    A sleep tracker is a device that monitors one or more aspects that reflect your sleep patterns, habits, stages, quality, and/or duration. This measurement is indirect, relying on more easily detectable physical signals of sleep, rather than basing it on brain activity and eye movement as they do in some formal medical tests.

    Most sleep trackers look at heart rate and respiration rate, which are closely linked to sleep stages. Additionally, tracking respiration can help show potential breathing issues, like snoring and sleep apnea. Many trackers also use a small built-in movement-detecting device called an accelerometer to assess how much you move while sleeping, thereby analyzing sleep time and quality.

    Some sleep trackers may use a microphone to pick up snoring, movement noise, and ambient noise to judge how well youre sleeping. Others contain a thermometer to provide data on how room temperature may affect your sleep.

    Wearable and non-wearable sleep trackers are available. While theyre usually similar in what sort of data they collect, they may use different methods to do so. Since a wearable device touches the body, it can monitor heart rate, respiration, and movement more directly. Many non-wearable devices rest on or under the mattress and monitor vibrations to gather data. As long as theyre well-calibrated, either device should capture valuable information.

    What Should I Know About Fitbit Sleep Stages

    If you use a Fitbit device with heart-rate tracking to track your sleep, you can see a record of the sleep stages you cycle through at night. This article answers frequently asked questions about sleep stages.

    While youre asleep each night, your body typically goes through several sleep cycles that last on average 90 minutes. In each cycle you alternate between two types of sleep:

    Light Sleep and Deep SleepWith less brain activity than REM sleep, non-rapid eye movement includes the stages of light sleep and deep sleep. Periods of deep sleep are typically longer early in the night.

    Rapid Eye Movement SleepThe stage associated with vivid dreams, REM sleep periods are typically longer as the night goes on .

    During a sleep cycle, its most common to go from light sleep to deep sleep, back to light sleep, and then into REM sleep. Then the cycle generally repeats, but sleep patterns vary naturally.

    Sleep stages are traditionally measured in a lab using an electroencephalogram to detect brain activity along with other systems to monitor eye and muscle activity. While this method is the gold standard for measuring sleep stages , your device can estimate your sleep stages in a more comfortable, convenient way.

    Fitbits sleep researchers and the National Sleep Foundation describe the following sleep stages. The names of the stages are what weve chosen to use in your Fitbit sleep log.

    Setup: Workouts Music And More

    To slim down the Versa and remove the ugly aluminum frame that prevented the Ionic from fitting properly on people with small or even normal-size wrists, Fitbit sacrificed built-in GPS. Instead, the watch connects to your smartphone’s GPS. That means you’ll have to take your phone running or biking to get accurate data on mileage, splits and pace. Fitbit says that if you run or bike the same route regularly, the device’s algorithms will be able to accurately log your workouts even without your phone nearby.

    In general, that’s true, but the lack of onboard GPS is still a letdown. Like the Ionic, the Versa can store up to 300 songs, which makes it seem like the kind of device I can use without a phone. Without GPS, it doesn’t feel like that.

    Storing songs on the watch itself is easy, if you have a Deezer or Pandora premium account. Both services are $9.99 a month. I signed up for the free three-month trial that Deezer is offering Versa users and stored multiple lengthy running-focused playlists on the Versa.

    I set out for a 3-mile run with my phone in tow for GPS, which wasn’t ideal, but I did find switching between the music and workout screens seamless.

    You don’t need to have the Deezer app installed on your phone just sign in to your account in the Fitbit app under your device’s Media settings, and tap to add music. It took about 30 minutes to sync 80+ tracks over Wi-Fi, so you’ll want to start this process well before you plan to hit the pavement.

    The Fitbit Versa Lite is a smartwatch that tracks exercise, steps, calorie burn, sleep, female cycles, heart rate, and more. It lets you get notifications from your connected smartphone for calls, texts, and app alerts. It’s water-resistant to 50 meters so you can wear it in the pool, ocean, or shower. You can deck it out with apps and watch faces for a more personalized experience. Since it’s intended to be work around the clock, you don’t need to charge it daily. The battery can last over four days.

    Different Types Of Sleep

    For tracking, Fitbit worked with sleep researchers and the National Sleep Foundation to highlight four specific types of sleep, which you see in a readout in the morning when you wake up.

    Heres a breakdown, along with Fitbits explanation, of what each stage means:

    Awake: When it comes to being awake during the night, many of us think that waking up at all is bad news. Turns out, waking up during the night is a normal part of sleep. In fact, waking up anywhere in the ballpark of 10-30 times in a single evening is normal.

    So, if youre one of those people who roll over a few times during the night or get up to pee once or twice, youre just like everyone else. Theres nothing to be super worried about.

    Light Sleep: Light sleep occurs when your body starts to slow down at night, its that moment when you start to fall asleep, but you could be easily woken. The best example is probably those moments when youre commuting and fall asleep on the train or in the passenger seat of your co-worker’s car. When youre in light sleep, you may be aware of what is going on around you, and someone can wake you up easily but youre still asleep.

    During this sleep stage, your heart rate decreases slightly from what it is when youre awake. Just because you can be woken easily doesnt mean this isnt a useful stage light sleep helps a ton with mental and physical recovery, so you can feel better after an hour of light sleep than you did before you started to snooze.

    What To Consider When Purchasing A Sleep Tracker

    Well break down some of the top things to look for when purchasing a sleep tracker. While all of these factors matter to a certain extent, some may not be high priorities for you. Assessing what you want in a tracker can help you hone in on the most important aspects.

    Sleep Tracking: Sleep trackers capture an array of data that may include heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration, snoring, time awake, time sleeping, sleep interruptions, and body temperature. Some may also monitor room temperature, humidity, noise level, and light. Since trackers vary in what sleep-related factors they detect, shoppers should pay attention to the specific product details to find an option that collects the information that interests them most.

    Sleep Analytics: Sleep analytics use the data from sleep tracking to delve more deeply into sleep quality and patterns. They may provide detailed charts to show you how your sleep has changed over time, overlay multiple sets of data to show you how different factors are linked, and provide you with a daily sleep score. Wearable trackers can also link your daily activity levels to the quality and duration of your sleep.

    Other Features: Sleep trackers often come with additional features, like fitness tracking, GPS, coaching, and integrations with other apps. These components may make your device more versatile, insightful, or convenient, but they can also increase the price-point.

    A Workaround If Only Part Of Your Sleep Has Been Recorded

    There is a workaround if you find your nightly sleep data is incomplete. It is a manual solution that is not ideal but may be better than doing nothing.

    You can edit the sleep log in the smartphone app by tapping the 3 dots in the upper right corner of each sleep session. This gives you the option to edit or delete the line.

    So lets say you have two separate sleep sessions for the night. You could delete the first one and edit the start of the second one to coincide with when you actually went to bed. Its a good way of merging two or more half-night segments.

    The sleep stage info will be a bit messed up but the length of the sleep session will be correct. You might even find that sleep stage info has been deleted entirely for that night.

    How To Check Your Fitbit Sleep Statistics

    Sleep Tracking on Fitbit Sense, Versa 3, 2 & lite

    After you wake in the morning, you can review the information Fitbit has recorded about your sleep.

    Start the Fitbit app on your phone and wait for it to sync. You can see your overall sleep time on the Today page. This is the time Fitbit believes you were asleep the previous evening, not including any time you were restless or woke up during the night.

    Tap the sleep entry to go to the detailed Sleep page. At the top of the page, you’ll see a graph that shows how you slept for the last week.

    Swipe the graph to see three tabs: how long you slept each night, your sleep schedule , and a summary of your sleep stages.

    Below the graph is a list of your individual daily sleep cycles. It displays much more detail about your sleep stages throughout the night.

    To see this in more detail, tap the day you want to view. On the detailed page, you can also compare your actual sleep to a “benchmark” of how the average person of your age and sex sleeps.

    Wear Your Fitbit On Your Wrist

    Some Fitbit models, like the Inspire 2 and the original Inspire, allow you to wear your Fitbit in a clip.

    Unfortunately, when you wear your Fitbit in a clip and set your Inspire to on-clip mode, the heart rate sensors automatically turn off.

    That means that your Fitbit in the clip-position can only record sleep in the three general categories of awake, restless, and asleep since it doesnt record any heart rate data.

    So for folks who wear their Fitbits in a clip or pendant when sleeping, try wearing it on your wrist and see if that makes a difference.

    When you wear your Fitbit on your wrist and set it to wrist mode, it automatically detects when you are sleeping and records your sleep stages using your heart rate information.

    Thats why you must check that your Fitbit is set to on-wrist and not on-clip mode in the Fitbit Settings app.

    What Does Awake Minutes Mean

    When youre viewing your sleep stage data, youll most likely see awake minutes information. The average adult wakes up several times throughout the night. Even though you may not remember waking up, if your Fitbit shows awake minutes then you definitely did.

    If you wake up briefly and then fall right back asleep your brain will likely not remember it at all and will assume that you were sleeping throughout the night. If you frequently wake up feeling like you arent refreshed, thats probably an indicator that you woke up frequently throughout the night and youll see a higher amount of awake minutes in your app.

    Software: Mostly Unchangedfor Now

    Fitbit didn’t change much in its Fitbit OS software platform, which launched on the Ionic. But if you’re upgrading from an Alta or Charge fitness band, the Versa offers a brand-new experience.

    There are a variety of apps and clock faces to choose from, some designed by Fitbit and some from high-profile third parties. You can store a United Airlines boarding pass on the Versa, browse New York Times headlines, control your Philips Hue lighting and scan your Starbucks card to pay for coffee. All of those apps are also available on the Ionic.

    With 550 apps and clock faces, Fitbit doesn’t have the most robust app store the Apple Watch has thousands of apps to choose from. But Fitbit is encouraging developers to build useful apps for its devices, and I expect to see more in the future.

    A new Today view, accessible by swiping up from the watch face, displays an overview of your stats for the day, including steps walked, heart rate and workout metrics. Right now, the Today view offers generic tips on nutrition, heart health and sleep, but later this year, Fitbit will start using your data to offer personalized insights in that section.

    Adjusting Sleep Sensitivity On Fitbit

    Fitbit records your sleep activity in either Sensitive or Normal mode. If you notice that your device isnt properly responding to movements like tossing around or blinking during bedtime, you need to make your Fitbit more sensitive to movements.

    To change the Sleep Sensitivity of the tracker, do the following:

    • Go to the Account tab from your Fitbit app Dashboard.
    • Scroll down and tap on the Advanced Settings.
    • Go to Sleep Sensitivity.

    Dont Tell The Fitbit App You Are Going To Bed

    All wrist-based Fitbits automatically sense when you are sleeping when wearing your Fitbit to bed. So there is no need to tell the Fitbit app you are going to bed or starting sleep.

    To get a detailed reading of the sleep stages, do not select Begin Sleep Now inside the Fitbit app when you go to bed.

    Also, dont tap on Im Awake when you get up.

    For whatever reason, when you tap these notices in the Fitbit app, your Fitbit does not reliably track your sleep stages. Why? We dont know!

    However, taping these app features does still track your sleep in terms of time awake, restless, and asleep.

    We recommend that you allow your Fitbit to automatically track your sleepthat seems to be the best way to get all your sleep data, including sleep stages.

    Plus, you dont have to do anythingso its one less thing to do before sleep.

    Fitbit Premium Sleep Features

    The premium Fitbit service comes with many perks, sleep features included. It gives you a more detailed score breakdown, an explanation of why it matters, as well as tips on how to improve your sleep. However, the two most important metrics Fitbit Premium gives you access to are Sleeping heart rate and Restlessness.

    They can give you valuable insight into what is giving you sleep troubles. Your sleeping heart rate, for example, should typically be lower than your resting heart rate during the day. If it climbs during your REM sleep stages, it might mean you were having nightmares even if you dont remember them the next day. On the other hand, restlessness gives you an idea of how much you toss and turn in your sleep. The less you toss and turn, the better your quality of sleep and the more rested you feel on the next day.

    Together, these two metrics make up the Restoration score another Fitbit Premium-exclusive feature. It gives you a better idea of how peaceful your sleep was.

    How To See Sleep Tracking Data

  • In the morning, open the app. Go to the Today view, selecting from the bottom, left of the main dashboard.
  • Pull down on the page to refresh and sync the app with your tracker. Do this until you see a sleep duration show up under the section that shows the image of the moon and a letter Z. It might take a few tries to sync successfully.
  • Tap on the icon with the moon image and letter Z .
  • At the top, you’ll see a graph showing your Sleep Score for the last seven days, a score that calculates how much time you slept versus was awake, how much deep and REM sleep you got, and your heart rate and restlessness through the night.
  • Swipe left on that graph to see how many hours you slept every night for the last seven days.
  • Swipe left again to see how your actual sleep schedule measures up based on your target sleep schedule.
  • Select Today on the bottom half of the screen, which will show the time you fell asleep and woke up, total hours of sleep, Score, and assessment, from Excellent to Poor.
  • Scroll down to see how many minutes or hours you spent Awake, REM, Light, and Deep sleep a bar chart shows this as well. You can also see the exact times spend in each sleep state.

  • Scroll further down to see your estimated oxygen variation to detect if there were any high variations, which can signal breathing issues.
  • Scroll back up to the Summary and select the 30 Day Avg tab to see the average percentage of time you spend in each sleep state nightly over the last month.
