How The Apple Watch Tracks Sleep

It’s rare that Apple lags far behind other brands, but Apple didn’t have its own sleep app until recently: you had to use a third-party app, such as Pillow.;

As of watchOS 7, however, you can track your sleep through Apple’s built-in Sleep app. Watch OS 7 works with the Apple Watch Series 3, 4 and 5, as well as the new Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE. If you own one of the earlier versions, make sure your OS is updated. WatchOS 7 isn’t compatible with the Series 1 or 2, though.;

Once you’ve set up sleep-tracking on your Apple Watch, the Sleep app can detect when and how you’re sleeping, based on your movement and your heart rate. You can use it to set sleep schedules and goals and request a wakeup alarm. You can also set a wind-down time, meaning the watch will go into Sleep Mode for a period in advance of you going to sleep.;

To our own surprise, we weren’t hugely impressed by the Apple Sleep app. It’s crammed with information, but, aside from the heart rate information, not much of it is all that useful. We’ve tried many other watches that are easier to use for sleep-tracking while also providing for information. You won’t get information on sleep phases either although, as we explained, such data shouldn’t be taken too literally anyway.

Add Or Edit A Sleep Schedule

To edit a Sleep Schedule, from the Sleep app screen select the desired option then edit desired settings.;Note: To edit additional Sleep settings, from the Sleep app screen select Full schedule. Select Sleep Goal to edit your Sleep goal. Select Wind Down to set a time for Sleep mode to turn on before bedtime.;To add a new Sleep Schedule, select Full Schedule> scroll to and select Add Schedule> set desired alert times and settings then select Add.;

Manually Turn It On Every Night

Swipeup to the Control Center on your Apple Watch, tap on the Do Not Disturb icon, and then tap on the “Sleep” tab.

You can also do this on your iPhone, which will then automatically put your Apple Watch into Sleep Mode, too. To do this, swipe down to the Control Center, tap on the Focus tab, and then tap the Sleep icon.

What was once a test reserved only for dedicated monitors has now found its way onto smartwatches and fitness trackers – so how does it actually work?

Well, traditionally, SpO2 monitors would consist of a clip-on device that the user would place on a finger or toe. It would then use red and infrared light sensors to log the volume of oxygen passing through the finger, for example, and continuously monitor this for changes.;

In the modern sense, of course, this can now be achieved directly from the wrist without any adjustments. Apple, specifically, indicates that it uses four clusters of green, red, infrared LEDs and four photodiodes on the back crystal of the Series 6 in order to measure the light reflected back from the blood.

The only Fitbits with a microphone are the Versa 2, Versa 3 and Sense, which uses the mic to operate Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant .

With both the top-end Fitbit Sense and Versa 3, you can now take hands-free Bluetooth calls with the on-device microphone and speakers, send incoming calls to voicemail, and control volume without reaching for a phone. Android users can also respond to text messages on-the-go with voice-to-text commands.

Likewise, the Apple Watch has a microphone and a speaker, so you can talk to it and it can talk to you. You can also use the mic to do voice dictation, send audio messages, and chat to friends via the Phone app. It also boasts up to 32GB of storage so you can keep a bunch of your dearest photos on your wrist.

The Apple Watch finally has its own built-in sleep tracking but it’s a very basic affair. If you want more data about your slumber, you’ll need a third party Apple Watch sleep app.

The beauty of the Apple Watch is that there’s a rich ecosystem of third party apps, which expand the feature set beyond the standard watchOS experience. So although Apple hasn’t natively added sleep tracking, there’s no shortage of apps to fill the void.

Apple has enabled the sleep tracking experience to be a little easier. There’s a Bedtime mode that will put your watch into a do not disturb mode between certain hours, and stop the smartwatch from blinding you with the screen wake backlight.

A typical night’s sleep follows the pattern below, cycling through Stages 1 to REM every 90-110 minutes, with REM cycles getting longer each time.;


Stage 1 – light sleep

We drift in and out of sleep, our eyes move slowly and our muscle activity slows down. We are easily woken up again.;

Stage 2 – also fairly light sleep

Our bodies start preparing for deep sleep. Our eye movements, heart rate and brain waves slow down. Our body temperature drops.;

Stage 3 – deep sleep

Deep sleep or slow wave sleep. Our heart rate and breathing rate are at their lowest, our muscles are relaxed and our brain waves slow down further.;

For healthy adults, 15-20% of your sleep should be deep sleep.;

We are difficult to rouse and can feel disorientated if woken up from deep sleep.;

REM sleep

We dream. Technically REM sleep isn’t the only period of sleep in which we dream, but the vivid, hallucinogenic, often emotional, and bizarre experiences which seem to form a narrative come from REM sleep.;

Our eyes are closed but dart rapidly from side to side. Our brain activity returns to a more wakeful state.;

Our breathing becomes faster, irregular and shallow.;

Interestingly, studies show that getting enough REM sleep helps us better read the social world around us. Insufficient REM sleep can, amongst other things, blunt our ability to discern changes in others’ facial expressions and, thus, make it harder for us to navigate social situations.;

Use Respiratory Rate Tracking On Apple Watch

The new sleeping respiratory rate tracking on Apple Watch is a useful new feature added to Apple Watches. Since the feature is available with watchOS 8, it should be available on Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4, Series 5, SE, and Series 6. Plus, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 will obviously get it when it launches in the fall later this year. So, have you started using Apple Watchs new respiratory rate tracking feature yet? Sleep Data Is Modest And Not Particularly Actionable

Apples sleep tracking app interface is simple. Tell it your preferred bedtime schedule in my case, 11 p.m. to just before 6 a.m. and it will be looking out for sleep during those times . It turns out that you must set up tracking schedules to cover each individual day of the week or use separate schedules for weekdays and weekends. I didnt realize until too late that the Watch hadnt recorded data for two full nights because I hadnt set up a separate weekend schedule to cover them.

Assuming the Watch gathers your data properly, youll see a very modest display of data, including a bar representing your total time asleep, the timestamps indicating sleep start and end points, and a bar chart covering the last 14 days. If you want a deeper dive, you can open the Health app on an iPhone to see your average time in bed and average time asleep and under some conditions, a correlation of your overnight heart rate data with your sleeping schedule. When I checked the Health app, one day the heart rate data was there, but another day it disappeared from the apps list of Highlights and I couldnt find it.

Apple has suggested its providing little data to keep users from obsessing over their sleep schedules, as that might inadvertently generate even more anxiety or restlessness. Im still not sure whether thats truly an act of kindness or just a convenient excuse for underwhelming functionality.

Apple, on the other hand, says it’s collecting data on other features instead. During Tuesday’s event, the company announced an Apple Hearing Study , a Women’s Health Study , and the Apple Heart & Movement Study. While these areas of study are important when it comes to overall health, a sleep study should also be part of the mixespecially since the Apple Watch already packs the sensors needed to track basic sleep metrics, and the iPhone’s Health app comes with a Sleep Analysis feature.

If you’re still set on buying the Apple Watch Series 5, there are third-party apps that track sleep. But since they’re not native to the device, the analytics don’t factor in other metrics tracked by the watch. For a smartwatch that comes with a starting price of $399, it’d be ideal if it could paint a full picture of my overall health, sleep included, rather than just part of it.

Apple Watch Sleep tracking: What it does and how to use it

The balance of blood-oxygen saturation is vital to health.

Low blood oxygen levels could indicate a condition called Hypoxemia. Most people dont have the chronic health conditions that require them to monitor their blood oxygen level, but if you do, then having an SpO2 sensor will be very helpful.

A normal SpO2 reading is typically between 95 and 100 percent.

Both the Apple Watch and the latest Fitbit smartwatches offer SPO2 sensors to detect blood-oxygen saturation. Both allow on-demand readings of your blood oxygen, but Apple’s solution is more flexible.

The new Apple Watch can take a blood O2 reading in just 15 seconds at any time of day, while Fitbit only measures your blood-oxygen levels while you sleep, and you have to remember to switch the clock face for it to take a reading unless you subscribe to Fitbit’s Premium service.

Fitbit users require a Premium subscription to then track trends over time in the Health Metrics dashboard within the Fitbit app.

Best Health Apps By Far

Autosleep and Healthwatch are simply incredible apps and a must for anyone interested in their health. I am a physician and a bit obsessed with data. Ive tried a dozen health tracking devices and even more apps and these two, by far, are the most insightful and well designed apps for the iPhone and Apple Watch. Ive spent hours over the last couple months reviewing the various trends and graphical analytics these apps offer for immediate and long term feedback on my sleep hygiene and heart health. My only wish is that the developer make more apps to track other aspects of health and wellness . These two apps pack so much analysis into a concise and easy to read manner, I wish the other wellness aspects that I track could offer as much insight. While those would require ground-up brand new apps, one thing which could possibly be incorporated into the HeartWatch app would be the ECG data. Even though its only one lead, tracking QTc and PR intervals should be doable. Just a thought for future iterations. Anyway, these apps are an incredible deal and offer way more for far less than anything else Ive found on the App Store. Keep up the good work.

Compatibility: Apple Is Iphone Only

Fitbit is compatible with iOS and Android. You dont have to have a smartphone for Fitbit to work, as you can sync with the excellent desktop Fitbit Dashboard, but its good to have more syncing opportunities and be able to see some fancy stats and graphs on the go.

While only the Versa 3 and Sense smartwatches can run apps themselves, a Fitbit wristband can be integrated with apps such as MapMyRun, MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper, Endomondo, Strava and more.

For obvious reasons Apple Watch is compatible with iOS devices only, so the iPhone is the only smartphone that will work with it, and you really need one for it to make sense.

Apple Watch can run other fitness apps, such as Nike+Run Club, Runtastic Pro, Pocket Yoga, Map My Run, Endomondo, and Cyclemeter GPS. New apps will be released in the future so the Watch should get better functionality as developers work out new features.

How To Track Your Sleep On Apple Watch

If youre having trouble sleeping, you may want to monitor your sleep cycle. An Apple Watch makes it easy with its own built-in sleep tracker and support for third-party apps.

Yawwwwn. Waking up feeling tired? Think you’re not getting enough sleep, or even the best kind of sleep? You could turn to your iPhone for help, but it may be better to track your sleep patterns. One way to do that is with a sleep tracker app on your Apple Watch.

In the past, you had to use a third-party app to monitor and record your sleep, but Apple introduced its own integrated sleep tracker with watchOS 7. The built-in tracker gets the job done, but it doesnt have all the bells and whistles needed to fully track and record every aspect of your sleep. For that reason, you might still want to try a third-party sleep-tracking app to get a more complete picture of your sleep patterns.

Worried about battery power? Don’t be. Your Apple Watch won’t run out of battery in the middle of the night if you give it a power boost before bed. Connect it to the charger for an hour or two before sleep, and it should last the entire night.

These apps aren’t always 100 percent accurate. A more comprehensive test would involve your doctor and a full sleep study where you would be hooked up to monitors. However, these sleep trackers at least offer a good place to start.
