With each iteration of watchOS, Apple is doubling down on the health features of the Apple Watch. watchOS 7 officially brings the long-overdue native sleep tracking capabilities to the Apple Watch for the first time. However, its basic features leave plenty of space for third-party sleep apps.

The App Store is filled with plenty of such apps. Among them, we have identified the 6 best sleep tracking apps for Apple Watch. But before we talk about them, lets talk in detail about the capabilities of Apple Watchs native Sleep app and compare it with the rest.

  • Open the Health app and tap Sleep.

If the watch is too loose, the accelerometer might register too much movement from you, even when you’re asleep. Wear it too tightly, and you’re probably going to feel somewhat uncomfortable trying to sleep.

    In the past, you had to use a third-party app to monitor and record your sleep, but Apple introduced its own integrated sleep tracker with watchOS 7. The built-in tracker gets the job done, but it doesnt have all the bells and whistles needed to fully track and record every aspect of your sleep. For that reason, you might still want to try a third-party sleep-tracking app to get a more complete picture of your sleep patterns.

    Worried about battery power? Don’t be. Your Apple Watch won’t run out of battery in the middle of the night if you give it a power boost before bed. Connect it to the charger for an hour or two before sleep, and it should last the entire night.

    What If You Really Need Sleep Tracking

    Sure, theres an argument to be made about someone needing to keep a track of their sleeping habits, and considering the amount of attention Apple pays to making sure the Apple Watch is a great fitness companion , it seems like sleep tracking should be somewhere high-up on their to-do list for watchOS.

    Who knows, maybe Apple finally does bring sleep tracking to the Apple Watch with the Series 6 this year. Maybe. I dont think they should though.

    Before Apple implements sleep tracking in the Apple Watch, the company needs to figure out one of two things :

    • The battery needs to last much longer, or,
    • The watch needs to charge considerably faster than it does.

    See, if the battery on the Apple Watch lasted, say, 3 days, sleep tracking would be great. You wear your watch continuously for three days, including while you sleep, and then one night you let it charge. Sure you dont get sleep data for one night, but its better than not getting sleep data ever.

    Second, if the watch charged faster than it does, the current battery situation would resolve itself. You can wear the watch the whole day, sleep with it still on your wrist, and just charge it the next morning while you get ready for work .

    Thats wishful thinking, and while I certainly hope Apple will figure out some way to get this done, I wont hold my breath for it, and I will definitely not be happy about the Apple Watch based on my own hopes for what the future holds for this product.

    Other Minor Issues With The Up App

    Besides automatic sleep detection and the initial;pairing issue, I have found a couple of minor issues that Jawbone hopefully corrects soon, including:

    • Switching between normal and sleep mode should not need five clicks in the app. Tapping the band is much faster and more convenient. So please restore the old behavior or at least make it an option.
    • Making changes that need;to be;synced;to the band, like smart alarm time, sleep mode, etc. is slow because the settings in the app only update after they have synchronized to the band. So Switching to sleep mode takes several seconds before the icon in the app shows the moon, indicating sleep mode is on. As a result, the app appears unresponsive, and you never know if your click/tap was registered until a few seconds later. Instead, Jawbone should change the indicator icons first while syncing in the background.

    The Need For Another Sleep Tracker

    After I had installed iOS 10 Beta on my iPhone 6S Plus, I noticed a minor glitch with the UP app. Every couple of minutes the UP2 band would disconnect from my iPhone, without giving me an option to reconnect other than completely;re-linking the band.

    There wasnt any data loss involved, but it was a bit of a pain in the butt. Nobody forced me to install a beta version of iOS, so this was a classic self-inflicted wound. But it gave me an opportunity to revisit alternative sleep tracking methods that would involve the Apple Watch.

    Data Tracking With Autosleep

    The next morning, open the app and you can see how long you were in bed and how long you actually slept. As the app records each night’s sleep, it keeps track of the average amount of sleep you get.

    On the watch, swipe down on the app’s screen to view more data about your sleep. You will be able to view the amount of total sleep, deep sleep, and overall quality of sleep, how long you were awake during the night, and your average heart rate during the night. You can also see a history of your sleep for as long as you’ve been using the app.

    To see even more information, open AutoSleep on your iPhone and swipe down the different screens. Though other sleep apps are free, AutoSleep is worth the price for its wealth of details.

    How To Monitor Sleep With Apple Watch In Watchos 7

    Automatic sleep tracking is coming to the Apple Watch when watchOS 7 launches this autumn, here’s how it will work:

  • You will need to set up your desired bedtime in the Sleep section of the Health app.
  • On the next screen you can set your requirements for how long you would like to sleep.
  • Next set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake.
  • You can adjust the automatic alarm clock.
  • In addition to assigning your sleep times the system will allocate relaxation time for before going to bed, to help you wind down. Using Siri Shortcuts you could link this to your bedtime routine so that your iPhone adjusts the lighting, plays suitable music and even opens a book in the Books app. At the start of ‘bedtime’ your devices will switch into sleep mode. The lock screen brightness will lower and Do Not disturb will be activated.

    During the night your Watch screen will be dimmed – so you will only be able to see the current time and when you alarm is set for. And most importantly features like raise to wake will be disabled, so you won’t be woken up because your watch screen came on when you moved your arm.

    You will be able to view data in the Sleep app on your Watch and in the Health app on your iPhone.

    Right now if you want to use the Apple Watch to track sleep you could try a third party app, such as Sleep Watch or Sleep Cycle .

    Setting Up The Jawbone Up2

    Setting up the Jawbone UP2 is supposed to be a simple process:

  • Attach the tracker to the charger to activate it
  • Use the iOS app to pair;the tracker to your iPhone
  • I plugged in my Jawbone UP2 and the LEDs lit up as described in the sparse documentation that comes with the device. I didnt immediately pair;the UP2 with my iPhone, but instead, I let it charge for;an hour.

    Pairing;the tracker didnt work as the app couldnt find a;nearby UP device. The following troubleshooting steps didnt resolve the problem either:

    • Disable and re-enable Bluetooth on my iPhone
    • Restart iPhone
    • Delete and re-install Jawbone UP app
    • Try to link tracker to my wifes iPhone
    • Attempt soft-reset of tracker

    It turned out, my Jawbone UP2 froze and couldnt even be reset using the method described in the;support article.;After I had spent an hour trying to get the Jawbone UP2 to work, I gave up. I was annoyed;and wanted to return the band to;Amazon.

    The next morning I decided to give it another shot, and to my surprise, the soft reset worked, and I could pair;the tracker to my iPhone.

    Both companies come out with new products fairly regularly, so if you are a person who always wants the newest and greatest, they will both age relatively quickly. However, if you are talking about ability to function over time, both the Fitbit and the Apple Watch are durable devices.

    Fitbit has lots of waterproof options and the Apple Watch is a waterproof device. The Fitbit does have some more heavy-duty options that can be good for kids who play rough on the playground, however, both can stand up well to your typical wear and tear.

    The Apple Watch uses a tremendous amount of power, and therefore one might easily be led to believe it would provide a lot of valuable data. However, if you are considering buying the watch, then you should not set high expectations.

    Nevertheless, the experience can be different for everyone.
