Scientists are increasingly linking weight gain and poor metabolism to sleep deprivation, so getting a good night’s sleep should be part of your health, fitness and weight-loss strategy. Sleep loss can lead to an increased prevalence of diabetes and obesity. We should all be aiming for 8 hours of sleep per day.;

8 hours is a worthy aim, but unrealistic for many . Between 6 and 7.5 hours is maybe a goal you’ll hit more often.

Because its battery life is limited , Apple recommends the Watch be charged every night. The Apple Watch’s battery life is much improved, however, so can last nearly three full days and two nights.

But that is not as impressive as Fitbit battery life that can last a week or more between charges.

With watchOS 7 Apple adds a Sleep app to the Series 3, 6 and entry-level SE Watches. It helps you establish a regular bedtime routine and keep track of your sleep trends night after night.

Apple Sleep uses motion sensors, heartbeat sensors, and microphones to detect micro-movements to track of how deeply users are sleeping. Watch will sync with the iPhone or iPad to show visualisations of the periods of wake and sleep, plus a chart showing weekly sleep trends.

Comparing Apple’s Sleep app to Fitbit’s is revealing, as my colleague David Price describes in his otherwise glowing Apple Watch 6 review. Despite loving the latest Apple Watch, he still replaces it with a Fitbit at bedtime!

The 3 Best Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Apps To Use Before Watchos 7 Arrives

The Apple Watch 6 and watchOS 7 are a pair prepared to bring sleep tracking mainstream, but that doesnt mean you need to wait until this fall to start monitoring the quality of your snooze.;

Apples own Sleep app has been in the pipeline since first-generation Apple Watch debuted, ;Apple VP of Technology Kevin Lynch told CNET earlier this week. But as some Apple Watch users saw Fitbit and Garmin wearables supply sleep data, they turned to the watchOS App Store for software of their own.;

While the best sleep apps for smartphones strive to help adults get enough shuteye, using a smartwatch or fitness tracker can offer insights that a phone by your bedside cannot. Apples upcoming sleep tracking app, for example, will wield the Apple Watchs built-in accelerometer and heart rate sensor to detect subtle movements that signal respiration while users snooze.

When the public watchOS 7 beta launches later this month, well be going hands-on with the all-new Sleep app to see if our Apple Watch can help us establish better bedtime schedules. Well also take a look at how the Wind Down feature contributes to a more peaceful transition to dreamland.;

The Autosleep Tracker App

The AutoSleep;Tracker app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep; if you dont, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didnt wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.

The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bedjust tap Yes or No.

To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.

Before you use AutoSleep, youll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap Settings and, on the following screen, scroll down to the Configure section and tap Wizard.

Here, you see two toggles: I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality and If I Dont Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.

You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you dont wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time youre not wearing your Watch.

Tap OK to continue.

On the next screen, you can set a night hour, which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep bank and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

Tap OK to continue.

Tap OK to complete the wizard.

    Setting Up The Jawbone Up2

    Setting up the Jawbone UP2 is supposed to be a simple process:

  • Attach the tracker to the charger to activate it
  • Use the iOS app to pair;the tracker to your iPhone
  • I plugged in my Jawbone UP2 and the LEDs lit up as described in the sparse documentation that comes with the device. I didnt immediately pair;the UP2 with my iPhone, but instead, I let it charge for;an hour.

    Pairing;the tracker didnt work as the app couldnt find a;nearby UP device. The following troubleshooting steps didnt resolve the problem either:

    • Disable and re-enable Bluetooth on my iPhone
    • Restart iPhone
    • Delete and re-install Jawbone UP app
    • Try to link tracker to my wifes iPhone
    • Attempt soft-reset of tracker

    It turned out, my Jawbone UP2 froze and couldnt even be reset using the method described in the;support article.;After I had spent an hour trying to get the Jawbone UP2 to work, I gave up. I was annoyed;and wanted to return the band to;Amazon.

    The next morning I decided to give it another shot, and to my surprise, the soft reset worked, and I could pair;the tracker to my iPhone.

    What Can Apple Watch Do That Fitbit Cant

    The Apple Watch really does make a great addition to your iPhone. There are many apps that you may have on your iPhone that also have apps on the Apple Watch, which gives you some additional capabilities that the Fitbit does not provide.

    While there are Fitbit devices that can show you notifications, even text or call, it really does not compare to the Apple Watch text and calling that you can fully operate separate from your phone

    The Apple Watch especially stands apart from some of the other Fitbit models that do not have built-in GPS, music control, etc. The Fitbit Sense is really the Apple Watches biggest competitor, but they are still quite different.

    Apple Watch Sleep Tracking: What It Does And How To Use It

    – In the latest watchOS 7 update Apple enables you to track sleep using the Apple Watch. watchOS 7 works with Apple Watch Series 3, 4, 5 and the new Apple Watch Series 6 we’re expecting. It isn’t compatible with Series 1 or 2.;

    Apple Needs To Up The Apple Watchs Battery Life

    Everything said and done, I have to say I really love the Apple Watch, and its not just based on the merits of this watch as a device , its also because I am deep into the Apple ecosystem right now, and the Apple Watch works seamlessly with everything else I use.

    Heck, Im not even mad about the battery life because I dont really have a use for sleep tracking. That said, I would love not having to charge my watch every night, because that will be a nightmare on vacations or weekend trips. There are some tips that you can use to improve battery life on Apple Watch Series 6, but they are not enough if you want to get multi-day use out of it.

    Look, I dont know what Apple is planning to do with the Apple Watch Series 6 when it launches this fall, but I am hoping that if the company decides to add sleep tracking, they will also make major improvements in the battery department. Until then, Im happily sleeping off with my Series 5 on its charging cradle overnight, right along with my iPhone.

    Apples Wind Down Is Better Than Its Sleep Tracking

    Though Im not thrilled with the sleep tracking functionality, Apple did a nice job with a related set of watchOS 7 and iOS 14 features called Wind Down. Rather than just telling you how much you slept, Wind Down provides a holistic approach to weaning you off your phone at night, softly encouraging you to settle down before a full Do Not Disturb regime kicks in.

    If you prefer to use apps to relax, you can create iOS shortcuts specific to settling down, such as turning on a music playlist or podcast, opening an app for reading or journaling, or accessing apps for yoga and meditation. These shortcuts will appear on the iPhones Lock Screen so youre reminded to use them, and you can also initiate a watchOS Wind Down sleep mode that begins however many minutes you prefer before your scheduled bedtime.

    These kinds of features may seem simple to implement, but theyre actually thoughtful, OS-level integrations that show how sleep tracking functionality could become part of a larger sleep management experience for some users. I might want to keep using Wind Down even in the absence of sleep tracking.
