Making The Switch: Fitbit Or Apple Watch

If you are looking to only own one of the two options , you need to figure out if what you mainly want is a smartwatch with impressive technology or an all around fitness and wellness tracker. If you are looking for a smartwatch, Apple really does have some of the most impressive technology on the market. The variety of apps and features that come with the Apple Watch are really great. However, if you are looking for an all around fitness and wellness tracker, right now the Fitbit is probably your best bet, especially the Sense which has some of the strongest tech that Fitbit has to offer.

    Where To See Your Readings

To see your specific sleep results, you log in to the Fitbit app on your iOS or Android device and sync your Fitbit. The app that tracks your sleep is the same one you use to see your steps. When you do, youll see a brief rundown of your results in the sleep tile.

You need to have slept at least three hours for Sleep Stages to work. It also doesnt work if you wear your tracker loose on your wrist or when its running low on battery power.

If you want to see your readings, tap on the sleep time number to go to the sleep dashboard. From there, you can see each stage of sleep represented in a graph form that breaks down how much time you spent in each sleep stage and how close you were to your overall sleep goal for the day.

Scroll down to see your sleep results for the day and your average amount of sleep for the week. Tap on any specific sleep section to bring up an hour-by-hour explanation of how you slept and which sleep stage you were in at a given time. The 30-day average and benchmarks show how your sleep compares to other people your gender and age.

What To Consider When Purchasing A Sleep Tracker

Fitbit Versa 2 review: Inching towards greatness

Well break down some of the top things to look for when purchasing a sleep tracker. While all of these factors matter to a certain extent, some may not be high priorities for you. Assessing what you want in a tracker can help you hone in on the most important aspects.

Sleep Tracking: Sleep trackers capture an array of data that may include heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration, snoring, time awake, time sleeping, sleep interruptions, and body temperature. Some may also monitor room temperature, humidity, noise level, and light. Since trackers vary in what sleep-related factors they detect, shoppers should pay attention to the specific product details to find an option that collects the information that interests them most.

Sleep Analytics: Sleep analytics use the data from sleep tracking to delve more deeply into sleep quality and patterns. They may provide detailed charts to show you how your sleep has changed over time, overlay multiple sets of data to show you how different factors are linked, and provide you with a daily sleep score. Wearable trackers can also link your daily activity levels to the quality and duration of your sleep.

Other Features: Sleep trackers often come with additional features, like fitness tracking, GPS, coaching, and integrations with other apps. These components may make your device more versatile, insightful, or convenient, but they can also increase the price-point.

Love Wearing Your Fitbit In A Clip

If you prefer to wear your Fitbit in a clip during the day, make sure you place your Fitbit on your wrist and change its setting to on-wrist to capture sleep data when you prepare for bedtime.

If you dont care about your sleep stage information, then you can continue to wear your Fitbit on a clip throughout the day and night.

Just remember that your sleep information will only include time spent asleep, awake, and restless.

What Can Fitbit Do That The Apple Watch Cant

The Fitbit, especially the Fitbit Sense, has far more fitness tracking capabilities than the Apple Watch does, and it goes beyond sleep tracking. The Fitbit Sense has a tracker that tracks your stress level through out the day and will give you recommendations accordingly. It also tracks your skin temperature and blood oxygen levels.

All of these things, combined with the more common fitness tracker features, really give you a complete picture of your health and wellness, beyond just the physical. The skin temperature specifically, even tracks slight changes in your temperature to help give you warnings that you might be getting sick.

What You Can Do With Fitbit Sleep Information

Sleep monitoring is designed to help you assess if you’re sleeping a healthy amount, and to improve your sleep.

You can use the information to look for trends, like if you consistently don’t get enough sleep, or sleep restlessly and wake up often during a night’s sleep.

It’s also useful for spotting changes in your sleep. If you usually sleep well but have started to see a change in the quality of your sleep cycles, that might be an indication something is wrong, and you can try to change your sleep habits or have a discussion with your doctor.

Your device’s setting can record your sleep in either “sensitive” mode for extremely detailed sleep reporting or “normal” mode for a more basic idea of your sleep patterns. Note that if you use a Fitbit device with heart-rate tracking to detect your sleep stages, this setting doesn’t apply.

You are not just talking about not getting sleep stages, but not getting sleep detected at all. Is that correct?

Manually Adjusting The Fitbits Sleep Log

  • Tap on the three dots.
  • Select the option to edit.
  • Adjust the times you went to sleep and/or woke up.

    Fitbit Inspire 2 Review: Features

The Fitbit Inspire 2 lacks GPS and we mention that quickly because it’s a big downside if you intend on using it as a fitness tracker. While the tracker offers 20 goal-based exercises much like its bigger sibling, the Fitbit Versa 3, don’t count on tracking where you’ve actually been with it. On the plus side, it does retain SmartTrack which automatically recognises your workouts and records them for you. For the most part, it’s reasonably accurate too although we did notice the Fitbit Inspire 2 mistakenly think a brisk walk was an outdoor cycle for a few moments.

Alongside the exercises profiles is Fitbit’s Active Zone Minutes system. This tracks your heart rate and checks if you’ve reached the fat burn zone or your cardio peak depending on what you’re doing. It’s a good way of helping you push yourself a little further in a responsible way. You don’t need to set it up either with the Fitbit Inspire 2 automatically monitoring this.

Other features include stress management tools which encourage you to track how you’re feeling so you can see if there are certain mental health pressure points during your day and week. Alongside that are guided breathing sessions to help you feel a bit calmer when you need it.

Don’t count on music playback or Fitbit Pay here. You’ll need to pay the extra for the Fitbit Charge 4 instead if those features are essential to you.

    Fitbit Premium Sleep Features

The premium Fitbit service comes with many perks, sleep features included. It gives you a more detailed score breakdown, an explanation of why it matters, as well as tips on how to improve your sleep. However, the two most important metrics Fitbit Premium gives you access to are Sleeping heart rate and Restlessness.

They can give you valuable insight into what is giving you sleep troubles. Your sleeping heart rate, for example, should typically be lower than your resting heart rate during the day. If it climbs during your REM sleep stages, it might mean you were having nightmares even if you dont remember them the next day. On the other hand, restlessness gives you an idea of how much you toss and turn in your sleep. The less you toss and turn, the better your quality of sleep and the more rested you feel on the next day.

Together, these two metrics make up the Restoration score another Fitbit Premium-exclusive feature. It gives you a better idea of how peaceful your sleep was.

What Is A Fitbit Versa Lite Anyway

The Fitbit Versa Lite is a smartwatch that tracks exercise, steps, calorie burn, sleep, female cycles, heart rate, and more. Dont Tell The Fitbit App You Are Going To Bed

All wrist-based Fitbits automatically sense when you are sleeping when wearing your Fitbit to bed. So there is no need to tell the Fitbit app you are going to bed or starting sleep.

To get a detailed reading of the sleep stages, do not select Begin Sleep Now inside the Fitbit app when you go to bed.

Also, dont tap on Im Awake when you get up.

For whatever reason, when you tap these notices in the Fitbit app, your Fitbit does not reliably track your sleep stages. Why? We dont know!

However, taping these app features does still track your sleep in terms of time awake, restless, and asleep.

We recommend that you allow your Fitbit to automatically track your sleepthat seems to be the best way to get all your sleep data, including sleep stages.

Plus, you dont have to do anythingso its one less thing to do before sleep.

Sync Your Fitbit With The App

$199 Fitbit Versa 2 with Amazon Alexa, Sleep tracking, Spotify/Pandora/Deezer, 24/7 heart rate

Its important to sync your Fitbit after waking up to see your sleep statistics in the Fitbit app.

So if youre missing your previous nights sleep information , make sure you sync before thinking something is wrong. It may not be!

You can manually sync your Fitbit by tapping the Sync Now button in the Fitbit apps device menu.

    Fitbit Inspire 2 Review: Verdict

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is a good fitness tracker providing you know you’ll be content with the basics. At this price range, it offers much of the functionality you’ll need but it’s more of a general wellness device than one aimed at fitness enthusiasts.

If you want to go phone-free or track exactly where you’ve been, you need something like the Fitbit Charge 4 to benefit from these features. However, if you simply want to track your heart rate and how many Active Zone Minutes you’re achieving each day, the Fitbit Inspire 2 has a lot to like about it. That goes even more so when you consider how well it tracks your sleep, stress levels, and even other basic essentials like allowing you to log how much water you drink each day.

So, it all comes down to why you’re considering buying a fitness tracker. If you’re an active runner or cyclist, consider something with a built-in GPS. Depending on your budget, that could be the Fitbit Charge 4 or even an Apple Watch Series 6.

For those on a budget though that simply want to keep an eye on the core basics to enriching your life, the Fitbit Inspire 2 still scratches that itch pretty well. If you can find it at a discounted price, it’s even more appealing.

    Check Heart Rate Settings

Your Fitbit combines heart rate and movement data to develop a more accurate picture of your sleep cycle.

And seeing sleep stage information depends on your Fitbit getting consistent heart rate information.

When your Fitbit cannot access consistent heart readings, you get a sleep report that only shows the basic informationtime asleep, awake, and restless.

Additionally, you wont see sleep stage info when you sleep for less than 3 hours.

While Fitbit turns heart-rate tracking on by default, its a good idea to check that you didnt accidentally turn it off.

Also, occasionally the Auto setting does not workso we suggest you set your heart rate using the ON position rather than auto.

There is no way to turn off heart-rate tracking on Fitbit Sense or Fitbit Versa 3, so you can skip this one.

To turn on your Fitbits heart rate tracking

    • On your Fitbit, open the Settings app > Heart Rate and if off, tap to turn the setting On. If its already on, switch it off, wait a few seconds, and switch it back on.

For Fitbit Alta HR and Fitbit Charge 2, turn on heart-rate tracking in the Fitbit app

  • Open the Fitbit app and tap the Today tab.
  • Tap your profile icon or picture.
  • Choose your Fitbit device from the list.
  • Tap Heart Rate and tap to turn the setting to On. If its already set to on, switch it off, then sync your device. After syncing, switch it back on and sync again.
