Which Tests Of Sleep
We dont test how accurately a wearable can track sleep stages. However, for those that do offer sleep tracking, we look at how detailed and easy to understand the sleep data is and how plausible the sleep durations seem.
If you do buy a wearable for sleep-tracking, make sure you pick one thats light and comfortable enough to keep on your wrist all night. Theres no point buying one thats big and bulky, as youre simply not going to want to wear it. Bear in mind that fitness trackers are smaller and often more conformable to wear than smartwatches, so this might be a better bet, and use our fitness tracker reviews and smartwatch reviews to find a model that ticks the boxes.
My Garmin Is Not Tracking Sleep Troubleshooting Steps
There are some requirements that need to be met in order for the Garmin on your wrist to track sleep. Make sure to check all of these.
Also worth noting, you must let the watch sync fully with Garmin Connect in order for the sleep card to be shown. Sometimes it is worth doing more than one sync if the data does not appear.
Another thing to keep in mind are possible sleep disorders. If the Garmin is having problems identifying your sleep, perhaps theres a chance your sleep is not good enough. Admittedly, it is an outside chance but perhaps you have a sleep disorder. The accelerometer, heart rate sensor do their job well enough, but if your sleep patterns are disturbed they will be rendered useless.
What follows are requirements that need to be met in order for the sleep card in Garmin Connect to appear:
1. The device must be your Preferred Activity Tracker
In order for the sleep statistics to appear, you must wear your preferred activity tracker during the night. This is because information from your Preferred Activity Tracker will always have preference to data from other watches.
The setting can be found in Garmin Connect by going into Settings> Garmin Devices. It can also be tweaked via the website dashboard.
If you only have one Garmin registered on your account, you can skip this step. It should automatically be marked as your Preferred Activity tracker.
2. Make sure the heart rate monitor is switched on
4. Have you set the following in Garmin Connect?
Which Offers The Most Value
These two are on the older side of fitness trackers, but they still both come with excellent hardware and features that anyone can still use today. The great thing about these two is that they are often on sale, and you can undoubtedly score sweet deals on these. They are likely to be half priced than retail so, no matter what you get, you will definitely get a lot of value out of them.
You can never go wrong with Garmin wearables since they are well made and trusted by fitness buffs everywhere. However, between the two, there is definitely a clear winner when it comes to which one offers the most value for your money.
It is clear with its extra features, especially stress tracking, that it is the Garmin Vivosmart 3. It is also the slimmer and sleeker of the two, so you will not have a hard time matching it with your outfits. It is also the more affordable one between the two, giving you the absolute bang for your buck.
So, if you are looking for an affordable fitness tracker that you can get for a fantastic deal, go for the Vivosmart 3.

Can Garmin Instinct Wake You Up When You Are In Light Sleep
Garmin Instinct cant wake you up when you are in light sleep because it doesnt have a built-in smart alarm feature. Other Garmin watches dont have this feature either.
However, you can use third-party apps like SmartWake PRO to have a similar function with some of them. But some users have complained about having issues when using this app. They claim, for example, that it drains the battery or interferes with the body battery feature.
This function is available on a few other watches on the market, such as the Fitbit Ionic and Fitbit Versa series, and it works like this:
You set the alarm, the device tracks your sleep stages, and sets off the alarm during your light sleep, near the time you designated. This way, its more likely that youll wake up in a pleasant mood.
The Perfect One For Your Needs
Fitness trackers, especially the band types, are very much alike. They do not have a large enough screen to be full fledged smartwatches, but they do have the sensors that can track all of your activities and fitness stats. In the case between the Garmin Vivosmart 3 and the Vivosmart HR, they are pretty much similar.
If you are looking for a device that will track your overall health and fitness levels, any of these two will do the job for you. The Vivosmart 3 can surely offer you a bit more like stress and automatic workout tracking, but apart from that, you will get the same stats from both.
Any of these devices will definitely do and are perfect for your fitness tracking needs, but if you want the extras that the Vivosmart 3 provides, then go for it.

Whats A Pulse Oximeter
The Pulse Oximeter takes periodic readings of your blood oxygen levels during the night, and can tell if your blood oxygen is dipping too low.
Heres some important facts to know about blood oxygen:
So, what causes oxygen to drop during sleep?
Most of the time, oxygen levels can drop if theres a blockage of the airway, created by tissues in the windpipe that relax during sleep. Such a blockage prevents air and valuable oxygen from reaching the lungs.
If this is happening, a condition like Sleep Apnea might be in play. Sometimes other respiratory conditions, like COPD or Emphysema can cause a drop in blood oxygen too.
How can you tell if you have Sleep Apnea?
Youll need to see a doctor and undergo a sleep study in order to know for sure, but the Vivosmart 4 can help you see if you have a problem in the first place.
This is why wearables are the future
Did you know that millions of Americans go on with their life with undetected Sleep Apnea? Imagine the millions of Americans forcing a smile every day not knowing why they are constantly fatigued. Wearables are great because they help provide the answers to our burning health questions, giving us amazing feedback and insight into our bodies.
Garmin Vivosmart : Activity Tracking
At its most basic, the Vivosmart 3 tracks your steps and heart rate through the day, giving you an on-device readout of your beats for the last hour, including the highest and lowest points. Generally speaking, optical heart rate monitors are much better at 24/7 heart rate tracking than they are at higher-octane activities. With the Vivosmart 3 I’ve found day-to-day heart rate tracking to be pretty good. My resting heart rate has been generally accurate and has kept in line with the Fitbit Alta HR, which I’ve been wearing on the other wrist. Often I find the on-display reading is higher, but Garmin’s algorithms seem to balance things out in the app.
Step tracking has also been good, but as ever, as long as it’s not wildly off the mark it’s less use comparing results to other devices than it is just seeing how you vary day to day, as the algorithm is going to remain fixed. That said, I found it kept very close to the Alta HR, tending to come in just a little under by the end of each day.
Another way Garmin is pitching this as more of a health-and-wellbeing device is in stress tracking. This measures your heart rate variability to determine how stressed you are, with a score between 0 and 100. You can also swipe left to see a tiny graph of your stress levels for the past hour, and if you feel a bit bowed down under the weight of it all, you can kick off Relax Timer, Garmin’s guided breathing feature.

Why Is This Blog About How Does Garmin Measure Rem Sleep Important
As discussed on how Garmin measures REM sleep, it uses a combination of certain sensors such as the accelerometer and the Heart Rate optical sensor to track sleep cycles. However, remember that it is important to make sure your devices heart rate monitor is on, and the device fits comfortably, not too tight or too loose to get the best readings.
Moreover, we have talked about how REM sleep is very important because it stimulates areas of the brain that helps us consolidate learning, memories and is also associated with the increased production of proteins. However, Garmin tracks other sleep cycle stages that we go through during the night that are also very important and contribute to our overall health.

Optimize Your Bodys Energy
Body Battery energy monitoring on vívosmart 4 uses a combination of stress, heart rate variability , sleep and activity data to gauge your bodys energy reserves at any moment, so you can plan your day to optimize times for activity and rest. A higher number indicates youre ready to be active, while a lower number suggests you might need to relax and rest a bit before tackling a workout. Body Battery can also help you make sense of patterns throughout your weeks, so you can understand how the past few days have influenced how youre feeling today.
How Does Garmin Monitor Sleep
Garmin and other major smartwatch makers generally use two sensors, the optical heart rate sensor and the accelerometer, to figure out whether youre asleep or not.
About five minutes after you sleep, your heart rate starts to drop below the average levels while youre awake. So, when the accelerometer shows that youre not moving and the HR sensor shows your heart rate has fallen, they know that youre asleep.

Garmins Newest Vivoactive 3 Smartwatch Adds Music Improved Sleep Tracking
The Vivoactive 3 Music feels like the closest thing to the Fitbit Ionic.

Garmin Vivosmart Review: The Fitness Tracker That’s Also A Smartwatch
The niche audience that is willing to wear a wrist device that needs to be charged periodically will want a smartwatch, which offers more tangibleadvantages in the form of notifications, control over smartphone functions and a more watch-like feel. Most smartwatches have some basic fitness tracking functionality as well, so they serve the purpose.
But what if the fitness tracker can be a smartwatch as well? That’s where the Garmin Vivosmart comes in. The device is a fitness tracker first, but there’s the helpful addition of notifications and music control when paired with a smartphone. It builds on the Garmin Vivofit with a few design tweaks as well. The question is: how good is the Vivosmart at doing its job? We find out in our review.
Setting up the band isn’t the simplest of affairs. It needs to be paired to an Android or iOS device with Bluetooth 4.0, or a PC. This allows the app to aggregate data – the device itself has a small screen and can’t show you detailed information on fitness/sleep tracking. The app also maintains the continuous Bluetooth connection needed to send notifications from your smartphone to the device.
Smartwatches are not meant to replace your phone, they just offer an extra display and some functions in a convenient location. With that in mind, the Vivosmart does a fair job of pushing your alerts to you. It’s nowhere near as good at doing this as a dedicated smartwatch. However, it’s much more handy than most plain fitness bands are.

Garmin Vivosmart : Smart Notifications And Battery Life
Like almost every other wearable out there with a screen, the Vivosmart does notifications. But unlike some others, it supports notifications from all apps on your phone, and you can also use its basic forward, back, play and pause buttons to control your music. Generally as with most other fitness trackers I find the screen too small to read messages on, but if it’s a case of knowing whether you’ve got a text from someone important or just another Snap from that friend who just discovered Snapchat, it can be useful.
As for battery, Garmin promises up to five days and I’ve had no problem hitting that. In fact I’ve actually squeezed out a day more from it. As ever, it depends on how you’re using it, but five days is easily managed.
Fitbit Versa 3 Vs Garmin Vivosmart : Looks And Battery Power
When it comes to low-key aesthetic and basic health and fitness tracking, Garmin Vivosmart 4 has you covered. This slim fitness band is available in multiple colors and features a bright, easy-to-read display. The display is only on when you need it. It auto-adjusts to ambient light levels when it’s on, so it’s visible in bright sunlight.
If you want more customization, the Fitbit Versa 3 comes with hundreds of different watch faces and all of your favorite apps. Plus, it has the look of a watch, while the Vivosmart still looks like a tracker. However, it’s pretty thin and discreet.
When it comes to battery life, Garmin Vivosmart 4 takes the cake overall. It will give up to seven days of battery on a full charge depending on usage. However, it doesn’t offer quick charging. You can give the Fitbit Versa 3 a full day’s charge in just 12 minutes, and it delivers up to six-plus days of battery life, depending on your usage. Keep in mind that if you operate your watch in GPS and music mode a lot, it will drain the battery a lot faster. Still, a quick charge makes up for it either way.

The Charge 3 can determine your heart rate, calories burned, and peak zones for your exercises.
On the other hand, Vivosmart 4 can approximate oxygen levels through a wrist sensor. While not nearly as accurate as medical devices, it is an excellent choice for home users.
Heart Rate Variability is emerging as a massive thing, especially in the biohacking spheres. And its somewhat a surprise that Garmin has incorporated it into the Vivosmart 4. The HRV technology determines the level of your preparedness for the day when you wake up in the morning by measuring your pulse inconsistencies to determine if youre stressed.
If the HRV shows you arent fully relaxed, you probably arent ready for the day yet.

What Else Can The Garmin Vivosmart 4 Do
The Garmin Vivosmart 4 is an outstanding example of multi-functional wearable technology capable of doing lots of amazing things.
Did you know
Not only does the Vivosmart 4 track your oxygen levels, it also tracks your SLEEP STAGES!
What the heck are sleep stages?
During the night, youll drift in and out of periods of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep.
Light Sleep: This is where youll spend most of the night. In light sleep, youre easily awakened, and your body is hard at work cataloging memories and emotions.
Deep Sleep: This is the sleep stage where your body repairs damaged cells, and its also the stage where you grow. Youll normally spend time in all 3 stages.
REM Sleep: This is the stage where dreaming takes place, and where the magic of the brain happens. Youre processing memories and clearing out the clutter, and youll need REM sleep to feel rested and restored in the morning.
The sleep tracker is able to determine how many times you drift into your most productive sleep stages during the night. When you wake up, youll have an accurate report of how productive your sleep was the night before.
