Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch Carlyle Review

Fossil Gen 5 Automatic Sleep Tracking

The Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch is the fashion latest smartwatch, and yes, it continues to run on Google’s Wear OS operating system.

Fossil’s veritable army of Wear watches is one of the few positives for a platform that continues to struggle to make waves against the likes of Apple, Samsung and Garmin.

With Gen 5, it’s about fitting more smarts into a design that continues to look and feel like a ‘dumb’ watch. For Gen 4, we got sporty features like a heart rate monitor and GPS. Now Fossil is improving its communication powers, adding a speaker to let you take calls from your wrist. That onboard speaker will also improve existing features like Google Assistant.

We also get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor, which means the Fossil Sport is no longer the only watch in Fossil’s Wear family to reap the benefits of the new smartwatch chipset. Most notably, there’s a promised improvement with battery life.

But has Fossil done enough with Gen 5 to get us excited about Wear OS again? We’ve been putting it to the test to find out. Here’s our verdict on the Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch.

Break a sweat without losing the charge with new battery-saving workouts. The new Wellness App monitors real-time metrics and optimizes battery life by shifting power consumption off the main processor. Track the essential health readouts you truly care about like heart rate, pace, distance, steps, calories and more.

Track sleep history, monitor your restfulness and set sleep goals. With the Gen 5s ability to quickly charge and enhanced battery modes, the watch can be worn all day and night. Charge while getting ready in the morning and go effectively enabling 24/7 wearability.

Cardio Fitness Level, or VO2 max, is one of the best indicators of overall cardiorespiratory health and is often used in tracking long-term health. The new tracker shows an estimation of VO2 max using resting heart rate and user biometrics to display an approximated overall fitness level over time.

Updates include custom profile creation and a simplified design for easier readability. Custom Mode now allows users to save an individual profile to fit your life and quickly access. To ensure extended battery life, the watch will prompt users to switch to Extended Mode to reach 24 hours of battery life.

Google Fit And Wear Os Are Getting Improvements To Sleep Tracking Social Sharing And More

These days, its more important than ever to keep track of your health and try to stay in shape. However, keeping track of all of this can be a huge ordeal. The sheer number of fitness trackers and apps available can be a little daunting, to say the least. Enter Google Fit, which does its best to collect all of this data and present it in helpful ways.

With the latest update, new features have been added to Google Fit and Wear OS, along with some UI tweaks to ensure you keep hitting your fitness and wellness goals.

Getting a good nights rest is one of the most important parts of staying healthy. Unfortunately, getting enough sleep isnt always easy to come by, but at least well all be able to keep track of this information better with the new improvements to Google Fit.

The latest update to the app will provide even more sleep data than before, such as being able to view sleep stages or nightly activity. There will also be an option to set a bedtime schedule goal, in case youre like me and have trouble getting into bed on time.

Devices that sync sleep data with Google Fit include, the Fossil Gen 5E Smartwatch, Oura Ring, or Withings sleep tracking mat. Tracking Activity On Wear Os

Wear OS is slowly becoming a better place for those who like tracking activity, especially since fourth-gen devices began packing GPS and heart rate monitors.

However, having sensors present is only half the job, with every second of logged activity only as useful as the portal used to store it in. In the case of Wear OS, that’s the Google Fit app.

Available on both your phone and the smartwatch, Google Fit splits your daily activity into two key components: Move Minutes and Heart Points.

However, it’s also the place that stores logged exercises, step counting history, sleep data and weight information, through a tab called the Journal.

Open up the apps list on your wrist and you’ll see entries for Fit , Fit Breathe , and Fit Workout . The basics, like step counting, are taken care of automatically.

Open up the Fit app to see your stats for today and for recent days. You’ll also be able to see your current heart rate, if you’re using a watch that supports the feature.

Scroll further down inside the Fit app and choose Settings to customize how the app works: You can set which activities are tracked for example, and which sensors the Google Fit app has access to.

For the most comprehensive Google Fit experience, make sure you’ve got the Google Fit app for Android installed as well, which is able to sync readings from your wrist.

Battery Life And Specs

Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch to Get a Wellness App That Tracks ...

Fossil hasnt said how big the battery is in the Fossil Gen 6, but the company has said that it offers upwards of 24 hours of life.

More impressively, it apparently charges two times faster than leading smartwatches, allowing you to go from zero to 80% in just over 30 minutes.

Charging is handled via a magnetic puck with a USB at the other end, and the watch also has smart battery modes to keep it running for longer.

As for the core specs, the Fossil Gen 6 is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus chipset. This is the first smartwatch to use one, so it should provide plenty of power here.

The watch also has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage which you might want to use to store apps and music.

What Is Wear Os By Google

For every smartwatch, there’s a software platform running on-screen. With the Apple Watch, it’s watchOS. For Fitbit, it’s FitbitOS. You get the idea.

Wear OS works slightly differently, however, as Google partners with third-party smartwatch makers. So, instead of a Google-branded smartwatch, you’ll instead see watches such as the Fossil Gen 5 Carlyle, Fossil Sport, TicWatch or Skagen Falster 3.

This means there’s a much greater variety of designs in the Wear OS catalog. Like the Android smartphone platform, however, the software is essentially the same from device to device.

Which Wear Os Smartwatch Is Best

Below, we’ve summarised five of the top smartwatches running Wear OS you can buy in 2020, but head over to our complete Wear OS smartwatch buying guide for the full list.

Launched in 2020, Oppo’s debut smartwatch merges Wear OS with its own Color OS and wraps it up in a square design that will make you think of the Apple Watch.

Available in 41mm and 46mm sizes, it has all of those key Wear features like notifications, watch faces, payments and a built-in speaker and microphone.

The larger Oppo Watch gives you added LTE connectivity, a high resolution display and quicker fast charging support. If you can live without those features, the smaller option still serves as a smart-looking watch companion.

Features And Battery Life

Under the hood, the Gen 5 features an accelerometer, an altimeter, an ambient light sensor, GPS, a gyroscope, a heart rate monitor, and NFC. With Qualcomm’s new Wear 3100 processor, performance feels smooth when using apps and scrolling through menus.

The watch runs Google’s Wear OS 2.0, which lags far behind Apple’s watchOS. Touch navigation is easy enough: swipe up to view notifications, swipe down for the shortcuts menu, swipe left for tiles, and swipe right for Google Assistant. You can also rearrange the order in which tiles appear and add or remove specific ones. Spotify and Noonlight are preinstalled, and you can download additional third-party apps from the Google Play Store including Pandora, Uber, The Washington Post, and more. But the library isn’t nearly as extensive as watchOS, which features far more options, including ones that I use on a daily basis like Bank of America and Facebook Messenger.

As usual, Android users can respond to text messages and take calls right from the watch using the microphone and speaker. For the first time on a WearOS watch, iPhone users can make and receive calls from the watch as well. Using the speaker, you can also play music, hear responses from Google Assistant and translations from Google Translate, and turn on sound alerts for notifications. In Google Assistant responses sounded crisp and clear.

Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch Review: The Verdict

The Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch is the best Wear OS watch you can buy, even in early 2020. It delivers in nearly every area performance, aesthetics, and customizability. I just wish the watch lasted longer on a charge without turning sensors on and off, though that seems like more of a Wear OS problem than a Fossil problem.

Fossil nailed it with this smartwatch.

If youre on board with Wear OS, youll love the Fossil Gen 5. Hell, even if you arent totally on board with Wear OS, the Fossil watch will probably make you think twice about it.

Fossil nailed the hardware with this watch. Now lets hope Google puts as much effort into Wear OS.

Rather than Google encouraging these updates across the Wear OS ecosystem.

Fossil Smartwatch Update Improves Fitness And Sleep Tracking

Watchmaker Fossil announced it has pushed its own update to its Gen 5 line of smartwatches, bringing with it a number of new exclusively developed by Fossil Group features, including fitness and sleep tracking, and battery life improvements.

The Gen 5 series and all of Fossils other smartwatches runs on Googles Wear OS smartwatch operating system, and though wearers usually have to wait for Google for any updates, this time Fossil decided to push them out itself, in a move that may be attributed to a January 2019 deal between the two companies that resulted in Google purchasing a portion of Fossils smartwatch tech team.

The first major addition the update brings is a sleep tracking system that will allow wearers to record their sleep history while setting sleep goals and monitoring restfulness, a feature similar to one Apple is expected to introduce in its upcoming watchOS 7.

As for the fitness-focused improvements, a new cardio fitness level tracker combines the wearers resting heart rate with their age, gender and weight details to determine an approximation of cardiorespiratory health and overall fitness levels over a designated period of time. It also supports VO2 max estimation meaning maximum oxygen uptake, which measures the maximum amount of oxygen an individual can use during intense exercise.

Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch: Fitness & Heart Rate Tracking

As on Fossil’s Gen 4 watches, Google Fit is at the heart of all things fitness and sports tracking. Nike Run Club now also comes preinstalled, but you can of course make use of third-party apps found inside the Google Play Store. You’ve still got built-in GPS and a heart rate monitor here too, with the hope you’ll find it a decent sports watch replacement.

In our testing, it generally performed well. In practical terms, the silicone strap was suitable to wear during workouts after pushing that heart rate up. Yes, it’s a fashion watch first, but it can handle getting sweaty too.

It kept pace with the connected GPS tracking skills on the Fitbit Charge 3. Mapped data in a mixed urban-open area didn’t throw up any surprises, which is a marked improvement from what we found with the performance of Fossil’s Gen 4 duo.

HR accuracy compared: Polar H10 chest strap and Fossil Gen

The heart rate monitoring was pretty consistent for a range of workouts and outdoor bike rides, though in some sessions against a Polar heart rate chest strap monitor it came up short in terms of accuracy.

The Gen 5 didn’t pick up some of the heart rate spikes, then tended to exaggerate those spikes in other parts of the session. One session saw the chest strap record an average of 92bpm while the Gen 5 clocked the same session at 118bpm.
