  • First of all, you should open the Health app on iPhone. Find and tap Browse which is located on the bottom-right of the screen, then click on Sleep.
  • After that, under Set Up Sleep you will find under Get Started, tap it.
  • Click Next. Use the plus and minus buttons to set a sleep goal, then tap Next.
  • Then, you should set a sleep schedule by using the circular slider. Tap the weekdays you want the schedule to apply to, then tap Add.
  • Next, you should click Add Schedule in order to add another sleep schedule. When youre finished, tap Next.

    In the morning, the Apple Watch thumps with a wake-up alarm. I feel it like a steady tap. I think I missed the first few minutes it was going off. It offers a snooze option, which I use. It reminds me of silent alarms I’ve used on Fitbit and even Pebble way back.     The Apple Watch 5 has plenty of potential when it comes to tracking your movement or logging your runs and walks. With each iteration, Apple adds more functionalities to this smartwatch. And now, sleep tracking is one of the features to join the herd.

    Though you could track your sleep patterns before, Apple hasnt integrated these functions by default until watchOS7 and iOS 14. Although this feature does come in handy, it’s not impressive, at least for now.

    Hence, we thought of compiling two ways to track your sleep habits and patterns using the Apple Watch. The first one uses the native app, while in the second method, we explore a third-party app that gives a whole new meaning to sleep tracking.

    Sleep Tracker App For Apple Watch

    Just a few days in, the sleep feature seems about as straightforward as I expected. And as bare-bones. Being aware of sleep schedules is helpful and I love the system’s new powering-down and wake-up pings, which feel like necessary parts of making the Apple Watch a wear-to-bed device. But the battery life of the Apple Watch doesn’t feel ideal at all for sleep tracking and I’d like to see more analysis than just total hours and minutes in bed. Maybe something will come with the Apple Watch 6. Maybe Apple is going to announce a sleep study to pursue future features. But so far this feels like one shoe dropping in a larger Apple sleep tech solution.

    Our integration with Apple Watch for iPhone is here! Is the Watch stand alone?Yes. You dont need to engage with your phone at all, as you go to bed and wake up with the Watch. The Watch analyses your sleep during the night, wakes you up at the time youve set and then transfers the analysis to your phone. You can view the nights analysis on your phone, whenever you feel like it.

    Does the Watch sleep analysis transfer to my phone?Yes. Isnt it lovely? Just use your Watch as you sleep and the analysis shifts to your phone, when you wake up. Sometimes, it might take a while, but youll be notified when its done.

    Alarm modes on the Watch appThe “No alarm, only sleep analysis” option is not available on the Watch at this point in time due to restrictions within the Watch OS. But if this changes, we will hopefully be able to implement this as well.

    Do you record snoring when using the Watch?When using the Watch app, we will not be able to detect snoring as we analyze your sleep via movements, detected via the accelerometer in the watch. If you want to detect snoring, you will have to stick to the phone app for now.

    Whats the battery drain then?Not much. 10-15%, depending on what else is going on in your Watch during the night.Why no complication?So far, we got no strong use case for it. But Watch development will continue and a solid complication is part of it.

    How Can You Make Sure Your Apple Watch Is Tracking Sleep

    Apples Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

    To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . From there you can enable tracking sleep with the Apple Watch that will forward that data to the iOS Apple Health app. Its here where you can also enable charging reminders and automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb mode at night though if you want to switch it on manually, look for the new Bedtime button on your control center.

    Apple currently doesnt provide a sleep tracker for the Apple Watch. Even though theres a Sleep category in Apples Health app, that information comes from third-party sleep tracking apps that are already installed on your iPhone. To track your sleep, you have to use a third-party solution, like AutoSleep or Pillow.

    The Apple Watch also doesnt include hardware specifically designed to track sleep. To get an accurate reading, a device has to measure brain activity. Obviously, thats not the case here, as an Apple watch relies on various built-in technologies to create a general analysis. This data includes inactivity and your heart rate.

    Setting A Sleep Schedule Feels Familiar

    Setting up sleep tracking feels very much like an extension of the years-old iOS feature inside the Clock app that allows bedtime reminders and triggers a yellow shift in the light from your phone’s screen to enter a wind-down experience.

    Sleep schedules get set up on the Apple Watch, or in Apple’s Health app. I picked eight hours, spinning the clock around so my bedtime would be midnight, waking at 8 a.m. I work from home now and the kids aren’t in school.

    Wearable Battery Life Remains The Biggest Problem

    Ever since the first Apple Watch arrived in 2015, Apple has stuck to the same battery life guarantee: 18 hours of run time between charges. The actual number can be much lower if you use the watch to make long phone calls, constantly download data, or track extended runs or workouts. But on the other hand, the latest Apple Watches quietly exceed the 18-hour promise if you disable or only lightly use their new features. Regardless, Apples guideline was simple: Put the watch on your wrist each morning, dont worry about battery life all day, then place it on a charger each night, and repeat ad infinitum.

    Given that the company has had five years to prepare for the addition of sleep tracking which obviously requires users to wear their Watch overnight Apple could have boosted battery life any year with a bigger housing or more power-efficient parts to enable multiday run times. Some competitors have made those choices, relying heavily on longer run times to differentiate their devices. Apple instead decided to market its way around design compromises, recently floating the idea that users should recharge their Watches during morning showers.

    I Have To Pick A New Time To Charge

    Now that I’m not charging the watch overnight, when do I charge? It usually takes about an hour or so. I forgot my first day and the remaining battery life crept until 2:30 p.m. before going dark.

    The day-plus battery on current Apple Watches just doesn’t feel like enough. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see an extended-battery Apple Watch this fall, maybe even with enhanced sleep tracking sensors.

    The Apple WatchOS 7 sleep app shows just overall sleep time, while devices like the Fitbit Versa 2 show estimated light/deep and REM phases, plus a sleep score.

    How To Set Up Sleep Tracking On Apple Watch

    1. Ensure your Apple Watch is on watchOS 7 or later and your iPhone is running iOS 14 or later.

    2. In the Health app on your iPhone, set up Sleep. You can also go through this process on the Apple Watch itself in the Sleep app.

    3. Firstly, choose the duration of sleep – this is a Sleep goal but it isn’t tracked in the iPhone Activity app like your rings . We’ve chosen eight hours.

    4. Next, you set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake up. There are actually a bunch of options here, so go through them carefully. Do you need to set it for every day, or just weekdays.

    5. You’ll need to set a relaxation time before you go to bed – you can also choose to link this to a Siri Shortcut to do other automation such as turning off a light at home, for example. Wind Down can also be linked to a music playlist, for example.

    6. You can decide whether or not to set an alarm and how you want it to sound. Note that this won’t replace your existing alarms on Apple Watch .

    Your alarm will sound on your iPhone if you don’t have your Apple Watch on and on your Watch if you do have it on. You can fully configure the alarm sound as well. If your Watch is set to silent, it will just vibrate.

    7. You can see your sleep patterns in the Health app on iPhone – view by week or month. You can definitely see the gaps in my sleep here. As you can see, a small child is not conducive to meeting your sleep goal!

    How to Track Your Sleep on Apple Watch

    – In the latest watchOS 7 update Apple enables you to track sleep using the Apple Watch. watchOS 7 works with Apple Watch Series 3, 4, 5 and the new Apple Watch Series 6 we’re expecting. It isn’t compatible with Series 1 or 2.

    Sleep tracking has been a much-wanted feature for the Apple Watch and has been available previously in third-party apps.

    Now though, there is a Sleep app on the watch and it uses motion to detect your sleep time. You obviously need to be wearing your Apple Watch to track your sleep, so you’ll need to change your charging behaviour and juice up in the day. If you don’t, you’ll end up with no charge at 10am the next morning.

    The good thing about Apple Watch sleep tracking is that it is set-and-forget, so your sleep will be tracked without you having to do anything. But it’s fully configurable as you’ll see.

    Data Tracking With Sleep++

    Sleep++ analyzes your sleeping pattern, shows you the number of hours you were in bed, and gives you a percentage measuring how restless you were during the night. You can also view your sleep information on the Sleep++ iPhone app and opt to sync the data to the Health app.

    How Does It Work

    In direct comparison to the likes of Fitbit, Withings and other wearables, Apples sleep tracking is undeniably basic.

    Theres no sleep stage tracking of REM, deep and light cycles, nor is there in-depth analysis of how long it took you to drop off. Why? Because Apple says that stuff isnt really directly improvable by users, thus not useful to know and it has a point.

    The Apple Watch therefore focuses on the tracking of sleep duration, and behaviors you can control for a better night’s sleep. That included consistent bedtime and wake ups, and ironically, spending less time with your devices.

    It uses the motion sensors and accelerometer to monitor your rest, and while it does use the heart rate sensor to track blood oxygen and bpm, this isnt factored into the assessment of your sleep.

    That may seem insanely retro but it works. Were continually comparing and testing the best sleep trackers, and the Apple Watch is up there with the most accurate devices in terms of tracking sleep duration.

    Where Can I View My Sleep Data

    Once you’ve slept a few nights wearing your Apple Watch, you want to know how you’re doing, right? Fortunately, the Health app is fairly comprehensive at offering insight here.

    1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.

    2. Scroll down and tap Browse.

    3. Tap Sleep.

    4. Browse the various graphs available to you that show how well you’re sleeping on each day of the week.

    You can get insight into your sleep duration, the average time in bed, and the average time asleep. It also tracks your heart rate which is a good sign of seeing how well your body is recovering from the day and whether you’re generally in good health.

    Typically, heart rate during sleep can vary between 40-100bpm depending on how much you’ve been exercising, drinking, and if you’re dreaming or having a nightmare.
