Is Restless Legs Syndrome Underdiagnosed Or Overhyped

How to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Many websites and print articles describe RLS as common, underdiagnosed, and undertreated, encouraging people who experience the unpleasant condition to seek medical help.

But a 2006 Public Library of Science article, Giving Legs to Restless Legs: A Case Study of How the Media Helps Make People Sick, makes the case that RLS has been overhyped by drug-company marketing campaigns. They write: For some people, symptoms are severe enough to be disabling. But for many others with milder problems, these symptoms are just the transient experiences of everyday life.

Adding Iron To Your Diet

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, lack of iron or the incorrect use of iron in the brain are the main causes of RLS. Several conditions may impact iron levels, including:

  • kidney failure

2009 study showed people who are obese have an increased risk of RLS. This may be because obesity is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lower dopamine receptors. All of these conditions have the potential to cause RLS.

Some people report that avoiding gluten eases RLS. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Its found in foods such as breads and baked goods, as well as in some condiments, soups, and salad dressings.

There isnt any scientific evidence that gluten causes RLS. If you feel gluten may be behind your symptoms, consider eliminating gluten for a few weeks to see if your symptoms improve.

How Do You Sleep With Restless Legs

To improve sleep, people with restless legs syndrome need to make a few lifestyle changes that include avoiding alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine, practicing good sleep hygiene, relaxing before bed with a warm bath or stretching, moderate daily exercise, and leg massage. People with severe RLS will need prescription medications to reduce symptoms sufficiently to be able to sleep.

Do You Have Restless Legs Syndrome

Sleep experts at the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine have created a list of possible RLS-related symptoms and other questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you get an irresistible urge to move your legs?
  • Do your symptoms start while you’re sitting or lying down?
  • Are your symptoms worse at night?
  • Does movement make you feel better?
  • Have you been told that you kick, shake or otherwise move your legs while sleeping?
  • Do you often have trouble falling or staying asleep?
  • Are you tired during the day?
  • Does anyone else in your family have restless legs?
  • How much caffeine do you have daily?
  • What is your typical exercise program?
  • Are you at risk of low iron due to such things as limiting meat in your diet, donating blood frequently or blood loss from a recent surgery?

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome

Do Bananas help with Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless Leg Syndrome is often considered to be a condition of the nervous system associated with an overwhelming urge to move the legs. Sufferers often describe the urge as a creeping sensation that begins in the feet, calves and thighs, sometimes accompanied by involuntary jerks, numbness and pins and needles.

Its thought to sometimes worsen at night and, as a result, can lead to poor sleep patterns. Unfortunately, primary Restless Leg Syndrome is known as an idiopathic condition, which means it can often have no direct cause. Although genetics are thought to play a role as around 40% of primary Restless Leg sufferers have a family history of the condition.

Its also twice as likely to affect women as men as it is a frequent symptom experienced during pregnancy.

What Is Restless Legs A Sign Of

Restless legs syndrome can be caused by other conditions that, when successfully treated, may completely resolve the RLS. These include iron deficiency, folate deficiency, magnesium deficiency, anemia, pregnancy, neuropathy, diabetes, fibromyalgia, amyloidosis, celiac disease, venous insufficiency, and end-stage kidney disease.

Maintain Good Sleep Hygiene

About three in four RLS patients have problems sleeping. Good sleep hygiene may not affect RLS symptoms but can improve sleep and increase daytime wakefulness. Go to bed at the same time every night, turn off the light, and eliminate distractions. Use yoga, stretching, or warm baths to relax before bedtime. Avoid heavy meals, excitement, or stimulants like caffeine before bedtime.

Diet Recommendations For People With Restless Leg Syndrome

There are no specific dietary guidelines for people with restless leg syndrome. But it is a good idea to review your diet to ensure you are getting enough essential vitamins and minerals. Try cutting down on high-calorie foods that have little or no nutritional value.

Some people with RLS symptoms are particularly deficient in vitamins and minerals. If so, you can make some changes in your diet or take supplements. It all depends on what your test results show.

If you are deficient in iron, try incorporating more of these iron-rich foods into your diet:

  • green leafy vegetables
  • gunpowder, oranges, tangerines, strawberries, kiwi, watermelons
  • tomatoes, peppers
  • broccoli, leafy vegetables

Caffeine is deceptive. It can cause RLS symptoms in some people, but it helps others. It is worth a little effort to see if caffeine affects your symptoms.

Alcohol can make RLS worse, and it is known to interfere with sleep. Try to avoid it, especially in the evening.

Summary: Try to incorporate a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, emphasising dark leafy greens.

Why Do People Drink When They Have Restless Leg Syndrome

Some people choose to drink alcohol when they have restless leg syndrome because they believe that it will help them to fall asleep at night. While alcohol can temporarily put you to sleep, it will often wake you back up in the middle of the night, forcing you to deal with even worse symptoms of restless leg syndrome in the process.

How Is Restless Legs Syndrome Diagnosed

Restless legs syndrome is usually diagnosed from the symptoms. A physical exam and testing are only used to rule out other conditions.

Most patients will first bring the problem to a family practitioner, but RLS is definitively diagnosed and treated by specialists including neurologists, psychiatrists, and sleep specialists.

There are five symptoms required for a diagnosis of RLS:

  • An intense urge to move the legs, often with abnormal feelings in the legs such as itching or creeping
  • The urge begins or worsens with inactivity
  • Symptoms are partly or completely relieved with walking or stretching at least as long as the activity continues
  • Symptoms worsen in the evening or at night or are only present in the evening or night
  • Symptoms are not accounted for by any other condition

A medical history will help determine whether the condition is primary or secondary. The doctor will look for risk factors such as:

  • Family history of RLS
  • Medication use
  • A history of other conditions

Family history strongly indicates the condition may be inherited. If other conditions are present, a healthcare provider may start by addressing those problems first.

The physical exam usually turns up normal results. The physician, however, will be looking for signs of other neurological conditions, such as Parkinsons disease or a compressed spinal nerve , that might be causing the symptoms.

What Is Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome is an urge to move the legs. Its usually accompanied by uncomfortable or unpleasant sensations in the legs, says Dr DAnna. He adds that symptoms must:

a) Begin or worsen during periods of rest in activities such as lying down or sitting.

b) Be partially or totally relieved by movement, such as walking or stretching, at least as long as the activity continues.

c) Occur exclusively or predominantly in the evening or night rather than during the day.

We must discount other medical or behavioural conditions first, he says. These include myalgia , venous stasis , leg edema , arthritis, leg cramps, positional discomfort, or habitual foot tapping.

There are two types of Restless Legs Syndrome: primary and secondary. Primary or idiopathic RLS and secondary RLS, which causes the same symptoms as primary. The difference is that secondary RLS has an identifiable cause, he explains.

Medical Restless Legs Syndrome treatment, following a consultation with a neurologist, usually starts when symptoms interfere with a patients quality of life, says Dr DAnna. Diagnosis of RLS requires that its symptoms cause concern, distress, sleep disturbance, or other impairment. Mild or infrequent symptoms may not require treatment, he says, although the home remedies suggested below can help your symptoms.

Restless Leg Syndrome can be a frustrating condition.

If Im Pregnant Are My Dietary Needs The Same

Do Bananas help with Restless Leg Syndrome? in 2020 ...

According to a 2009 study, up to 26 percent of pregnant women have RLS. The exact cause isnt clear, but changing hormones, low dopamine levels, and nutrient deficiencies may be responsible.

If youre pregnant and have RLS symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about getting your iron levels checked. If theyre low, your doctor may recommend eating more iron-rich foods or taking iron supplements.

If diet and lifestyle changes dont help, your doctor may prescribe antiepileptic drugs, opioids, and certain benzodiazepines. According to a 2008 study, these drugs are safe to use during pregnancy. Because all drugs pass through the placenta to your unborn baby, you should use the least amount necessary for the shortest amount of time.

In many cases, pregnancy-related RLS goes away on its own after your baby is born.

Why Are Restless Legs Worse At Night

If nerve cells become damaged, the amount of dopamine in the brain is reduced, which causes muscle spasms and involuntary movements. Dopamine levels naturally fall towards the end of the day, which may explain why the symptoms of restless legs syndrome are often worse in the evening and during the night.

Primary Restless Legs Syndrome

Primary restless legs syndrome tends to begin slowly, around the age of 40. This is earlier than most secondary RLS cases. RLS also runs in families, suggesting a genetic link.

There is research that suggests restless legs syndrome may be connected to problems with a part of the brain called the basal ganglia, which uses dopamine to control muscle movement. If transmission of dopamine signals in this part of the brain becomes impaired, it can result in muscle spasms and jerky movements.

Try Cbd Oil And Cannabinoid Supplements

Did you know that CBD may also help restless legs syndrome?

According to a study by the Clinical Neurosciences Centre in Bordeaux, 84% of participants found CBD helped to calm the more immediate symptoms of RLS.

CBD products have been shown to bring your body into balance to sleep better, respond better, stress less, and recover better.

Its a good idea to talk with your doctor before trying any CBD product, especially if youre taking any medications. But for most people, CBD products are great when looking for sustainable, more organic alternatives.

One product I recommend is called Drops+ Sleep from a company called Plant People. Drops+ Sleep is a nighttime tincture, essentially an oil that you take to induce relaxation to promote sleep and suppress locomotor activity by activating GABA, CB1, and CB2 receptors.

The key to our products is figuring out the balance, because each person will have a different response. Some are more or less sensitive. These are not sleeping pills in the traditional sense, so theres a different expectation, says Gabe Kennedy, founder of Plant People.

There is sometimes an expectation that people will take a drop of oil and see results. What we have to get to is the root cause, and sometimes theres a lot going on in your life. The western medicine mentality is treating the symptom, not the root cause, he says.

Increase Your Magnesium To Improve Your Sleep

While restless legs syndrome treatment is still evolving, a Mayo Clinic study found magnesium was an effective form of natural therapy. That’s definitely worth noting, since other studies have shown that approximately 48% of Americans do not meet their dietary requirements of magnesium.

How does magnesium improve sleep and RLS symptoms, exactly? It’s a bit science-heavy but bear with me!

Magnesium helps in regulating something known as gamma-aminobutyric acid — or GABA — an important amino acid that plays a key role in your overall sleep health. One of the primary functions of GABA is to help your brain power down for the night, helping you relax, de-stress, and ultimately, fall asleep. Put simply, magnesium helps your body maintain healthy levels of GABA, allowing for more restorative sleep. This calming ritual is a natural boost to your circadian rhythm, too.

For simple ways to add more magnesium in your diet, add green leafy vegetables , legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Magnesium is also added to some breakfast cereals and other fortified foods. Another low-fat and delicious breakfast idea? Try oatmeal, bananas, blackberries, and skim milk — all are excellent and delicious sources of magnesium!

You may also want to ask your healthcare provider if magnesium supplementation for your restless legs syndrome treatment is safe to try.

How to Deal with Restless Leg Syndrome during Pregnancy ...

The main symptom of RLS is an overwhelming urge to move the legs because of uncomfortable and unpleasant feelings in one or both legs.

The sensations in the legs and, in severe cases, the arms are variously described as:

    • Crawling
    • Tenseness
    • Having an electric current

Some people may experience the feelings as painful, but most people feel the sensations as an ache rather than sharp or sudden pain.

    Restless Legs Syndrome Medication

In more severe cases of RLS or when other treatments do not improve symptoms sufficiently, a medical professional may recommend medication for the condition.

    Dopamine agonists

A class of drugs called dopamine agonists work by mimicking dopamine in the brain to stimulate a response. They are also often used to treat Parkinsonâs disease.

Multiple types of dopamine agonists have been approved to treat restless legs syndrome, among them:

    • Bromocriptine
    • Fainting when standing up

Levodopa is a drug that the body converts into dopamine. It is usually taken alongside a drug called carbidopa, which stops levodopa being converted into dopamine before reaching the brain.

Sudden drowsiness and falling asleep can be a side effect of taking levodopa. It is advisable not to drive, operate machinery or take part in potentially dangerous activities until itâs clear how levodopa affects the person taking it.

Levodopa is not recommended for long-term use as it can make restless legs syndrome symptoms worse. Itâs generally prescribed for occasional, short-term use, e.g. when people feel symptoms coming on.

    Anti-seizure medication

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved gabapentin enacarbil for treating restless legs syndrome. Two other anti-seizure medications, pregabalin and gabapentin, are being trialed, but not currently approved by the FDA for RLS treatment.

Possible side effects, which lessen over time, of gabapentin enacarbil include:

    Sleep aids

    • Temazepam

What Are The Most Troubling Aspects Of Rls

    A lack of iron

There is a lot of bleeding during menstruation.Kidney disease is a condition in which the kidneys are damaged.

Anemia is caused by internal problems.

The gastric or peptic ulcer is one of the most common gastrointestinal tract disorders.

In extreme cases, a person may suffer from depression and sleep deprivation.

Humans involuntary movements are to blame for both of these things. These harmful issues can be resolved with prompt treatment.

Iron and magnesium insufficiency are two of the most common causes.

Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves around the outside of the body.

This causes strange sensations and increases the risk of restless leg syndrome.

Diabetics are more likely than non-diabetics to develop preferred neuropathy, making them more vulnerable to the ailment.

Men and women with specific hereditary features may be affected as well.

Especially restless leg syndrome in pregnancy is most common.
