    Is getting 7 hours of sleep each night with the Apple Watch a modest goal or motivational game? Either way, it works.

    One week with Apple Watch sleep tracking has made me a believer — but not in the benefits of seven hours of sleep each night. Instead, over my first few days in bed with the watchOS 7 public beta software on my wrist, I realized it’s actually possible to train yourself into adhering to a sleep schedule. 

    Ridiculous, right? 

    As I’m sure you, reader, can relate, spending most of my time at home the past months has sabotaged my sleep schedule in ways I never thought possible. And, because I test fitness trackers, I’m acutely aware of how much sleep I’ve lost.

    But Apple Watch sleep tracking has brought me the tangible reprieve I’ve needed: a routine. When Apple first announced the long-requested feature would join the company’s catalog of Health tools, I’ll admit I was skeptical about how it and the Apple Watch would fare against even the best Fitbit in providing actionable sleep data. 

    After testing it out with watchOS 7 on my Apple Watch Series 5, though, I’m convinced it’s the perfect sleep tracking system for people like me, who just want to know if they’ve had enough rest, and want some simple tools to get enough zzzs.

    What Else Do I Need To Know About Sleep Tracking With My Apple Watch

    As with any form of Apple Watch tracking, sleep tracking works best if you’re wearing your Apple Watch on the correct wrist and comfortably. If the watch is too loose, the accelerometer might register too much movement from you, even when you’re asleep. Wear it too tightly, and you’re probably going to feel somewhat uncomfortable trying to sleep.

    As well as that, you may need to change when you recharge your Apple Watch. You need your watch battery to be at around 30% or more for it to track your sleep all night successfully. Otherwise, the Watch will tell you to charge it up beforehand. 

    For those with the Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 6, this will be less of an issue, but older models will definitely need a solid top-up at some point before you head to bed. We recommend hitting your Stand goal for the day then sticking your Watch on charge for an hour or so before bed, such as when you’re unwinding reading a book or watching TV. That way, it should last the duration. 

    Finally, consider buying a watch strap that will be more comfortable to wear in bed. It’s not essential but if you need plenty of comfort while you sleep, it could help.

    Sleep tracking has been one the most oft-requested features for Apple Watch, but Apple itself has yet to implement a solution. That hasn’t stopped developers from creating their own watchOS apps for doing it, though.

    AutoSleep allows you track your sleep with your Apple Watch in two different ways. The first, and most detailed/accurate, way is to wear your Apple Watch while you sleep. If you do this, all you have to do is download and plugin some basic information about yourself.

    Now though, there is a Sleep app on the watch and it uses motion to detect your sleep time.     Should you choose to make the jump into the Apple Watch world, there are additional SleepWatch features that become available. First and foremost, when you wear your Apple Watch to sleep, SleepWatch will automatically track your results without requiring that you manually input your sleep times. You’ll also be able to glean some additional insight into how you sleep through the Sleep Pattern graph and by auto-tracking your estimated Total Restful Sleep Time, Average Sleeping Heart Rate, Average Sleep HRV, and Sleeping Heart Rate Dip.

You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep. 

    The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether you’re in a good state of health. Heart rate during sleep can vary from 40-100bpm, and can be influenced by a range of things like exercise or drinking.

    How Can You Make Sure Your Apple Watch Is Tracking Sleep

    Apple’s Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

    To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . From there you can enable tracking sleep with the Apple Watch that will forward that data to the iOS Apple Health app. It’s here where you can also enable charging reminders and automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode at night – though if you want to switch it on manually, look for the new ‘Bedtime’ button on your control center.
