Fitbit Alta Hr Verdict

Came straight to the conclusion? Heres the short version: the Alta HR is, for casual exercisers, one of the best and most motivational health-trackers around. The heart-rate tracking adds some genuinely insightful meat to your stats, and it has an almost uncanny ability to tune into the type of exercise youre doing. The week-long battery life is also a big bonus.

Sadly, the Alta HR notches up a few too many minors to get full marks: its not water-resistant, the screen is unresponsive and hard to read in sunlight, and its missing a few handy features that are found in other Fitbits like guided breathing and an altimeter. The sleep-tracking features are also more about promise than real insight right now. Its a slight shame, because it feels like Fitbit could have made a five star tracker if it didnt have one eye on balancing out the rest of its range.

But unless youre a swimmer or multi-sporter who likes to get lots of live data from your watch during exercise, its the best one its made so far.

Turn On On Wrist Mode

The first thing you should check is that the On Wrist mode is switched on. Inspire 2 can be worn on the wrist or as a clip. If the On Clip mode is active, the tracker does not monitor heart rate and some other features. This includes sleep tracking.

To find this open main clock face and scroll up to Settings. Choose that and scroll up or down to find the clip option.

The main reason for owning the Inspire 2 is that you’re most interested in keeping tabs on things like step counts, sleep quality and maybe having some heart rate metrics to look over too. That’s not to say you can’t get some sports watch-like features here as well though if that’s something you want to track.

The sensor array hasn’t changed in as far as what you can track. There’s a 3-axis accelerometer to track indoor and outdoor activity, and an optical heart rate monitor for continuously monitoring heart rate and letting you work out in heart rate zones.

You also have connected GPS support, which means you can use your phone’s GPS signal to more accurately track outdoor activities. We are disappointed to see that an altimeter misses the cut once again, which means you still can’t track elevation like stairs climbed during your day.

The tracking experience on the band lets you tap on the bottom of the main watch screen to scroll through your daily stats. You can also swipe up to see individual daily stats, which does include some data you can only manually enter on the Fitbit app things like water intake and food tracking.

From an accuracy point of view, we wore it alongside a Garmin fitness tracker and found step counts and distance were within 500-600 steps of the Garmin. The breakdown of where those steps occurred during the day was consistent too.

How Does Fitbit Detect The Sleep Stages

Every night, sleepers will go through four to six sleep stages divided into the previously described cycles: light, deep, and REM.

Each cycle will last nine minutes on average. Thus, the accuracy of the sleep tracking and sleep score is tightly lighted to the quality of detecting the cycles and stages. This is where the quality of the algorithms and sensors comes into play.

The Fitbit smartwatches and trackers will monitor the heart rate and extract the Heart Rate Variability . The HRV corresponds to the millisecond differences between two consecutive heartbeats.

The HRV will change during the different sleep cycles and, when combined with the movement detector sensors, will accurately detect the sleep stage.

How To Check Your Fitbit Sleep Statistics

After you wake in the morning, you can review the information Fitbit has recorded about your sleep.

Start the Fitbit app on your phone and wait for it to sync. You can see your overall sleep time on the Today page. This is the time Fitbit believes you were asleep the previous evening, not including any time you were restless or woke up during the night.

Tap the sleep entry to go to the detailed Sleep page. At the top of the page, you’ll see a graph that shows how you slept for the last week.

Swipe the graph to see three tabs: how long you slept each night, your sleep schedule , and a summary of your sleep stages.

Below the graph is a list of your individual daily sleep cycles. It displays much more detail about your sleep stages throughout the night.

To see this in more detail, tap the day you want to view. On the detailed page, you can also compare your actual sleep to a “benchmark” of how the average person of your age and sex sleeps.

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is incredibly simple to set up. We’re talking minutes to go from unpacking it to placing it on your wrist and enjoying it tracking everything you could want. The wrist strap is a simple plastic band that doesn’t require you to measure it or do anything too complicated with setup undertaken via the Fitbit app. If you’ve previously used a Fitbit before, you can sign in with your existing account, choosing to sync a new device in the form of the Fitbit Inspire 2. It’s simple stuff and the kind of thing anyone can manage, even if they’re not particularly tech savvy.

If you’re new to Fitbit, all you need to do is enter a few key details like your age, weight, height and fitness aims, and Fitbit Inspire 2 adjusts things accordingly so it knows roughly what to expect of your heart rate and general performance throughout the day.

After that’s done, it’s all fairly hands-off if you want it to be. You’ll receive occasional notifications letting you know of how your steps are going throughout the day but the Fitbit Inspire 2 mostly blends in. Similarly, you can check in on the app but it’s not vital if you have a busy day. A 10-day battery life certainly helps here as you won’t have to worry about recharging it too often either.

The Inspire HR is Fitbit’s low-cost, entry level tracker but that doesn’t stop it from being a surprisingly powerful health and activity device that will suit plenty of people.

It doesn’t look like Fitbit’s going to replace its device any time soon. But over a year after its release, is it still a contender? We’ve been using the Fitbit Inspire HR for much of the last year, and felt it was time to update our review against the latest fitness trackers.

The Fitbit Inspire HR manages to combine heart based activity tracking, workout detection and powerful sleep monitoring into a small and discreet wrist band form. What’s more, with a generous screen, it will also display notifications and your goal data too.

Natural comparisons will be made with the Xiaomi Mi Band 4, Garmin Vivosmart 4 and Samsung Galaxy Fit. Fitbit’s riposte isn’t simply to cram in every feature under the sun, but to make its tracker better value for money while sticking to the formula that has made it a powerhouse in the world of wearables.

Because when choosing a fitness tracker, it’s often about the insights and motivation from the app, just as much as the design and sensors on the wrist.

How well does the Inspire HR achieve that balance? We’ve been living with the fitness tracker to find out.

Setting Up And Using The Inspire 2

You’ll need to download the app before setting up the Inspire 2, and create a Fitbit account if you don’t already have one. If you already have a Fitbit account, tap your profile image, select Set Up a Device, select the Inspire 2 from the list, then follow the on-screen instructions.

During the setup process, you’ll need to enter a four-digit code that appears on the Inspire 2’s display, into the app. Once it’s set up, the app offers an overview of the Inspire’s main features, how to change the band, and how to navigate its interface. The entire process only takes about 10 minutes.

To get calls, texts, and app notifications on the Inspire 2, go to your phone’s settings menu, tap Bluetooth, tap the information icon next to your device, and enable Share System Notifications. Then, from the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap your profile picture > Inspire 2 > Notifications, and toggle on the ones you want to receive.

After going through these steps, app notifications successfully came though on my Inspire 2 test unit, but it never alerted me for calls or texts. Fitbit says the Inspire 2 needs to be within 30 feet of your phone to receive notifications, but that wasn’t the problem. I’m not sure what caused the issue, because I checked my settings several times and the Inspire 2 never showed call and text notifications, even when my phone was in close range.

How To Get Alerts To Fitbit

To get alerts youll need to make sure your Bluetooth is on on your phone, and youll need to turn on All Day Sync in settings.

When I was testing it out, I got call alerts okay, though they wouldnt display automatically youd get a short buzz and then youd need to touch to see what it said. Initially, I wasnt able to get it to receive texts. I tried shutting the device off and toggling the settings in the app, but no go for the first few hours I was wearing it. Oddly later in the day, I just started getting my messages after all. So although there was some initial weirdness, everything seemed fine in the end.

Sleep Insights / Coaching

Either my sleep is better than I thought, or I just havent worn the Alta HR for long enough yet, because I havent received any useful sleep insights so far. I know they will eventually come as the device gets to know me better, so hopefully by the next article Ill have some to discuss.

What I did receive though is a couple of emails reminding me of all the different sleep features I can and should be making use of. I like that Fitbit follow you up this way, gently motivating you to do important things like set sleep goals and reminders.

Update note: for some reason, the insights never arrived when I had the Alta HR. But they do now with my Versa, even though they are general and would only be personalized if you go premium.

Fitbit Inspire Hr: Fitness Tracking

The Inspire doesn’t have built-in GPS, which means the Ionic smartwatch and the Charge 4 are the only Fitbits that can be used without a phone to track outdoor runs and bike rides. Fitbit has instead focused on giving its smaller, sleeker devices longer battery life, though the Inspire is also underwhelming in that category .

After selecting Run from the Exercise menu, the Inspire locks onto your phone’s GPS signal quickly. You then press play to hit the ground running. The Inspire accurately tracked my 3.6-mile route through Brooklyns Prospect Park, though I expected it to because of the signal from my iPhone.

The Inspire also automatically records a handful of workouts, which is useful when I take long, brisk walks around Brooklyn and don’t think to record my calorie burn. That information is synced to the Fitbit app, which is still one of my favorite fitness-tracking apps. Fitbit plans to redesign the app to make it simpler and easier to use later this year.

The Inspire’s heart-rate sensor makes more health and fitness features possible, which is why the more expensive HR is worth the premium over the cheaper alternative. You can use the heart rate-based Relax app for guided breathing exercises if your beats per minute are too high. You can also set goal-based exercises on the band before workouts and see your cardio fitness level, which the base Inspire doesn’t offer.

What Is Fitbit Inspire

The Fitbit Inspire is the lower version of the Fitbit companys Inspire production it is 30% less costly than the Fitbit Inspire HR. The Fitbit Inspire does not offer features like an active heart rate sensor, guided breathing features, or even swim tracking. Fitbit Inspire is a budget edition of the Inspire HR. It offers basic features like step and activity tracking, the number of calories burnt, sleep tracking, and the vibrating silent alarm.

It also features automatic exercise recognition and short reminders to move your body if sat for long. And the essential features that are notification and alerts the Fitbit Inspire offers at least two colors in the purple and black edition market. One of Fitbit Inspire most recognizable features is that it can be worn as a clip-on to your waist instead of wearing it on your wrist.

The Inspire is a budget addition and offers low-cost features moreover, the Inspire HR and Fitbit Inspire both offer, A very similar choice of elements less than the heart rate sensor. The Fitbit Inspire is a budget band for those looking to get into the world of fitness but with a very low-cost investment.

Nonsleep-Staging Fitbit Models

A total of 7 studies involved epoch-by-epoch investigation of nonsleep-staging Fitbit models with reference to PSG in differentiating between sleep and wake state . Out of these 7 studies, 1 consisted of two different samples, thereby increasing the total number of evaluations to 8. Across these trials, Fitbit versus PSG analyses identified sleep epochs with accuracy values between 0.81 and 0.93, sensitivity values between 0.87 and 0.99, and specificity values between 0.10 and 0.52.

Sleep Epoch Identification

A total of 3 studies evaluated the performance of sleep-staging Fitbit models with PSG as reference in identifying sleep epochs through EBE analyses . A total of 1 study included two different samples, thereby increasing the number of possible comparisons to four. Relative to PSG, detection of sleep epochs in three possible comparisons revealed sensitivity values between 0.95 and 0.96 detection of sleep epochs in four comparisons revealed specificity values between 0.58 and 0.69 and detection of sleep epochs, assessed in only a single study , revealed an accuracy of 0.90.

Sleep-Stage Identification

A total of 3 studies appraised performance of sleep-staging Fitbit models in identifying sleep stages by means of EBE analysis . Relative to PSG, accuracy varied between 0.69 and 0.81 in detecting light sleep , between 0.36 and 0.89 in detecting deep sleep , and between 0.62 and 0.89 in detecting REM sleep.

Does My Tracker Have Fitbit Sleep Score

The first thing you need to know is that not every Fitbit offers a Sleep Score. Pretty much all Fitbit trackers have Sleep Stages, but the two features are not the same. Sleep Score gives you more insight into your sleep habits and collects more data through the heart rate monitor and pulse oximeter. This means Sleep Score can only be found on the companys newer wearables: the Fitbit Versa, Versa 2, Versa Lite, Versa 3, Ionic, Inspire HR, Inspire 2, Charge 4, , Sense, and .

The other major difference between Sleep Stages and Sleep Score can be easily spotted in the name Sleep Score gives you an actual score, which ranges from 0 to 100.
