What Is Restless Legs A Sign Of

Restless legs syndrome can be caused by other conditions that, when successfully treated, may completely resolve the RLS. These include iron deficiency, folate deficiency, magnesium deficiency, anemia, pregnancy, neuropathy, diabetes, fibromyalgia, amyloidosis, celiac disease, venous insufficiency, and end-stage kidney disease.

What Medications Do You Usually Recommend What Are The Possible Side Effects

Dopamine medication can help, but can occasionally have the side effect of the body getting used to it if taken at high doses. Another class of medication is related to gabapentin, a medication historically used for seizures. There are some new medications such as Neupro, a dopamine patch you place on your skin instead of swallowing as a pill. Horizant is a new gabapentin/neurontin-related medication that needs less adjusting of doses compared to older medications.

Pain relievers dont work for RLS. If they help, you probably have something else. I have had many people take over-the-counter sleep aids. Benadryl is an ingredient in most of these treatments and makes RLS symptoms worse. Then they take even higher doses and it sets off a bad spiral. Other medications that make it worse: dopamine antagonists, lithium carbonate, antidepressants such as tricyclics, SSRIs . Wellbutrin is an antidepressant that is an exception and has not been

shown to increase symptoms of RLS.

Taper Off Medication Slowly

The most effective way to minimize symptoms of withdrawal is to slowly taper off your medication. Tapering involves adjusting your dose by a small amount, gradually decreasing until your body gets used to lower levels of the medication. Talk to your doctor who can then create a dose schedule and carefully monitor the process to avoid severe symptoms.

In the past, doctors have recommended a quick medication taper down to the minimum therapeutic dose. A taper involves taking progressively smaller doses over the course of days or weeks.

Recent research published in a prestigious medical journal outlines new recommendations for treating and preventing SSRI withdrawal symptoms. According to these researchers, the best way to stop an SSRI is with a very slow, very long medication taper. They recommend a taper lasting upwards of one month that continues well past the minimum therapeutic dose until the dose is zero.

Are There Any Nutritional Supplements That Might Help

Prozac Restless Leg Syndrome

If you are low in iron, a good supplement would be iron for a few months to see if that helps. Iron can cause GI upset, though, so I only recommend it for people who are low in iron. Magnesium is being studied right now as a treatment, but there isnt enough data to offer it as an official treatment.

Iron Vitamin D & Magnesium Supplementation

Iron deficiency has been associated with RLS, so finding out if you are iron deficient is a good idea. If so, you can eat more iron-rich foods and supplement iron. Vitamin D deficiency could be linked to RLS as well. A study published in Sleep and Breathing found that supplementing vitamin D reduced RLS symptoms.

Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle function, and magnesium deficiency is known to cause muscle cramps, muscle contractions, and problems with nerve impulse conductions. Early research into RLS suggested that magnesium deficiency may be a cause of RLS.

Triggers That Make Restless Legs Worse

Does it seem like your restless legs get worse after you take a certain medication or are under stress? Become aware of your restless legs triggers to relax.

It never fails just as you crawl into bed, your restless legs start acting up again. Symptoms which include pain and tingly, creepy-crawly sensations usually strike at night or when youre relaxing, so sleep problems are one of the chief complaints in people with restless legs syndrome, or RLS.

Although RLS is a neurological problem, certain environmental and external factors have been known to exacerbate symptoms. Avoiding these common restless legs triggers may help calm your jittery limbs so you can get the rest you need.

What Are The Common Side Effects Of Restless Legs Syndrome Medication

All medications may have side effects, and different classes of medications have different side effects. However, this is not a complete list, and you should consult with your healthcare professional for possible side effects and drug interactions based on your specific situation.

Prescription dopamine agonists, gabapentinoids, and opioids all cause sleepiness, fatigue, confusion, and dizziness as common side effects.

Some severe side effects of dopamine agonists are hallucinations and serious impulse control problems, such as overeating or gambling recklessly. However, the most common serious side effects of dopamine agonists are augmentation and withdrawal.

Dopamine agonists have a high risk of withdrawal, called dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome . Even when the drug is tapered, one out of five patients will experience psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts, as well as physical symptoms, including pain, nausea, and drug cravings.

The most serious side effects of gabapentinoids and opioids are drug abuse and overdose. An overdose of either drug can be fatal, but gabapentinoids, unlike opioids, do not have an antidote.

Pain relievers such as over-the-counter NSAIDs and acetaminophen are widely available and safe. NSAIDs, unlike acetaminophen, interfere with blood clotting, so their most serious side effects are bruising and bleeding, which may present in the digestive system.

Does Trazodone Cause Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) Symptoms and Treatment (A Better Night’s Sleep Podcast)

Restless Leg Syndrome, known as RLS, is a neurological disorder which produces uncomfortable sensations in the legs and occasionally in other parts of the body, when the sufferer is at rest or overly tired. Some medications can exacerbate or even cause restless leg symptoms.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

What To Do About Restless Legs Syndrome

Bedtime is far from relaxing for women with this common condition.

Restless legs syndrome is a sensory-motor disorder that causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by an uncomfortable “creepy-crawly” sensation. RLS affects 3% to 5% of adults and is twice as common in women as in men. Symptoms typically flare at night, just as you’re settling down in bed, but they may also arise when you’re resting in a chair. RLS not only causes discomfort and distress, but can also wreak havoc on sleep, causing daytime sleepiness and mood changes. Fortunately, certain lifestyle strategies can help you manage milder forms of RLS, and several medications can provide relief for more serious symptoms.

Communicate With Your Doctor

Ask your doctor if trazodone for depression or sleep issues is right for you. A sleep study may be ordered to determine whether you have PLMD. Some RLS sufferers have found that trazodone improves their quality of life tremendously.

While it’s unusual for trazodone to increase RLS symptoms, some patients have reported this effect. RLS is still not fully understood, and brain chemistry can differ significantly from person to person.

If you are experiencing an increase in RLS symptoms that coincides with the introduction of trazodone to your drug regimen, let your doctor know. She should be able to recommend a different medication for your insomnia or depression.

Before considering the possibility that any drug is increasing your symptoms, however, make sure that your body’s iron stores are well managed. While you may not be technically anemic, the standard required for RLS sufferers is often different than the scale used for individuals without the disorder.

  • Ask your doctor if trazodone for depression or sleep issues is right for you.
  • While it’s unusual for trazodone to increase RLS symptoms, some patients have reported this effect.

What Are The Symptoms Of Rls

RLS produces a set of uncomfort-able sensations, most often in the area of the leg above the ankle but below the knee. Other possible locations include the upper legs, feet, and arms. The discomfort can start during the day when you have been sitting for a long period of time, or at night when you lie down to sleep. It may subside after an hour or so, but it may be present for so long that sleep is disrupted. The discomfort of RLS can be described as an aching, creeping, tingling, crawling, pulling, searing, or bubbling sensation.

What Medications Aggravate Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms Causes & Treatments

By Jillian Levy, CHHC

Its estimated that restless leg syndrome affects more than one in 10 American adults every year . RLS is a condition characterized by uncomfortable feelings in your legs, giving you a strong urge to move them in order to find relief. Because symptoms tend to get worse overnight, RLS is associated with a higher risk for insomnia and daytime fatigue, plus increased use of sleep-aid medications, alcohol and caffeine.

Middle-aged women, including those going through or past menopause, tend to experience RLS more than any other population. Most people describe the symptoms of restless leg syndrome which can include experiencing jittery sensations, tingling, burning and aching in one or both legs as more annoying than actually painful. Some people equate the sensations associated with RLS as the feeling of bugs crawling up your leg. In other words, although its not very dangerous long term, RLS causes some downright unpleasant side effects.

The desire to quickly get RLS sensations to stop makes people twitch, jiggle or move their legs throughout the night, leading to poor sleep. The worst part is that moving the legs usually doesnt help RLS symptoms stay away for long they usually return pretty quickly, and the cycle continues.

Restless Legs Syndrome Medications

Medications are usually not required for mild or secondary restless legs syndrome other than supplements or OTC pain relievers. First-line treatments for chronic or severe RLS are dopamine agonists or gabapentinoids, anti-seizure drugs that can also relieve nerve pain. When all else fails, low doses of opioids can manage symptoms.

If you also have depression, you may be on a medication that worsens RLS symptoms. Dont stop it by yourself, but ask your doctor if another kind of antidepressant can work instead. Buproprion is an antidepressant that can help RLS symptoms in some cases.

People with RLS dont sleep as much, and less sleep is linked to depression, diabetes, and high blood pressure. But it is hard to treat high blood pressure without addressing the sleep problem, too. Unfortunately, sleep is often ignored in these patients.

Signs And Symptoms Of Restless Leg Syndrome

Symptoms of restless leg syndrome tend to get worse during the night when someone is sleeping, but they can also occur during the daytime when the person is awake. Sitting for long periods, laying down or staying in one sedentary position usually makes symptoms worse.

The most common restless leg syndrome symptoms include:

  • Sensations in the legs that are described as creeping, crawling, jittery, burning or aching. Most of the time, sensations are felt deep inside the calf muscles or in the feet, thighs and even arms.
  • A strong urge or feeling that you need to immediately scratch, move, jiggle or stretch the legs in order to make sensations stop.
  • Temporary relief from symptoms when you move the legs .
  • Involuntary leg twitches and jerks, similar to having a cramp . Leg twitches caused by night cramps are among the most commonly reported periodic limb movements due to RLS.
  • Getting poor sleep due to feeling uncomfortable and waking up often. For many people, RLS symptoms start soon after they fall asleep and persistent intermittently throughout the night, resulting in interrupted sleep, insomnia, and daytime drowsiness or fatigue.

One of the biggest problems associated with RLS is that it disturbs normal sleep and can lead to many complications associated with chronic fatigue and under-sleeping. It also causes many people to turn to prescription sleep-aid or pain-reducing medications, which pose a high risk for addiction, dependency and side effects.

I suddenly started with this RLS problem. Then I checked out this site. I quit the St. John’s wort I had been taking three times a day and the problem has subsided. I was taking the Research Grade as prescribed. So, It must be true that something that affects seratonin which, I believe tamps down dopamine will do this. It is scary. As movement disorders from medication can become permanent. I would stay away from Ldopa or the others that help RLS as they , as far as I can gather from reading about this up dopamine. Maybe wrong, but experience is the best teacher.

Trying to cope with mild depression and anxiety with upbeat thinking and exercise.

Once I took Celexa for six years and woke up one morning with my little finger on my right hand moving and it did not stop for days. I took benedryl finally and it stopped. But, needless to say, this scared me big time. Then I went to St. John’s Wort. Must be careful with that too.

I quit all meds and am trying my best to get by without. I know for some this is not easy.

Restless Leg Syndrome Vs Sciatica

  • Sciatica, also called sciatic nerve pain, causes pain running down the legs, usually from the lower back all the way to the feet. RLS and sciatic nerve pain are often confused.
  • The primary cause of sciatica is a pinched nerve or herniated disc in the lower spine running along the sciatic nerve. Other causes of sciatica are spinal stenosis, infection, a broken pelvis or thighbone, or a tumor.
  • According to Harvard Medical School, the biggest difference between these two conditions is that sciatica doesnt tend to get worse during sleep and then better again during the daytime, like restless leg syndrome usually does. Sciatica symptoms are also usually worsened from moving, coughing, bending, exercising, sneezing and physical activities that tug on the sciatic nerve.
  • Some choose pain-reducing medications or even surgery to correct sciatic, but less invasive treatment options can also be very helpful. Treatments for sciatica include chiropractic spinal adjustments or spinal manipulation, stretching, acupuncture, yoga, and massage therapy.

Precautions Regarding Restless Leg Syndrome

For some people, RLS gets worse with age, especially if underlying causes arent treated. Most of the time restless legs syndrome wont lead to a more serious health problem or pose any major risks, but its still important to keep an eye on progress of symptoms.

  • Dizziness and signs of low blood sugar
  • Fainting
  • Chronic fatigue thats severe
  • Numbness and tingling in your limbs thats severe
