Where To See Your Readings
To see your specific sleep results, you log in to the Fitbit app on your iOS or Android device and sync your Fitbit. The app that tracks your sleep is the same one you use to see your steps. When you do, youll see a brief rundown of your results in the sleep tile.
You need to have slept at least three hours for Sleep Stages to work. It also doesnt work if you wear your tracker loose on your wrist or when its running low on battery power.
If you want to see your readings, tap on the sleep time number to go to the sleep dashboard. From there, you can see each stage of sleep represented in a graph form that breaks down how much time you spent in each sleep stage and how close you were to your overall sleep goal for the day.
Scroll down to see your sleep results for the day and your average amount of sleep for the week. Tap on any specific sleep section to bring up an hour-by-hour explanation of how you slept and which sleep stage you were in at a given time. The 30-day average and benchmarks show how your sleep compares to other people your gender and age.

Fitbit Alta Hr Sleep Tracking: Not Quite Living The Dream
But thats enough about exercise, what about the more important business of sleep? The Alta HR is one of only three Fitbits to work with the Fitbit apps new Sleep Stages and Insights features. At the moment, these are more interesting than genuinely useful, but theres definitely some big potential.
Dont loads of other fitness trackers offer a sleep-tracking mode? Yes, but the reason why Fitbits is interesting, and also the reason why its only available on those three trackers, is because it uses heart-rate variability to more accurately pinpoint the exact stage of sleep youre in, rather than an accelerometer or standard heart-rate.
The upshot is that every night you get a lovely graph showing how you phased between REM, light or deep sleep, along with comparisons against your 30-day average and the norm for people in your age group. Considering the amount of data Fitbit holds about fitness and, increasingly, sleep, theres definitely potential for some handy shuteye insights.
Sadly, right now, the word is very much potential. So far, the Sleep Insights Ive received have been very generic comments for example, a regular wake-up time helps lock in a stable circadian rhythm or adding exercises like walking, running and swimming to your routine could help your sleep quality. Not exactly searing insight.

Should I Get A Charge 2 Or Alta Hr
This is a tough one. Both the Charge 2 and Alta HR offer activity tracking, smartphone notifications, and, now, heart rate monitoring, plus theyre the same price .
The main difference between the two devices is the multi-sport mode that lets you manually track workouts on your wrist that SmartTrack cant detect, like yoga, spin, or weightlifting. The Charge 2 can be put into multi-sport mode by pressing-and-holding the trackers side button, while the button-less Alta HR can not. Alta HR wearers will need to manually log the activity after they finish, and your heart rate data recorded during the activitys start and stop time is used to calculate calories burned. The tracker can store your data on-device for seven days.
SmartTrack exercise detection automatically recognizes continuous, high-movement activities like walking, running, outdoor biking, elliptical, and high-movement workouts like tennis and dance classes.
Those who rely on real-time stats during their workout will benefit from the Charge 2s bigger screen. If running or biking, youll see mileage in big, bold numbers. For weight training, youll see heart rate. The larger display may also be easier to use. The Charge 2s side button is much more straightforward than the Altas sometimes cumbersome, unresponsive touchscreen.
What It’s Missing Versus The Charge 2
The Alta HR and Charge 2 are priced the same. They both have heart-rate sensors, can both track all-day fitness, and can both display basic notifications. So what’s the difference?
The Charge 2 has a built-in stopwatch and multiple workout profiles — running, biking, Zumba, intervals and more — for tracking individual exercises, while the Alta HR relies on automatic workout tracking. The automatic feature, which is also on the Charge 2 and Blaze, works most of the time but can occasionally miss or wrongly classify a workout, although this can later be fixed in the Fitbit app.

The Alta HR also doesn’t include an altimeter and won’t measure how many flights of stairs you climb each day, nor does it have the guided breathing sessions from the Charge 2. But these aren’t huge trade-offs.
If you care strongly enough about these features, get the Charge 2. But for most people, the better battery life and smaller size of the Alta HR will be more useful.

Fitbit Alta Hr Review: Design

The Fitbit Alta HR features an almost identical design to the original Alta, meaning it retains its lovely slim and stylish build. The main difference in the new device is the addition of the PurePulse optical heart-rate monitor on its underside, along with a change in clasp from the two-pin mechanism to a slim, colour-matched buckle for a more secure fit.
Fitbit has managed to make the PurePulse monitor smaller compared to the Charge 2, Surge and Blaze trackers, which in turn means the Alta HR is the same size as the original Alta. The HR therefore measures just 15mm wide, making it very unobtrusive compared to its larger siblings. Sadly it isn’t waterproof like the similar-sized Flex 2.
Like the original, the Alta HR has a lovely chamfered metal frame with a 1.4-inch OLED display on top. The display is sharp enough in appearance and responsive to touch-based controls most of the time, allowing for easy progress checking without opening the accompanying Fitbit app. There are occasions where you have to tap a little harder, but overall it’s a good display – just not an exceptional one in bright conditions.

I think thats partly because were all different, and our sleep will vary from one night to the next naturally. So again, the importance of knowing how much sleep you need to be at your best cant be understated.
Once you know how much total sleep you need to feel good, you can enter that as your sleep goal. Then hopefully the sleep stages will fall into the average range in the long-term, helping you feel good about your sleep pattern and motivated to stick to a good sleep schedule.

How To Make Fitbit Track Sleeping Work
Surge/Charge HR/Force and Charge
Surge helps track sleep automatically. All you need to do is to wear your device to bed. You will be able to view your stats when the tracker syncs with your account.
After getting into bed, tap you Flex for about 2 seconds. The tracker will vibrate and display 2 slowly dimming lights as an indicator for sleep mode. Goal progress is not displayed while the device is in this mode.
After you wake up, tap your Flex rapidly for about 2 seconds. The device will exit sleep mode. When you do this, the Flex will flash and vibrate 3 times and then display a spinning light pattern. You can view your stats after Flex has synced with your Fitbit account.
To activate sleep tracking, hold the button on the tracker for several seconds. You will notice the stopwatch begin to count or the icons start to blink. This is an indication that the device is in sleep mode. After you wake up, hold the trackers button for about 2 seconds to exit sleep mode.
Quickly Resume Gps Tracking
If, for whatever reason, your run outdoors has been interrupted, there is an easy way to get tracking working again without tinkering with the Blaze. Make sure youve got the location services settings for the Fitbit app set to Always and when you track through Fitbits MobileRun mode, itll automatically resume tracking.

Setting A Sleep Schedule And Reminders To Stick To It
One of the things I really liked during the month is the option to set a sleep goal / schedule and then get reminders to stick to it.
In the App settings, you can input your target sleep schedule. Since Im a bit of a night owl, I went with bedtime at 12:30 a.m. and wake up at 8:30 a.m.
You can limit the days for your schedule if you like, but I know I personally benefit from a regular 7 day a week pattern.
Following that, you can ask for a reminder to help you wind down for sleep, which I set an hour before at 11:30 p.m.
Every night I then received both a notification on my phone and a vibrating reminder on my wrist to encourage me to stick to that bedtime. And in theory, start winding down by putting aside any late night work, and reading a book or relaxing rather than watching the next episode of my favorite TV series.
I found this a very helpful tool, and one which I can see actually benefiting people. And to help motivate you even more, if you manage to hit your target youll get a green star on the App the next morning.

First Tests Basic Accuracy
The sleep stage breakdown is largely possible because of the ability to combine data from both the movement and constant heart rate sensors. So to trust the sleep data, it would be helpful if the movement and heart rate appear accurate during the daytime too.
Where heart rate is concerned, the resting heart rate appears very accurate. I tested it against my pulse and stopwatch many times during the month, and it was pretty much always spot on.
When it came to heavy exercise, however, it was a whole other story. The Alta really struggles to keep up when Im at the gym possibly because of the constant wrist bending when lifting weights and rowing, which Fitbit themselves admit can cause problems.
But during the night, that shouldnt be an issue. So Im reasonably satisfied that when Im not moving, the heart rate reading can be trusted .
As for less vigorous movement, again it seems pretty good. It counts my steps well during the day, and reacts automatically to exercise such as walking or cycling. And importantly, when I get up in the night to use the toilet or get a drink, it hasnt missed it once .
An important point here is that this is the kind of initial testing the average person might do with a new device. And if a device passes these tests, its more likely the owner will trust the more complex data like sleep stages.
Fitbit Alta Hr Verdict
Came straight to the conclusion? Heres the short version: the Alta HR is, for casual exercisers, one of the best and most motivational health-trackers around. The heart-rate tracking adds some genuinely insightful meat to your stats, and it has an almost uncanny ability to tune into the type of exercise youre doing. The week-long battery life is also a big bonus.
Sadly, the Alta HR notches up a few too many minors to get full marks: its not water-resistant, the screen is unresponsive and hard to read in sunlight, and its missing a few handy features that are found in other Fitbits like guided breathing and an altimeter. The sleep-tracking features are also more about promise than real insight right now. Its a slight shame, because it feels like Fitbit could have made a five star tracker if it didnt have one eye on balancing out the rest of its range.
But unless youre a swimmer or multi-sporter who likes to get lots of live data from your watch during exercise, its the best one its made so far.

Through Fitbit SmartTrack, workouts are automatically detected, including walking, running, cycling and even swimming.
The shortest amount of time you can set this for is 10 minutes, but, don’t worry, any exercise you do in those first few minutes will still be accounted for.
However, if you find auto-tracking isn’t working quite right, even once you’ve adjusted the time, you can turn it off for each exercise individually.
Fitbit Alta Battery Life
I did take it off at night, which may have contributed to the extra battery life, but even a five-day stretch off one charge is a huge win. The convenience of putting a wearable on and then forgetting about it is a key factor in fitness trackers, especially for novices like me. If I had to charge the tracker like I charged my phone, it never would make it back onto my wrist. Conversely, if you are a vigilant user who never wants to take their Fitbit off, then the long battery life and short time to get to a full charge has an even bigger appeal.
