A 2018 study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine assessed the use of home Sleep Apnea testing devices for assessing Sleep Apnea. These devices included smartphones, smartwatches, and other wearables. The rapid development and application of a sleep apnea tracker is largely due to the increasing prevalence of Sleep Apnea.

The reference standard for the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea remains cardiorespiratory polysomnography , which is a multi-parametric sleep study of heart and lung functions. However, the testing capabilities of HSAT devices have been getting more accurate and specific to Sleep Apnea. The SCOPER scheme has been developed to evaluate and categorize HSAT systems by validating the most important functions for diagnosing Sleep Apnea.

This acronym indicates these functions as follows:

  • Sleep
  • Respiratory effort
  • Airflow

The SCOPER process checks the functions needed to characterize Sleep Apnea rather than simply merely counting individual apnea events. For example, it evaluates an HSATs ability to distinguish between central and obstructive apnea, which is vital for developing an effective treatment plan. This evaluation scheme thus allows new sensors and software to meet the criteria for a successful diagnosis of Sleep Apnea. HSAT systems also need to evaluate the severity of the Sleep Apnea when reporting measurements.

Sleep Score is available through any Fitbit with a heart rate monitor, which includes the Charge 4, Versa 2, Versa, Versa Lite and Ionic.

So far, Fitbit has a major advantage over Apple. Though Apple bought the Finnish sleep science company Beddit last year, it has yet to include a sleep-monitoring app into its smartwatch.

Another move that gives Fitbit some leverage over its competitors? Getting its products into insurance plans offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield . As part of this partnership, Blue Cross Blue Shield members will be able to purchase a Fitbit device at a significant discount which ranges from 15% to 49% off Fitbit products including Charge 2.

When we tried out the Sleep Score beta, it also featured something called the Restoration index. Itâs here where Fitbit indicated it will look for signs of asthma, allergies and even sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea, where breathing stops and starts during sleep, causes blood oxygen levels to fluctuate.

Fitbit is still yet to receive FDA clearance, and so it canât actually say any tracked patterns are indicative of asthma, sleep apnea or other conditions. What it does instead â at least for now â is just report on big fluctuations.

In the app, under the âLearn Moreâ section of the Estimated Oxygen Variation graph, this is clarified further.

âYour Fitbit canât measure the bloodâs exact oxygen saturation level, but it can detect major changes. Seeing big changes is a clue that you may be experiencing breathing disturbances during sleep,â Fitbit says.

So, when could we see the current estimate transform into a more accurate metric that can feed into Fitbit Sleep Score?

Were continuing our clinical trials to collect the data to support that final application, said Heneghan back in August, discussing the companyâs work with the FDA. Were still at the early stages of testing.

You can bet that when the company does receive clearance â something thatâs potentially being held up by the â Sleep Score will improve even further.

Fitbit Premium Sleep Features

The premium Fitbit service comes with many perks, sleep features included. It gives you a more detailed score breakdown, an explanation of why it matters, as well as tips on how to improve your sleep. However, the two most important metrics Fitbit Premium gives you access to are Sleeping heart rate and Restlessness.

They can give you valuable insight into what is giving you sleep troubles. Your sleeping heart rate, for example, should typically be lower than your resting heart rate during the day. If it climbs during your REM sleep stages, it might mean you were having nightmares even if you dont remember them the next day.   • In the Fitbit app, tap the Today tab , then tap the sleep tile .
  • From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the sleep tile.
  • Tap Today or another day to see details.
  • Swipe up from the clock face to see Fitbit Today.

    The new Fitbit models offer the possibility to track blood d oxygen variation occurring during the night. A high variation in oxygen saturation can be a sign that you experienced sleep apnea episodes.

    There is no need to rush to the doctor if you experience only moderate variations. Still, in case your blood oxygen varies consistently every night, it may be a sign of sleep apnea and will justify talking about it with your doctor.

    Every night, sleepers will go through four to six sleep stages divided into the previously described cycles: light, deep, and REM.

    Theres a big caveat with the Nest Hubs Sleep Sensing feature, though: its only free through 2022. In 2023, youll need to sign up for a subscription to access the Nest Hubs sleep tracking features.

    If a fitness tracker is too uncomfortable for you, a ring might be a better choice. The Oura Ring 2 is a small, comfortable tracker and offers a multitude of sensors without looking any different from a regular piece of jewelry.

    It has an infrared heart rate monitor, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and not one but three temperature sensors.     Can’t See The New Option

    Owners of other Fitbits may be disappointed to learn that their watch isn’t getting the new tool, but the reason is a simple hardware one: only the Sense and Versa 3 have the necessary microphone.

    These are both premium smartwatches, with price tags to match, but as voice controls become more mainstream we’ll hopefully start to see cheaper Fitbits equipped with microphones that will support snore detection.

    If you own one of the compatible watches and can’t see the snore detection option yet, don’t worry it appears to be rolling out gradually, and you should get it soon.

    Fitbit Is Working On Devices That Can Diagnose And Track Sleep Apnea

    For the past year, Fitbit has been making a concerted push to improve sleep monitoring on its fitness trackers. It debuted sleep stages with its Alta HR and has expanded the feature, along with sleep insights, to other devices like the Fitbit Blaze and Charge 2. But it has much bigger plans for all things sleep related.

    Fitbit is now working on devices that can track and diagnose sleep apnea, Conor Heneghan, Fitbit’s lead research scientist, revealed in an interview with CNBC. Sleep apnea, which affects 18 million Americans, is a sleep disorder that causes shallow breaths and pauses in breathing while sleeping. It can lead to an increased risk in heart failure, obesity and even cause a stroke.

    Fitbit’s method to diagnose sleep apnea would use heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Specifically, Heneghan indicates the new Fitbit devices could use optical technologies to shine light onto the skin to track blood color. Blood that is highly oxygenated is red, while less oxygenated blood is blue. The sensor would be able to detect when blood oxygen levels lower while someone is sleeping.

    “We’re leveraging the fact that Fitbit has experience in optical electronics, making them small and power efficient,” Heneghan says. He expects the sleep apnea features to come to market within a year, though it’s unclear which devices it could come to. It’s possible it could be a part of Fitbit’s smartwatch.
