Last year, with the introduction of watchOS 7, Apple added the ability to track your sleep metrics using the Apple Watch. Now, with watchOS 8, you can also track your respiratory rate throughout the night, which could help to detect early signs of medical conditions like sleep apnea, and chronic lung disease, among others.

Using its built-in accelerometer, the Apple Watch can track the number of breaths you take per minute while asleep. The results are then recorded in the Health app, which also gives you deeper insight into the data on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

How To Track Your Sleep On Apple Watch

If you’re having trouble sleeping, you may want to monitor your sleep cycle. An Apple Watch makes it easy with its own built-in sleep tracker and support for third-party apps.

Yawwwwn. Waking up feeling tired? Think you’re not getting enough sleep, or even the best kind of sleep? You could turn to your iPhone for help, but it may be better to track your sleep patterns. One way to do that is with a sleep tracker app on your Apple Watch.

In the past, you had to use a third-party app to monitor and record your sleep, but Apple introduced its own integrated sleep tracker with watchOS 7. The built-in tracker gets the job done, but it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles needed to fully track and record every aspect of your sleep. For that reason, you might still want to try a third-party sleep-tracking app to get a more complete picture of your sleep patterns.

Worried about battery power? Don’t be. Your Apple Watch won’t run out of battery in the middle of the night if you give it a power boost before bed. Connect it to the charger for an hour or two before sleep, and it should last the entire night.

These apps aren’t always 100 percent accurate. A more comprehensive test would involve your doctor and a full sleep study where you would be hooked up to monitors. However, these sleep trackers at least offer a good place to start.

Yes, it’s far more simplistic. But there’s still a lot to like, and some unique benefits to using the Apple Watch to watch over your rest.

Update Your Full Schedule

  • Open the Health app and tap Sleep.
  • Tap a schedule in Full Schedule & Options.
  • Tap Edit under the schedule you would like to update.
  • Tap the Days Active and drag the curved slider to set Bedtime and Wake Up times. The slider turns orange if the schedule does not meet your sleep goal.
  • Tap Wake Up Alarm to turn on an alarm and adjust your alarm sound, volume, and haptics.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.
  • You can also turn off your sleep schedule as needed. In the Health app, tap Browse > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options. Then tap Sleep Schedule at the top of the screen to turn your schedule off or on.

As mentioned in our watchOS 7 review, the Sleep app on Apple Watch aims to help you establish a more regular bedtime routine, and hopefully, that will help you get a better night’s sleep.

    It all starts in the new Sleep app included in watchOS 7, and you’ll need to set up your first sleep schedule to get started. Here’s how to set up and use the Sleep app on Apple Watch

    Sleep tracking on WatchOS 7 is overdue, and it’s starting with bedtime guidance.

    It’s been almost five years since I first had a sleep study done at home. I put wires all over my face, wore a pulse oximeter on my finger and confirmed I had sleep apnea. I’ve used a CPAP machine ever since, and I’ve been interested in understanding how well I sleep and how to improve my rest. I’ve tried tons of watches, bed sensors and apps. Of all the smartwatches I’ve tried, the Apple Watch was conspicuously the only one that seemed to lack its own onboard sleep tracking.

    While sleep tracking was possible using other Apple Watch apps, Apple never entered the space formally, despite purchasing sleep-tech company Beddit in 2017. That’s changed with WatchOS 7, unveiled last week at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. It adds sleep tracking as an onboard feature, but you might be surprised at what sleep tracking on Apple’s watch does and doesn’t do. 

    Apple’s Wind Down feature on the iOS 14 is part of the Apple Watch’s sleep experience, too.

    How To Track Sleep

    Sleep tracking is like a sleep recorder using your own body’s signals.     Set Up Sleep On Apple Watch

    Open the Sleep app on your watch . Tap the schedule, then select the Wake Up time if you wish to change it. Turn on an alarm if you need one to wake you up at the right time. Tap the time for Bedtime if you want to change that as well.

    Return to the main screen and tap Full Schedule if you wish to turn off your Sleep Schedule for any specific nights or all nights. Here, you can also add a schedule and change your sleep goal or Wind Down time. Then just wear your watch to bed.

    Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Features

    There are quite a few sleep-related functions that your Apple Watch is capable of performing. These include:

    • Sleep goals to help you sleep the right number of hours
    • Reminders that you should get ready for bed to make sure you get enough sleep
    • A selection of alarm sounds and haptics to start your morning off right
    • Sleep mode to help you wind down and avoid distractions prior to hitting the hay
    • Vitals and motion tracking to measure how restful your sleep is

    How To View Your History In The Health App

    To track your sleep analysis in iOS 13, open the Clock app, tap the Bedtime tab, then tap “Show more in Health.” Your Sleep Analysis shows the amount of time that you spend in bed or asleep. 

    Bedtime in the Clock app tracks time that you spend in bed, but not how much you sleep or move. Your Apple Watch also doesn’t track sleep or time in bed.

    To track how much time you sleep, try using a sleep tracker with the Health app. You can also manually enter how much time you sleep: Open the Clock app, tap the Bedtime tab, then tap “Show more in Health.” In the upper-right corner, tap Add Data. .

    Change The Time And Which Days You Get A Reminder Or Alarm

  • Open the Clock app and tap the Bedtime tab.
  • Under Schedule, tap Bedtime or Wake up.
  • Drag the Bedtime button  or the Alarm button . As you drag, your Bedtime reminder and Wake Up alarm automatically update.
  • Under Days Of Week Active, tap the days that you want to get reminders or alarms. Days that are orange are active.
  • The Autosleep Tracker App

    The app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep; if you don’t, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didn’t wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.

    The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bed—just tap “Yes” or “No.”

    To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap “Settings” in the bottom-right corner.

    Before you use AutoSleep, you’ll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap “Settings” and, on the following screen, scroll down to the “Configure” section and tap “Wizard.”

    Here, you see two toggles: “I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality” and “If I Don’t Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.”

    You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you don’t wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time you’re not wearing your Watch.

    Tap “OK” to continue.

    On the next screen, you can set a “night hour,” which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep “bank” and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

    Edit Your Sleep Schedule On Your Apple Watch

    If you need to update your sleep schedule, you can make changes to your full schedule or for Next Wake Up Only. With Next Wake Up Only, the changes you make apply only to the following day. Changes made to your full schedule apply to all future days.

    If you’re up before your scheduled Wake Up time, you can exit sleep mode. Turn the Digital Crown to unlock your Apple Watch. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Sleep app icon.

    What Are The Best Paid Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Apps

    If you are really serious about tracking your sleep and don’t mind paying a few dollars for that, you can try these apps:

    Autosleep

    is one of the top sleep tracking apps. It works automatically, as the name suggests. This is different from the other apps that need you to tell them when you are going to bed. You can be confident because the accuracy levels are impressive.

    One impressive feature that even the most expensive sleep trackers often get wrong is the sleep and wake-up times from the automatic tracking. It keeps track of your sleep and nightly heart rate. In addition, the Sleep Bank monitors your week’s sleep and tells you whether you reached your goal.

    HeartWatch

    intensely focuses on your heart rate data, then notifies you if there is any suspicious activity. The app is from Tantsissa, the company that also developed Autosleep. It does include sleep tracking features through overlaying Heart Rythm data to show your waking and sleeping heartbeat compared to your regular heartbeats.

    One of the cons is the interface presents so much data that it may seem confusing to use for some people. That is one aspect that must be improved. Nevertheless, if your focus is on the relationship between your heart rate and sleep quality, the app will work well for you. You will not be disappointed with the accuracy.

    What Do I Use

    Despite all of the new entrants into the sleep tracking Apple Watch industry, I still find AutoSleep to be the most powerful option, but that’s not to say it’s perfect. AutoSleep offers you a lot of data, and you can pick and choose whether to read too much into it.

    Additionally, I pair the AutoSleep data with the features introduced with watchOS 7 and iOS 14. You can still use features such as Wind Down and Sleep Mode, and track data using third-party sources such as AutoSleep.

    NapBot is becoming a close second for me, and it’s getting better with each passing update. Both NapBot and AutoSleep, for instance, offer iOS 14 home screen widgets and Apple Watch complications, something that isn’t possible with Apple’s Health data.

    The key, regardless of which application you pick, is to make sure there is some sort of automatic sleep detection feature. This reduces friction and means you don’t have to remember to manually start a sleep tracking session every night before bed. Instead, your Apple Watch can track your sleep in the background, without any interaction from you.

    These apps also integrate with Apple’s Health app, which means you can get an overview of your sleep data alongside everything else in the Health app. The Health app is useful for tracking long-term trends and averages, but if you want detailed data, you’ll have to jump to your third-party app of choice.

    How Does Blood Oxygen Monitoring Work

    What was once a test reserved only for dedicated monitors has now found its way onto smartwatches and fitness trackers – so how does it actually work?

    Well, traditionally, SpO2 monitors would consist of a clip-on device that the user would place on a finger or toe. It would then use red and infrared light sensors to log the volume of oxygen passing through the finger, for example, and continuously monitor this for changes. 

    In the modern sense, of course, this can now be achieved directly from the wrist without any adjustments. Apple, specifically, indicates that it uses four clusters of green, red, infrared LEDs and four photodiodes on the back crystal of the Series 6 in order to measure the light reflected back from the blood.

    I think it’s time we address a serious question. Where is the sleep tracker on our Apple Watch? The latest Apple Watch is set to launch in September of this year. It is the Series 6 and is rumored to come through with much faster performance and even better water resistance.

    And, of course, yes, your Apple Watch, regardless of model and version, is also capable of keeping an eye on your sleeping patterns.

    According to the CDC, there are 50 to 70 million US adults that suffer from some or other sleep disorder. People experiencing sleep insufficiency are more likely to suffer from other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

    That being said, we must have control over our sleeping habits. In this collection, I’ll be sharing with you some of my favorite Apple Watch apps that I use to track my sleep.

    What Are The Best Free Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Apps

    The following are some of the best free apps you can try:

    Pillow

    In-app purchases are included for a premium. The first thing you will notice about is how vibrant it looks. It also performs very well when it comes to working as a sleep tracker. It is free, but if you want to get the most out of it, you have to pay a monthly fee of $4.99 per month or $27.49 for an annual premium subscription.

    It collects your data through a combination of actions, including sounds, your heart rate, and movement. The data is then presented through perfectly created, easy-to-read charts. You will not struggle to understand the graphs because they are apparent and detailed.

    They focus more on your sleep stages than Auto sleep. The app tracks sleep through deep REM and light sleep, time in bed, and the time you go to sleep. Afterward, Pillow delivers a sleep quality score and tracks your heart rate overnight. If you pay a premium, you get access to the sleep lab to get more insights.

    Sleep++

    is one of the most popular Watch sleep apps on the App Store. Its most significant selling point is how simple it is to operate. Everything is free. It does not have paid subscriptions. This is convenient since you will not have to worry about paying for anything.

    However, you can observe your night’s sleep duration, sleep duration, and bedtime consistency score. One thing we love about the app is the long-term trend data, also nicely presented.

    What Does It Track

    When you wear your Apple Watch to bed you’ll see a decent amount of data in the Apple itself. You’ll need to head to Sleep app on the Watch itself.

    You’ll see your previous night’s sleep duration, with a small graphic that outlines any wake ups.

    You’ll also see a summary of sleep duration and consistency over the past 14 days and, when you’ve got a few nights of sleep under your belt, the Apple Watch will tell you if your sleep duration is increasing, decreasing or consistent.

    You can also view sleep data in the Health app.

    In the Sleep section you can see sleep data by week and month, and cycle back through time. This will also show your average time in bed and time asleep for the period.

    The iPhone will also estimate time asleep if you weren’t wearing your Apple Watch based on its usage. However, it stops tracking when your wake time kicks in, which makes the data look a little same-y.

    You can also see heart rate during bed time and have a look at your low and high HR.

    Who Should Get This

    The best Apple Watch app for tracking sleep – The Sweet Setup

    Everyone sleeps, but sleep trackers aren’t for everyone. Personal sleep tracking is a new science—the app makers haven’t nailed accurate readings yet, and the apps are often not great at telling a typical user what to do with the results. In fact, as W. Chris Winter, MD, author of , said, quoting a pessimistic colleague, “The best thing that trackers have allowed us to do is admire our problems.”

    We wouldn’t say we like “admiring” our problems, but we do like to know where we stand—and, considering the popularity of health trackers, plenty of other people feel the same way. As a result, sleep-tracking apps work best for people who are only casually looking for clues as to how they might sleep better at night and emerge the next day feeling energized.

    If you’re an elite athlete, a marine officer, or an airline pilot for whom sleep analysis could make or break your career, these apps are not for you. If you think you might have sleep apnea and are hoping that your phone will save you from a night in a sleep clinic, these apps are also not for you.

    Everyone sleeps, but sleep trackers aren’t for everyone.

    You can find all kinds of sleep trackers, including standalone devices that sit on your nightstand or under your mattress; wearables, such as masks or ; and others as features built into fitness trackers and . We focused on apps because they’re accessible and relatively inexpensive, which makes them far more appealing to most people.

    How To Track Sleep On The Apple Watch

    Use your Apple Watch to create a routine and cultivate better sleep habits. The CDC recommends adults get at least seven hours of shut-eye a night, and the Apple Sleep app can help you get on track. Create your personalized sleep schedule by following the prompts on your device. Once it’s set up, you can adjust your sleep goal and schedule on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Here’s how to set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.

    What About Apple’s Next Watch

    That is the question, isn’t it? Apple’s Sleep Tracking for the current Apple Watch is nothing special. You have to go through the protocol I described above to make sure your Watch stays charged.

    Apple seemed to imply the same would be the case for the Series 6 Watch coming in the fall. But I don’t know. Apple doesn’t typically like releasing mediocre solutions with mediocre hardware. They’re usually content to let app developers fill in the blanks when Apple itself can’t provide a stellar offering.

    There is no doubt that the Apple sleep features of WatchOS 7 are not stellar. So why did Apple do it?

    Now, this is purely speculation, but I’d be willing to bet half a grilled cheese sandwich that the Apple Watch Series 6 will have substantially better battery life. Again, it’s a guess. But it would explain why a sleep app will be able to be part of WatchOS 7.

    No Public Sleep Studies Yet

    Apple has public health studies for areas like heart health, hearing and women’s health, which are enabled through separate opt-in research apps, it has no public sleep studies yet. Instead, “has been doing our sleep studies internally with thousands of people,” Lynch says. Apple could eventually open a public sleep study, if the company intends to study deeper links to conditions like sleep apnea. 

    Fitbit — now acquired by Google — has enabled blood oxygen measurement on its recent trackers with the aim to provide deeper sleep analysis or sleep apnea detection, although no FDA-cleared results have taken place yet. The connection between fitness trackers and accurate sleep analysis has been fuzzy. I’ve worn an Oura ring lately and have been using its sleep scores as a semi-helpful snapshot of my restfulness the night before. Does that score always line up with how I feel? No. I wear my CPAP machine, and it’s not aware of what my sleep trackers are recording. Or vice versa.

    Current Apple Watches still need charging nearly every day, and sleep tracking needs a 30% charge for a night’s recording.

    Edit Your Sleep Schedule

    Tap “Open Sleep Options in Health” to open the Health app, where you can turn on the switch for Sleep Schedule. Tap the Edit link under Full Schedule and set your usual times for going to sleep and waking up. You can also set different times for different days, such as one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.

    Under Additional Details, tap the entry for Sleep Goal and set the number of hours and minutes that you hope to sleep. Tap the entry for Wind Down to select the amount of time for winding down before bed. Tap the entry for Wind Down Shortcuts to set up any shortcuts you’d like to apply during Wind Down. Finally, tap the entry for Options to confirm the options you set in the Sleep app and to set up a few more.
