How Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Works

How to track your sleep with your Apple Watch Apple Support

Apple’s sleep tracking integrates with the existing Bedtime feature on the iPhone’s Clock app , so you turn it on and create a schedule.

Before your allocated bedtime you’ll be ‘prepared’ for sleep with a wind-down time while your Apple Watch becomes dimmed and locked – your Watch is now in ‘Sleep Mode’.

Do Not Disturb is automatically turned on but you can disable this either when you set up Sleep or afterwards.

You can also choose whether or not to have charging reminders – the watch will warn you within an hour of bedtime if you have less than 30 percent charge.

If you have a Series 4 or 5 you’ll almost certainly be OK to go through the night if you charged for a bit during the day at some point. With Series 3, you will need to fully charge in the day to last the night.

In Sleep Mode, you need to turn the digital crown to unlock the watch just as you do when you step out of water after swimming. We actually find this a bit irritating when we need to get up in the night and use the torch, for example.

You can disable Sleep Mode if you want, but this won’t track sleep. You can also opt out of sleep tracking entirely, even if you have Sleep Mode enabled.

You can access Sleep options and tracking in various places, which is somewhat confusing at first but does make sense because it ties several things together. So:

It’s About The Wind Down Not A Sleep Score

I tried Apple’s Bedtime feature on iOS way back in 2016, which was a surprisingly helpful tool to remind me to stick to a good bedtime routine. The iPhone feature lets you set your bedtime and morning alarm times and then tracks whether you use your phone during the downtime. Even then, I saw it as something that would eventually make sense on the Apple Watch.

Wind Down is an expansion of that feature, and it also connects to helpful apps that could be part of that routine. My 11-year-old son already does things to wind down each night, including meditation, and I should learn from him. That’s what Apple’s feature aims to help with.

Apple sees the wind down and the bedtime routine as an important part of sleep quality.

“Many sleep apps show information about REM cycles and other data like that,” Lynch says. “And we’ve looked a lot into that.”

But Apple’s research has found something else is more important: the amount of time you sleep. “Even in our studies, we had people wear EEGs on their heads, so we got insight into the electrical activity of their brain, in addition to what we’re able to sense on the wrist with Apple Watch,” Lynch says. “And we’ve learned a lot about how the main thing here is really about duration.”

Third-party apps can show deeper estimated sleep analysis, but Apple believes “that it can be overwhelming and stressful to look at that data,” Lynch says.

Duration and schedule, but deeper estimated analysis isn’t available yet.

Apple Watch Sleep tracking: What it does and how to use it

Unlike AutoSleep, Sleep Watch uses more of a dashboard concept. I find its too much data that isnt as useful at first glance. The ring concept is easier to read and determine how you did.

Sleep Watch excels, though, in tracking what else is going on in your life that may impact sleep. Each morning it asks you how well-rested you are. It then takes that data along with your sleep patterns to make suggestions.

For example, it told me I slept very well one night. I looked at my responses and my Apple Health app and noticed that a long run clearly made a difference. I didnt go for speed I just went for distance. It seems like when I try to run hard, it causes me more soreness, and I wake up. I also cross-referenced what I ate that day, and it seems protein at night helps me sleep better.

Sleep Watch Premium gives you a sleep score and lets you compare it to other people. I didnt find much value in that. Im always in the low percentile for sleep quality, so I dont need reminders.

Isnt It Annoying Wearing A Watch To Bed

Not really. If the band is comfortable, I havent had a problem. Some bands can catch on sheets or skin, so your mileage may vary.

If you wear your watch to bed, be sure to at the very least set it to theater mode. I learned how annoying the light could be at night. I also set it to Airplane mode and Do Not Disturb to get notifications and interruptions. It also extends battery life. If my watch is 100% before bed, Im still at 95% in the morning, even with a restless night.

Get More Out Of Your Apple Watch Sleep Tracking

Dont settle for limited info. Many Apple Watch owners use third-party apps to supplement the Sleep app and collect more details.

  • The widely popular app Autosleep integrates seamlessly with and even offers a similar experience to Apples activity rings. Autosleep tracks the duration of your sleep and the quality and lets you know your readiness or how prepared you are for the day based on your rest.
  • Another highly-rated option, Sleep++ provides data-driven sleep tracking that lets you know how many times a night you entered deep sleep.
  • Pillow offers in-depth sleep analysis charts and a smart alarm clock function that will wake you up at the optimal time for maximum refreshment.

What Is Apple Watch Sleep Tracking

Apple Watch Sleep Tracking: How it actually works // Setup, Tested, Details, Comparisons

Sleep tracking on a smartwatch isnt new and Apple isnt trying to reinvent the wheel just yet. Samsung, Garmin, Fitbit, and others have been offering the ability to automatically track your time in bed and offer a range of different metrics and insights related to sleep.

To put it simply, sleep tracking helps you understand not only how you sleep but also identify trends or factors that could be contributing to poor sleep quality for a single night or in general. Some of these insights can be viewed on the Apple Watch in the dedicated Sleep app, but most are found in a sleep subsection of the iOS Health app.

As already mentioned, there are a bunch of third-party Apple Watch sleep apps, which you will still see recommended to you in Apples Sleep app. This is the first time Apple has created something that uses both its smartwatch and iPhone to smarten up that bedtime experience.

We fully anticipate that Apples sleep tracking app will continue to evolve to enhance the metrics it records and the insights it will offer over the coming months and years.

How Does It Work

In direct comparison to the likes of Fitbit, Withings and other wearables, Apples sleep tracking is undeniably basic.

Theres no sleep stage tracking of REM, deep and light cycles, nor is there in-depth analysis of how long it took you to drop off. Why? Because Apple says that stuff isnt really directly improvable by users, thus not useful to know and it has a point.

The Apple Watch therefore focuses on the tracking of sleep duration, and behaviors you can control for a better night’s sleep. That included consistent bedtime and wake ups, and ironically, spending less time with your devices.

It uses the motion sensors and accelerometer to monitor your rest, and while it does use the heart rate sensor to track blood oxygen and bpm, this isnt factored into the assessment of your sleep.

That may seem insanely retro but it works. Were continually comparing and testing the best sleep trackers, and the Apple Watch is up there with the most accurate devices in terms of tracking sleep duration.

Show Off Your Watch Faces

No, watchOS 7 didnt bring a watch face store or open the ability for third-party developers to make faces. But the Apple Watch has given users and developers more customization through complications forever. And once you create a face you love, you can easily share it with others. You simply long-press on a watch face as if youre going to customize it, then tap the little share icon. If you choose to iMessage it to someone, it will send a file of the face.

Developers can offer more than one complication per app, thanks to watchOS 7. We havent had the opportunity to try this, but for a weather app, it could mean having multiple temperatures or data sets from a city appear on the same face. As with integrations with Wind Down, were excited to see how this is implemented in the fall.

To get the train rolling with watch face sharing, Apple will highlight its favorites in the App Store, but youll also be able to share watch faces on the web.

Not everyone gets the six to eight hours of sleep they need at night. An afternoon nap can help, but if you use your Apple Watch to track your health, fitness, activity, and sleep, naps can bring problems.

So, lets look at the shambles that is nap tracking with an Apple Watch.

How To Track Your Sleep With An Apple Watch

How To Track Your Sleep On Apple Watch

Do you want to know how to track your sleep with an Apple Watch? With WatchOS 7 for Apple Watch Series 3 devices and later, its easy to track your sleep using the in-built sleep-tracking feature. If youre rocking an older Apple Watch, theres no need to worry there are a few sleep-tracking workarounds involving apps and using your iPhone. However, none are ideal, and well also fill you in on the one big drawback that may change your mind about using the Apple Watch to track sleep at all.

Apple Watch Sleep App

It would be remiss not to start this guide by mentioning the built-in Apple Watch sleep tracking feature, which debuted with watchOS 7.

It’s far more simplistic than any of the other apps on this list, so if you’re used to in-depth data on your sleep cycles, deep sleep or other biometric data, you might be a little underwhelmed.

However, it combines with the iPhone to put a focus on your sleep consistency and sleep hygiene. It’s about setting bedtime and wake ups which can build better sleep, and the Apple Watch will also keep tabs on sleep duration and heart rate during sleep.

We’ve tested against the Fitbit Sense and Withings Sleep Analyzer and found it to be one of the most accurate trackers in terms of sleep duration. It’s not just tracking the time in bed, but how long you actually slept between tossing and turning something that many systems regularly over-estimate.

You don’t get much in terms of stats to review. You can see your average time in bed, average sleep and the duration of each sleep. This is visible both on the Apple Watch and the Health app.

This is our favorite of the bunch, as it stands. As the name suggests, AutoSleep’s key feature is that it works automatically, unlike some sleep tracker apps that require you to tell them when you’re getting into bed.

Users of Apple Watch will feel immediately at home, and Autosleep apes the Activity Rings you’ll find on your smartwatch.

How To Set Up Sleep Tracking On Apple Watch

1. Ensure your Apple Watch is on watchOS 7 or later and your iPhone is running iOS 14 or later.

2. In the Health app on your iPhone, set up Sleep. You can also go through this process on the Apple Watch itself in the Sleep app.

3. Firstly, choose the duration of sleep – this is a Sleep goal but it isn’t tracked in the iPhone Activity app like your rings . We’ve chosen eight hours.

4. Next, you set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake up. There are actually a bunch of options here, so go through them carefully. Do you need to set it for every day, or just weekdays.

5. You’ll need to set a relaxation time before you go to bed – you can also choose to link this to a Siri Shortcut to do other automation such as turning off a light at home, for example. Wind Down can also be linked to a music playlist, for example.

6. You can decide whether or not to set an alarm and how you want it to sound. Note that this won’t replace your existing alarms on Apple Watch .

Your alarm will sound on your iPhone if you don’t have your Apple Watch on and on your Watch if you do have it on. You can fully configure the alarm sound as well. If your Watch is set to silent, it will just vibrate.

7. You can see your sleep patterns in the Health app on iPhone – view by week or month. You can definitely see the gaps in my sleep here. As you can see, a small child is not conducive to meeting your sleep goal!

Battery Life Works For Now But Longer Battery Would Make Sense

Existing Apple Watches will need at least 30% battery life on a charge before tracking sleep at night. If the battery level’s lower, the watch will request a charge-up. The Apple Watch 5‘s battery lasts about 18 hours, and you can charge the battery to 80% in about 1.5 hours and 100% in 2.5 hours. Apple’s sleep tracking dims the display and reduces background activity, showing a basic watch face and the date or alarm if a button is pressed.

If you’re used to charging the Apple Watch every night, wearing the watch to bed may seem like a disruption. “That does introduce new charging behavior for people where before they would just charge overnight,” Lynch acknowledges, leaving wearers to decide whether to top off in the morning, charge a bit more at night, or just skip sleep tracking.

It would make a lot of sense to just find a way to improve the Apple Watch battery life — maybe by expanding the battery capacity in the next modelsor removing Force Touch, which senses pressure to do things like change the watch face. Apple’s new app guidelines encourage developers to move away from Force Touch, and include these features in the UI or through a long press on WatchOS 7. Apple removed pressure-sensitive 3D Touch from the iPhone 11 Pro and gained considerable battery life in return. Could the same happen for the Apple Watch this fall and help sleep tracking be less awkward, too?
