Sleep problems and insomnia can come from a number of causes, both emotional and physical. For instance, those with chronic pain conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia may be kept up late due to the symptoms of their conditions, or may find themselves waking at various points in the night due to their pain. Depression can cause too little or too much sleep, while anxiety and racing thoughts can keep people of all ages up at night. Heart conditions can be worsened by sleep issues as well as potentially causing sleep issues.

While these can in theory affect anyone at any age, these conditions become more common as we age, making sleep problems in the elderly more and more common. In addition, some medication can disrupt sleep, so its best to look at the side effects of your medication or speak to your doctor about it.

Potential Causes Of Oversleeping

Several factors could explain your need to oversleep. Sleep disorders and underlying health conditions can both contribute to sleeping too much, in addition to other causes.

Sleep Disorder

Common sleep disorders that lead to oversleeping include hypersomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. People with hypersomnia experience extreme sleepiness during the day, no matter how long they sleep at night or how frequently they nap.

People with sleep apnea experience temporary lapses in their breathing during sleep. These lapses result in loud snoring, choking, or gasping sounds that can wake them up and disrupt their sleep. Even if the person stays asleep, their sleep quality is reduced, leading to daytime tiredness and a desire to sleep more.

People with narcolepsy can experience sudden episodes of sleepiness during the day, suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, and feel a need to oversleep as a result.

Underlying Health Condition

An underlying health condition, physical or mental, can also contribute to oversleeping. For example, hypothyroidism can lead to higher levels of exhaustion, fatigue, and a need to oversleep. People with hypothyroidism are nearly twice as likely to oversleep.

Sleep problems are also one of the main symptoms of depression. Some people suffer from insomnia and sleeping too little, while others suffer from hypersomnia and oversleeping. As with oversleeping in general, women who have depression are more likely to oversleep than men.

With the above said, however, oversleeping or not sleeping enough, is one of the many symptoms of depression. Depression can either cause you to oversleep or to not sleep enough.

Depression makes you sleep too much because of the toll depression and the other symptoms of it take on your body.

A depressed person is generally weighed down with the weight of all the issues that are bogging them down. This leads to other symptoms like being irritable and having serious mood swings, having a loss of appetite, and just being generally disinterested in life.

When all these symptoms are compounded, you have a person who is mentally and emotionally exhausted without realizing it. That mental and emotional exhaustion then takes its toll on the body leading to physical exhaustion. And when the body itself gets exhausted to that extent, its response is to sleep and in most cases, oversleep.

Depressed people suffer from extreme loneliness, low self-esteem and confidence, grave insecurities/inferiority complex, and a minimal sense of focus. These factors may drive them to isolation, resulting in deterioration of their social life and relationships. A lot of negative feelings are involved in depression, and other people may not be empathetic, patient or sensitive enough to understand to give space and support to a depressed person. They may feel that their efforts cant break through the walls of a depressed friend or family member, or the afflicted doesnt help himself/herself to overcome their own sadness, guilt, or frustration.

Tips For Getting A Healthy Amount Of Sleep

If youre worried that youre sleeping too much, talk to your doctor. They can help you figure out whats causing you to oversleep and provide recommendations for getting a healthier amount of sleep.

In the meantime, you can work on improving your sleep hygiene. Start by following a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends. This includes going to bed around the same time every day, and waking up when your alarm sounds the first time. Avoid napping during the day, especially for periods longer than 30 minutes.

You may also want to reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake, and incorporate more healthy foods into your diet. Exercise in the morning can help you wake up. A regular exercise routine also promotes better sleep.

At night, make your bedroom as dark, cool, and quiet as you can. Then, in the morning, use light strategically to wake yourself up. You may find it beneficial to use a dawn simulator as an alarm clock and open window curtains to let in the sunlight.

A good nights sleep is beneficial for your health, but a long nights sleep isnt necessarily better. Consider what may be contributing to your need to oversleep, and consult your doctor for their advice.

Why Do People Sleep Too Much

For people who suffer from hypersomnia, oversleeping is actually a medical disorder. The condition causes people to suffer from extreme sleepiness throughout the day, which is not usually relieved by napping. It also causes them to sleep for unusually long periods of time at night. Many people with hypersomnia experience symptoms of anxiety, low energy, and memory problems as a result of their almost constant need for sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder that causes people to stop breathing momentarily during sleep, can also lead to an increased need for sleep. That’s because it disrupts the normal sleep cycle.

Of course, not everyone who oversleeps has a sleep disorder. Other possible causes of oversleeping include the use of certain substances, such as alcohol and some prescription medications. Other medical conditions, including depression, can cause people to oversleep. And then there are people who simply want to sleep a lot.

What Other Techniques Can Help Me Sleep

In addition to trying medications, here are some tips to improve sleep:

  • Learn relaxation or mindfulness-based meditation and deep-breathing techniques.
  • Clear your head of concerns by writing a list of activities that need to be completed the next day and tell yourself you will think about it tomorrow.
  • Get regular exercise, no later than a few hours before bedtime.
  • Don’t use caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine in the evening.
  • Don’t lie in bed tossing and turning. Get out of bed and do something in another room when you can’t sleep. Go back to bed when you are feeling drowsy.
  • Use the bed only for sleeping and sexual activity. Don’t lie in bed to watch TV or read. This way, your bed becomes a cue for sleeping, not for lying awake.

    Have A Strong Sleep Schedule

    Having a regular predictable sleep schedule makes it much easier for your body to wake up and go to sleep each night.

    Your natural sleep cycle works with your bodys natural processes to help you wake up in the morning. But if you wake up at different times each morning, your internal body clock has no way of calibrating itself to know when its the right time to wake up. If you dont even know what time youre going to wake up in the morning, your body clock has no chance!

    If youve got a problem with oversleeping, it can be hard to imagine waking up full of energy in the morning. But once youve got a good sleep schedule, thats just what naturally happens.

    Some people find it easier than others to stick to a regular sleep schedule. Just like some people are more prone to insomnia than others. But the concepts of sticking to a good sleep schedule are the same for everyone so its a skill you can master with a bit of practice.
