Sleep Problems That Affect Blood Pressure

GABA For Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, High Blood Pressure, Mood, and More

Several types of sleep issues can cause hypertension or make it harder to control. The most common sleep problems that affect blood pressure include:

  • Insomnia: the inability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and get restorative sleep may contribute to hypertension
  • Obstructive sleep apnea : intermittent episodes of halted breathing during sleep correlate highly with hypertension
  • Restless leg syndrome : some relationship between RLS and high blood pressure may exist, though the data conflict
  • Sleep deprivation: getting fewer than six hours of sleep per night correlates with an increased risk of developing high blood pressure

The link between clinical , RLS, and hypertension remains unproven. But if you have been diagnosed with hypertension and OSA, or if you have and experience sleep deprivation, you can take steps to address these underlying issues to perhaps help you control your blood pressure better.

How Dangerous Is High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is classified as Stage One or Stage Two. Stage One hypertension is a reading of 130/80 mm Hg or above, while Stage Two has readings of 140/90 mm Hg or above. Anything exceeding 180/120mm is considered a medical emergency.

If youve been diagnosed with hypertension, or youve just experienced a sudden spike in blood pressure, youre far from alone. In fact, according to the CDC, 45 percent of adults in the United States experience high blood pressure, and only a quarter of those have their blood pressure properly being treated.

But just how dangerous is high blood pressure?

Blood pressure can have a dramatic impact on your health, especially if you have chronic hypertensionbut even sudden spikes in high blood pressure can contribute to the following.

Take Your Medication At A Different Time

Sometimes timing can make all the difference. If theres flexibility in when you take your medications, taking them at a different time can make all the difference in your sleep quality. This is especially true for medications that contain stimulants you dont want to be taking something thats supposed to keep you awake close to bedtime.

However, if you need to take your prescription on a set schedule, talk to your doctor before you do anything.

Improve Sleep Quality To Reduce The Risk Of Hypertension

  • Breathing exercises: Before bed, close your eyes and take a deep breath from the abdomen area, not the chest. Breathe slowly and deeply so your lungs begin to fill up. As you slow down your breathing, you will feel your body becoming relaxed.
  • Wear socks: Because feet have poor blood circulation, when they get cold in the middle of the night, it can cause a person to wake up and disrupt their sleep.
  • Put together a bedtime routine: Its essential to create a bedtime routine that helps you unwind. Whether its taking a warm bath, drinking non-caffeinated tea, dimming the lights in your bedroom or listening to relaxing music, its important to relieve the days tension.
  • Try not to oversleep: Never sleep late because youre trying to make up for a poor nights sleep. Try to get up around the same time each day. Waking up at different times even for a couple of days will reset your body clock to a different cycle, where youll be sleepy later and wake up later as well.
  • Go to sleep at the same time: Maintaining a scheduled bedtime will help lower your stress levels as well as manage your bodys internal clock andcircadian rhythms.
  • Have a comfortable room temperature: If youre too cold or too warm, you may become uncomfortable and find it difficult to sleep.
  • Exercise: Staying active and exercising on a daily basis will result in higher levels of melatonin, which will help induce deep sleep.

What Can I Do To Get Better Sleep

Links Between Food And Sleep

Several recent studies have found a link between eating habits and sleep. We know that obese people do not sleep as well as those who are at a healthy weight. In addition, eating shortly before bed appears to make it harder to fall asleep.

Our food choices also appear to affect our quantity and quality of sleep. In a study of Japanese women, those who chose fish and vegetables for their evening meal slept better than those who chose other foods.

Drinking sweet beverages before bed also seems to make it more difficult to get the rest you need. In addition, skipping meals and eating at irregular times can negatively affect your circadian rhythm. However, none of these studies have suggested that cutting back sharply on an entire food group could change your sleep quality.

Insomnia Causes High Blood Pressure

Speaking of his findings at Sleep 2008, the annual meeting of the associated professional sleep societies, lead researcher Alexandros Vgontzas recounted his methods and results. Interviewing more than 1,700 people, Vgontzas grouped them according to sleep duration and efficiency and discovered that those that slept fewer than five hours per night were five times more likely to suffer from hypertension. Sleeping five to six hours raised the likelihood of hypertension three times, concluding that there is a definite link between insomnia and hypertension.

    How To Sleep When Stressed

Blood Pressure, Insomnia, Memory Loss, and Chick Pea Benefits , Suzy Cohen, America’s Pharmacist TM

Stress management is key to a good nights sleep, and how well you manage stress can depend on your day-to-day lifestyle. In addition to following a balanced diet and exercising throughout the week, you can alleviate stress through controlled breathing and other relaxation techniques. A healthy work-life balance is also important, as is your ability to productively release stress during situations that cause stress, and not at other moments.

Proper sleep hygiene can also improve your sleep quality and duration, leaving you more refreshed in the morning and prepared to manage stress. Sleep hygiene guidelines include:

Laying in bed when you are too stressed to sleep can be counterproductive. If you havent gone to sleep within 15 minutes of going to bed, try getting up and relocating to another area of your residence for a relaxing activity such as reading, meditating, or listening to calming music avoid watching TV or other activities that involve blue light devices.

Some people also experience anxiety when they wake up in the middle of the night and see the time on their bedside clock. Avoid looking at your clock if you wake up cover the display if necessary.

If your sleep problems persist, you should see your doctor or another credentialed physician. This may lead to an insomnia diagnosis and treatment for your insomnia symptoms.

    Nasal Decongestants Or Oral Decongestants

Decongestants can come in handy when youre suffering from a stuffy nose. They can be taken as a nasal spray, like , or as an oral decongestant, like . But one downside is that decongestants can cause insomnia.

If youre using a decongestant, its probably just for a short period of time, so you may decide to push through the nighttime annoyance until you dont need it anymore. You could also consider an alternative, drug-free option like a saline nasal spray or an antihistamine nasal spray like .

Sleep Deprivation Plus Stress Hurts Blood Pressure

Study: Blood Pressure Rises 10 More Points When Sleep Deprivation Is Added to Stress

Researchers recruited 20 healthy young adults and measured their blood pressure at rest and then after a stressful task, in this case, giving an impromptu speech where they had to defend themselves for a supposed transgression â either running a stop sign or taking someoneâs wallet.

A week later, after staying up all night, study participants returned to the lab to take the tests again.

Systolic blood pressures, the top number on a blood pressure reading, climbed about 10 points higher when fatigued people were delivering their speeches compared to when they were doing the same task well rested.

âLack of sleep in combination with stress caused a much higher increase in blood pressure,â says study researcher Peter L. Franzen, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburghâs Sleep Medicine Institute.

It suggests that not getting enough sleep may be involved in the development of cardiovascular disease, he says.

While 10 extra points may not sound like a huge difference, experts who study blood pressure say itâs important.

âThatâs clinically relevant,â says David Pollock, PhD, regents professor of medicine at the Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta.

Previous studies have shown that not getting enough sleep can raise blood pressure, as can stress. But few have looked at what happens when sleepy people are under pressure.

    Natural Cures For Insomnia

Study links insomnia genes to heart disease, stroke risk

In most cases, natural remedies are the best solution for sleep disorders. Although eating fewer carbs in the evening appears to support sleep, there are also other lifestyle changes that can make a difference.

Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine in the evening can make it easier to fall asleep. In addition, getting more exercise and sun exposure during the day appears to help people feel sleepy when night falls.

Last, the behaviors you engage in before bedtime can affect your sleep quality. Avoiding television, smartphones and other screens in the hour before bed can help you to fall asleep more quickly. Keep your bedroom and bed for sleep and sex only, even if this means waiting to go to bed until you are truly sleepy.

Although insomnia can be a challenge, lifestyle changes appear to be the best approach. This includes making sleep-friendly diet choices in the hours before bed. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, consider skipping dessert and reaching for a piece of fruit instead.

What Is The Relationship Between Wellbutrin And Insomnia

Wellbutrin was originally developed for people, who have some form of depression. It is now also used for other off-label purposes, such as ADHD, eating disorders, and even smoking cessation. This antidepressant activates your brains neurotransmitters , so they can more effectively send messages to various parts of your body. Active neurotransmitters can lead to racing thoughts, increased physical activity, chronic insomnia and poor sleep quality, especially when this medication is taken shortly before bed.

It is important to note that insomnia is a common side-effect of depression and that Wellbutrin may worsen your inability to fall and stay asleep all night. It may also lead to tossing-and-turning and frequent wake-ups throughout the night. So, it is important that you contact your doctor if the insomnia lasts more than a few days, frequently reoccurs, or is worsening. Depending on the severity of your insomnia, your doctor may lower your dose, prescribe a sleep aid to take at night, or change your medication altogether.

Fortunately, many people, who take Wellbutrin, experience an improvement in sleep once their bodies become acclimate to the medication. And, in the case of depression, typically once the depression improves, the insomnia also improves. Thus, determining if the sleeplessness is stemming from Wellbutrin or depression can be challenging. As a result, many doctors treat the insomnia as it occurs.

What Happens If I Don’t Sleep

Everyone’s experienced the fatigue, short temper and lack of focus that often follow a poor night’s sleep.

An occasional night without sleep makes you feel tired and irritable the next day, but it won’t harm your health.

After several sleepless nights, the mental effects become more serious. Your brain will fog, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. You’ll start to feel down, and may fall asleep during the day. Your risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road also increases.

    Temporary Spikes Are Not Dangerous

Those with chronic anxiety may be more prone to high blood pressure spikes, but the body does do a good job of adjusting and blood pressure often gets back to its normal rate for most of the day. You can’t necessarily feel high blood pressure, and while any stress on the body can cause anxiety, it’s more likely that your anxiety causes the spikes than the other way around.

It’s never a bad idea to speak with a doctor about your blood pressure concerns either. Only a doctor can tell you if there is something you should worry about. Also, remember that the more you worry about your blood pressure, the more anxiety you’ll experience, and the more likely you’ll suffer from these blood pressure spikes.

    Sleep And Nocturnal Bp

Constantly Checking High Blood Pressure Caused By Anxiety?

During normal sleep, there is a decrease in BP relative to wakefulness. This decrease is referred to as nocturnal dipping and partly is attributable to decreases in sympathetic output. Although arbitrary, a decrease of 10% to 20% in mean nocturnal BP compared with mean daytime BP is considered normal. Conversely, an absence of nocturnal dipping, or nondipping, is designated as a < 10% decrease in nocturnal BP.

Lack or diminished nocturnal dipping of BP is a strong, independent predictor of cardiovascular risk. The Ohasama study noted that on average, each 5% deficiency in the normal decline in nocturnal BP was associated with an approximately 20% greater risk in cardiovascular mortality. Other studies have confirmed this finding.- Many diseases are associated with diminished or absence of nocturnal dipping, including most secondary causes of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, older age, resistant hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea .

Taken together, these results demonstrate that even small changes in BP, especially nocturnal BP, can alter cardiovascular risk significantly. Accordingly, disease processes related to sleep that may affect BP have the potential to alter cardiovascular morbidity and mortality substantially.

Research has found that sleep deprivation contributes to atherosclerosis. Plaque forms as a consequence of inflammation, which involves white blood cells, which are produced by the immune system, to collect in the arteries. Poor sleep triggers chronic inflammation, which contributes to plaque formation and hardening of the arteries.

The impact of sleep deprivation on coronary heart disease is also believed to be influenced by sleeps effects on blood pressure. Hypertension strains the arteries, making them less effective at bringing blood to the heart and as a result contributing to heart disease.

How Does Sleep Apnea Cause High Blood Pressure

    Related Reading

Each time a person with OSA experiences airway collapse and briefly stops breathing during sleep, their sympathetic nervous system becomes activated and blood pressure rapidly spikes when they resume breathing. Sometimes, this sequence of pausing and resuming breathing can cause a person to wake from sleep. When a person wakes up after an OSA event, activation of the sympathetic nervous system and blood pressure levels escalate to an even greater degree.

Additionally, when sleep is disrupted by OSA symptoms, the body releases sympathetic nervous system hormones called catecholamines into the blood. Catecholamines are stress hormones that are majorly released by the adrenal glands. Examples of catecholamines include dopamine and epinephrine . High levels of catecholamines in the blood cause high blood pressure.
