If you are looking to wear your Apple Watch overnight, here are some tips to keep you safe and help you sleep better.

Wear a comfortable strap. This is essential to ensure that you dont get uncomfortable as you sleep, which can, in itself, wake you up. The strap that comes with your Apple Watch can be adjusted accordingly. You can also use a different strap, but must be flexible, breathable, and made from materials like rubber or nylon.

Wear comfortably, but not too tight. If it loosens, it wont track your data, and if it is too tight, it may become uncomfortable.

Sleeping on your back while wearing an Apple Watch leaves your wrists free. If you sleep on your side or your stomach, you might end up using your arms to support your weight. This will press your watch into your wrists, causing pain or discomfort.

Optimize your home screen for sleep by choosing from the 10 available faces offered by Apple. A Modular face is ideal if you dont want to disrupt your sleep. Just configure it with time and alarm, if need be. You dont want it lighting up as you sleep, causing a distraction.

Enable Theatre Mode, which is designed to prevent the screen from activating when you move your wrist. It will turn off the screen and wont reactivate unless engaged.

Once in the app, they can set up their preferred bedtime and wake-up time, with the option of setting an alarm for the latter. Tapping ‘Full Schedule’ then allows users to add a new sleep schedule or change an existing one by setting a sleep goal for the desired amount of sleep and setting the amount of ‘Wind Down’ time in which the Apple Watch goes into sleep mode by turning off its display and enabling Do Not Disturb mode. Schedules can be set for particular days and adjusted when required. Sleep history can be viewed by scrolling down from the home screen of the app, with the previous night’s sleep shown and an average over the past 14 days.

There are a number of settings that can be adjusted to do with sleep tracking on the iPhone, including whether or not the time is shown when the Apple Watch is in sleep mode, whether and when charging reminders should be given to ensure the Watch is adequately for sleep tracking, and whether to wake up to an alarm or haptic taps. These and more can be accessed via the Settings app of the Apple Watch. There is also a version of the Sleep app for the iPhone to which a user’s sleep data can be synced, as well as a Night Shift feature that reduces blue light.

Apples Wind Down Is Better Than Its Sleep Tracking

Though Im not thrilled with the sleep tracking functionality, Apple did a nice job with a related set of watchOS 7 and iOS 14 features called Wind Down. Rather than just telling you how much you slept, Wind Down provides a holistic approach to weaning you off your phone at night, softly encouraging you to settle down before a full Do Not Disturb regime kicks in.

If you prefer to use apps to relax, you can create iOS shortcuts specific to settling down, such as turning on a music playlist or podcast, opening an app for reading or journaling, or accessing apps for yoga and meditation. These shortcuts will appear on the iPhones Lock Screen so youre reminded to use them, and you can also initiate a watchOS Wind Down sleep mode that begins however many minutes you prefer before your scheduled bedtime.

These kinds of features may seem simple to implement, but theyre actually thoughtful, OS-level integrations that show how sleep tracking functionality could become part of a larger sleep management experience for some users. I might want to keep using Wind Down even in the absence of sleep tracking.

Data Tracking With Sleep++

Sleep++ analyzes your sleeping pattern, shows you the number of hours you were in bed, and gives you a percentage measuring how restless you were during the night. You can also view your sleep information on the Sleep++ iPhone app and opt to sync the data to the Health app.

Wearable Battery Life Remains The Biggest Problem

Ever since the first Apple Watch arrived in 2015, Apple has stuck to the same battery life guarantee: 18 hours of run time between charges. The actual number can be much lower if you use the watch to make long phone calls, constantly download data, or track extended runs or workouts. But on the other hand, the latest Apple Watches quietly exceed the 18-hour promise if you disable or only lightly use their new features. Regardless, Apples guideline was simple: Put the watch on your wrist each morning, dont worry about battery life all day, then place it on a charger each night, and repeat ad infinitum.

Given that the company has had five years to prepare for the addition of sleep tracking which obviously requires users to wear their Watch overnight Apple could have boosted battery life any year with a bigger housing or more power-efficient parts to enable multiday run times. Some competitors have made those choices, relying heavily on longer run times to differentiate their devices. Apple instead decided to market its way around design compromises, recently floating the idea that users should recharge their Watches during morning showers.

Battery Life Works For Now But Longer Battery Would Make Sense

Existing Apple Watches will need at least 30% battery life on a charge before tracking sleep at night. If the battery level’s lower, the watch will request a charge-up. The Apple Watch 5‘s battery lasts about 18 hours, and you can charge the battery to 80% in about 1.5 hours and 100% in 2.5 hours. Apple’s sleep tracking dims the display and reduces background activity, showing a basic watch face and the date or alarm if a button is pressed.

If you’re used to charging the Apple Watch every night, wearing the watch to bed may seem like a disruption. “That does introduce new charging behavior for people where before they would just charge overnight,” Lynch acknowledges, leaving wearers to decide whether to top off in the morning, charge a bit more at night, or just skip sleep tracking.

It would make a lot of sense to just find a way to improve the Apple Watch battery life — maybe by expanding the battery capacity in the next modelsor removing Force Touch, which senses pressure to do things like change the watch face. Apple’s new app guidelines encourage developers to move away from Force Touch, and include these features in the UI or through a long press on WatchOS 7. Apple removed pressure-sensitive 3D Touch from the iPhone 11 Pro and gained considerable battery life in return. Could the same happen for the Apple Watch this fall and help sleep tracking be less awkward, too?

What Data Does The Apple Watch Sleep Tracking App Collect

On the watch, you can see your sleep schedule, most recent data and a summary of your sleep consistency over the past 14 days.

You can see more data on the Apple Health iOS app. When you open it up and head for the Sleep section, you can also see the average time spent in bed and time spent asleep over a month. You can also see a series of highlights that range from average sleep over seven days as well as heart rate during sleep.

The importance of seeing that heart rate information during this time is that it can give you a sense of how your body recovers from the day and can also be a sign of whether youre in a good state of health. Unlike AutoSleep, the data in the Pillow Automatic Sleep Tracker doesnt overload your sleepy eyes first thing in the morning. Instead, you see a circular graph that shows the duration and quality of your sleep.
