Good & Bad Side Effects

Mucinex DM Review – Look What I Coughed Up!

Side effects occur from taking a medication but are not part of the intended outcome. For Mucinex, the intended outcome is a reduction in coughing and chest congestion. Anything else that occurs because of taking Mucinex is a side effect. We will now look at both good Mucinex side effects and bad Mucinex side effects.

Salt And Soda Rinse For Gummy Mouth

Some chemotherapy drugs can increase the acidity in your mouth, leading to thick saliva that can be very annoying. This rinse works well for “gummy mouth.”

1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons baking soda 4 cups of warm water

This rinse will help to neutralize the acid in your mouth and will help dissolve or loosen thick, gummy saliva. Don’t drink it, just rinse and spit it out.

What Are The Side Effects Of Mucinex D Extended Release

Mucinex D extended release tablets contain a combination of guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps loosen congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages.

When To Take Mucinex

Guaifenesin, the active ingredient in Mucinex, is available in both ‘extended-release’ and ‘immediate-release’ dosage forms.

Extended-Release

Brand name Mucinex products contain guaifenesin in 12-hour extended-release tablets. It is available in two strengths:

  • 600 mg per tablet
  • 1,200 mg per tablet

Mucinex tablets are ‘bi-layer’. One layer dissolves and absorbs quickly, for immediate relief, while the other layer dissolves slowly.

Mucinex extended-release tablets can be dosed up to every 12 hours.

There is no specific time consideration as to when you can take Mucinex . It should be simply taken as needed for symptom control, in the morning, afternoon or evening. The time you take it should not influence its effectiveness or potential side effects.

Immediate-Release

Guaifenesin is also available in immediate-release tablets, which last four to six hours per dose. Immediate-release guaifenesin is available in two strengths:

  • 200 mg per tablet
  • 400 mg per tablet

These can be dosed every 4 to 6 hours.

Again, just like the extended-release Mucinex products, these can simply be taken as needed, up to six times per day . You can safely take it at night.

What Symptoms Does It Treat

PPT

Mucinex, or guaifenesin, treats the symptoms of a cough and chest congestion caused by colds, allergies, infections, and other short-term respiratory sicknesses. While it controls the symptoms of these illnesses and offers temporary relief, Mucinex does not treat the cause. As mentioned before, Mucinex will not cure your illness or shorten its duration.

The Impact Of A Cough Or Cold On Sleep

It can seem like a Catch-22. Rest bolsters recovery from a cough or cold, but the symptoms often interfere with sleep. Whether you’re hoping to prevent the common cold, or just snooze better once one strikes, make sure getting sufficient rest is a priority. Fortunately, relatively simple steps can help you attain it.

If sneezing, congestion or coughing keeps you awake at night, you’re not alone. A 2012 survey investigating the Attitudes of Consumers Toward Health, cOugh and cOld found that nearly 60 percent, or two out of three, of the 2,500-plus respondents reported moderate to severe trouble sleeping during a cold. If you’re among the one in three American adults already struggling to get sufficient sleep, a cold could make matters worse.

Struggling to sleep isn’t only problematic during the night. It can affect your daytime alertness and ability to function normally. Respondents of the survey reported a more than 25 percent reduction in their productivity when they had a cold with or without a cough. Sleep deficiency can also cause fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating.

Precautions For Pregnant And Nursing Women

Because Mucinex is an FDA-designated Class C drug for pregnant women, the full effects of the medication on unborn babies have not been conclusively studied, and use during pregnancy is recommended only when the benefit outweighs the risk. Existing data does not show an association between Mucinex and birth defects, but there is no controlled data on human pregnancy currently available. Because of the lack of data surrounding Mucinexs effect on unborn children, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor before using the medication, even though it may be purchased over the counter. Although no studies exist that confirm that Mucinex passes through breast milk, the manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, the mother should make a decision to either discontinue nursing if using Mucinex or discontinue use of the drug. Nursing mothers should speak to their doctors prior to taking Mucinex.

Hope I’m doing this right, please bear with me.

I’ve searched previous posts on this, just can’t find the specific answer. I’m 3 sessions from the end of my radiation treatments for cancer at the base of my tongue. My biggest problem with side effects is, like many here, thick, nasty mucus!!

My radiologist suggested Mucinex so I bought the liquid, thinking it’d be easier to swallow. Yeah right! That stuff burns! So here’s my question:

Can Mucinex DM max be taken thru a peg tube? If taken thru a peg tube, will it be effective at cutting the mucus?

    Has anyone used this?

I’d like to hear from someone befor I give it a try.

    Thanx in advance

    Overdose And Missed Dose

An overdose of Mucinex can occur by taking another medication with the same active ingredient at the same time. We discuss this below when we examine Mucinex interactions. Talk to your physician about other methods to relieve a cough and congestions symptoms, such as using a humidifier, nose drops, sprays, and drinking more fluids.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you can when you remember. If you do not remember until you are close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.

    Causes Of Chest Congestion

We know that we need mucus to help our bodies function properly, but what determines how much mucus we produce? When our bodies are healthy, we produce the right amount of mucus needed to protect, moisten, and defend our airways. The mucus membranes that line your mouth, nose, throat, sinuses, and lungs are part of your bodys first defense against infection, keeping out dust, allergens, irritants, bacteria, and viruses. If we get an infection or are exposed to allergens or airborne pollution, our bodies can begin to produce too much mucus in an attempt to protect us from additional disease and irritation. When our bodies start to produce too much mucus, this is when congestion occurs. Mucus works best when it is at the normal levels in our body, so if it becomes too thick, dense, or dry, it is unable to do its job. When this happens, bacteria can start to grow, causing an infection. Its at this stage of an illness that youll start to notice symptoms like chest congestion, more colds, a wet or hacking cough, and extra congestion in the mornings. Coughing is the way our bodies try to break up the mucus in our lungs and expel it.
