A Deeper Look At Insomnia
Most of us grew up with the notion that 8 hours of sleep, daily, is needed to enable us to perform at our best. Insomnia is a condition that affects all of us at one point or another and if we are lucky, we can make up for the sleep deprivations through following sleep occurrences.
Forced sleep deprivations are common for individuals struggling to keep up with current society expectations and is clearly distinct from insomnia where the hyperarousal disorder keeps the brain overly active and prevents it from cycling through the normal channels of sleep.
Normal channels of sleep involve the cycling through 5 phases; stage 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM with each phase having particular benefits in making sure the mind and body are well rested and rejuvenated or to help you learn and form memories.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Not only does the quantity of your sleep matter, but also the quality is important as well. How well rested you are and how well you function the next day depend on your total sleep time and how much of the various stages of sleep you get each night.
How Could Confounding Affect The Study Results
With this new study of tramadol, confounding is a real concern. For example, for a person who has both kidney disease and arthritis, doctors may prescribe tramadol rather than naproxen because the latter may worsen kidney disease. Yet kidney disease could increase the risk of other health problems, including a higher rate of death, which could then be attributed to the tramadol. In other words, the very reason your doctor chose tramadol could make this medication appear riskier than it really is.
The authors of the study acknowledge this possibility and took measures to limit it. In fact, many studies try to avoid these sorts of errors, but they are impossible to avoid completely.
Swelling Under The Skin
Tramadol use can cause a condition known as angioedema, or swelling under the skin. Though rare, angioedema can happen to anyone who experiences a severe allergic reaction to tramadol. One study found that tramadol can even cause massive swelling of the tongue and protrusion of the tongue through the mouth, along with swollen vocal cords.
What Is Tramadol Cut With
Nothing harmful so long as its prescribed by a doctor.
Although most tramadol is made by pharmaceutical companies to a high standard, tramadol bought from a dealer of from the internet can sometimes be cut with other substances or be counterfeit .
If youre not sure where the tablets have come from, theres no way of knowing whats inside them. Even testing kits may not find everything.
What Are The Side Effects Of Tramadol
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction or a severe skin reaction .
Tramadol can slow or stop your breathing, and death may occur. A person caring for you should give naloxone and/or seek emergency medical attention if you have slow breathing with long pauses, blue colored lips, or if you are hard to wake up.
- noisy breathing, sighing, shallow breathing, breathing that stops during sleep;
- a slow heart rate or weak pulse;
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- seizure ; or
- low cortisol levels–nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, worsening tiredness or weakness.
Seek medical attention right away if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as: agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Serious breathing problems may be more likely in older adults and people who are debilitated or have wasting syndrome or chronic breathing disorders.
Common side effects may include:
- constipation, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain;
- dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness;
- headache; or
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
What Are Benzodiazepines And How Do They Work
Benzodiazepines are man-made medications that cause mild to severe depressionof the nerves within the brain and sedation .
Seizures, anxiety, and other diseases that require benzodiazepine treatment may be caused by excessive activity of nerves in the brain. These drugs may work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that nerves in the brain use to send messages to one another. Gamma-aminobutyric acid reduces the activity of nerves in the brain and increasing the effect of GABA with a benzodiazepine, reduces brain activity.
Insomnia Treatments Currently Under Research
These methods are not widely used for withdrawal or addictions treatment, however, research has shown that they may hold great possibility in treating both.
Amitriptyline: A tricyclic antidepressant used most commonly to treat depression. If stopped suddenly, withdrawal symptoms may occur. Though it is not FDA approved for insomnia, it has been used to do so in certain applications. As is important with any medication, do not take it unless advised to do so by a doctor following a thorough medical evaluation.
One study, published in journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica reported on a randomized double-blind trial that sought to compare the effects of amitriptyline verses lorazepam in treating opiate-withdrawal insomnia. In this study, 27 individuals contending with opiate withdrawal were given one or the other treatments. NIH reported on the findings, citing the results: the scores of two sleep measures showed that all aspects of sleep, except for ease of awakening from sleep, in the two treatment groups were not significantly different. Researchers concluded that apart from the hangover effect, amitriptyline is as effective as lorazepam in the treatment of opiate-withdrawal insomnia.
Effects And Consequences Of Insomnia
Insomnia can have a grave impact on your physical and mental heath.
Inadequate sleep affects the persons ability to concentrate and form memories. It affects their ability to manage stress and can result in a number of mood disturbances including depression, anxiety, aggression, and suicidal tendencies. There are also increased physical health risks for diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and decreased immune system functioning.
According to the Institute of Medicine , The most visible consequences are errors in judgment contributing to disastrous events such as the space shuttle Challenger . Less visible consequences of sleep conditions are far more prevalent, and they take a toll on nearly every key indicator of public health: mortality, morbidity, performance, accidents and injuries, functioning and quality of life, family well-being, and health care utilization.
The Importance Of Sleep During Withdrawals And Recovery
Consistent and good quality sleep is crucial to your health and recovery. Sleep provides your body a venue by which to heal and revitalize itself; it helps to combat the physical, mental, and even emotional damage that an addiction imposes upon your body. The benefits of sleep during withdrawal are:
- Restores and strengthens your immune system, helping to protect and prevent against damage to the body, including that of the addiction
- Aids in heart health
- Helps to regulate cortisol levels; chronic lack of sleep can increase this steroid stress-hormone. High levels put your body at greater risk for disease and increased anxiety, both of which may already be increased by the addiction
- Helps maintain and elevate your mood
- Increases stamina and energywithdrawal can be physically exhausting, so you need both to contend with its symptoms
Sleep deprivation can be very harmful to your health. According to Harvards Division of Sleep Medicine there is a correlation between poor sleep and cardiovascular disease and stroke and risk of increased blood pressure, impaired control of blood glucose, and increased inflammation. Why does this matter for someone that was addicted to opiates? Certain opioids if used excessively, including Heroin, can in the worst instances cause strokes and myocardial infarction. Some studies exhibit a correlation between opiate use and a negative impact on insulin and glucose levels.
Is Tramadol A Risky Pain Medication
All medications come with a dose of risk. From minor side effects to life-threatening allergic reactions, every decision to take a medication should be made only after the expected benefits are weighed against the known risks. You arent on your own in this: your doctor, your pharmacist, and a trove of information are available for your review. Recently, I wrote about how newly approved drugs often accumulate new warnings about their safety, including due to an increased risk of death. Now, according to a new study, the common prescription pain medication tramadol may earn a similar warning.

How To Help An Addict Quit
Its difficult to watch a friend or a loved one with a substance use disorder try to carry on as if nothing is wrong. Despite the negative consequences of abusing a drug such as tramadol, many abusers do not recognize their situation. However, approaching the person in a hostile or confrontational way can make the problem worse.
What to Do
Express concern for the person and point out facts instead of making accusations. For instance:
The goal is for the person to consider treatment based on documented situations that you present to illustrate different reasons that his or her substance use disorder is harmful.
It can also be extremely helpful to enlist the aid of an interventionist, professional therapist or an experienced member of a 12-step group who can help approach a loved one with a problem.
What Not to Do
While an addicts behavior may bother you, approaching a user in an angry fashion is often counterproductive. To avoid a reactive response, do not:
- Threaten the person.
- Judge the individuals behavior.
- Attempt to confront the user with his or her problem.
- Use the words addiction or substance abuse when you approach the person.
Risky Tramadol Side Effects
In addition to reducing feelings of pain, opioids slow down respiration and breathing to help you relax. But taking too-high doses of opioids like tramadol can slow down breathing to the point you stop breathing completely and suffer an overdose. Taking tramadol as directed is crucial to preventing an overdose and other adverse symptoms that can occur when misusing or abusing this drug.
Here are 10 risky side effects of tramadol. If you or a loved one is suffering from tramadol dependence, dont hesitate to seek help right away, since continued tramadol use can lead to serious health problems, including death.
Increase In Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition in which someones breathing will stop and start again while the person is sleeping. The use of opiates can contribute to this condition as noted by the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. There are generally three types of sleep apnea:
Central Sleep Apnea: This is when the muscles controlling breathing dont get the correct signals from the brain.Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is caused when a persons throat muscles become extremely relaxed.Complex Sleep Apnea: This is a combination of both central and obstructive sleep apnea.
How Long Does Opiate Withdrawal Insomnia Last
Most people experience opiate withdrawal insomnia from the very first day of their detoxification process and they fully recognize the impact that the withdrawal stress is having on their minds and bodies. While they are struggling to resist the cravings to use more opiates, neurotransmitters in the brain are struggling to counter-adapt to the accumulated neurobiological changes that have occurred.
Getting back to normal takes time and most often, the person is dealing with a frayed or damaged nervous system that increases their susceptibility to feel pain, stress, and negative emotions as they face the consequences of their opiate use and deal with the efforts of recovery.
Until they can identify problematic areas and make appropriates changes, are able to cope with their problems in a healthy and productive manner, and can improve their physical, psychological, and social functioning, the opiate withdrawal insomnia is likely to persist for weeks or months.

What Is Tramadol For Dogs
Tramadol is an opioid used to treat pain in canines. It is reserved for moderate to severe cases of chronic pain and is the same drug used for similar reasons in humans. Regardless, prescriptions are never transferrable from pet to pet or from pet to human, as each case is different. It is only safe to use for your dog under the prescribed direction from your veterinarian. This type of painkiller alters the perception of your dogs pain by increasing the level of serotonin in the brain. It helps promote the euphoric feelings often associated with opioid use.
Common side effects of Tramadol for dogs include: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, and tremors. If you notice a severe change in eating or behavioral habits in your pet after taking Tramadol for pain, consult your veterinarian immediately. Your dog may require an alternative remedy to treat the pain.
When starting any new medication for your dog, the veterinarian will explain all possible side effects to you. These are symptoms to watch out for, especially if your dog is new to taking medication. He may have unpredictable, adverse reactions to Tramadol, which would require immediate medical attention. Make sure to administer the medicine at the prescribed time and through the required dosage amount.
Tips For Better Sleep
There are also some strategies you can take on your own to promote better sleep. Here are a few you can try, starting today:
- Establish a bedtime routine: Turn off bright screens and any sources of blue light , keep your room dim or dark, and engage in a calming activity like a bath, shower, or meditation.
- Avoid physical activity several hours before bedtime: Getting your heart rate up throughout the day is a great way to stay healthy and promote more sound sleep. But if you exercise too close to bedtime, your body may not have enough time to settle, which can cause trouble falling asleep.
- Avoid caffeine late in the day: Save your coffee and tea breaks for the morning and early afternoon. Caffeine too late in the evening can disrupt your sleep. If you enjoy warm tea to relax before bed, try a caffeine-free option like chamomile or lavender.
How To Take Tramadol
Use Tramadol exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Follow the directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides. Never use tramadol in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if you feel an increased urge to take more of this medicine.
Never share tramadol with another person, especially someone with a history of drug addiction. MISUSE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH. Keep the medicine where others cannot get to it. Selling or giving away this medicine is against the law.
Stop taking all other opioid medications when you start taking tramadol.
Tramadol can be taken with or without food, but take it the same way each time.
Swallow the capsule or tablet whole to avoid exposure to a potentially fatal overdose. Do not crush, chew, break, open, or dissolve.
Measure liquid medicine with the supplied syringe or a dose-measuring device .
Never crush or break a tramadol pill to inhale the powder or mix it into a liquid to inject the drug into your vein. This practice has resulted in death.
You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop using tramadol suddenly. Ask your doctor before stopping the medicine.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep track of your medicine. You should be aware if anyone is using it improperly or without a prescription.

In 1996, one person died from tramadol overdose. In 2011, people died from tramadol overdose. This number may still seem small compared to the 1,000 people whose lives are claimed each year by OxyContin, but how big does the death toll need to get before we sound the alarm?
Considering these figures represent a 154 percent increase in five years, thats pretty alarming.Or what about these numbers? In 2005, just over 10,000 ER visits were tramadol related. In 2011, tramadol-related visits totaled over 27,000.
Tramadol 9 Risky Tramadol Side Effects And Symptoms
Tramadol use in the U.S. has become much more widespread in recent years, with the number of tramadol prescriptions having increased by 88% from 2008 to 2013. Tramadol is a pain reliever that works similarly to opioids like oxycodone, but that produces side effects and symptoms that differ in type and severity, that are often far more dangerous. Tramadol was initially created as a safer and less addictive alternative to oxycodone, but has serious health consequences when misused or combined with alcohol or any other substance including prescription drugs.
Between 2005 and 2011, the number of visits to U.S. emergency rooms involving tramadol misuse and abuse increased by 250% putting tramadol in the spotlight alongside other top drugs of abuse. Tramadol produces the same side effects as all other opioids, along with extra side effects that include seizures, serotonin syndrome, and suicidal tendencies, among many others. Tramadol is also associated with a high risk for dependence and addiction both of which can eventually lead to an overdose, coma, or death when left untreated.
Heres an in-depth look at the addictive potential of tramadol, along with 10 risky side effects and symptoms to watch out for if you or a loved one uses this pain reliever.
Tramadol Is An Odd Unpredictable Opioid Scientists Say
Scientists whove studied the curious chemistry of the opioid tramadol use an array of adjectives to describe it: unpredictable, messy, crazy.
Tramadol is unlike most other opioids in that it must pass through the liver to be metabolized into its most potent form. At the same time, it releases another type of drug that acts as an antidepressant because it increases levels of serotonin in the brain, which elevates mood.
But how much opioid and how much antidepressant is released is heavily dependent on users genetics, said Bertha Madras, professor of psychobiology at Harvard Medical School. One person might get a potent dose of opioid, while the next gets nearly none.
Research has shown that some ethnic groups are prone to process tramadol as a far more potent opioid, upping the risk of addiction, Madras said. In a cruel twist, those groups are largely clustered in the areas that lack access to other opioid medications, so are dependent on tramadol for pain relief: Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia. Studies suggest nearly 30% of North Africans metabolize tramadol to the most active opioid potency, she said, compared with about 1 percent of northern Europeans.
Tramadol is most likely not as problematic as some of the big gun opioids like oxycodone and fentanyl and heroin, Madras said. But it certainly can be in certain populations and it certainly can be if its abused by a wider and wider swath of the population.
What Type Of Withdrawal Symptoms From Tramadol Might A Patient Experience
Indicated for moderate to moderately severe pain, tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic that consists of two enantiomers that contribute to its analgesic activity.1 Tramadol is metabolized via CYP3A4, CYP2B6, and CYP2D6 to produce five metabolites: M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5. The medication undergoes CYP2D6 metabolism to its active metabolite -O-desmethyl-tramadol , which has higher affinity for the opioid receptor compared to the parent compound .1
While tramadol may be a viable agent for pain relief, there are several scenarios in which a provider may recommend discontinuation of the medication. These scenarios may include inadequate pain response, intolerable side effects, and drug-drug/drug-disease interactions, among others.
How And When To Take It
Zolpidem tablets come in 2 different strengths 5mg and 10mg.
The usual dose is one 10mg tablet, taken 1 hour before you go to bed. If you’re over 65 years old, or if you have kidney or liver problems, the doctor may start you on a lower dose of 5mg.
Swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew it. You can take zolpidem with or without food.
It’s important to follow the doctors advice when taking this medicine. They may ask you to take a tablet just 2 or 3 nights a week, instead of every night.
Tramadol Weird Half Awake Half Asleep State
So I take tramadol as needed for back pain. Usually just take it after working 13 hours in the hospital on my feet. I take 2 50mg pills and then take an additional one 2 hours after the first dose if I’m still in severe pain. Normally it doesn’t bother me too much but sometimes I get the typical tramadol itch which I can deal with. The other thing that weirdshe me out is I fall into this half awake half asleep state. Like I can hear the TV on when I’m asleep or wake up like I nevery fell asleep at all. I only sleep for 2 hours at a time max when this happens and yet I don’t feel like I need more sleep. I become almost an insomniac. Sometimes I wake up and very quickly I might hallucinate a person but they disappear very fast. Now I know that they aren’t really so I’m aware of that. It’s this weird in between state i fall into that I’m not sure what to think of. I’m a registered nurse and I work in the ER so I usually can figure these things out but I’m at a loss here so any info would be awesome. Thanks so much everyone.
