Where Can I View My Sleep Data
Once you’ve slept a few nights wearing your Apple Watch, you want to know how you’re doing, right? Fortunately, the Health app is fairly comprehensive at offering insight here.
1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap Browse.
3. Tap Sleep.
4. Browse the various graphs available to you that show how well you’re sleeping on each day of the week.
You can get insight into your sleep duration, the average time in bed, and the average time asleep. It also tracks your heart rate which is a good sign of seeing how well your body is recovering from the day and whether you’re generally in good health.
Typically, heart rate during sleep can vary between 40-100bpm depending on how much you’ve been exercising, drinking, and if you’re dreaming or having a nightmare.
What Do You Need To Access The Apple Watch Sleep App
Youll need an Apple Watch that is capable of running watchOS 7, the last major software update set to roll out for Apples smartwatch. Youll also need an iPhone that runs iOS 14, which requires an iPhone 6s or later.

So if youve got an original Apple Watch or a Series 1 or 2 model, youre sadly out of luck here.
Compatibility: Apple Is Iphone Only
Fitbit is compatible with iOS and Android. You dont have to have a smartphone for Fitbit to work, as you can sync with the excellent desktop Fitbit Dashboard, but its good to have more syncing opportunities and be able to see some fancy stats and graphs on the go.
While only the Versa 3 and Sense smartwatches can run apps themselves, a Fitbit wristband can be integrated with apps such as MapMyRun, MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper, Endomondo, Strava and more.
For obvious reasons Apple Watch is compatible with iOS devices only, so the iPhone is the only smartphone that will work with it, and you really need one for it to make sense.
Apple Watch can run other fitness apps, such as Nike+Run Club, Runtastic Pro, Pocket Yoga, Map My Run, Endomondo, and Cyclemeter GPS. New apps will be released in the future so the Watch should get better functionality as developers work out new features.

Okay But What About The Battery
I have had absolutely no trouble with battery life, but I set up a relatively strict but easy charging routine to make sure my Watch always has a charge. It goes like this.
At night, when I sit down on the couch with my wife and pup to watch a little TV, I put my watch on its charger. The Watch charges in less than an hour, so as long as I leave it on the charger for a little while, I get a full charge and I’m once again good to go.
Really, the only thing necessary is the added discipline of remembering to charge it for a short time. You could charge it while in the shower. You could charge it when you first sit down at your desk at work. Or you could charge it while you watch Star Trek reruns. No matter, it’s not hard as long as you incorporate charging into your daily schedule.

Native Apple Watch Sleep Tracking
With the release of watchOS 7 last year, Apple Watch now officially supports sleep tracking without needing a third-party application.
We went hands-on with the experience when it was released, explaining that Apple is tying Apple Watch sleep-tracking capabilities in with new iPhone features such as Wind Down and Wake Up for a seamless cross-device experience.
Theres a new Sleep app on the Apple Watch, as well as a Sleep Mode that hides your usual watch face and instead shows the current time, as well as what time your alarm is set for. It also disables features like raise-to-wake, so your watch face isnt lighting up in the middle of the night.
To view the sleep data tracked by your Apple Watch, you can go to the Sleep app on Apple Watch or the Health app on iPhone. The actual data here is limited. Apple simply shows you your time asleep, as well as a range for your heart rate. Thats where third-party applications still prove useful. They can offer much more data than Apples native implementation, and you dont have to wait until the fall to get started.
How Does It Work
In direct comparison to the likes of Fitbit, Withings and other wearables, Apples sleep tracking is undeniably basic.

The Apple Watch therefore focuses on the tracking of sleep duration, and behaviors you can control for a better night’s sleep. That included consistent bedtime and wake ups, and ironically, spending less time with your devices.
It uses the motion sensors and accelerometer to monitor your rest, and while it does use the heart rate sensor to track blood oxygen and bpm, this isnt factored into the assessment of your sleep.
That may seem insanely retro but it works. Were continually comparing and testing the best sleep trackers, and the Apple Watch is up there with the most accurate devices in terms of tracking sleep duration.

Data Tracking With Sleep++
Sleep++ analyzes your sleeping pattern, shows you the number of hours you were in bed, and gives you a percentage measuring how restless you were during the night. You can also view your sleep information on the Sleep++ iPhone app and opt to sync the data to the Health app.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
As of February 2021, SleepScore works only on specific phones. It doesnt work with the iPhone 5, 5s, and SE but is compatible with any iPhone with iOS software 10.3.3 or higher . As for Android phones, it works with the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note 8, and Note 9, as well as the Google Pixel 2 XL.
When we asked the company about this limitation, the representative explained that because the app is dependent on a phones speaker and microphone, the company tests the app on each specific phone model for accuracy before supporting that phone. SleepScore says that if youre using an unsupported Android model, you will still be able to track your sleep using that device, but the SleepScore app features and functionality will vary. We also wonder whether this failure to update may open up any security issues on non-compatible phones. To be safe, we think its best for those with incompatible phones to skip SleepScore and try our also-great pick, Sleep Cycle, instead. Android users who dont mind a wonky interface could try Sleep as Android, which contains cool features but is difficult to navigate.
We also wished that the app could track snoring by itself, like Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Sleep as Android can. However, SleepScore Labs does make a companion app to track snoring called Do I Snore or Grind?, which based on our limited testing seemed more sensitive, and possibly more accurate.

Sleep Cycle & Apple Watch Integration
Our integration with Apple Watch for iPhone is here! Is the Watch stand alone?Yes. You dont need to engage with your phone at all, as you go to bed and wake up with the Watch. The Watch analyses your sleep during the night, wakes you up at the time youve set and then transfers the analysis to your phone. You can view the nights analysis on your phone, whenever you feel like it.
Does the Watch sleep analysis transfer to my phone?Yes. Isnt it lovely? Just use your Watch as you sleep and the analysis shifts to your phone, when you wake up. Sometimes, it might take a while, but youll be notified when its done.
Alarm modes on the Watch appThe “No alarm, only sleep analysis” option is not available on the Watch at this point in time due to restrictions within the Watch OS. But if this changes, we will hopefully be able to implement this as well.
Do you record snoring when using the Watch?When using the Watch app, we will not be able to detect snoring as we analyze your sleep via movements, detected via the accelerometer in the watch. If you want to detect snoring, you will have to stick to the phone app for now.
Whats the battery drain then?Not much. 10-15%, depending on what else is going on in your Watch during the night.Why no complication?So far, we got no strong use case for it. But Watch development will continue and a solid complication is part of it.
Battery Life: Fitbit Wins No Contest
The Apple Watch has so many potential uses that its battery runs down a lot faster than standard activity trackers.
Apple says youll get up to 18 hours of active and passive use: thats 90 time-checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of nonstop app use, and a 30-minute workout with Bluetooth music playback from the watch. So you need to charge every night unless you use it only to tell the time in which case you might get three days out of it in Power Reserve Mode.
As mentioned earlier, Apple Watch has much-improved battery life, and with light use can last nearly three full days – and crucially a couple of nights for sleep tracking. But Apple acknowledges the weaker battery life by not having sleep tracking as a built-in app.
The Apple Watch is smart about saving what battery life it has. The watch face always turns off every 15 to 20 seconds. When you put your arm down the screen goes black. When you raise your wrist, the screen returns.
You can also put it into Power Save Mode in the Workout app on your phone to turn off heart-rate tracking completely during runs although thats not great for learning more about your run. Serious runners want detail before, during and after the run, and dont want to carry their iPhone and their Watch with them.
Anyone whos a keen tracker user will know the fear when you are suddenly alerted to a fading battery. Every step must be counted. Overuse your Watch, and it might die during a workout or just moving around during the day.
