Welcome to the Fitbit Community! I hope you’re doing well! Thank you for clarifying the issue by responding ‘s question. Remember that you might not get sleep stages due to the following reasons:

          • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist . The band should feel secure but not too tight.
          • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app . For more information on automatic sleep tracking, see How do I track my sleep?
          • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
          • If your devices battery is critically low.

You can also try restarting your tracker by doing the following:

Plug the charging cable to your computer or UL certified wall adapter. Align the contacts of the tracker with the charging cable and plug it in making sure it snaps securely.Your tracker should start charging.Press the button for 10 to 12 seconds. You should see your tracker’s firmware version and you can now unplug your tracker.

A Workaround If Only Part Of Your Sleep Has Been Recorded

There is a workaround if you find your nightly sleep data is incomplete. It is a manual solution that is not ideal but may be better than doing nothing.

You can edit the sleep log in the smartphone app by tapping the 3 dots in the upper right corner of each sleep session. This gives you the option to edit or delete the line.

So lets say you have two separate sleep sessions for the night. You could delete the first one and edit the start of the second one to coincide with when you actually went to bed. Its a good way of merging two or more half-night segments.

The sleep stage info will be a bit messed up but the length of the sleep session will be correct. You might even find that sleep stage info has been deleted entirely for that night.

              What About Privacy And Security

New Fitbit Charge Wireless Activity Tracker + Sleep

Health apps and wearables collect a raft of data, which isnt regulated or legally protected in the same way that other health data is . And companies that are negligent with the data they collect dont seem to incur financial penalties. If youre intrigued by a device, but privacy questions give you pause, youre not alone. As part of our research, we reached out to the companies behind our picks and asked them to respond to a series of questions addressing what we think are important privacy and security considerations. Rule of thumb: lack of response to specific questions about protecting user data is a red flag, John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, told us in an email. A company that cares about security should want to reassure users that they are in good hands. Heres what the companies told us.

              Fitbit App: Big Promises

If youve owned a Fitbit device over the past few years, you wont be surprised by anything in the Fitbit app. With the launch of the Charge 5, the company hasnt changed how the app looks or works at all.

Since we have , I wont rehash the app much here. Overall, its a very well-designed experience with everything organized quite intuitively. Data is presented in a macro, easy-to-understand format. With a tap, you can dive progressively deeper into details for that data.

The big thing to keep in mind here, though, is that one of the core features of the Charge 5 doesnt exist in the Fitbit app yet. The Daily Readiness Score has been a pretty large aspect of Fitbits promotional campaign for this tracker, but I cant tell you much about it because its not available yet.

One of the star features of the Charge isn’t available at launch.

In theory, the DRS will take all the data your tracker obtains sleep, steps, workouts, stress, mindfulness, etc. and combine it all into easily understood bites. For example, if the app determines you didnt get enough sleep the night before, it might tell you to skip your usual morning workout. Conversely, if you slept really well, it might tell you to push harder with your workout to maximize gains. If you slept well but your stress levels are super high, maybe it would tell you to go easy for the rest of the day.

How To Check Your Fitbit Sleep Statistics

After you wake in the morning, you can review the information Fitbit has recorded about your sleep.

Start the Fitbit app on your phone and wait for it to sync. You can see your overall sleep time on the Today page. This is the time Fitbit believes you were asleep the previous evening, not including any time you were restless or woke up during the night.

Tap the sleep entry to go to the detailed Sleep page. At the top of the page, you’ll see a graph that shows how you slept for the last week.

Swipe the graph to see three tabs: how long you slept each night, your sleep schedule , and a summary of your sleep stages.

Below the graph is a list of your individual daily sleep cycles. It displays much more detail about your sleep stages throughout the night.

To see this in more detail, tap the day you want to view. On the detailed page, you can also compare your actual sleep to a “benchmark” of how the average person of your age and sex sleeps.

              The Lack Of Device Customization

New Fitbit Charge Wireless Activity Tracker + Sleep ...

Even though it was easy to scroll back and forth on the tracker, the volume of tabs and features is… a lot. For example, I never used the timers or text notificationsand dont see myself using them in the futureand would like to get rid of the excess tabs clogging my home screen, but thats not an option for most of the pre-loaded apps.

Similarly, I think the Charge 5 could benefit from some customizable simplification for the workout statistics. While walking or running, you can view your current pace, average pace, heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, time of day, distance traveled, time spent working out and zone minutes earned by tapping through several screens on your tracker. Its nice that Fitbit includes so many data points, but it feels cluttered and makes it more difficult than it should be to check these statistics while exercising. I could tap the screen three times to look at my heart rate, then would have to tap four more times to see how far I had run and then four more times to get back to my heart rate. Its unlikely that youll be keeping tabs on all these statistics in the middle of a workout, and it would be smart if you could remove the ones you dont use so you can do less tapping mid-movementthis customizability is also not an option on the Charge 5.

Wear Your Fitbit On Your Wrist

Some Fitbit models, like the Inspire 2 and the original Inspire, allow you to wear your Fitbit in a clip.

Unfortunately, when you wear your Fitbit in a clip and set your Inspire to on-clip mode, the heart rate sensors automatically turn off.

That means that your Fitbit in the clip-position can only record sleep in the three general categories of awake, restless, and asleep since it doesnt record any heart rate data.

So for folks who wear their Fitbits in a clip or pendant when sleeping, try wearing it on your wrist and see if that makes a difference.

When you wear your Fitbit on your wrist and set it to wrist mode, it automatically detects when you are sleeping and records your sleep stages using your heart rate information.

Thats why you must check that your Fitbit is set to on-wrist and not on-clip mode in the Fitbit Settings app.

              Fitbit Care And Maintenance Details

Fitbit devices often come with customizable bands, and cleaning requirements change depending on the type of band you have.

For instance, if youre wearing an elastomer band, clean the band and your wrist with water or a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Do not clean using a hand sanitizer, dish soap, body soap, hand soap, cleaning wipes, or household cleaner as these can get trapped between the band and skin and cause irritation.

Leather bands must be wiped down with a non-abrasive lint-free cloth, lightly dampened at most. Fitbits leather bands arent resistant to water, and cleaning with water might cause discoloration. Metal bands might also experience tarnish or discoloration if excessively cleaned with water.

What Should I Know About Fitbit Sleep Stages

If you use a Fitbit device with heart-rate tracking to track your sleep, you can see a record of the sleep stages you cycle through at night. This article answers frequently asked questions about sleep stages.

While youre asleep each night, your body typically goes through several sleep cycles that last on average 90 minutes. In each cycle you alternate between two types of sleep:

Light Sleep and Deep SleepWith less brain activity than REM sleep, non-rapid eye movement includes the stages of light sleep and deep sleep. Periods of deep sleep are typically longer early in the night.

Rapid Eye Movement SleepThe stage associated with vivid dreams, REM sleep periods are typically longer as the night goes on .

During a sleep cycle, its most common to go from light sleep to deep sleep, back to light sleep, and then into REM sleep. Then the cycle generally repeats, but sleep patterns vary naturally.

Sleep stages are traditionally measured in a lab using an electroencephalogram to detect brain activity along with other systems to monitor eye and muscle activity. While this method is the gold standard for measuring sleep stages , your device can estimate your sleep stages in a more comfortable, convenient way.

Fitbits sleep researchers and the National Sleep Foundation describe the following sleep stages. The names of the stages are what weve chosen to use in your Fitbit sleep log.

              Fitbit Charge 5 Specs

No matter how you slice it, the Fitbit Charge 5 is expensive. There are plenty of trackers out there that offer similar features for much less money. Not to mention that the high price of the Charge 5 puts it in dangerous territory of being priced like a smartwatch, making it more of an in-betweener than maybe it should be.

Obviously, the Fitbit Charge 4 is one of the easiest alternatives to recommend. Fitbit doesnt sell it anymore, but its still easy to find for $50 cheaper than the Charge 5, and it does pretty much everything that device does, including Fitbit Pay support. It also has Spotify controls and an altimeter, which the Charge 5 lacks. You lose out on EDA scanning and the full-color display, though.

              See also:

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is another good fitness tracker from Fitbit. For about half the price of a Charge 5, youll get a very basic tracker that excels at standard fitness, health, and sleep tracking. You wont get the color display, EDA scanner, or NFC payments, but this is a solid option for folks who just want a no-frills tracker.

Coming down in price a bit we have the full-color Huawei Band 6 . It has some downsides like non-removable straps and limited smartwatch-style features. However, its got a great price, great battery life, and many of the health-tracking features of the Charge 5 .
