Treatment Of Nightmare Disorder
Often underdetected and untreated, nightmare disorder can persist for decades. However, several medications and other nonmedication treatments are available for nightmare disorder. For nightmares associated with posttraumatic stress disorder, prazosin 13;mg at bedtime has been shown to be beneficial and is considered the first-line treatment. Prazosin has a long history of being used for the treatment of PTSD and PTSD-associated nightmares. It is a centrally acting alpha 1-adrenergic receptor antagonist. Raskind first observed its utility for PTSD-related nightmares and it was then extensively used until unexpectedly large multicenter trials failed to show any effect of prazosin compared to placebo . Since then, a position paper by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has highlighted a contradictory study and downgraded its recommendation for prazosin, but still considers it to be the first-line pharmacological choice . This is supported by a recent meta-analysis confirming that prazosin does have a statistically significant benefit on PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbances.
Nonmedication treatment of nightmare disorder should also target maladaptive beliefs, which include ruminating and catastrophizing of nightmares and their consequences. Psychodynamic approaches focus on the particular meaning of a nightmare, but other treatment approaches do not take meaning into account .

Splash Your Face With Cold Water
This method works really for me. When I know that Im overly tired or stressed out, I splash my face with cold water before going to bed.
I dry my face lightly with a towel. I leave a few droplets of water running down my face. You will have to get used to this method for it to work.
When sleep paralysis is happening, you always have to have some type of muscle movement in order to come out of sleep paralysis. When the droplets are running down my face, my face muscles are still active. This prevents me from falling into a paralyzed muscle situation.
Im usually able to drift off to a night of natural sleep.

According to Dr. Roth of Cleveland Health Clinic, Sleep Paralysis occurs when your brain moves through the stages of sleep but experiences a misstep when it transitions from one stage to the other, particularly between REM sleep and wakefulness.;
REM sleep is particularly relevant to this condition because this is the stage where we dream and when our brains are most active. Brain activity during this stage is often significantly lively compared to previous stages and will appear almost as though youre awake.
In this mentally active stage, to protect ourselves from acting out whatever is occurring in our dreams, our bodies incite paralysis using glycine. Sleep paralysis happens when theres a transitional disruption between REM sleep and consciousness, making it so youre at least semi-conscious, but the protective paralysis prevents movement or has yet to subside.
Common Sensations of Sleep Paralysis
Occasionally individuals experience heavy chest pressure and difficulty breathing. These symptoms could be attributed to the way the body shifts into shallow, rhythmic breaths during REM sleep, which is unlike how you breathe when youre awake. As your brain suddenly becomes aware of your experience, you might try to control your breath and find that you cannot, leading to feelings of panic, chest pressure, or the inability to inhale deeply.

Triggers like stress, anxiety, jet lag, and sleep deprivation can cause episodes to increase in frequency. Irregular sleep patterns or poor sleep quality can also cause sleep paralysis to occur.

Thoughts On Sleep Paralysis: Causes Symptoms And Treatments
Id never experienced SP until I was in my late 20s. Sometimes Im just aware I cant move so I concentrate on moving a toe or finger until I can move out of it. Other times I cant catch my breath and it sends me in panic mode-Sometimes Im awake enough to know Im in a dream but cant wake myself out of it. It not always terrifying but more times than not it is. Even though I can rationally tell myself its just SP. The inability to wake up or move comes with a sense of dread. I wish I could find the trigger. I experienced SP this morning. I knew I was dreaming but my dream kept playing out. It felt like a very long time to come out of it, even though Im sure it was only a few minutes.
Ive had several of these annually for the past 15 years. Im in a very stressful job with PTSD diagnosis. Sleep position is irrelevant in my situation. No harm or doom during my paralysis. I simply know my eyes are open, i can feel my heart rate increasing as Im trying to awaken, I see and hear things around me, and eventually Ive figured out that Im able to move very abruptly which wakes me up. Im on no medications and very healthy other than my recent ptsd diagnosis..
My sleep paralysis seem to happen for a hour or so.
I was also freaked for a while, folks tried comforting me then I learned about S.P. Its rather comforting now. Maybe Im starved for human touch that the pressure feels like a hug
What Is The Outcome
Sleep paralysis does not cause any long-term problems. Many people only experience sleep paralysis once or twice in their lifetime.
