Q: Can Dieting Help My Sleep Apnea

Does Sleep Apnea Go Away With Weight Loss?

A: While its always good to eat a healthy diet, it wont directly help your sleep apnea. However, healthy eating can lead to weight loss, which may reduce the size of your neck circumference and decrease the amount of pressure needed to keep your upper airway open. Healthy eating can also give you more energy for exercise, which may also help you lose more weight.

Sleep Apnea And Cardiovascular Health

Sleep apnea affects a persons entire cardiovascular system in several ways. Each time a breathing lapse occurs, the bodys oxygen supply drops, triggering a fight or flight response. When this response occurs, blood pressure surges and heart rate increases, causing the sleeper to awaken and reopen their airway. This cycle repeats throughout the night. The cyclic rising and falling blood oxygen levels can cause inflammation, which in turn may lead to atherosclerosis which is associated with heart attacks, stroke, and high blood pressure.

Sleep apnea also elevates carbon dioxide and glucose levels in the blood, disrupts the part of the nervous system that controls heartbeat and blood flow, increases insulin resistance, and alters the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide. As a result, sleep apnea is associated with the following heart, lung, and metabolic problems, among others:

  • Hypertension
  • Atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias
  • Heart failure
  • Stroke and transient ischemic attacks
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Metabolic syndrome

Does Sleep Apnea Go Away After Getting Tonsils Removed

Dr. C confirms that having your tonsils removed can in fact improve your sleep apnea condition. This is a method of treating sleep apnea mostly for children, but it can also be effective in adults.

With CPAP being the most popular form of sleep apnea treatment, most patients with the condition will opt into the machine. However, if a child is suffering from sleep apnea, Dr. C tells us that CPAP is not a recommended treatment for them. This is because children are still in the growth phase of life and wearing the CPAP mask all night can potentially alter their growth pattern.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are done to remove both tonsils and adenoids primarily in children. This procedure can potentially improve sleep apnea in children.

How Many Hours Per Night Should Cpap Be Used

CPAP is unquestionably the most successful treatment available for sleep apnea. Unfortunately average use of CPAP is only 4-5 hours/night, not the recommended 7 1/2 hours a night. This can lead to deadly consequences for many reasons. The 25% of patients who wear their CPAP all night every night are not at risk.

Overcome Sleep Apnea By Losing Weight With Diet And Exercise

Sleep apnea is a condition that affects your breathing while you are sleeping, causing disruptions in your normal breathing patterns. If you have this condition, then you may snore loudly, have restless sleep or experience health problems in the morning. Some of the problems associated with sleep apnea in the morning include having severe headaches, still feeling tired or having a dry mouth. You can visit a physician who specializes in diagnosing sleeping disorders, and you may need to use a special breathing machine to keep your airways open while you sleep.

Sleep Apnea Treatment May Help With Weight Loss

If you have sleep apnea, then youve likely been told that you need sleep apnea treatment. One common treatment is CPAP therapy, which helps keep your airways open as you sleep. However, new research suggests that CPAP therapy may also help improve weight loss for patients with sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea treatment may help with sleep quality which may help improve weight loss.

An estimated 60-90% of those with sleep apnea are overweight or obese. Whats worse is that gaining even 10% of your baseline weight can make you six times more likely to develop more severe sleep apnea. Therefore, weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight is important if youre overweight and have sleep apnea.

Lose Weight To Reduce Sleep Apnea

In addition to using the continuous positive airway pressure machine, your physician will likely tell you to lose weight. Obese individuals are more likely to have sleep apnea because the excess fat in the body presses on the airways of the chest and neck. Researchers believe that losing only a small amount of weight can make a big difference in sleep apnea patients. An individual who weighs 200 pounds can benefit from a 20-pound weight loss. Scientific studies concerning weight loss and sleep apnea revealed that men with obstructive sleep apnea lost an average of six pounds from simply using a CPAP machine to reduce their snoring each night.

Sleep Apnea Just Lose Weight Itll Go Awayno Sleep Study Needed

Circumlocuting writes:

A few years ago I realized that my husband had sleep apnea. I would sometimes hear him stop breathing in the middle of the night and then make a horrible choking/gasping sound when he started breathing again.

Around the same time, my snoring was getting louder and louder . He said he never heard me actually stop breathing, but the volume of noise I produced at night was louder than anything hed ever heard me produce during the day, even when screaming at the kids. )

We were both in our late 30s and both obese, with BMIs of around 35. We knew that if we lost weight, our sleep apnea would probably improve, but after close to a year of failed attempts to lose weight, we realized we just needed to see our doctor and be checked for sleep apnea.

I had the first appointment with our GP. The doctor very helpfully told me, Well, I COULD send you for a sleep study . . . theyd get you set up with a CPAP machine that youd have to use for the rest of your life. OR, you could just lose weight.

I told him I hadnt had a lot of success with that and was concerned about being treated NOW.

He said that I were just determined enough to achieve a healthy weight, I could do it. He had another patient who had been obese, taking meds for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc., but one day he just determined he was going to achieve a healthy weight, and he did it. And I could too.

We no longer go to that GP.

Although three months of CPAP therapy produced only limited improvements to damaged brain structures, 12 months of CPAP therapy led to an almost complete reversal of white matter abnormalities. Treatment also produced significant improvements in nearly all cognitive tests, mood, alertness and quality of life.

Inactivity Due To Fatigue

Difficulty Losing Weight With Sleep Apnea

The second reason that Dr. C explains that can be a cause for sleep apnea weight gain is fatigue due to improper sleep patterns. When a patient is not getting proper sleep, it will cause them to feel tired during the day. This can cause them to be less active which can increase weight gain. If a patient is not exercising regularly along with overeating, this can be a recipe for weight gain.

If patients are chronically fatigued because of poor sleep, they are going to be less active during the day, leading to weight gain. Dr. Andy Ciesielski

Can Weight Loss Resolve Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is an extremely common health problem present in two to four percent of the general population. It has been linked to development of hypertension and is a risk factor for incidental development of stroke, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation .

Can Losing Weight Cure Sleep Apnea

Treating sleep apnea, like treating many diseases, starts with lifestyle and behavioral modifications. For most OSA sufferers, this includes working toward a healthy body weight. Weight loss reduces fatty deposits in the neck and tongue which can contribute to restricted airflow. This also reduces abdominal fat, which in turn increases lung volume and improves airway traction, making the airway less likely to collapse during sleep.

Losing weight can also significantly reduce many OSA related symptoms, such as daytime sleepiness. Irritability and other neuropsychiatric dysfunctions markedly improve as well. There is an overall improvement in cardiovascular health, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and in particular quality of life. Weight loss of just 10-15% can reduce the severity of OSA by 50% in moderately obese patients. Unfortunately, while weight loss can provide meaningful improvements in OSA, it usually does not lead to a complete cure, and many sleep apnea patients need additional therapies.

Sleep Apnea & Weight Loss

A CPAP machine is typically the go-to treatment for how to get rid of sleep apnea. CPAP, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure, is a machine that hooks to a hose and mask and is worn over the nose during sleep. The continuous pressure from the machine works to hold open your airway during sleep, allowing air to flow freely to prevent periods of apnea. In other words, it holds your airway open while you sleep so you can keep breathing.

The reason CPAP machines work so well is that generally, it is soft tissues in the neck, throat, and upper airway, along with the tongue, that relax during sleep and obstruct the airway. This obstruction is what causes you to stop breathing for several seconds or minutes while youre asleep. This type of sleep apnea is known as obstructive sleep apnea , and is the most common.

CPAP will not cure sleep apnea but can be an effective treatment if used properly.

Will Cpap Cause Weight Gain

Possibly, more studies are being performed to either confirm or deny that CPAP machines lead to weight gain. One thing to consider with CPAP use includes the patient’s diet and exercise habits to burn calories. It has been suggested that when you use your CPAP and no longer experience apneas during the night. As a result, your body doesnt burn as many calories because it doesn’t have to work to restore your airflow.

One study found that the weight gained during CPAP therapy was lean body mass , which in contrast to an increase in fat is a positive weight gain. Its associated with improving overall health and improved exercise compacity. Another study analyzed patients over the course of years to determine that there was no link to significant weight gain with long term CPAP use.

Does Sleep Apnea Go Away With Weight Loss

Sleep apnea does in fact have some correlation with weight gain and weight loss. Many patients are curious whether or not losing weight can improve their breathing during the night, and the answer is yes. If you lose a significant amount of weight, there is a possibility that your condition will improve with this lifestyle change.

That being said, not every case of sleep apnea is related to the weight of the patient. Somebody who has an average weight or even someone who is underweight can still suffer from sleep apnea. Many times, sleep apnea is caused by an anatomical obstruction of the airway.

Typically one of the only ways that sleep apnea is naturally cured is through extreme weight loss. Weight loss improves sleep apnea in many cases and can also resolve the condition in some instances. Dr. C

Sleep Apnea Cardiovascular Risk And Metabolism

Can I Cure Sleep Apnea With Weight Loss

Several studies have shown an association between sleep apnea and problems like type 2 diabetes , strokes , heart attacks and even a shortened lifespan, says Jun. Why this connection? For one thing, obesity is common in sleep apnea patients, and obesity greatly increases risks of diabetes, stroke and heart attack, he says. In most cases, obesity is the main culprit behind both conditions, Jun explains.

Still, its important to note that not everyone with sleep apnea is obese. Furthermore, evidence suggests an independent link between sleep apnea and diabetes. Our lab and others have shown that sleep apnea is associated with higher risks of diabetes, independent of obesity, and that sleep apnea can increase blood sugar levels, says Jun.

For people who are overweight or obese, weight loss is key for treating or avoiding sleep apnea. People who accumulate fat in the neck, tongue and upper belly are especially vulnerable to getting sleep apnea. This weight reduces the diameter of the throat and pushes against the lungs, contributing to airway collapse during sleep.

Women in particular should be careful as they age. While premenopausal women tend to put on weight in the hips and in the lower body instead of the belly, this shifts with time. Weight begins to accumulate in traditionally male areas like the tummy, and this leads to a greater chance of sleep apnea.

Jim had a few personal discomforts with the use of CPAP machine, but in the time that hes been medically cleared advancements have been made to CPAP therapy to improve user comfort. So, we will address the potential problems and solutions.

  • Learning to sleepJim didn’t enjoy using his CPAP mask, but maybe he didnt have the right one. There are new modern designs such as the AifFit F30 that has a weightless feel. It doesnt have a forehead strap with a soft, flexible frame and the mask creates an effective seal with minimal facial contact.
  • Loud MachinesMaybe in the past older CPAP machines may have made loud whirling sounds, and maks made you feel like Darth Vader, but times have changed. The Transcend Mini actually operates at 29 dBA, thats the sound of a whisper. Some masks also have built-in air diffusers to quietly disperse exhaled air.
  • TravelingAlright, traveling with anything has the potential to be difficult, but traveling with a CPAP is simple. They make travel CPAPs like the Z1 that weigh less than a pound. They can easily fit in any bag and often come with their own travel cases. Plus, because they are a medical device, they dont count as a carry on item. Go ahead travel with your CPAP and even use it to sleep on the plane.
