Treatment For Sleep Apnea Anxiety
How can I get sleep if I have sleep apnea and anxiety?
CPAP treatment is the most effective way for healthy sleep in apnea patients, but itâs also a tough choice for a patient who also have anxiety.
This study also demonstrates that compliance to CPAP treatment can treat depression, sleep apnea and anxiety together.
The fear of using the CPAP mask, or having claustrophobic symptoms with the mask, can make the treatment difficult.
If you can, start using nasal pillows which are less intrusive than nasal masks or full face masks. The ResMed Swift FX nasal pillow is very simple, with only one strap across the cheek. This mask should be the first to try.
However, if you need to wear a full face mask and have claustrophobia, you can get accustomed with the mask by wearing it while playing a game in front of your computer or watching TV. Then you can wear it while sitting up reading. Finally, try to wear the mask when you read in bed.
Assessment Of Vestibular Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance
Evaluation of sleep disturbance was conducted using the Korean version of the PSQI and Insomnia Severity Index . These scales were completed at the first visit. The Korean versions of these scales were translations of the original English text into Korean. The degrees of severity of dizziness were evaluated using the Korean version of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory .
PSQI is a self-rated questionnaire about sleep quality during the last 1 month that consists of 18 items with a 4-point Likert-type response format . PSQI contains a 03 interval scale with seven components . Buysse et al. reported that the English version of the PSQI is highly reliable . The sensitivity and specificity were 89.6%, 86.5% for patients with sleep disorder, using a cut-off score of 5. The Korean version of PSQI also showed high reliability , but the best cut-off point was 8.5 .
ISI measures sleep maintenance difficulties, satisfaction with current sleep patterns, interference with daily functioning, noticeable impairment attributed to the sleep problem, and the degree of concern caused by the sleep problem with seven questions . The total score ranges from 0 to 28 and is rated from 0 to 4 for each item. A cutoff score of 15 has been used as the threshold for clinically significant insomnia and a score between 8 and 14 has been considered sub-threshold insomnia .
Dry Mouth And Drooling
Two contradictory findings may both suggest sleep apnea: dry mouth and drooling. Dry mouth often occurs when the nasal passage is blocked and mouth breathing occurs. This may be due to allergies, a deviated nasal septum, or even because of a cold. If you wake up with a dry mouth or sleep with a glass of water on your nightstand, this may suggest you are at risk for sleep apnea. Breathing through the mouth often leads to loud snoring and may contribute to the collapse of the airway in sleep. Somewhat unexpectedly, drooling may suggest the same situation. Drooling often occurs because the mouth is open during sleep, with saliva free to drip from the corners of the mouth onto a pillow. Therefore, both a dry mouth and drooling may indicate the presence of mouth breathing and risk for sleep apnea.

Try Using The Ramp On Your Machine
When you use the ramp on your sleep apnea equipment, your CPAP machine starts out at a lower pressure and gradually increases until it reaches your set pressure. Using this gradual technique can increase your comfort level, as well as help you get used to wearing your mask each time you put it on.
Always make sure to talk to your doctor before making any changes to your CPAP routine. Since the side effects of sleep apnea outweigh the CPAP side effects of using a CPAP mask and machine, its important to find a solution so you can wear your CPAP comfortably and consistently.

Isnt Sleep Apnea Just A Fancy Name For Snoring
Not at all. Snoring is that annoying sound that occurs when air passes relaxed tissues in your throat as you sleep. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a persons breathing repeatedly starts and stops during sleep. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but many who have sleep apnea do snore regularly and loudly. One in five adults suffers from at least mild sleep apnea it afflicts more men than women. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea , in which weight on the upper chest and neck contributes to blocking the flow of air. A less-common type, central sleep apnea , occurs when the brain fails to send regular signals to the diaphragm to contract and expand. CSA has been associated with brain stem stroke.

Heart Rate And The Severity Of Osahs
In the 62 patients, before nCPAP therapy, heart rate over the 24-h period was positively correlated with AHI during sleep . It was also positively correlated with the percentage time of arterial O 2 saturation < 90% during sleep . The degree of the reduction in heart rate after nCPAP therapy was positively correlated with the degree of the decrease in AHI during sleep . It was also positively correlated with the degree of the decrease in percentage time of arterial O 2 saturation < 90% during sleep .
Among the 15 patients whose heart rate was measured for 2 days before nCPAP treatment, heart rates did not differ significantly between the first and the second 24-h interval . This result was unaltered if the two patients who were receiving a beta-blocker were excluded from the analysis.

Can Sleep Apnea Cause Dizziness And Lightheadedness
Unexplained dizziness is a bothersome symptom for many. It can make it challenging to work, complete household chores, and pursue many favorite hobbies. There are many causes for dizziness, so if it is an ongoing concern, it should be discussed with a doctor. However, one common root cause of dizziness is sleep apnea.
When you are dizzy, you feel lightheaded and disoriented. The lightheadedness is the part of it where it feels like you are going to faint.
Most commonly, those who have sleep apnea and dizziness will feel it most severely first thing in the morning. You may be suffering from sleep apnea dizziness if you wake up disoriented and have to take a few extra moments to get your bearings before you feel steady on your feet and safe to walk. This is usually caused because the brain has been deprived of oxygen during the night and not functioning at 100 percent first thing in the morning, so trying to switch from the laying down position to an upright and moving position becomes troublesome.
At its most serious levels, this absence of oxygen is called hypoxemia, which can regress into hypoxia if left untreated long enough. When your body goes into hypoxia, vital organs begin shutting down due to a lack of oxygen. In aviation accidents involving cabin depressurization, for instance, hypoxia is frequently the cause of death. The absence of sufficient oxygen for breathing at high altitudes means vital organs quickly fail.
Sleep And Heart Health During Pregnancy
Pregnancy places additional strain on the heart and some women develop cardiovascular problems during pregnancy. High blood pressure, for example, can begin or worsen during pregnancy with potential complications for both the mother and her baby.
Insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep difficulties affect many pregnant women, and these issues have been associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular problems both during and after pregnancy. Ongoing research studies are working to identify ways to improve sleep during pregnancy with the goal of also reducing hypertension and other cardiovascular issues.

What Do We Know About Dizziness
Before we talk about sleep apnea and dizziness, lets get the basics out of the way.
Weve already said that dizziness is when you feel lightheaded or disoriented, vertigo is when the room is spinning. It turns out that both can involve inner ear problems.
There are many causes which include:
- circulation problems
- balance disorders such as vestibular neuritis and Menieres disease
Did you know that changes in air pressure has also been linked to dizziness?
It may also be the reason why people experience vertigo during weather changes.
Which brings us to an interesting connection to sleep apnea
Connection Between Sleep And Vertigo
Dizziness, spinning, and falling down are all symptoms of a condition called vertigo. If you suffer from these symptoms, you might be concerned that vertigo can hamper your sleep. To help you determine any relation between sleep and vertigo, check out this information about these seemingly distant disorders. It turns out vertigo and sleep have more in common than you realized.
Vertigo is more than just a famous movie made by Alfred Hitchcock. This condition causes you to feel extreme dizziness and a spinning sensation within your mind. You can even fall down as a result of serious vertigo, which can lead to dangerous accidents and additional injuries.
As for what causes vertigo, the Mayo Clinic states that benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most common cause. With BPPV, individuals have brief dizzy spells. The trigger for BPPV is a sudden movement of the head, such as when you sit down or turn your head. Treatment for BPPV is available at a doctors office, and can help you to avoid episodes of vertigo.
Falling Asleep With Vertigo
If you experience dizziness when you lie down to sleep, your vertigo could cause problems when going to sleep or getting up in the morning. To reduce the concern, take these precautions for sleeping with vertigo:
- Set a bedtime routine that allows your mind and body to reach a restful state before your head hits the pillow.
- Limit caffeine and alcohol for eight hours before bedtime.

Testing For And Treating Sleep Apnea
An easy-to-use, comfortable test will be shipped directly to your front door. After wearing the device for one night of rest, send it back. A qualified sleep physician will analyze the results. If you test positive, you may be prescribed a CPAP.
A continuous positive airway pressure device is the most effective way to treat sleep apnea, because it supplies a constant flow of air to give your body the oxygen it needs. This machine prevent oxygen deprivation so you can rest properly and get rid of sleep apnea headaches.
Aside from waking with a headache other sleep apnea symptoms include:
- Waking with a dry mouth
- Excessive daytime fatigue
Can Sleep Problems Cause Benign Positional Vertigo
A few days after my 3rd son Brennan was born, I suffered from classic benign positional vertigo. Looking back on the course of events, I had a eureka moment last night that literally kept me up in bed.
Benign Positional Vertigo is a well-described inner ear condition that otolaryngologists like myself treat all the time. The classic description is when you feel dizzy, like the room is spinning, just after a sudden head movement, either up or down, or side to side. The spinning will usually last a few seconds, and you may have residual nausea and imbalance for hours to days. Its typically preceded by an infection, head trauma, stress, or in many cases, no significant events at all .
The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is performed to make the diagnosis and the Modified Epley is then continued on to cure the problem if the Dix-Hallpike is positive. In my experience, the Epley maneuver works about 80-90% of the time to cure the problem instantly if the Dix-Hallpike is strongly positive. Its one of the more gratifying maneuvers/procedures that I perform.
Any infection, whether a common cold or sinusitis, causes swelling in the nose and throat which narrows the upper airway, which narrows the throat even further, leading to more obstructions, causing more reflux, leading to more throat inflammation and narrowing.

Other Tips For Better Cpap Therapy Experience
- Avoid using oil-based products if you place the mask on your face when it is fully covered in makeup or moisturizer, you might cause some issues with the mask. The oil from these products can build up in the mask, especially if you dont clean it regularly and properly.
- Try sinus medication if you experience nasal congestion, and generally nasal and sinus issues frequently, make sure to discuss this with your doctor. Ask for suitable sinus medication to reduce these side effects while receiving CPAP therapy.
- Adjust the pressure sometimes the pressure setting on your CPAP device arent suitable for you. Improper pressure levels can cause the device to push more air into your lungs than you can handle, resulting in air swallowing and lung discomfort. So, consult with your doctor about the pressure settings and let them help you adjust them for new ones.
- Adjust the mask straps sometimes the mask straps can be too tight, and contribute to skin irritation and rashes. Try to adjust the straps of the mask so that theyre not too tight or too loose. Try to make the mask straps secure, but also comfortable. This way you can avoid skin marks, irritation, even the feeling of claustrophobia and anxiety caused by the presence of the mask on your face.
