Oral Vs Intravenous Steroids

5 Medications That Can Cause Insomnia | Insomnia

Both types of steroids can cause sleeplessness, primarily due to the very reason they are so effective: their aggressive anti-inflammatory properties. However, oral steroids may be more likely to lead to acute insomnia.

In one 2017 study published in the Journal of Neurology, oral and intravenous steroids used to treat acute MS relapses were compared for both efficacy and safety. While no distinct differences were found between either option, insomnia was significantly associated with the oral route of steroid administration.3

Have Some Chamomile Or Lavender

Chamomile is one of the best remedies that could help you fall asleep quickly. This plant is well known for its sedative, relaxing and stress relieving properties. It contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to specific receptors in your brain that may promote sleepiness and decrease sleeplessness, or the chronic inability to sleep.

Attempt infusionscapsules and essential oils made with chamomile that will help you take advantage of its many benefits.

If you want to use chamomile to fight insomnia, consult with a physician to find the right dose for you.

Lavender essential oil is another powerful weapon against sleeping problems, particularly insomnia. By lowering your blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature, it can help you fall asleep quicker.

Check with a health care professional to determine if lavender essential oil will be ideal for you.

What Is The Difference Between Prednisone And Prednisolone

Both prednisone and prednisolone are man-made glucocorticoids. They are used to treat similar conditions and are generally considered equally effective. However, in people with liver disease, prednisolone is usually preferred. This is because prednisone needs to be converted by liver enzymes into prednisolone before it can work.

Price wise, prednisone is usually much cheaper than prednisolone.

Prednisone: The Steroid That Can Cause Mood Swings

All medicines come with side effects, some good, some bad. The corticosteroid prednisone is no exception. Prednisone has life-saving anti-inflammatory properties. But this miraculous drug is also known to have sinister side effects.

Most doctors will warn patients about weight gain, body hair growth, insomnia, acne, nausea, headache and redistribution of fat to various parts of the body. Corticosteroids can ever affect your bone density.

But too few patients are warned about the psychological side effects of prednisone, and patients can be surprised and confused.

Prednisone affects areas of the brain that manage the regulation of different neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine the feel-good hormones. Feeling happy is a great side effect some people feel with prednisone. Other responses are more menacing, especially if you dont know what to expect. The delayed effect I had to prednisone was startling and scary.

Prednisone treats conditions such as allergic reactions, skin conditions, autoimmune disorders like lupus, breathing disorders, arthritis and ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms Of Adrenal Insufficiency

CINV: Understanding Its Effects on Patients and the ...

Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include:

  • Abrupt, penetrating pain in abdomen, legs or lower back region
  • Severe diarrhea or vomiting
  • Profound weakness
  • Sluggish movement

Tumors, cancer, congenital condition and several other health conditions can also affect the adrenal gland, pituitary gland or other endocrine organs. When your endocrine system does not work properly, the secretion of cortisol and sometimes aldosterone is also affected – leading to adrenal insufficiency. The condition can happen at any stage of life.

Changes In Natural Sleep

Natural sleep pathways are also affected by steroids. The sleep-wake cycle is primarily regulated in the hypothalamus with circadian release of melatonin from the pineal gland. Melatonin release is highest at night, where it promotes sleep onset and continuity. Upstream, tryptophan is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Both endogenous and exogenous corticosteroids decrease serum melatonin levels with a markedly diminished circadian rhythm secretion., Demish and colleagues found a significant decrease in mean nocturnal melatonin plasma levels after the evening administration of oral dexamethasone 1 mg in 11 healthy volunteers: 127 pg/mL before vs 73 pg/mL after P< .01. This result is likely due to decreased cellular metabolism and melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland. Of note, melatonin has neuroprotective affects, and the administration of melatonin has been shown to reverse some steroid-induced neurotoxicities in animal models.

Steroids also reduce the uptake of tryptophan into the brain. Additionally, in animal models, dexamethasone administration caused a significant decrease in the gene expression of tryptophan hydroxylase, which is part of the multistep pathway in synthesizing serotonin from L-tryptophan. These effects upstream could inhibit the biosynthetic capacity of both melatonin and serotonin.

How Steroid Abuse Affects Sleeping Pattern

Quite possibly the most widely recognized symptom of steroid abuse is the failure to fall or to stay unconscious for satisfactory rest. Lack of sleep increments mental pressure, yet it will likewise diminish your capacity to think unmistakably, accomplish objectives, or control your feelings. Furthermore, numerous individuals likewise report horrendous bad dreams on the off chance that they do rest, so rest is regularly upset due to steroid abuse.

Our bodies make characteristic steroid abuse drugs inside our endocrine framework. You may have known about some of them: testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, and cholesterol. Our common steroids play out various capacities. They decrease modest quantities of irritation, control our digestion, balance the bodys salt substance, help in invulnerability, and help direct our energy and rest. Any interruption in this common example of steroid abuse will affect rest.

Endocrine Systems Produce Steroids, Which Serve These Purposes:

  • Growth of muscles
  • Management of emotions
  • Keeping inflammation at bay

Physicians also cure inflammation caused by steroid abuse, injury, atrophy of muscles, and inflammation of the skin or organ by the concentrated dosage of prescription pills. Sadly, people like bodybuilding and sportsmen all too much misuse concentrated or illicit doses to increase muscle weight and facial attractiveness. The steroid abuse will cause a significant neuropathic dependency if this occurs.

Weight Gain Is Common

Prednisone makes you hungry and weight gain is a common side effect. Fat deposits may occur around your abdomen, face or back of your neck. Fluid retention can also occur and may manifest as leg swelling and a sudden jump in your weight on the scales.

The higher the dose and the longer the treatment, the more likely you are to put on weight. You can control fluid retention by eating a diet low in sodium and eating more foods that contain potassium such as bananas, apricots, and dates. A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates may make you feel fuller for longer, making you less likely to overeat.

What To Know Before You Take A Steroid Injection

Steroid injections may not be the best option for everyone. It is important to inform your doctor, or the medical personnel administering the injection if

  • You recently had a steroid injection.
  • You recently had a vaccine or are planning on getting vaccinated soon.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or in the process of trying to have a baby.
  • You have heart, liver, or kidney problems.
  • You are currently taking other medications.
  • You have or recently had any kind of infection.
  • You have had allergic reactions to steroids before.

Increased Risk Of Infection

Taking prednisone can increase a persons chance of getting mild to serious, life-threatening infections. Larger doses increase the risk, especially doses for immunosuppression. Older age and taking other drugs that also suppress the immune system increase the risk. Doses of 10 mg or lower pose the least risk.

Why Are Cortisol And Aldosterone Hormones So Crucial

Both cortisol and aldosterone hormones are secreted in the outer region of the adrenal glands. Both these hormones play a crucial role in helping the body to tackle stress.

Cortisol comes under the category of glucocorticoid hormones. They affect almost all the tissues and organs in the body. The chief role of the cortisol is to help body deal with stress.

Various other functions of cortisol include:

  • Maintains functioning of the heart, blood vessel, and blood pressure
  • Impedes inflammatory response of the immune system
  • Regulates metabolism

The anterior part of the pituitary gland produces adrenocorticotropic hormone which regulates many hormones in the body including the level of steroid hormone cortisol, secreted from adrenal glands. The hypothalamus is a part of the pituitary gland and brain. First, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone , which trigger hormones that signal the pituitary glands to release ACTH. The released ACTH stimulates adrenal glands to secrete cortisol. After cortisol is secreted, it sends signals back to the hypothalamus and pituitary glands to reduce the trigger hormones.

Aldosterone comes under the category of mineralocorticoid hormones. Aldosterone plays a vital role in maintaining blood pressure and sodium-potassium level in the body. During low aldosterone secretion, your body loses more sodium and retains more potassium.

Can Corticosteroids Cause Acne

Yes, acne is another possible side effect that can happen when taking oral corticosteroids for a long time. But this type of acne looks a bit different than what you might imagine. It tends to appear on the chest, and the pimples are all about the same size and shape.

Steroid acne is also a known side effect for topical corticosteroids. Its more likely to happen with the more potent products, if youre under age 30, and if you place bandages or dressings over the areas where you applied the medication.

Inhaled corticosteroids are unlikely to cause acne. This side effect has only been seen in a few people but could be possible if you are using high doses for long periods of time.

Nasal corticosteroids shouldnt cause acne even if you use them every day because they only have a local effect. There are currently no studies showing they cause this problem.

Understanding Steroids And Adrenal Insufficiency

Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the adrenal glands of your body do not produce adequate steroid hormones, principally cortisol and sometimes accompanied with low production of aldosterone as well. This can be documented by low cortisol level in laboratory tests. Your body has a pair of adrenal glands each situated above a kidney. Adrenal glands are the center for the production of vital anti-stress hormones. These steroid hormones also referred to as corticosteroid hormones are secreted by the adrenal cortex.

During symptoms raised due to inadequate secretions of corticosteroids, its synthetic versions are administered to alleviate the condition. Synthetic corticosteroids cause similar effects as that of the natural corticosteroids secreted by the adrenal cortex. These drugs are also used to treat various health disorders including skin irritation, immune system, inflammation and other conditions.

The adrenal gland is divided into two regions. The inner region is known as adrenal medulla which produces stress hormones noradrenaline and adrenaline. The outer region is known as adrenal cortex which secretes numerous kinds of steroid hormones. Aldosterone, cortisol, and cortisone are the main steroids.

Aldosterone maintains salt and fluid balance of the body whereas cortisol and cortisone maintain the bodys metabolism and inhibits inflammation.

Prednisone Use In Children

Acute vs. Chronic Insomnia | Insomnia

Children taking prednisone are of special concern and require careful consideration. A child’s growth rate may be impaired, ultimately resulting in the delay of puberty. Children taking prednisone for any length of time should be monitored closely for any signs of long-term side effects such as impaired growth.

To avoid growth impairment in children, smaller prednisone dosages are often recommended. Dosing every other day may also help.

Clinical Study Demonstrating Effects Of Steroids And Adrenal Insufficiency

Studies demonstrate the effect of synthetic corticosteroids on adrenal insufficiency. Researchers conducted a study to know the effect of fluticasone propionate and budesonide on the cortisol level. The study revealed that fluticasone propionate produced greater adrenal suppression in both plasma and urinary cortisol than budesonide.

During the research, 12 adult asthmatic patients were given chronic doses of inhaled fluticasone propionate and budesonide through a metered dose inhaler. The dose was given twice a day in quantity of 250 mg, 500 mg and 1,000 mg at 8 hours and 22 hours for four consecutive days. After the completion of the eighth dose, the patients were then examined for overnight urinary cortisol excretion and plasma cortisol level at 8 hours and 10 hours respectively.

Results showed that when compared to budesonide, fluticasone propionate had greater effect on overnight urinary cortisol/creatinine ratio.

Since synthetic corticosteroids suppress adrenals, they are dosed in lower quantities to prevent any adrenal crash. However, according to research published on April 2015 in the online edition of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, patients who use nasal sprays and asthma steroid inhalers for common allergies are at risk of developing adrenal insufficiency.

The survey covered 74 articles with 3,753 asthmatic participants. At the end of the survey, the result showed that:

Insomnia Resulting From Injections

Cortisone injected into local areas such as hip and shoulder are usually well-tolerated and are less likely than other types of steroid medications to produce serious side effects.

Insomnia is, however, one of the potential side effects that can be experienced with the injection. Cortisone levels generally decrease rapidly in the evening to a minimal level right before bedtime. A cortisol injection, especially one given later in the day, can unintentionally keep your body awake and your mind stimulated by stimulating your adrenal glands and keeping your body in a state of fight or flight.

Prednisone Can Cause Sleeplessness

Insomnia. Sleep depravation.

Q: My son was given prednisone at a walk-in clinic for a sinus infection. After only one dose, he had a horrible reaction racing heartbeat, anxiety and sleeplessness.

After an entire week, he still struggles to get even four hours of sleep. The other symptoms are dissipating, but the insomnia is still a problem. The worst thing is that the doctor didnt bother to tell him about such side effects.

A: Corticosteroids, including prednisone, are notorious for interfering with sleep. Doctors dont always mention insomnia as a side effect of medications. Scores of other drugs, from albuterol for asthma to ziprasidone for psychiatric problems, can also disturb sleep.

Our eGuide to Getting a Good Nights Sleep lists many problematic drugs, discusses sleeping pills and offers nondrug approaches. This online resource is available under the Health eGuides tab at

Q: I am very angry about the way the Food and Drug Administration handled Chantix side-effect information. My doctor was not aware that this drug could cause serious psychiatric side effects.

Thank God I kept my depression and suicidal thoughts under control. Believe me, it caused lasting damage to my relationships with my loved ones. As far as I can tell, the FDA focused far more on the benefits of this drug than on its serious risks.
