The Charge 4 tracks your steps, distance, floors climbed, calories burned, and Active Zone Minutes, a new metric earned for time spent in fat burn, cardio, or peak heart rate zone. Women can use the Fitbit app to track their periods and fertile windows, and view where they are in their cycle from their wrist.

Thanks to the Charge 4s GPS, you can leave your phone at home and see your real-time pace and distance on your wrist. The GPS works with seven different types of activities: running, walking, bike riding, hiking, interval workouts, and a new outdoor workouts mode for things like kayaking, surfing, and skiing.

To use the Charge 4s GPS, just select one of the compatible workouts, wait for the GPS signal, then tap Start. I tested this feature for a 23-minute walk/run and it worked perfectly.

During a run, the Charge 4 shows your distance and pace on the screen, as well as how long youve been going. When you reach fat burn, cardio, or peak zone, it will vibrate and show an encouraging notification on the screen. Out of the 22 studies, 10 assessed early-generation nonsleep-staging Fitbit models in comparison with PSG in estimating sleep parameters 1 of these studies involved performance of Fitbit models when applied to individuals of two different cohorts , thereby increasing the number of possible comparisons to 11. Eight of the 10 potential comparisons reported significant overestimation of TST by Fitbit versus PSG of between 6.5 and 88.1 minutes, while the two others found nonsignificant overestimation. Five of the six potential comparisons reported significant underestimation of WASO by Fitbit versus PSG of between 5.6 and 44 minutes, while one other reported nonsignificant underestimation. Six of the eight potential comparisons observed significant overestimation of SE by Fitbit versus PSG of between 1.8% and 17.4%, while two others reported nonsignificant overestimation. A total of 5 comparisons evaluated SOL, finding no significant difference between the two methods of appraisal.

Spotify support has been a top request among Charge device users, so its nice to see it on the fourth-generation model. To set up Spotify, go to the Charge 4 section of the Fitbit app, select Apps, then select Spotify. From there, press Settings and log into your Spotify account. Note that you must have a Spotify Premium subscription to use the music streaming service on Fitbit.

The Spotify app on the Charge 4 lets you browse your recently played music play, shuffle, and skip content like songs and choose the music output. The app is a nice addition to the Charge 4, but its controls are somewhat basic. You can’t, for instance, click into a playlist and select a specific song you want to hear. You also need to have your phone connected.

Another nice upgrade to the Charge 4 is that Fitbit Pay now comes standard on all models. On the Charge 3, the mobile payment system was limited to the pricier Special Edition model..

With Fitbit Pay, you can leave your wallet at home and pay right from your wrist. Fitbit Pay works with Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, PNC, SunTrust, Wells Fargo, and many other banks and card issuers .

To set it up, you first need to set a four-digit PIN code for your Charge 4, then enter your credit or debit card information and billing address. When you set up Fitbit Pay, the app informs you that merchants will only see a device-specific number, not your real card number, a nice privacy assurance.

How To Improve Your Readings

Unlike taking more steps to help you get fit, theres no obvious way to improve your sleep readings. During the week, Fitbit offers some suggestions on ways you can potentially improve those numbers.

  • Limit alcohol consumption. While consuming alcohol before bed may help you fall asleep, it can also contribute to you waking up during the night.
  • Create a regular bedtime and wake-up time. If having a regular bedtime and wake-up time is a challenge for you, set your Fitbit so it reminds you to head to bed at the same time each night and then gently wakes you in the morning with a light vibration.

This method of using a device to track movements in order to measure sleep is called actigraphy.

Those little glowing lights to the left of the charger port are the pulse reader. This could be a killer feature for the Fitbit Charge HR, and it also gives the device the two initials on the end of its name. However, it’s actually kinda sketchy.

It works fine for giving a rough idea of your resting heart rate. However – and I hate to break this to you, if it’s news – resting heart rate means nothing if you’re not a really intense athlete.

And if you’re using a Fitbit Charge HR as opposed to a Garmin Forerunner 920XT or similar, I’m going to go right ahead and assume you’re not an intense athlete.

When it comes to tracking active heart rate, there are two major problems and one lesser one.

The first is the fact that the screen turns off after about two seconds, so you can’t see your heart rate, and hence you can’t tell what heart-rate zone you’re in, when doing any kind of demanding activity. So it’s not much use.

The second is that if your arm gets sweaty, it sometimes doesn’t work. Now, if Fitbit would like to tell me how I can stop my arm getting sweaty under a band whilst working out, I’ll be delighted to do so. As I am human and therefore, alas, sweat when hot, this is an issue.

Thirdly, weight lifting specifically seems to also make it not work. So if you like to pump iron, maybe this isn’t for you.

      Fitbit Charge 5 Specs

      No matter how you slice it, the Fitbit Charge 5 is expensive. There are plenty of trackers out there that offer similar features for much less money. Not to mention that the high price of the Charge 5 puts it in dangerous territory of being priced like a smartwatch, making it more of an in-betweener than maybe it should be.

      Obviously, the Fitbit Charge 4 is one of the easiest alternatives to recommend. Fitbit doesnt sell it anymore, but its still easy to find for $50 cheaper than the Charge 5, and it does pretty much everything that device does, including Fitbit Pay support. It also has Spotify controls and an altimeter, which the Charge 5 lacks. You lose out on EDA scanning and the full-color display, though.

      The Fitbit Inspire 2 is another good fitness tracker from Fitbit. For about half the price of a Charge 5, youll get a very basic tracker that excels at standard fitness, health, and sleep tracking.       Workout Tracking With Heart Rate :

      Now that we established in the previous section how the workout mode works, well go ahead and layer in the heart rate component thats only available on the Charge HR.

      When you start the workout, the only difference between the Charge and Charge HR that youll note is that one of the screens now displays your current HR, such as below:

      But how accurate is this? Wellits mixed. In general, I find it very much the same as the Fitbit Surge GPS unit. The optical sensor gets within the ballpark, but doesnt accurately track quick HR changes such as during intervals. For example, look at the following run where I had both longer intervals and a series of short 30-second hard sprints . Ive plotted it against a traditional heart rate chest strap:

      Now youll see at the beginning the Fitbit actually tracked better thats because I likely hadnt wetted my HR strap and it took a few minutes to catch . But, after that point, you can see the HR strap tracks my intervals beautifully, whereas the Fitbit Charge HR struggles quite a bit and is rather variable.

      If I look at spinning , its not really that much better. You can see that it generally trends in the right direction but hardly matches it. In fact, its kinda all over the place. Note that the chest strap will appear more blocky but note the scale its only a handful of beta . Whereas with the Fitbit Charge HR it was a bit more variable.

      Fitbit Charge Hr: The App

      While not as in-depth as the WithingsHealth Mate app, or as open as the Jawbone one, the Fitbit Charge HR’s app isclean, simple and easy to use. It’s also quick to sync, with no frustrating pairingproblems.

      When you open the app, you’re presented with all your data from the day,including steps, heart rate, distance travelled, calories burned, stairsclimbed, amount of ‘active minutes’, bursts of stopwatch captured activity andsleep.

      There are plenty of metrics to sink yourteeth into, and that’s without the additional food tracking, food plans andweight tracking options which require manual daily inputs a step too far for us.

      Any metric can be tapped to show historicaldata, as well as weekly totals. That’s especially useful for ‘active minutes’ which isthe amount of time spent in the day with your heart rate elevated. Upping thistotal means you’re getting fitter.

      Delving into the app further will revealplenty of controls, where you can fine tune the device to your dominant ornon-dominant wrist, or turn on the caller ID notifications.

      You can also challenge yourself to beatcertain step goals in the challenges tabs, and even invite friends toparticipate, too. It’s a good idea, although we were disappointed by thechoice of goals. Each of the four challenges simply involves walking more,not burning more calories or racking up more active minutes of exercise. Thoseseem far more meaningful, and thus far, don’t exist within the Fitbit app.
