While youre asleep each night, your body typically goes through several sleep cycles that last on average 90 minutes. In each cycle you alternate between two types of sleep:

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is Fitbit’s more budget-friendly offering amongst its wide selection of trackers and smartwatches. As one of the best sleep trackers, it stands out thanks to being so lightweight and comfortable to wear and of course being able to track your sleeping patterns effectively too.

It’s a little basic in places, lacking GPS and Fitbit Pay support. Also, we’re not huge fans of its tiny 1.4-inch OLED display but as a simple way to track the basics and help you monitor your stress levels too, it’s refreshingly straightforward. That’s further helped by its 10-day battery life which means you won’t have to think too hard about maintaining it either.

While the best Fitbit for everyone remains the now-ageing Fitbit Versa 3 if you can stretch that far or the Fitbit Charge 4, the Fitbit Inspire 2 is still a good bet if money is tight or you simply don’t want to invest in anything too feature-rich. Especially if you find a cheap Fitbit deal on it.

First Tests Basic Accuracy

The sleep stage breakdown is largely possible because of the ability to combine data from both the movement and constant heart rate sensors. So to trust the sleep data, it would be helpful if the movement and heart rate appear accurate during the daytime too.

Where heart rate is concerned, the resting heart rate appears very accurate. I tested it against my pulse and stopwatch many times during the month, and it was pretty much always spot on.

When it came to heavy exercise, however, it was a whole other story. The Alta really struggles to keep up when Im at the gym possibly because of the constant wrist bending when lifting weights and rowing, which Fitbit themselves admit can cause problems.

But during the night, that shouldnt be an issue. So Im reasonably satisfied that when Im not moving, the heart rate reading can be trusted .

As for less vigorous movement, again it seems pretty good. It counts my steps well during the day, and reacts automatically to exercise such as walking or cycling. And importantly, when I get up in the night to use the toilet or get a drink, it hasnt missed it once .

An important point here is that this is the kind of initial testing the average person might do with a new device. And if a device passes these tests, its more likely the owner will trust the more complex data like sleep stages.

Update The Fitbit App To The Latest Version

  • On your phone, open the App Store or Google Play Store and check if an update is available for the Fitbit app.
  • If there is an update, tap the Update button.
  • Once your device updates the Fitbit app, open it and go to your sleep report. Check if your sleep score is now visible.
  • If you still dont see it, restart your phone and check again.
  • If the sleep score still doesnt show up, restart your Fitbit. Do this via the Settings app on most Fitbits, then choose Reboot or Restart Device.
  • For smartwatches, press and hold the side button for 10 seconds until you see the Fitbit logo on the screen.
  • For trackers, place the Fitbit tracker on its charger and plug it in so its charging. Then, press the side button for 5 seconds or 8 seconds and release the button. Wait for a smile icon and for your tracker to vibrate to indicate it restarted.

    A Workaround If Only Part Of Your Sleep Has Been Recorded

    There is a workaround if you find your nightly sleep data is incomplete. It is a manual solution that is not ideal but may be better than doing nothing.

    You can edit the sleep log in the smartphone app by tapping the 3 dots in the upper right corner of each sleep session. This gives you the option to edit or delete the line.

    So lets say you have two separate sleep sessions for the night. You could delete the first one and edit the start of the second one to coincide with when you actually went to bed. Its a good way of merging two or more half-night segments.

    The sleep stage info will be a bit messed up but the length of the sleep session will be correct. You might even find that sleep stage info has been deleted entirely for that night.

  • Open the Fitbit app and tap the Today tab.
  • Tap your profile picture or icon, then scroll down to the Settings heading
  • Find it just after the wording to + Set Up a Device, and Shop Fitbit.
  • Choose Activity & Wellness, usually the first one on that list.
  • Select Sleep from the list of options.
  • Scroll to the bottom and choose Sleep Sensitivity.
  • Choose Sensitive instead of Normal.
  • If Sensitive is the current option, try Normal.
  • For older FitbitOS versions

  • Open the Fitbit app and choose the Accounts tab.
  • If you dont see accounts as a tab, choose the Today tab, and tap your profile icon or picture.
  • Tap Advanced Settings.

    For those on a budget though that simply want to keep an eye on the core basics to enriching your life, the Fitbit Inspire 2 still scratches that itch pretty well. If you can find it at a discounted price, it’s even more appealing.

    Where To See Your Readings

    To see your specific sleep results, you log in to the Fitbit app on your iOS or Android device and sync your Fitbit. The app that tracks your sleep is the same one you use to see your steps. When you do, youll see a brief rundown of your results in the sleep tile.

    You need to have slept at least three hours for Sleep Stages to work. It also doesnt work if you wear your tracker loose on your wrist or when its running low on battery power.

    If you want to see your readings, tap on the sleep time number to go to the sleep dashboard. From there, you can see each stage of sleep represented in a graph form that breaks down how much time you spent in each sleep stage and how close you were to your overall sleep goal for the day.

    Scroll down to see your sleep results for the day and your average amount of sleep for the week. Tap on any specific sleep section to bring up an hour-by-hour explanation of how you slept and which sleep stage you were in at a given time.     Understanding How Fitbit Detects Your Sleep

    Fitbit recognizes that you are sleeping only when your body is resting without any significant movements for an hour.

    Once your body passes that hour, your Fitbit begins gathering data about the quality of your sleep.

    For the first few hours , your Fitbit categorizes your sleep into three categories: restless, awake, or asleep.

    Once you pass the 3-hour threshold, it starts recording different types of sleepcalled your sleep stages. These stages include light, deep, and REM

    Your Fitbit app then uses those sleep stages to calculate a sleep score.

    Not all Fitbits support sleep staging

    Only Fitbits with heart-rate sensors can record your sleep stages.

    Additionally, you must wear these Fitbits on your wrist/arm and set them to wrist mode to collect your sleep stage information.

    However, both the Fitbit Charge HR and Fitbit Surge are exceptions and cant record sleep stages, even though they include heart rate sensors.

    If your Fitbit does not have a heart rate sensor or is the Charge HR and Surge, it can only record when you are asleep, restless, or awake.

    Rest Assured The Versa 2 Is A Great Sleep Tracker

    Fitbit wearables have long been capable of analyzing sleep metrics and turning that data into useful and actionable insights. Like other Fitbit trackers, the Versa 2 uses a combination of motion data and heart rate data to show you time spent in various sleep stages . In addition to its sensors, another reason that the Versa 2 makes such a good sleep tracker is its huge battery.     The Fitbit Inspire is a health and fitness tracker that is meant to be worn both day and night. Since it only needs to be charged a couple of times per week, you can wear it around the clock. It will track your steps, distance, active minutes, calories burned, exercise, female cycles, and your sleep.     Battery Life Takes A Hit

    Fitbit Charge 5: Turn Sleep Mode ON & OFF Manually or Automatically

    The only downside about having GPS on the Charge is that it’ll gobble up your battery a lot faster than on the Charge 3. Fitbit says the Charge 4 can last up to seven days on a charge, but I barely made it to day four before having to plug it in.

    I didn’t mind having to recharge after four days, but if you’re looking to get the most out of your battery life I would recommend turning off the GPS when it’s not in use. You’ll just have to remember to do this after your workout. You can do this from the exercise shortcuts on the Charge. Just swipe up from an activity that uses GPS, like running or cycling, and toggle it off.
