Edit Your Sleep Schedule
Tap Open Sleep Options in Health to open the Health app, where you can turn on the switch for Sleep Schedule. Tap the Edit link under Full Schedule and set your usual times for going to sleep and waking up. You can also set different times for different days, such as one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.
Under Additional Details, tap the entry for Sleep Goal and set the number of hours and minutes that you hope to sleep. Tap the entry for Wind Down to select the amount of time for winding down before bed. Tap the entry for Wind Down Shortcuts to set up any shortcuts youd like to apply during Wind Down. Finally, tap the entry for Options to confirm the options you set in the Sleep app and to set up a few more.
What Do I Use
Despite all of the new entrants into the sleep tracking Apple Watch industry, I still find AutoSleep to be the most powerful option, but thats not to say its perfect. AutoSleep offers you a lot of data, and you can pick and choose whether to read too much into it.
Additionally, I pair the AutoSleep data with the features introduced with watchOS 7 and iOS 14. You can still use features such as Wind Down and Sleep Mode, and track data using third-party sources such as AutoSleep.
NapBot is becoming a close second for me, and its getting better with each passing update. Both NapBot and AutoSleep, for instance, offer iOS 14 home screen widgets and Apple Watch complications, something that isnt possible with Apples Health data.
The key, regardless of which application you pick, is to make sure there is some sort of automatic sleep detection feature. This reduces friction and means you dont have to remember to manually start a sleep tracking session every night before bed. Instead, your Apple Watch can track your sleep in the background, without any interaction from you.
These apps also integrate with Apples Health app, which means you can get an overview of your sleep data alongside everything else in the Health app. The Health app is useful for tracking long-term trends and averages, but if you want detailed data, youll have to jump to your third-party app of choice.

- Red means theres a lot of room for improvement.
It even gives you a score based on your quality of sleep.
It has some fun features too!
You can track your mood when you wake up by selecting an emoji that closely relates to your feelings, like the sleepy emoji or the coffee emoji.
Auto sleep also pairs with the Breathe app on your Apple Watch.

Paid Membership: No But Offers In
Sleep++ is the most basic of the available sleep apps, but it’s free to download and has no hidden extra costs. You can choose to have your sleep tracked in auto mode or manual mode.
Auto mode will automatically track your sleep, using your movements or lack thereof to know when you’re in dreamland. If you use manual mode, you’ll have to tell the app when you’re going to sleep and when you wake up.
Press “Start Sleeping” and then “Stop Sleeping” on your Apple Watch or in the iPhone app.
You won’t get much data from this app, just one bar showing you how deep your sleep was. However, it’s totally free and a great place to start your sleep-tracking routine.
Apple Is Adding Sleep Tracking To Apple Watch But What About The Battery Life
As popular as the Apple Watch has been, it’s never had the battery life of some other personal tracking devices. This has limited its usefulness as a sleep tracker. But now that Apple is adding sleep, what does that say about the battery? We have some thoughts.
The Apple Watch and sleep tracking. They seem they should go together like oatmeal and peanut butter . But there’s always been a concern about battery life. The Apple Watch does not have a week-long battery life like some of its competitors, so the question of sleep tracking has gone hand in hand with the battery life question.
This limitation has generally been the reason Apple hasn’t included a sleep tracking app with the Watch — until now. At WWDC 2020, Apple’s Health Software Engineering manager, Vera Carr, gave an overview of the new sleep-related functions.
These features include Wind Down, a timing feature to help remind you to get ready for bed. It even includes shortcuts to meditation and music playing apps to help you drift off. The Watch is gaining a sleep mode which functions like Do Not Disturb with a dimmed screen. In the morning, it can wake you with an audible alarm or a silent one that taps on your wrist.
And here’s where we don’t think there’s been much battery life improvement. Carr said, “It also shows your battery level so you can remember to charge in the morning.” As she said this, an image of the watch was shown with a 45% capacity.

What About Battery Life
Before you start tracking your sleep with Apple Watch, youll need to make a plan for when youll charge your watch. There are two primary options here: before bed or after you wake up in the morning. One key change for me has been placing an extra Apple Watch charger at my desk rather than on my nightstand.
For me, its much easier to charge before bed every night. I wake up and workout first most mornings, so I have to make sure my Apple Watch has enough battery for workout tracking. If I put my Apple Watch on the charger at around 8 p.m., after Ive already reached my stand goal for that day, it usually has a full charge by the time I head to bed at 9:30 p.m. And when I wake up in the morning, I almost always have more than 90% battery left more than enough to make it through the day.
Plus, on the days when I need a mid-day recharge, having the extra Apple Watch charger on my desk makes that a lot easier.
This works perfectly for me, but your routine is probably different than mine. The key is to come up with a plan that you can replicate every day. Whether thats charging in the morning or at night, or a combination of both, its a lot easier than you might think to change your Apple Watch charging habits.
Of course, there is also always the option of repurposing an old Apple Watch as your dedicated sleep watch. 9to5Macs Zac Hall previously explained how to do that. You could also pick up a used or refurbished older Apple Watch model to do this.
Isnt It Annoying Wearing A Watch To Bed
Not really. If the band is comfortable, I havent had a problem. Some bands can catch on sheets or skin, so your mileage may vary.
If you wear your watch to bed, be sure to at the very least set it to theater mode. I learned how annoying the light could be at night. I also set it to Airplane mode and Do Not Disturb to get notifications and interruptions. It also extends battery life. If my watch is 100% before bed, Im still at 95% in the morning, even with a restless night.

Change Or Turn Off Your Next Wake
Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
Tap your current bedtime.
To set a new wake-up time, tap the wake-up time, turn the Digital Crown to set a new time, then tap Set.
If you dont want your Apple Watch to wake you in the morning, turn off Alarm.
The changes apply only to your next wake-up alarm, after which your normal schedule resumes.
Note: You can also turn off the next wake-up alarm in the Alarms app . Just tap the alarm that appears under Sleep | Wake up, then tap Skip for Tonight.
Keep Up With Your Battery
Speaking of battery, this is likely one of user’s biggest concerns. Apple doesn’t have a way to magically extend your watch’s battery life but it does try to help you manage it.
When it is almost time for bed, if your battery life is less than 30 percent, your phone will notify you that you need to charge. And when your watch is charging, your phone will get an alert letting you know when it hits a full charge so you can go grab it.
Apple Watch does charge quick and in our time testing, we haven’t had much issue keeping the watch juiced up even on a beta. We top it off while we are in the shower and maybe a few minutes in the morning before work and it makes it through the day and night.

Set Up Sleep On Apple Watch
Open the Sleep app on your watch . Tap the schedule, then select the Wake Up time if you wish to change it. Turn on an alarm if you need one to wake you up at the right time. Tap the time for Bedtime if you want to change that as well.
Return to the main screen and tap Full Schedule if you wish to turn off your Sleep Schedule for any specific nights or all nights. Here, you can also add a schedule and change your sleep goal or Wind Down time. Then just wear your watch to bed.
Apple Watch 5 Will Finally Feature Sleep Tracking
Rumors surrounding Apple Watch sleep-tracking have been circulating since , but previous reports suggested the feature wouldn’t make its way into the wearables until 2020. Now, a new report reveals Apple will introduce sleep-monitoring for the new Apple Watch Series 5 at its keynote event on September 10.
According to 9to5Mac, it learned from sources inside Apple that sleep-tracking functionality won’t require special hardware to work. Rather, the feature’s foundation will be in watchOS 6 software , meaning older Apple Watch models should be able to support sleep-tracking if this report is correct.
The feature, called ‘Time in Bed tracking,’ will allow users to track their sleep cycles if they wear an Apple Watch to bed. Data about quality of sleep will become available in the Health app, as well as in a new Sleep app for the Apple Watch.
Though the Apple Watch has excelled at health and fitness monitoring, it hasn’t supported a built-in app for logging your sleep, which is an important factor when it comes to evaluating your overall health. Fitbit, Garmin and Samsung all offer native sleep-tracking, whereas Apple’s wearable only supports sleep logging via third-party apps.
A notable issue with sleep-tracking for the Apple Watch is that many users choose to charge their wearable overnight. 9to5Mac said Apple took this into consideration and developed a feature that will remind users to charge their Watch beforehand so its battery will last through the night.

Turn On Do Not Disturb Mode
As you are getting ready for bed, enable the Do Not Disturb mode to silence all notifications to help you sleep more soundly.
This feature ensures that all phone calls, text messages, emails, and social media alerts stay on your phone and dont ping your wrist.
However, you can still control who can reach you unconditionally.

Apple, on the other hand, says it’s collecting data on other features instead. During Tuesday’s event, the company announced an Apple Hearing Study , a Women’s Health Study , and the Apple Heart & Movement Study. While these areas of study are important when it comes to overall health, a sleep study should also be part of the mixespecially since the Apple Watch already packs the sensors needed to track basic sleep metrics, and the iPhone’s Health app comes with a Sleep Analysis feature.
If you’re still set on buying the Apple Watch Series 5, there are third-party apps that track sleep. But since they’re not native to the device, the analytics don’t factor in other metrics tracked by the watch. For a smartwatch that comes with a starting price of $399, it’d be ideal if it could paint a full picture of my overall health, sleep included, rather than just part of it.

This Is All Nothing New
Sleep tracking on this level is nothing new for the Apple Watch. I’ve been tracking my sleep every night since November, when I bought my Apple Watch Series 4 refurb. I haven’t used an Apple-issued app, but I have been using AutoSleep, a four dollar app on the App Store.
AutoSleep works great. It has a Watch app that you set and forget. The app on the watch does the sleep tracking and reports back to a far more comprehensive app on the iPhone. AutoSleep on the iPhone captures a ton of metrics, and provides you with lots of ways of slicing and dicing the data.
I, personally, look at the total sleep time after I’ve had coffee in the morning. If I’ve had enough sleep , I don’t take a nap during the day. But if I got less than four hours of sleep overnight, I try to allocate time for a power nap sometime in the middle of the day.

The Apple Watch 5 has plenty of potential when it comes to tracking your movement or logging your runs and walks. With each iteration, Apple adds more functionalities to this smartwatch. And now, sleep tracking is one of the features to join the herd.
Though you could track your sleep patterns before, Apple hasnt integrated these functions by default until watchOS7 and iOS 14. Although this feature does come in handy, it’s not impressive, at least for now.
