Anyone who has ever read any of my articles discussing anxiety and depression should know that I believe that;prolonged stress is the number one enemy of all anxiety and depression sufferers.

In my eyes, stress is the number one epidemic that the modern man encounters in his daily life.

Yet in the case of depression, stress seems to be a;particularly;problematic topic.

You see, not only ca stress be causing depression, but it can actually contribute to hypersomnia.Stress can make you very fatigued and add to your sleeping;problems.

Furthermore, stress is also noted to decrease your quality of sleep and affect the activity in your amygdala.To;put it simply, it arguments all of the;problems that we have discussed thus far.

The fact that stress is a major cause of depression makes it even more difficult to deal with.

Common Symptoms Of Depression

Symptoms of depression can vary. They may manifest themselves differently from person to person. However, for most people, depression symptoms affect their ability to perform daily activities, interact with others, or go to work or go to school. Depression involves prolonged sadness and hopelessness, impaired thinking, distorted Self-appraisals, biased memory processing, and unpleasant dreams/nightmares. It has been known for some time that there is a strong relation between sleep and depression. When we get depressed we sleep too much or too little and we wake up too early in the morning. We never feel totally refreshed by sleep and sleep, when it comes, is fitful and punctuated by too many awakenings. I know of no cases of depression without profound disruption of sleep. It may even be that disruption of sleep can trigger depressive episodes. Why is depression so intimately related to sleep? Can an understanding of this relationship help us to treat depressive episodes? One indication that the answer to this question is yes is that one or two nights of deliberate sleep deprivation can result in lifting of mood symptoms for some depressed patients.

They Are Exhausted/tired As A Result Of Working Too Hard

This goes hand-in-hand with the first reason. Usually, when people sleep for short periods, it is mostly because they are working or overworking themselves. And when you do this over an extended period, it takes its toll on the body and leads to general or extreme fatigue and/or tiredness. And the bodys first response to fatigue/tiredness is always to sleep. You feel so tired that you cant seem to help yourself but doze off. And where you doze off because of tiredness your body will ensure that you get the right dose of sleep before you can wake up. And usually, that right dose almost always means oversleeping so that you catch up on lost sleep time.

Oversleeping is not only an issue among young people with depression. Among older adults, symptoms of insomnia may be more common. But many older adults also experience hypersomnia in connection with depression. Women, in particular, may be more likely to oversleep and feel excessively tired during the day if they are depressed.

Its also important to remember that among people with depression, sleep difficulties often take shifting, variable forms. People with depression may experience symptoms of both insomnia and hypersomnia. A 2014 study investigated how often insomnia and hypersomnia occur together in adults with depression in the U.S. Scientists found that more than 27 percent have whats known as co-occurring insomnia and hypersomnia. They Could Have A Tough Time Responding To Affection And Concern

The main misconception about depression, which has been hinted at in the paragraphs above, is that its about feeling sad.

On the contrary, depression is mostly not feeling anything, or only partially and briefly experiencing emotions. It depends on the individual, but some people with depression report feeling almost numb, and the closest thing to an emotion they experience is a kind of sadness and/or irritation.

Because of this,;appropriately responding to gestures or words of affection will be difficult for them, or they just dont think about it any more.

They may even get irrationally irritated or annoyed with you over it, because it may simply be too difficult for their brains to process and respond to your loving gestures.

It Could Also Be A Function Of Their Age

The older we get as humans the longer we want to sleep. This appears to be another natural biological function/process of the body. And this is especially exacerbated in those persons who worked extremely hard while they were younger and slept very little as a result. And for some of those people, they would have resorted to things like caffeine to ensure they keep cheating the body and getting away with being sleep deprived.

Where this happens to be the case, when they eventually slow down at an older age, the toll of earlier years will catch up and they will find that in most cases they sleep for very long hours. It is nothing to be concerned about. The body is simply doing what it does best looking out for itself.

It is important to identify sleep problems in older adults. If you really find an elderly sleeping too much, you may want to learn more about the underlying cause first. This could be a warning sign of dementia, so you need to have a correct diagnosis first. Your doctor will help you develop a plan to improve things a bit.

Similarly, you may want to consider the medications you are giving to an elderly in your home. See if they are taking antipsychotic medications, antihistamines, cardiovascular medications, or other medications to treat a medical condition. Talk to your doctor and ask about the side effects of these medications. They may change the prescription to see if it improves the condition of the patient.

Whats more, Alzheimers disease can cause sleep disruptions and sleep problems, but you can help the patient by establishing a nighttime routine as well as a daytime routine that includes a degree of physical activity. Sometimes, an older adult in your home feels a bit left out, and this makes them feel bored and depressed. The solution is to sit with them, talk to them, and involve them in your day-to-day activities to make them feel active throughout the day.

Significant feelings of sadness or a loss of interest in their normal daily activities are common in all depressive disorders. Specific forms of depression vary based on the severity of symptoms and the situation in which they develop.

The most well-known type is major depressive disorder, and it is marked by symptoms that affect a person virtually every day for an extended period of time. It commonly involves sleep disruptions.

Persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia or chronic depression, may involve fewer symptoms than major depression, but symptoms last for at least two years and any symptom-free period lasts no longer than two months.
