Anything Else I Should Know

Can the Birth Control Pill Cause Adrenal Fatigue? – Dr. Jolene Brighten

In addition to potential side effects and risks, there are a few other things to consider before deciding to use birth control pills:

  • Frequency. Youll need to take the pill every day at the same time. If you miss one dose, youll need to use a backup form of birth control for the next seven days to prevent pregnancy. In addition, after a lapse in contraception, you may have spotting or light bleeding after the missed pills.
  • Intimacy. The pill doesnt interfere with any sexual activities. You wont have to pause to take it during sex.
  • Time line. The pill takes about seven days to start working. If youre sexually active during that time, youll need to use a backup form of contraception.
  • Protection. While it helps to prevent pregnancy, birth control pills dont provide any protection against sexually transmitted infections. Youll need to use an additional form of birth control, such as condoms, to avoid sexually transmitted infections.

Irritating Itchy Yeast Infections

Lower estrogen levels while on the pill can increase the frequency of yeast infections for women who have other risk factors. And women on the pill who have poorly controlled diabetes, a diet high in sugar or alcohol, or a weakened immune system may also experience more yeast infections, says Alyssa Dweck, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Mount Kisco, New York. Treatment with an over-the-counter vaginal antifungal cream or a prescription medication typically cures a yeast infection. But if the problem is chronic, says Dr. Dweck, it may help to switch birth control methods.

Can I Take Melatonin With Birth Control

Doctors do not recommend consuming melatonin pills as a long term solution. Although melatonin is naturally occurring, melatonin supplements are typically used as a short-term solution and are not meant to be taken for more than four weeks, especially if mixed with other drugs. While there are no clinical studies on the effect of melatonin on birth control and other medications, it is important to err on the side of caution and consult your doctor before taking melatonin.

How Can It Raise Heart Risk

You may hear your doctor call the pillhormonalbirth control. As the name suggests, its got hormones in it, including estrogen and progestin. There are other methods to keep yourself from getting pregnant that also have them in it, like injections, IUDs , the patch, a device implanted under the skin called Nexplanon, and the vaginal ring.

Studies show the hormones in these kinds of birth control can affect your heart in many ways. They may raise your blood pressure, for instance. So if you take birth control pills, get your blood pressure checked every 6 months to make sure it stays in a healthy range. If you already have high blood pressure, talk with your doctor to see if another way to prevent pregnancy would be better for you.

Women who take certain birth control pills may see a change in some of their blood fats that play a role in heart disease. For example your levels of HDL goodcholesterol could go down. At the same time, your triglycerides and LDLbad cholesterol may go up. This may cause a gradual buildup of a fatty substance called plaque inside your arteries. Over time, that can reduce or block the flow of blood to your heart and cause a heart attack or a type of chest pain called angina.

Estrogen in birth control pills can also raise your risk of blood clots.

Your chances of heart disease and other complications are higher if you:

Melatonin Supplements For Sleep

How the oral contraceptive pill disrupts sleep

In the U.S., melatonin is considered a dietary supplement by the Food and Drug Administration . As a result, it isnt closely regulated like prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. Some studies of melatonin supplements found that they dont always contain the correct dosage or exact ingredients listed on their packaging. In some other countries, melatonin is categorized as a drug and only available by prescription. To be on the safe side, consult with your doctor before beginning melatonin supplementation.

Although melatonin supplements help promote sleep, not all professionals recommend them for chronic insomnia, which is insomnia that lasts over a month. Instead, sleepers struggling with insomnia for over a month may benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia . Studies suggest that melatonin works well for certain other sleep issues, however, such as jet lag. Melatonin supplementation might also be useful for shift workers, but more research is required.

The Devastating Damages Of The Pill

Birth control pills literally rob the body of nutrients required for vitality:

  • BCPs deplete folate and this can cause serious health problems because lack of folate disrupts DNA metabolism
  • BCPs deplete vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, which may lead to irritability, depression, insomnia and fatigue.
  • BCPs deplete zinc and this in turn lowers the immune system and encourages insulin resistance
  • BCPs deplete magnesium, leading to a chain reaction of mineral imbalances in the body
  • BCPs permanently disrupts the balance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract. This means reduced nutrient assimilation, lowered immunity, and the overgrowth of pathogens like Candida. Since gut flora is passed on from mother to baby, the mothers imbalanced gut health is passed on to her children, and likely even her grandchildren .

Those serious deficiencies and imbalances that result from taking birth control pills translate into these more visible symptoms:

  • Weight gain

A person may find that aromatherapy, inhaling diffused essential oils, such as lavender, helps with sleep. Also, some homeopathic products might enhance sleep.

It is worth noting, however, that there is that these techniques help with sleep disorders.

Also, consult a doctor before using any essential oils during pregnancy.

Can The Pill Make You Tired The Short Answer: Yesnomaybe

Check out the small print on the prescription information that comes with your pills every month. The list of side effects for combination birth control pills is loooooong.

Youll probably see extreme tiredness, weakness, or lack of energy listed as possible side effects. On the other hand, hormonal birth control can reduce symptoms of PMS, meaning you may have more energy instead of feeling zapped. *shrug*

However unlikely it is, if your birth control is the cause for feeling tired, theres good news. Most birth control side effects subside as you continue to take the medication. If time doesnt take care of the problem, switching to a different type of pill usually helps.

Since 25 percent of women ages 15 to 44 who use contraception say they use the birth control pill, lets start there.

There are two types of birth control pill:

  • Combined pills with estrogen and progesterone
  • Progesterone-only pills

Progesterone-only birth control pills do not list fatigue or extreme tiredness as a side effect.

There are three other forms of contraception that use hormones to prevent pregnancy, and theres a chance they could cause you to feel tired.

What If You Want To Stop Hormonal Birth Control Entirely

Side Effects of Birth Control Pills

Whether you want to swap to a nonhormonal method or come off birth control entirely, you should always speak to your doctor.

The final decision is yours, but they can advise alternative methods that will work for your specific needs.

They will also tell you exactly how to stop your birth control.

Youll want to be careful about stopping the pill and the like abruptly, as this can cause a disruption in your menstrual cycle and create bleeding issues. If you have an implant or IUD, it will need to removed by a professional.

Go to your doctors appointment armed with a list of questions. The following may help:

  • Am I likely to experience any side effects?
  • How quickly can I get pregnant?
  • What other forms of contraception are available to me?

Halting birth control can relieve some side effects, but it can also cause others.

Your mood, libido, and menstrual cycle may be affected.

And if youd been prescribed contraception for a condition like acne, you may see a resurgence of symptoms once the hormones have left your body.

No two people have the same experience, and you may find positive effects instead of negative ones.

To manage this hormonal comedown, embark on a fulfilling lifestyle.

Ensure youre eating a regular diet full of nutritious foods like vegetables and less of the processed variety.

Try to keep your stress levels to a minimum, get enough sleep each night, and dont forget to exercise.

Can Hormonal Birth Control Alleviate Symptoms Of Anxiety

TLDR: Yes hormonal birth control can alleviate symptoms of anxiety. Hormones are complicated things, and the impact of hormonal birth control on each woman can vary significantly.

Some womens anxiety about getting pregnant is very strong. Birth control would decrease that type of anxiety.

However, some women experience pill anxiety the fear of running out of birth control, the stress of having to run to the pharmacy each month to get their birth control. Pandia Health takes care of this by providing FREE delivery and automatic refills and reminders.

Those with uteruses who choose the birth control pill, patch, or ring may also be anxious from having to remember to take the medication every day, every week, every month, respectively.

Estrogen increases levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which generally causes positive mood and emotional well-being.

However, too much serotonin can cause increased anxiety.

Essentially, hormonal birth control can help decrease many different forms of anxiety that women experience. when choosing which method is right for you, note that hormonal contraceptives regulate your hormone levels and, thus, your mood and emotions. While those on non-hormonal birth control have a lower chance of being prescribed anti-depressants, remember that those experiencing depression and anxiety are not only prescribed mediation. Talk to a Pandia Health doctor to find which hormone birth control is right for you to help ease your anxiety!

Probiotics For Gut Support

Is birth control bad for my gut? Can I take probiotics with birth control? If these are some of your top questions know that youre not alone. These questions are sent to me regularly from readers.

Yes, birth control is bad for your gut, as I explained. And yes, you can take probiotics while using birth control. In fact, you should take probiotics because birth control disrupts the microbiome.

In my clinical practice I recommend MegaSporeBiotic because it is a spore based organism that promotes microbial diversity in the gut. It also helps with creating healthy antioxidant status in the body. And it doesnt cause the same kind of issues a Lactobacillus species can if you have SIBO.

Balance, Prenatal Plus, and MegaSporeBiotic are all part of the post-birth control basic supplement kit that you can check out here.

Oral Contraceptives Depressive And Insomnia Symptoms In Adult Women With And Without Depression

Studies have found links between oral contraceptives , depression and insomnia.

It is unknown if women with depression are more vulnerable for these symptoms.

OC use showed associations with more severe insomnia symptoms.

Associations between OC and depression differed within- and between persons.

Associations were not moderated by previous or current depressive disorders.

What Is A Hormone Imbalance

What causes insomnia, how is it treated, and can it lead ...

Hormone imbalances occur when there is not enough or too much of a certain hormone being produced by the body. And because a hormone imbalance often presents as tiny inconveniences or mimic other conditions such as constipation or diarrhea, losing or gaining too much weight, hot flashes, sweating, exhaustion, and infertility, many people brush off the symptoms and do not seek medical treatment.

Can Birth Control Improve Mood

Researchers at the American Journal of Epidemiology found that women who used hormonal contraceptives between the ages of 25 and 34 had lower levels of concurrent depressive symptoms than those who did not use hormonal contraceptives. In addition, birth control may boost a persons mood and, thus, decrease depression severity.

Can Birth Control Pills Cause Insomnia

Theres very little research on this specific topic, but lets go over whats available.

Some studies have shown that oral contraceptives improve sleep quality when no significant side effects are present .

However, one 2016 study from Denmark looked at birth control usage in a population of over 1 million women. They found that usage was significantly linked to antidepressant prescriptions and depression diagnoses :

Users of progestin-only pills had a relative risk for first use of an antidepressant of 1.34 users of a patch 2.0 users of a vaginal ring

Note that not all birth control pills are progestin-only .

Regardless, those birth control users had a 1.34 times higher risk of using an antidepressant .

Why does this matter?

Depression is one of the biggest risk factors for insomnia.

Another study found that :

Oral contraceptive use was consistently associated with more severe concurrent insomnia symptoms

And it appears that the depressive symptom side effects are a possible explanation.

SummaryWhile insomnia is not a common direct side effect of birth control pills, depressive symptoms can be. These depressive symptoms could be putting some women at a higher risk of developing insomnia, although more research is needed to understand this link better.

But it doesnt have to be this way. In fact, in my practice, we create individualized protocols and plans for each woman who decides to come off the pill.

Alternatives To The Traditional Pill

For many people, remembering to take a birth control pill once a day isnt realistic. For others, the estrogen in traditional birth control pills can cause side effects such as insomnia and anxiety, which theyd rather avoid.

The FDA has approved a number of alternative birth control options in the past 20 years, including the vaginal ring, progestin-only birth control pill, and the patch. There are options you can use internally or externally, depending on what you like best.

Hormone Imbalance And Menstrual Cycle:

Occurrence of the irregular menstrual cycle can be attributed to extreme stress or a new physical activity. The menstrual cycle occurs at a span of every 21-35 days for about four to seven days. Due to a hormonal imbalance, the bleeding pattern and the reasons differ. A proper balance of hormones is quintessential in order to get pregnant and any alterations yield to menstrual obstacles thus preventing pregnancy as well. The menstrual cycle is dependent on an adequate amount of estrogen, FSH and LH, progesterone etc.
