Garmin Introduces Vivosmart 4: Slim Activity Tracker With Advanced Sleep Tracking Through Pulse Oxygen Sensor
Garmin has been making serious strides to provide more details on sleep quality and this latest activity tracker includes four sleep stages along with blood oxygen saturation gauging.
A couple of months ago, Garmin rolled out support for advanced sleep monitoring that includes awake time, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM stage. While my new high end Garmin Fenix 5 Plus supports this functionality, it is great to see Garmin launch the affordable Vivosmart 4 for the masses.
The only other Garmin device currently with the Pulse Ox sensor to measure blood oxygen saturation is the highest end Fenix 5X Plus. The new Vivosmart 4 has this sensor, but rather than focusing on high altitude training monitoring, the sensor is being used to help Garmin better define sleep quality.
The Vivosmart 4 is available in multiple colors with metal trim accents in silver, gold, and rose gold. It is safe for the pool and shower with a battery life of up to seven days.
It has a redesigned Elevate heart-rate sensor, abnormal heart rate alerts, VO2 max support, all-day stress tracking with relax reminders, and more. Basic smartwatch notifications are provided and you can even reply with preset messages if you are connected to an Android phone.

Garmin Quietly Introduces Automatic Sleep Detection To Existing Activity Trackers
Over the last few days Garmin has enabled automatic sleep tracking on all of their sleep capable activity tracker devices. They did so not as part of any firmware update that you have to install, but rather on their backend platform that automatically recognizes when you went to sleep and how many hours of sleep you got.
For example, last night I used the Garmin Vivoactive with the new functionality. Normally, I’d have to tap this fancy little button:
Except last night , I don’t bother to. Instead, I just fall asleep once I’d declared e-mail bankruptcy for the night. And according to Garmin, that was about 2:05AM:
Which, based on my rough recollection of the evening , is pretty much correct. Then, 5 hours and 51 minutes later, at 7:56AM I woke up according to Garmin Connect. That’s about right, I had whacked the snooze alarm starting about 10 or so minutes earlier, before heading to my laptop to start presenting to people in Asia on a conference call at precisely 8:00AM.
Now you won’t notice much else different in terms of the graph itself. It’s still what I’d classify as kinda-not-useful, mostly just looking like waves in the middle of the ocean – and having about as much bearing on my life as waves 2,000 miles off the coast of Nouakchott, Mauritania:

In thelast several years there has been an explosion of smart wearable devices thatare capable of measuring steps, activity, heart rate, and other biometric dataabout the wearer. An estimated 117 million smart wearables will be sold in 2019,with that number rising to 233 million in 2022 . Actigraphy has been the gold standard for manyyears to estimate sleep stages using wearables. Actigraphy uses accelerometerinformation to estimate wake/sleep periods of the user . Many modernwearables also measure heart rate and heart rate variability by using optical photoplethysmography. PPG uses light emitted into the skin to measure pulse rate by observingsmall changes in the intensity of the reflected light due to capillary blood volumechanges as the pulse pressure wave transits the sensor field of view. The useof actigraphy, heart rate, and heart rate variability together provides theopportunity to estimate more than just wake/sleep, such as light ,deep, and REM stages of sleep.
The neural network used in thecloud was an adaptation and simplification of the architecture of Zhao .Over 60 features were computed on the device. Seven more features were computedon the cloud over the entire night’s data.

- Make sure you set your birth date in Garmin Connect–in the Garmin Connect app, select Garmin Devices > Device Settings or User Settings. Make sure to save those updated settings and then sync your device before hitting the sack!
- Check for any updates for your device and the Garmin Connect App
- Clean and dry your arm before putting on the device
- If you recently worked out using your Garmin, make sure you rinse the device with fresh water after each workout
- Wear the device at least 2 hours before bedtime and keep it on while sleeping
- Make sure the device’s heart rate monitor is on
- Keep the device fit snug around your arm, wrist , or your preferred body location

Garmin Vivofit 4 First Take: Great Battery Life But No Heart
The Vivofit 4 is a relatively straightforward activity tracker, although there are plenty of options in the Garmin Connect app. The main draw is its year-long battery life.

The most significant feature of the £69.99 Garmin Vivofit 4 is probably the year-long battery life from its user-replaceable SR43 batteries. This means there’s no need to carry a charge cable. As a regular wearer of activity trackers since they first became available, this has been a very long time coming, and it’s fabulous that it’s finally arrived. How nice it is to go away for a week and not have to pack a proprietary charge cable for my wristband.
The general build quality is fine, if a bit on the basic side. The one-piece rubbery band is snug enough on the wrist, and my review sample was black with lime-green specks and spots. Plain black and white options are also available, both with a textured finish.
The 8-colour screen is very small at just 11mm and 88 pixels square. The display is always on, so it’s easy to see the time whenever you want to — provided you can manage with the small screen .
Upload data from the Vivofit 4 to the Garmin Connect app, where you can view and share a wealth of fitness information.
Garmin has not given the Vivofit 4 the ability to relay handset notifications. This isn’t a feature I’ve ever used in an activity tracker, so I didn’t miss it here. Frankly, if a text comes in, I’ll pick up the phone rather than look at my watch.
