How to track your sleep with your Apple Watch Apple Support

The AutoSleep Tracker app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep if you dont, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didnt wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.

The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bedjust tap Yes or No.

To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.

Before you use AutoSleep, youll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap Settings and, on the following screen, scroll down to the Configure section and tap Wizard.

Here, you see two toggles: I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality and If I Dont Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.

You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you dont wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time youre not wearing your Watch.

Tap OK to continue.

On the next screen, you can set a night hour, which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep bank and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

Think About The Battery

Heres where sleep tracking with the Apple Watch falls down somewhat. The battery needs charging on a daily basis, so there wont be any time for that if youre wearing it all day and night. Of course, you could set aside a different time to charge your Watch, if that works for your schedule. If you dont want to wear your Watch in bed, or if you have an older device, you could use a third-party sleep-tracking app. Bear in mind that some apps may require you to have your iPhone on the bed with you, which is also an undesirable place to charge it.

Sleep tracking using the iPhone is possible, but it comes with many compromises.

How To Edit Your Sleep Schedule On Apple Watch In Watchos 7

Once you’ve created a sleep schedule, you aren’t stuck with it. You can edit the sleep schedule at any time by following the steps below.

  • Launch the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
  • Tap the sleep schedule you want to edit.
  • Tap the wake up time to adjust the time you want to wake up.

  • Tap the Alarm On/Off switch if you want an alarm to toggle the alarm. When the switch is green, the alarm will be on.
  • Tap Sounds & Haptics to change the sound your alarm makes.
  • Tap the sound you want.

  • Tap the bedtime time to adjust what time you want to go to bed.
  • Tap back to return to the main Sleep menu.

  • You can use these steps to edit your sleep schedule whenever you want and as many times as you want.

    What If You Really Need Sleep Tracking

    Sure, theres an argument to be made about someone needing to keep a track of their sleeping habits, and considering the amount of attention Apple pays to making sure the Apple Watch is a great fitness companion , it seems like sleep tracking should be somewhere high-up on their to-do list for watchOS.

    Who knows, maybe Apple finally does bring sleep tracking to the Apple Watch with the Series 6 this year. Maybe. I dont think they should though.

    Before Apple implements sleep tracking in the Apple Watch, the company needs to figure out one of two things :

    • The battery needs to last much longer, or,
    • The watch needs to charge considerably faster than it does.

    See, if the battery on the Apple Watch lasted, say, 3 days, sleep tracking would be great. You wear your watch continuously for three days, including while you sleep, and then one night you let it charge. Sure you dont get sleep data for one night, but its better than not getting sleep data ever.

    Second, if the watch charged faster than it does, the current battery situation would resolve itself. You can wear the watch the whole day, sleep with it still on your wrist, and just charge it the next morning while you get ready for work .

    Thats wishful thinking, and while I certainly hope Apple will figure out some way to get this done, I wont hold my breath for it, and I will definitely not be happy about the Apple Watch based on my own hopes for what the future holds for this product.

    During my first week with Apple Watch sleep tracking, I also wore the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 to bed. I found my Apple Watch did a better job at recognizing when I wasnt sleeping at 5 a.m. two mornings in a row, once because my black Labrador Retriever wanted breakfast early and once because a thunderstorm rumbled both of us awake.

    Sleep tracking on WatchOS 7 is overdue, and it’s starting with bedtime guidance.

    It’s been almost five years since I first had a sleep study done at home. I put wires all over my face, wore a pulse oximeter on my finger and confirmed I had sleep apnea. I’ve used a CPAP machine ever since, and I’ve been interested in understanding how well I sleep and how to improve my rest. I’ve tried tons of watches, bed sensors and apps. Of all the smartwatches I’ve tried, the Apple Watch was conspicuously the only one that seemed to lack its own onboard sleep tracking.

    While sleep tracking was possible using other Apple Watch apps, Apple never entered the space formally, despite purchasing sleep-tech company Beddit in 2017. That’s changed with WatchOS 7, unveiled last week at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. It adds sleep tracking as an onboard feature, but you might be surprised at what sleep tracking on Apple’s watch does and doesn’t do.

    Apple’s Wind Down feature on the iOS 14 is part of the Apple Watch’s sleep experience, too.

    Change Or Add A Sleep Schedule

  • Open the Sleep app

  • Tap Full Schedule, then do one of the following:

  • Change a sleep schedule: Tap the current schedule.

  • Add a sleep schedule: Tap Add Another Schedule.

  • Change your sleep goal: Tap Sleep Goal, then set the amount of time you want to sleep.

  • Change Wind Down time: Tap Wind Down, then set the amount of time you want sleep mode to be active before bedtime.

    To reduce distractions before your scheduled bedtime, sleep mode turns on during Wind Down. Sleep mode turns off the watch display and turns on Do Not Disturb.

  • Do any of the following:

  • Set the days for your schedule: Tap your schedule, then tap the area below Active On. Choose days, then tap Done.

  • Adjust your wake time and bedtime: Tap Wake Up or Bedtime, turn the Digital Crown to set a new time, then tap Set.

  • Set the alarm options: Turn Alarm off or on and tap Sound to choose an alarm sound.

  • Remove or cancel a sleep schedule: Tap Delete Schedule to remove an existing schedule, or tap Cancel to cancel creating a new one.

    Apple, on the other hand, says it’s collecting data on other features instead. During Tuesday’s event, the company announced an Apple Hearing Study , a Women’s Health Study , and the Apple Heart & Movement Study. While these areas of study are important when it comes to overall health, a sleep study should also be part of the mixespecially since the Apple Watch already packs the sensors needed to track basic sleep metrics, and the iPhone’s Health app comes with a Sleep Analysis feature.

    If you’re still set on buying the Apple Watch Series 5, there are third-party apps that track sleep. But since they’re not native to the device, the analytics don’t factor in other metrics tracked by the watch. For a smartwatch that comes with a starting price of $399, it’d be ideal if it could paint a full picture of my overall health, sleep included, rather than just part of it.

    What Else Do I Need To Know About Sleep Tracking With My Apple Watch

    As with any form of Apple Watch tracking, sleep tracking works best if youâre wearing your Apple Watch on the correct wrist and comfortably. If the watch is too loose, the accelerometer might register too much movement from you, even when youâre asleep. Wear it too tightly, and youâre probably going to feel somewhat uncomfortable trying to sleep.

    As well as that, you may need to change when you recharge your Apple Watch. You need your watch battery to be at around 30% or more for it to track your sleep all night successfully. Otherwise, the Watch will tell you to charge it up beforehand.

    For those with the Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 6, this will be less of an issue, but older models will definitely need a solid top-up at some point before you head to bed. We recommend hitting your Stand goal for the day then sticking your Watch on charge for an hour or so before bed, such as when youâre unwinding reading a book or watching TV. That way, it should last the duration.

    Finally, consider buying a watch strap that will be more comfortable to wear in bed. Itâs not essential but if you need plenty of comfort while you sleep, it could help.

    Where To Find Your Apple Watch Sleep Graph

    The Apple Watch sleep tracker will put all your sleep stats in an easy-to-understand graph. It will also break it down by individual days to see when you go to bed and wake up. You can even see your average sleep duration based on the data it gathers!

    To see your sleep graph:

  • Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  • Tap Show More Sleep Data.
  • You’ll now see a more detailed screen that includes the sleep graph and other information.
  • Even if you don’t sleep in your Apple Watch, the time with your watch off and charging will be recorded as time in bed. Although, the days you wore your watch will be a darker shade of blue, while the days you didn’t will be light blue.

    How To Set Up Sleep Tracking On Apple Watch

    1. Ensure your Apple Watch is on watchOS 7 or later and your iPhone is running iOS 14 or later.

    2. In the Health app on your iPhone, set up Sleep. You can also go through this process on the Apple Watch itself in the Sleep app.

    3. Firstly, choose the duration of sleep – this is a Sleep goal but it isn’t tracked in the iPhone Activity app like your rings . We’ve chosen eight hours.

    4. Next, you set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake up. There are actually a bunch of options here, so go through them carefully. Do you need to set it for every day, or just weekdays.

    5. You’ll need to set a relaxation time before you go to bed – you can also choose to link this to a Siri Shortcut to do other automation such as turning off a light at home, for example. Wind Down can also be linked to a music playlist, for example.

    6. You can decide whether or not to set an alarm and how you want it to sound. Note that this won’t replace your existing alarms on Apple Watch .

    Your alarm will sound on your iPhone if you don’t have your Apple Watch on and on your Watch if you do have it on. You can fully configure the alarm sound as well. If your Watch is set to silent, it will just vibrate.

    7. You can see your sleep patterns in the Health app on iPhone – view by week or month. You can definitely see the gaps in my sleep here. As you can see, a small child is not conducive to meeting your sleep goal!

    Add Or Edit A Sleep Schedule

    To edit a Sleep Schedule, from the Sleep app screen select the desired option then edit desired settings. Note: To edit additional Sleep settings, from the Sleep app screen select Full schedule. Select Sleep Goal to edit your Sleep goal. Select Wind Down to set a time for Sleep mode to turn on before bedtime. To add a new Sleep Schedule, select Full Schedule> scroll to and select Add Schedule> set desired alert times and settings then select Add.
