How To Ensure Your Sleep Tracking Is Accurate

If youve been wanting to learn more about your sleep, you are probably super stoked about the sleep tracking. But to make sure that youre getting the most accurate information, youll want to do several things.

Put your watch on two hours before bed. This will give the watch heart rate data before you fall asleep, hopefully making it more accurate at determining when you fall asleep.

In order to make sure the heart rate tracking is accurate, make sure the watch is snug on your wrist, but not tight. You dont want to be uncomfortable when you sleep. Wear it every night to get into the habit. Youll get inaccurate sleep data if you leave it charging overnight.

Finally, if you own more than one Garmin, set the watch you want to wear at night as your preferred tracker in the Garmin Connect app. Incidentally, youll also have to make sure the app is up-to-date and that you have a valid birth date saved in the User Settings.

Why Is Sleep Important

Many of us routinely skimp on sleep in fact, two thirds of adults throughout developed nations get less than eight hours sleep a night. 

You probably don’t realise how sleep-deprived you are if you start each day with a strong coffee. Caffeine blocks sleepiness signals, artificially making you feel more alert. 

Insufficient sleep increases your risk of Alzheimers, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, stroke and numerous other health problems. It shatters your immune system. How To Get The Most Accurate Sleep Data With Your Garmin

We wont delve into the accuracy debate here, but to ensure youre getting the most accurate sleep data possible from your Garmin, you need to:

  • Wear your device at least two hours before bedtime and keep it on while you sleep.
  • Make sure your devices heart rate monitor is on, and the device fits snugly but comfortably.
  • Set your watch as your Preferred Activity Tracker.

Does Garmin Instinct Track Sleep

Garmin Instinct tracks sleep with a feature called Advanced Sleep Monitoring . Essentially, ASM keeps track of your sleep stages, including light, deep, and REM sleep. It also monitors oxygen saturation in the bloodstream while your eyes are closed.

To see your sleep metrics, you need to install the Garmin Connect mobile app or its web-based version. 

The app analyzes the data collected by your watch and shows you:

  • How long you sleep each night.
  • How long you spend in each sleep stage.
  • How long you are awake.
  • Your movement during sleep.
  • Your blood oxygen level.

A Pulse Oximeter or SpO2 sensor, which is only available in Instinct Solar, measures oxygen saturation. Your oxygen saturation level should be between 95 and 100 percent.

If the app shows you a number below this, it could be a sign of a breathing disorder, so you should consult with your doctor.

Given the raging Covid-19 pandemic, you should seek medical attention if your Garmin Instinct is showing concerning numbers. 

Another metric not included in the Instinct model but measured by several Garmin watches, such as Vivoactive 4 and Fenix 6, is respiration rate

Respiration rate shows how many times you breathe in a minute, which generally should be between 12 and 20 during sleep.

How To Track Sleep Using The Garmin Vivosmart

Just how accurate is Garmins sleep tracking? Can it diagnose sleep problems?

The short answer is that Garmins activity tracker is not meant to be a scientific instrument or a substitute for a sleep study. For example, some users have reported the wearable thinks youre sleeping when youre watching TV because your hands arent moving But it still has its uses.

How Do You Measure Rem Sleep

This is usually done at a sleep lab or centre. Scientists attach electrodes to your head to take three types of measuREMents while you sleep. The first measuREMent is the electrical activity of your brain, measured by a method called electroencephalography or EEG. The second measurement is muscle activity measured using electromyography and the third is eye movement, measured using electro-oculography.

How Fitbit Tracks Sleep

All Fitbit fitness trackers and smartwatches will track your sleep when you wear them to bed. After an hour of your body being immobile, your Fitbit will detect that you’re asleep. 

Fitbits with heart-rate monitors, other than the Fitbit Surge and Fitbit Charge HR, are designed to track sleep stages. The Fitbit Charge 4 , Fitbit Inspire HR Fitbit Charge 3 , Fitbit Versa 2 and Fitbit Versa are amongst the Fitbits which do this. They’ll give you graphs and charts showing daily, weekly and monthly stats. Usefully, you can edit the times that have been recorded if you don’t think they’re correct. 

Some Fitbits, such as those in the Versa range, also have a sleep-cycle alarm, which Fitbit calls Smart Wake. 

Fitbits which don’t track heart rate still show sleep patterns in the Fitbit app.

At time of writing, Fitbit is working on getting clearance for a tool to detect sleep apnoea . In the meantime, you can use the SpO2 feature on Fitbits which have this to check your blood oxygen levels across the night. Big fluctuations could indicate breathing disturbances such as sleep apnoea, but you should of course check with your GP if concerned.

Set Your Garmin To Showcase The Most Accurate Sleep Data For You

Follow these steps to help your Garmin smartwatch or tracker get the best data while you sleep.

  • Make sure you set your birth date in Garmin Connectin the Garmin Connect app, select Garmin Devices > Device Settings or User Settings. Make sure to save those updated settings and then sync your device before hitting the sack!
  • Check for any updates for your device and the Garmin Connect App
  • Clean and dry your arm before putting on the device
  • If you recently worked out using your Garmin, make sure you rinse the device with fresh water after each workout
  • Wear the device at least 2 hours before bedtime and keep it on while sleeping
  • Make sure the devices heart rate monitor is on
  • Keep the device fit snug around your arm, wrist , or your preferred body location
  • If you have more than one Garmin activity tracker, set the device with advanced sleep monitoring as your Preferred Activity Tracker
  • In the app, go to Garmin Devices> select the device you want as your Preferred Activity Tracker > choose Device Settings or Activity Tracking>select Set as Preferred Activity Tracker
  • Set up Pulse Ox sleep tracking and/or All-Day Pulse Ox  to continuously measure your blood oxygen level, or SpO2, throughout the day and/or while you sleep
  • From the settings menu in the Garmin Connect Mobile app, select Garmin Devices
  • Select your device
  • Select Activity Tracking > Pulse Ox and toggle on All-Day Pulse Ox and/or Pulse Ox Sleep Tracking

    How Does Garmin Monitor Sleep

    Garmin and other major smartwatch makers generally use two sensors, the optical heart rate sensor and the accelerometer, to figure out whether youre asleep or not.

    About five minutes after you sleep, your heart rate starts to drop below the average levels while youre awake. So, when the accelerometer shows that youre not moving and the HR sensor shows your heart rate has fallen, they know that youre asleep.

    You hear over and over again that your rest is just as important as your workouts. And theres a very good reason: its true. When you workout hard, you need to dedicate yourself to recovery just as fervently. While most runners understand how to track workouts using their beloved Garmins, many dont realize that our watches can also be used to track data during recovery especially sleep. If you have a Garmin, chances are you love it. Now is the time to go beyond running data, VO2 max, race predictions, and so forth. Its time to start using your Garmin to track and get data on your sleep.

    In this article, well explain everything that you need to know about Garmin sleep tracking so that you can use your Garmin watch for more than just running.

    Smartphone Apps For Sleep

    If you don’t want to wear your smartwatch or fitness tracker to bed or you can’t, because the short battery life requires you to stick it on charge every night there are plenty of smartphone apps you can use instead. 

    Smartphone apps rely on an accelerometer to detect movement and, by extension, sleep. So, even more than with wristworn devices, you can’t expect them to track super accurately. 

    Still, many offer useful tools – for example, playing ‘dreamscapes’ to help you sleep better, giving you tips from sleep experts and teaching you cognitive techniques and behavioural strategies to reset your sleeping patterns. 

    You could use Pillow on your phone instead of watch, for example. 

    If you use your watch, Pillow says it will take heart-rate measurements into its calculations. If you use your phone in addition to or instead of your watch, it will use the phone’s microphone to include analysis of your snoring; if you restrict access to the microphone, Pillow says its sleep analysis could be less accurate. Pillow is an iOS app only, so you can’t use it if you’re on Android.

    How Accurate Is Garmin Rem Sleep

    Garmin indicates through their studies, The matrix shows that the classifier predicts deep, light, and REM sleep stages at roughly the same 69% accuracy rate. Wake is slightly more accurate at 73%. The most common misclassifications are classifying true deep sleep as light sleep and classifying true REM sleep as light sleep.

    What Is Garmin Sleep Tracking

    Garmin sleep tracking is more officially known as Advanced Sleep Monitoring . Although previous Garmin watches could track heart rate, newer Garmin watches have an optical heart rate sensor, allowing the watch to give you more detailed information about your sleep.

    With the optical heart rate sensor, the watch can measure heart rate variability, which lets you know when youre in REM or non-REM. Your heart rate is all over the place when youre in REM sleep, which allows your watch to differentiate between the two. 

    The watch will get more accurate the more often you wear it because it will start to figure out what your heart rate is when you fall asleep. It will also use the accelerometer to track movement to account for any times that you get up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break.

    Garmin Quietly Introduces Automatic Sleep Detection To Existing Activity Trackers

    Over the last few days Garmin has enabled automatic sleep tracking on all of their sleep capable activity tracker devices.  They did so not as part of any firmware update that you have to install, but rather on their backend platform that automatically recognizes when you went to sleep and how many hours of sleep you got.

    For example, last night I used the Garmin Vivoactive with the new functionality.  Normally, Id have to tap this fancy little button:

    Except last night , I dont bother to.  Instead, I just fall asleep once Id declared e-mail bankruptcy for the night.  And according to Garmin, that was about 2:05AM:

    Which, based on my rough recollection of the evening , is pretty much correct. Then, 5 hours and 51 minutes later, at 7:56AM I woke up according to Garmin Connect.  Thats about right, I had whacked the snooze alarm starting about 10 or so minutes earlier, before heading to my laptop to start presenting to people in Asia on a conference call at precisely 8:00AM.

    Now you wont notice much else different in terms of the graph itself.  Its still what Id classify as kinda-not-useful, mostly just looking like waves in the middle of the ocean and having about as much bearing on my life as waves 2,000 miles off the coast of Nouakchott, Mauritania:

    Which Tests Of Sleep

    We don’t test how accurately a wearable can track sleep stages. However, for those that do offer sleep tracking, we look at how detailed and easy to understand the sleep data is and how plausible the sleep durations seem. 

    If you do buy a wearable for sleep-tracking, make sure you pick one that’s light and comfortable enough to keep on your wrist all night. There’s no point buying one that’s big and bulky, as you’re simply not going to want to wear it. Bear in mind that fitness trackers are smaller and often more conformable to wear than smartwatches, so this might be a better bet, and use our fitness tracker reviews and smartwatch reviews to find a model that ticks the boxes.

    How The Apple Watch Tracks Sleep

    It’s rare that Apple lags far behind other brands, but Apple didn’t have its own sleep app until recently: you had to use a third-party app, such as Pillow. 

    As of watchOS 7, however, you can track your sleep through Apple’s built-in Sleep app. Watch OS 7 works with the Apple Watch Series 3, 4 and 5, as well as the new Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE. If you own one of the earlier versions, make sure your OS is updated. WatchOS 7 isn’t compatible with the Series 1 or 2, though. 

    Once you’ve set up sleep-tracking on your Apple Watch, the Sleep app can detect when and how you’re sleeping, based on your movement and your heart rate. You can use it to set sleep schedules and goals and request a wakeup alarm. You can also set a wind-down time, meaning the watch will go into Sleep Mode for a period in advance of you going to sleep. 

    To our own surprise, we weren’t hugely impressed by the Apple Sleep app. It’s crammed with information, but, aside from the heart rate information, not much of it is all that useful. We’ve tried many other watches that are easier to use for sleep-tracking while also providing for information. You won’t get information on sleep phases either although, as we explained, such data shouldn’t be taken too literally anyway.

    Garmin Health Announces Sleep Study Results

    Garmin announced Advanced Sleep Monitoring, an enhanced capability to more accurately identify sleep stages, last June. Developed against truth data generated by a clinical device, the feature is the result of a sleep study by Garmin Health conducted under the supervision of Dr. Suzanne Stevens, Director of the University of Kansas Medical Center Sleep Medicine Clinic with certifications by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. 

    Dr. Stevens presented the details of the study on May 7th at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. The poster presentation covered study design, results, and the conclusion that Garmin wearables that support Advanced Sleep Monitoring present a valid method to estimate sleep stages. For consumers, this results in invaluable insights regarding their sleep hygiene and how their sleep patterns may be affecting their overall health. For researchers, the results indicate Garmin sleep tracking wearables may be suitable for longitudinal studies where monitoring participant activity and sleep patterns are desired endpoints.

    Making Data Easily Accessible

    While wearables don’t do a perfect job of recording your sleep times, they can present the data to you in an easily digestible format graphs and charts through the companion app, for example.

    ‘But’, she adds, ‘use your judgement and know your personality. If you’re prone to anxiety, sleep tracking may not be for you. Trying to perfect your sleep could be one more thing to fixate on, which could, ironically, stop you sleeping’.
