Wearing Earplugs Against Snoring Can Be Dangerous

If you are unhappy with your partners snoring, you might wish for a way to block out the sounds. Some might try taping the snorers mouth shut. This isnt the best idea. Earplugs also might seem like a great solution: theyre inexpensive and they can be effective against all but the loudest snoring.

However, earplugs to block out snoring may not be the ideal choice. Thats because they come with serious risk potential. And the more often and the longer you wear them, the greater the risks.

    Is Sleeping With Earplugs Harmful

HEAROS Nanos NRR 28 Noise Cancelling Foam Ear Plugs ...

Wearing your earplugs for snoring overnight is potentially risky. One of the more common risks is the buildup of earwax in the outer ear. Our body naturally produces earwax to perform functions similar to nasal mucus, including trapping bacteria. When the earwax cant flow naturally out of the ear, it can build up and become impacted. Impacted earwax can be painful, may cause infection, and may need to be removed by a doctor.

Wearing earplugs to block out snoring and in general can also increase your risk of ear infections. They trap earwax and bacteria in your ear while creating an environment that favors bacterial growth. Poorly fitting earplugs can also scratch your ear, which gives bacteria an entrance to infect your ear.

Earplugs can also be uncomfortable for long-term wear and may irritate your jaw joint as well as your ear.

If you are going to wear earplugs all night, custom earplugs are recommended.

Double Glazed Windows For Noisy Neighborhoods

Even after youve unplugged every last gadget and gizmo in your home, you might still be putting up with noisy neighbors or a nearby street with high traffic. Those sounds could be leaking in through your windows and keeping you up all through the night.

You might consider double glazing your windows, a technique that uses two panes of glass to increase insulation. This technique is especially good at blocking out higher frequency noises like loud music and human voices. As an added benefit, double-glazed windows are safer because theyre harder to break.

Many homeowners also find the increased insulation makes a sizable dent in their energy bills by maximizing the efficiency of their air conditioning and heating units. If your neighbors are particularly loud, there are triple glazing options available as well.

What To Do If You Dont Hear Your Alarm Clock With Earplugs

Best Earplugs For Sleeping – Will One Work For You?

If you still cant hear your alarm clock, you should consider looking for alternatives. One thing you can do is to keep your alarm close to your head. I keep my alarm clock always on the other side of the room to make sure I have to stand up to stop the alarm sound. If you also have your alarm clock somewhere else, consider putting it near your head.

And if you still cant hear your alarm clock with earplugs I have 3 ideas for you.

  • Wear a watch that has a vibration-based alarm. A watch like this can wake you up by vibration instead of sound. Therefore, you can wake up even if you wear earplugs. Mostly such watches have a lot more features than just the vibration-based alarm. So, you have a nice little tool that you can also use every day for tracking calories and steps and looks cool.
  • Use a white noise machine or white noise app instead of earplugs. If you dont know much about them, I wrote a guide for you how they work and if you should choose a white noise machine or a white noise app. You can take a look at it here: White Noise Machine vs. AppBoth of them produce so-called white noise sounds which suppress noise that prevents you from sleeping. Because theres no need using earplugs then, you wont need to be afraid of oversleeping anymore. Also, white noise machines are very durable and are even cheaper than earplugs in the long run. See it as an investment.
  • Now Im at a point, where I can say Ive accomplished my goal.

Help Them Lead A Healthier Lifestyle

Being overweight can be a major factor in what causes snoring.

Even a few extra kilograms on the scales can mean more tissue developing in the neck, which can contribute greatly to the problem.

Plenty of exercise and a healthy, balanced diet is key.

It is a common misconception that alcohol helps you sleep, in fact drinking alcohol tends to relax the muscles and make the condition worse.

It is important not to indulge too close to bedtime if you dont want to stop drinking completely.

Smoking is another big factor as it can increase bronchial inflammation and cause the airways to swell.

This, in turn, makes it harder to breathe so if at all possible then stopping completely should help the situation.

5 Pair Soft Sponge Ear Plugs Soundproof Earplugs ...

    Yes, yes and yes!

We speak to a lot of people who say that they have tried earplugs to block noise in the past but they found that they didnt work.

Hmmm, this is an easy one, if earplugs do not work effectively to block sound, 99 percent of the time, this is because they are the wrong size and or they have not been inserted correctly, particularly when it comes to soft foam earplugs.

If you try to push an earplug into your ear and hope for the best expect the worst. They, quite simply, are not going to block the amount of sound that they are intended to.

    We thought youd never ask.

We have helped hundreds of people save their marriage with these little beauties, with the Clipair Nasal Device and Airmax Nasal Breathing Device. The Airmax Nasal Device, patented by Ear Nose & Throat specialists, is a specially designed medical device that increases airflow through the nose to help you breathe better.

Made of a super soft medical grade silicone, the Airmax acts a stint to keep the nasal passage open which is the ideal solution for people who snore at night.

If snoring starts in your nose, keeping your nasal passages open can help. Imagine a thin garden hose with water running through. The narrower the hose, the faster the water rushes through.

Your nasal passages work similarly to this. If your nose narrowed or clogged, fast-moving air that you breathe in is more likely to produce snoring.

What Are The Best Earplugs For Snoring

When you are choosing a pair of earplugs to block out snoring you must take particular notice of the NRR.

The NRR is the amount of sound measured in decibels that a pair of earplugs will block out.

To better understand this, a persons hearing threshold is defined as 0db . A watch ticking would have a level around 20db, whilst whispering rates at approximately 30db, the average conversation is around 50 60db. A vacuum cleaner is typically 70db.

Snoring usually falls between 60 90 decibels, thats pretty damn loud in anyones ears

Now you can wonder no more why you toss and turn, attempting to get a decent nights sleep, whilst your trying to drift off into a peaceful slumber lying next to a vacuum cleaner!

Mack’s Slim Fit Foam Ear Plugs

The Mack’s Slim Fit Foam Ear Plugs look like any regular old foam earplugs, but I could feel the difference in quality as soon as I put them in my ears. They quickly formed an airtight seal and muffled sound instantly. While I could still hear some noise , the loud snoring going on next to me went from a roaring thunderstorm to a minor distraction that was easy to tune out. These particular earplugs have a noise reduction rating of 29 dB. For reference, most earplugs on the market have a rating of 0 to 30 dB and the higher the number, the more effective they are.

And they’re specifically made for small ear canals. I’ve used other foam earplugs in the past and always have issues with them falling out in the middle of the night. It wasn’t until I had a conversation with Pete Brenner, whose family started selling Mack’s earplugs in 1962, that I realized it’s because I wasn’t using the right size earplugs for me. It makes a huge difference in effectiveness, so keep that in mind. The foam is also soft and pliable, so it molded right to my ear canal for the perfect, comfortable fit.

If you don’t have small ears, you can still take advantage of Mack’s advanced snore-blocking technology with its Snore Blockers or Original Soft Foam Earplugs. If you go with any of these options, make sure you thoroughly read the directions before putting them in your ears. One of the most common reasons these types of earplugs get a bad review is because they’re not inserted properly.

    What Is Pink Noise

    Fitting Foam Earplugs

Similar to white noise, pink noise is a type of sound that contains all frequencies. However, what distinguishes it and makes it easier on the ears is that higher frequency sounds are less intense. A study of pink noise on sleep showed “significant enhancement” of “stable sleep time”.

Common pink noise sounds come from nature, including the sound of waves crashing on a beach, rustling leaves, and rainfall.

    Hearos Saved My Marriage

Think about it. Sleep. Its a primal need. If we dont get enough of it, we cannot be at our best or look our best. As yet due to all of the never ending stressors of a womans day, nothing can be more frustrating than being tired and being ready for a restful night of rest only to be kept awake, frustrated, annoyed and irritated by the constant and unpredictable snore of another. To make matters worse, have you ever noticed that the one snoring has NO DIFFICULTY snoring away while you toss, turn, stare at the ceiling and try to cover your ears just so you can try and get some rest before the alarm goes off.

In 2005, after receiving thousands of emails from women that said things like HEAROS saved my marriage and Now I can finally sleep with my husband again after 15 years of battling his snoring, HEAROS created a new, pioneering brand of ear plugs just for her. That brand was appropriately called Sleep Pretty in Pink. For more than a decade and having sold tens of millions of pairs of silky soft pink ear plugs, Sleep Pretty in Pink has claimed the mantle of being the most successfully marketed and promoted brand of ear plugs having been featured on national tv, radio, print and dozens of websites devoted to helping women fall and stay asleep. As a testament to the brands success, Sleep Pretty in Pink, the United States Patent & Trademark Office awarded HEAROS the registered trademark for the color pink in ear plugs.

Are There Any Application Tips To Help Me Get A Proper Seal With The Earplugs

First try re-inserting the earplugs after carefully re-reading the directions. Be sure to insert the plug while pulling up and back on the outer ear to straighten the ear canal. If you are still unsuccessful with a plug that has now warmed to body temperature, try another “cooler” plug. A plug that is cooler in temperature will retain its compressed shape and rigidity slightly longer, sometimes making it easier to insert. A sign that the earplug is sealing properly is that your own voice will sound more internal and exaggerated.

Check With The Doctor Or Participate In A Sleep Study

If snoring is a huge problem, one of the best ways to handle it is to talk to a doctor or participate in a sleep study. There are a ton of things that cause snoring and you might be surprised about the solution.

One TFG reader shared, Check with a doctor. My hubs was assessed by an ENT , it changed our lives! Only wish wed done it years ago. None of the typically suggested remedies worked for a reason and we needed to know that reason. Exam revealed the problem and Day Surgery was required. Poof! Quality of life vastly improved for us both! No more snoring!

A sleep study can help you address the actual problem, instead of using a bandaid solution as one TFG reader put it. There can be some pretty serious negative consequences when it comes to snoring so its important to take into consideration.

One TFG reader shared her positive results, After decades of snoring, my husband was given a CPAP machine. It gives us quiet nights. Life-changing.

Why Is It So Difficult To Block Out Snoring Noise

    Alpine SleepSoft

The main problem is that snoring can get really loud.

In 2009, Jenny Chapman, a retired UK bank employee, took part in a snoring boot camp to find a remedy for her loud snoring.

Snoring at a record 111 decibels, she was by far the loudest of all participants. She snored as loud as a jet plane. As you can imagine, many news outlets reported on the record-snoring grandma.

Very few people make that much noise at night.

But even a moderately loud snorers Chrrrrrr comes in at 50 dB, with peaks reaching up to 77 dB.
