Is Cpap Giving You Panic Attacks
Some people find the mask uncomfortable and may have panic attacks when first starting CPAP therapy.
Some things to try:
- Practice wearing your mask for brief periods while watching TV
- Do breathing exercises to help your body realize it can still breathe through the mask
- Turn on your CPAP & practice feeling how your body reacts to the air pressure
- Make sure youre relaxed before bedtime
- Wear the mask for a couple hours then a little longer each night
- Ask your doctor about the ramp mode
- Try a different mask
But Then Something Weird Happened
Wendy was about to leave when she by-the-way mentioned that her husband often complained about her snoring.
Thrilled to be able to provide some help, I gave her a copy of my extremely effective Stop Snoring Exercises Program.
It includes simple exercises that loosen up and strengthen the muscles around the breathing passages.
I didnt even think about it. But these are, of course, the same exact muscles that connect to the balance system in the ears and eyes.
For the next couple of weeks, I researched vertigo and dizziness heavily.
Unfortunately, there was no reliable solution available.

Sleep Apnea May Stop Your Heart
People with sleep apnea have a slightly higher risk for sudden cardiac arrest an often fatal condition when the heart shuts off according to a study from the Mayo Clinic published today.
Sudden cardiac deaths account for nearly half a million deaths per year, but their underlying risk factors remain unresolved.
A growing body of evidence suggests that sleep apnea, where a personâs breathing pauses or becomes shallow while asleep, increases a personâs chances for developing heart disease.
This same group of Mayo researchers found people with sleep apnea had 2.6-fold higher risk of SCA while sleeping during the night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In the general population, these hours are typically connected with the lowest number of sudden cardiac deaths.
âThe prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in Western populations is high and will likely only continue to grow given the obesity epidemic and direct relationship between obesity and sleep apnea,â said lead author Dr. Apoor Gami, M.D., MSc, FACC, a cardiologist at Midwest Heart Specialists â Advocate Medical Group in Elmhust, Ill.
This study recruited 10,000 Minnesota residents with suspected sleep disorders and identified 78 percent with moderate sleep apnea. Patients were tracked for up to 15 years, although the average follow-up occurred five years after an initial overnight sleep exam.
Assistive breathing devices or surgery to remodel air passages can remedy sleep apnea.

What Causes Pain After Sleep Apnea
Daytime pain after a night of sleep apnea symptoms is very common.
Chronic pain can lead to poor sleep and poor sleep can actually intensify chronic pain. Some of these reasons are straightforward. We all know the experience of an awkward position in sleep causing a few aches and pains the next day, and the fatigue that comes with often makes it feel worse.
But there is research that sleep apnea and pain are more deeply intertwined than that.
Concomitant Obstructive Sleep Apnoea In Patients With Menieres Disease: A Case Report And Literature Review

Menieres disease is a condition characterised by fluctuating and progressive hearing loss, aural fullness, tinnitus, and intermittent attacks of vertigo. Although the aetiology of MD is largely unknown, the pathology is the result of hydropic distension of the endolymphatic system . Various factors such as stress are known to trigger or contribute to MD .
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a sleep-related breathing disorder where episodes of apnoea/hypopnea occur during sleep due to a collapse of the upper airway. The direct consequences of the collapse are intermittent hypoxia and hypercapnia, recurrent arousals, and increase in respiratory efforts, leading to secondary sympathetic activation, oxidative stress, and systemic inflammation . The cardiovascular complications of OSA are well documented , but the neurotological consequences have only been studied recently . A mainstay of treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure , which corrects the hypoxia and associated body stresses.
We report a case to illustrate the relationship between MD and OSA and highlight some of the challenges encountered. The relevant literature will be reviewed and discussed from the perspective of the otologist/neurotologist.

Can Sleep Apnea Cause Dizziness
About 26% of American adults between the ages of 30 and 70 have sleep apnea, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Typical warning signs include snoring, gasping, and extended pauses in breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea can also cause numerous daytime symptoms, including dizziness. If youâre experiencing dizzy spells or vertigo, particularly in the morning, thereâs a chance that sleep apnea is to blame.
Sleep Apnea Symptoms And Warning Signs
Sleep apnea, or the cessation of breathing for short periods during sleep, can cause symptoms at night as well as troublesome symptoms during the day or waking hours. At night, sleep apnea is often associated with
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by a reduction or pause of breathing during sleep. It is common among adults, becoming more common in children. Although a diagnosis of sleep apnea often will be suspected on the basis of a person’s medical history, there are several tests that can be used to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment of sleep apnea can be either surgical or nonsurgical.
An apnea is a period of time during which breathing stops or is markedly reduced. In simplified terms, an apnea occurs when a person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more. If a person stops breathing completely or take less than 10% of a normal breath for a period that lasts 10 seconds or more, this is an apnea. This definition includes complete stoppage of airflow. Other definitions of apnea that may be used include at least a 4% drop in oxygen in the blood, a direct result of the reduction in the transfer of oxygen into the blood when breathing stops.
Another index that is used to measure sleep apnea is the respiratory disturbance index . The respiratory disturbance index is similar to the apnea-hypopnea index; however, it also includes respiratory events that do not technically meet the definitions of apneas or hypopneas, but do disrupt sleep.

Can Sleep Problems Cause Benign Positional Vertigo
A few days after my 3rd son Brennan was born, I suffered from classic benign positional vertigo. Looking back on the course of events, I had a eureka moment last night that literally kept me up in bed.
Benign Positional Vertigo is a well-described inner ear condition that otolaryngologists like myself treat all the time. The classic description is when you feel dizzy, like the room is spinning, just after a sudden head movement, either up or down, or side to side. The spinning will usually last a few seconds, and you may have residual nausea and imbalance for hours to days. Its typically preceded by an infection, head trauma, stress, or in many cases, no significant events at all .
The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is performed to make the diagnosis and the Modified Epley is then continued on to cure the problem if the Dix-Hallpike is positive. In my experience, the Epley maneuver works about 80-90% of the time to cure the problem instantly if the Dix-Hallpike is strongly positive. Its one of the more gratifying maneuvers/procedures that I perform.
Any infection, whether a common cold or sinusitis, causes swelling in the nose and throat which narrows the upper airway, which narrows the throat even further, leading to more obstructions, causing more reflux, leading to more throat inflammation and narrowing.
Am I completely out of line, or am I on to something? Please give me your opinion in the box below.

Sleep Apnea Headaches Typically:
- Are felt on both sides of the head
- Dissipate patient wakes up and breathes normally .
- Regularly reoccur
- Are only felt on one side of the head
- May last for hours or days
- Can be accompanied by visual impairments
- Include nausea and vomiting
- Include light sensitivity
The different types of headaches that can be caused by sleep apnea include:
- Cluster headaches – Headaches that occur in clusters or patterns during cluter periods that may last for weeks or months.
- Hypnic headaches – Moderate throbbing headaches that wake the sufferer up one or more times during the night.
- OSA headaches -Headaches caused by the widening of blood vessels.
Sleep apnea and headaches go hand in hand, especially in older patients who often wake up a few hours after sleeping with a headache. Generally headaches due to sleep apnea occur between 4 AM – 9 AM, but they can also occur at night before bed.
Unfortunately, once you begin to experience sleep apnea headaches you can get caught in a cycle with pain on a daily basis. This is because chronically losing sleep creates a debt in your system that leads to stress and inflammatory changes, especially when hypoxemia, an abnormally low concentration of oxygen in the blood occurs.
Those with chronic headaches may be encouraged to keep a journal for three months to track triggers and patterns for attacks. However, you may also be advised to be tested for sleep apnea with a simple, at-home test.

Isnt Sleep Apnea Just A Fancy Name For Snoring
Not at all. Snoring is that annoying sound that occurs when air passes relaxed tissues in your throat as you sleep. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a persons breathing repeatedly starts and stops during sleep.;Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but many who have sleep apnea do snore regularly and loudly. One in five adults suffers from at least mild sleep apnea; it afflicts more men than women.;The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea , in which weight on the upper chest and neck contributes to blocking the flow of air. A less-common type, central sleep apnea , occurs when the brain fails to send regular signals to the diaphragm to contract and expand. CSA has been associated with brain stem stroke.

Chest Pain And Untreated Sleep Apnea
Untreated OSA is a risk factor for problems with the heart that can cause chest pain: coronary artery disease, chronic heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
Thus, it wouldnt be surprising if someone with bouts of nighttime chest pain is found to have both OSA and one of the three cardiac conditions mentioned above.
Though obesity is a major risk factor for OSA, its not the only risk factor. This is why thin people, including women, can have this often misdiagnosed condition.
For example, a naturally small airway, excess pharyngeal tissue and/or large tongue base can cause an obstruction during sleep, when these tissues are very relaxed, leading to apnea.
The episodes of ceased breathing overnight cause internal disruptions such as reduced blood oxygen and increased heart rate and blood pressure, but these would not cause chest pain.

What Does Not Cause Vertigo And Dizziness
There are many myths about vertigo and dizziness and other balance problems, and I need to tell you about the more serious ones
Myth Number 1:Vertigo and dizziness is just a normal part of aging.
You shouldnt accept vertigo just because youre getting older.
It sets on people as they age because of an underlying factor that commonly affects older people.
Ill tell you more about this in a second.
However, if you tackle this underlying vertigo and dizziness factor, your vertigo will be gone in minutes never to return no matter what age group you belong to.
Myth Number 2:Vertigo is a direct cause of another disease.
Ménières, vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis are commonly blamed.
Yes, these diseases are associated with vertigo. But they arent the real underlying cause.
In fact, doctors have no idea what causes these diseases. They say Ménières causes vertigo and then state that vertigo is the main symptom of Ménières.
Like a dog chasing its tail, this just leaves you dizzier than ever and without a real solution.
Myth Number 3:Medications and surgery cure vertigo and dizziness.
If they dont know what causes vertigo, how are they going to cure it?
Now, Ill always encourage everyone to listen to their doctors and follow their advice.
But if yours is not open to alternative methods, get a second opinion.
In fact, the side effects are usually horrible. Theyll make your problems worse in the long haul.

The Connection Between Sleep Apnea Dizziness And Vertigo
Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when the airway becomes blocked during sleep. It can partially or completely stop the airflow, causing an individual to have disrupted, uncomfortable sleep. Even though it is a serious issue, many people do not realize they are living with it. If you have undiagnosed sleep apnea, you may feel fatigued upon waking or experience daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea is known by many for the toll it can take on the human body, especially if left untreated. Sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure, heart problems, and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. However, the effects of sleep apnea on the brain can be just as alarming, with some reporting serious side effects such as dizziness and vertigo.
Dizziness and vertigo often go hand-in-hand and sometimes can even be used synonymously, but they are different. At one point, dizziness was a catch-all term for similar conditions including vertigo. Dizziness is an altered sense of spatial orientation and a distortion of where you are within a space, causing your balance to just feel off. Vertigo, on the other hand, is truly the sensation of self-movement or the movement of your surroundingsits literally a spinning sensation.;
