage
You may experience muscle pain when taking a statin. This may include soreness, tiredness, or even weakness in your muscles. The pain may be mild, or it may become severe enough to greatly impact your daily routine. If you have any new or unusual muscle pain or fatigue after starting a statin, talk to your doctor right away. Ignoring muscle pain can make it worse. Theres also a risk that the pain can progress to serious muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis.
Stress And Mental Health
Mental health plays a significant role in sleeping ability. In addition, stress caused by life events and mental health conditions like anxiety have been closely linked to the development of insomnia.
Research shows that insomnia is more frequent in those with psychiatric conditions such as major depression disorder, bipolar disorder and cyclothymic disorder, as well as most anxiety disorders and substance abuse disorders. These conditions, especially depression, are common in older adults and seniors, meaning they are also more likely to experience symptoms of insomnia.

How Long Before Statins Leave Your System
It takes about 77 hours for atorvastatin to be out of your system. The elimination half life of atorvastatin is approximately 14 hours. This is the time it takes for your body to reduce plasma drug levels by half. It takes approximately 5.5 x elimination half lives for a medicine to be out of ones system.
Can Atorvastatin Cause Shortness Of Breath
There are no official reports of dyspnea caused by statins, but, of course, anything is possible. Without some clinical information about the dyspnea, it is difficult to do more than guess. If the patient had wheezing, then it might have been an allergic bronchospasm, similar to the reaction in my patient.
