Sleep Watch is a free app that focuses on health. It uses your Apple Watch to track your sleep automatically and employs artificial intelligence to help track, analyze, and improve your sleeping habits. One of the coolest functions of the Sleep Watch app is sleeping heart rate dip analysis. Every night it will tell you how much your heart rate went down while you slept. Generally, lower dips are considered better , because they tend to indicate more restful sleep.
Every morning, the app will ask you how rested you feel. If there is anything unusual about your sleep, it will also ask you what you did differently. In my experience, I noticed that on days I exercised more or did a physical activity right before sleep, I experienced a much lower dip than on nights when I drank caffeine or was more sedentary. The easy-to-use interface and holistic health focus of this app makes it one of the best free options.
Update Your Full Schedule
You can also turn off your full schedule as needed. In the Sleep app, tap Full Schedule, then tap Sleep Schedule to turn your sleep schedule off or on.
What Data Will You See
As I mentioned before, the Sleep app will show you the information you need about your sleep.
You can view the data from either your iPhone, using the Health app, or on your Apple Watch, on the Sleep app. Both will first show you how much you slept and how much time you were just in bed.
This is just to show you how much sleep are you actually getting every night. Youll also see your night compared to the night before, and how close you were to your personal sleep goal. This is where the app becomes a bit competitive and it sounds like youre trying to beat your highest score from the night before.
Besides your sleep, the Apple Watch also tracks your heart rate while you sleep. This is more useful than you might first think. If you have a heart condition, suffer from stress, or even if you have a nightmare, the Sleep app will help you determine if you need to create a better bedtime routine or even go to the doctor.

What Do You Need To Use Apple Watch Sleep Tracking
You probably already know, but youll need an iPhone and an Apple Watch if you want to track your sleep.
Youll need to update your Apple Watch and iPhone to watchOS 7 and iOS 14 respectively. You can download these updates right now, but keep in mind that theyre in beta, so they might have a few bugs.
Still, there are many great things coming to watchOS 7 and iOS 14, so it would be worth it if you try it out.
Fortunately, watchOS 7 is coming to the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, and Apple Watch Series 5, so you wont have a problem if you have an older Apple Watch. Keep in mind, though, the Sleep app might consume your battery life, so older models might have a hard time keeping up at night.
And dont forget, you can install iOS 14 on an iPhone as old as the iPhone 6s, so theres a high chance you can try it out right now.
Edit Your Sleep Schedule On Your Apple Watch
If you need to update your sleep schedule, you can make changes to your full schedule or for Next Wake Up Only. With Next Wake Up Only, the changes you make apply only to the following day. Changes made to your full schedule apply to all future days.
If you’re up before your scheduled Wake Up time, you can exit Sleep Focus. Turn the Digital Crown to unlock your Apple Watch. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Sleep app icon.

Alarm modes on the Watch appThe “No alarm, only sleep analysis” option is not available on the Watch at this point in time due to restrictions within the Watch OS. But if this changes, we will hopefully be able to implement this as well.
Do you record snoring when using the Watch?When using the Watch app, we will not be able to detect snoring as we analyze your sleep via movements, detected via the accelerometer in the watch. If you want to detect snoring, you will have to stick to the phone app for now.
Whats the battery drain then?Not much. 10-15%, depending on what else is going on in your Watch during the night.Why no complication?So far, we got no strong use case for it. But Watch development will continue and a solid complication is part of it.

Okay But What About The Battery
I have had absolutely no trouble with battery life, but I set up a relatively strict but easy charging routine to make sure my Watch always has a charge. It goes like this.
At night, when I sit down on the couch with my wife and pup to watch a little TV, I put my watch on its charger. The Watch charges in less than an hour, so as long as I leave it on the charger for a little while, I get a full charge and I’m once again good to go.
Really, the only thing necessary is the added discipline of remembering to charge it for a short time. You could charge it while in the shower. You could charge it when you first sit down at your desk at work. Or you could charge it while you watch Star Trek reruns. No matter, it’s not hard as long as you incorporate charging into your daily schedule.

What Is Apple Watch Sleep Tracking
In the past, many devices such as Fitbits and Garmins have been able to automatically track your time asleep and then provide you with insights on how well you’re resting. The feature only came to the Apple Watch last year with WatchOS 7, and it’s immensely useful once you get started.
The Apple Watch tracks sleep via its built-in accelerometer motion sensor. It uses it to identify if you’re moving around or when you’re still enough so that it believes you’re asleep.
Like any device, it’s not perfect as if you happen to stay very still during the day, it may get confused, but it’s reasonably accurate so it’s a great starting point for judging your sleep pattern.
The Autosleep Tracker App
The AutoSleep Tracker app tracks your sleep in two ways. If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, the app automatically calculates your sleep if you dont, the app calculates your sleep based on the time you didnt wear the device, and when you first access your iPhone the following morning.
The initial setup process asks if you wear an Apple Watch to bedjust tap Yes or No.
To change this setting later in the AutoSleep app, tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.
Before you use AutoSleep, youll want to configure it here, as well. To do so, tap Settings and, on the following screen, scroll down to the Configure section and tap Wizard.
Here, you see two toggles: I Wear My Watch to Bed and Want to Track Sleep Quality and If I Dont Wear My Watch to Bed I Want to Track My Sleep Based on the Time the Watch Was Not Worn.
You already set the first option in the initial setup process, but you can change it here. If you dont wear your Watch to bed, enable the other toggle, and the app will track your sleep based on the time youre not wearing your Watch.

On the next screen, you can set a night hour, which is the hour before you close your eyes for the night. It only offers one-hour increments between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m. The idea is to help you keep a positive sleep bank and force yourself to stick with a consistent sleep schedule.

How Can You Make Sure Your Apple Watch Is Tracking Sleep
Apples Sleep app also allows you to track sleep from your iPhone, which is based around the bedtime schedule that you will have to create when you set up the Sleep app. This is synchronous: whether you set it up on the Apple Watch or iPhone first, it should automatically sync with the other device and activate Sleep during your scheduled bedtime.
To make sure your Apple Watch is recording sleep, look for the Sleep app on your home screen . Where To Find Your Apple Watch Sleep Graph
The Apple Watch sleep tracker will put all your sleep stats in an easy-to-understand graph. It will also break it down by individual days to see when you go to bed and wake up. You can even see your average sleep duration based on the data it gathers!

Accuracy Is A Positive
The biggest positive I noted is a sense developed over time and in consultation with others who have been testing the feature that Apples sleep tracking data is mostly correct, even if theres not much of it. My Watch appears to be properly extrapolating whether Im asleep rather than just in bed based on sensor data, including some lack of movement, certain wrist positioning information, heartbeat scans, and perhaps external factors. The aqua bars and gaps lined up temporally with my nightly sleeping recollections, down to roughly the minute I fell asleep. Two friends and my kids have all had the same experience.
As a father, Im already fretting when I see multiple brief interruptions in my kids sleep bars when theyre sleeping at another location. If this is the future of health tracking, I can imagine several reasons Apple and clinicians, including privacy-concerned ones might be concerned about presenting too much data, now and going forward. But in a health setting, users should have the ability to choose how much data they feel comfortable seeing, rather than being told that little or no data is being presented to shield them.

The app is designed to do two things: to let you know about the quality of sleep youre getting, and to use that information to detect the optimum time to gently buzz you awake so you bound out of bed full of joy and optimism for the beautiful day ahead.

Edit Your Sleep Schedule
Tap Open Sleep Options in Health to open the Health app, where you can turn on the switch for Sleep Schedule. Tap the Edit link under Full Schedule and set your usual times for going to sleep and waking up. You can also set different times for different days, such as one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends.
Under Additional Details, tap the entry for Sleep Goal and set the number of hours and minutes that you hope to sleep. Tap the entry for Wind Down to select the amount of time for winding down before bed. Tap the entry for Wind Down Shortcuts to set up any shortcuts youd like to apply during Wind Down. Finally, tap the entry for Options to confirm the options you set in the Sleep app and to set up a few more.
The Best Sleep Tracking Apps To Download For Your Apple Watch
The Apple Watch finally has its own built-in sleep tracking but it’s a very basic affair. If you want more data about your slumber, you’ll need a third party Apple Watch sleep app.
The beauty of the Apple Watch is that there’s a rich ecosystem of third party apps, which expand the feature set beyond the standard watchOS experience. So although Apple hasn’t natively added sleep tracking, there’s no shortage of apps to fill the void.
Apple has enabled the sleep tracking experience to be a little easier. There’s a Bedtime mode that will put your watch into a do not disturb mode between certain hours, and stop the smartwatch from blinding you with the screen wake backlight.

What Else Do I Need To Know About Sleep Tracking With My Apple Watch
As with any form of Apple Watch tracking, sleep tracking works best if you’re wearing your Apple Watch on the correct wrist and comfortably. If the watch is too loose, the accelerometer might register too much movement from you, even when you’re asleep. Wear it too tightly, and you’re probably going to feel somewhat uncomfortable trying to sleep.
As well as that, you may need to change when you recharge your Apple Watch. You need your watch battery to be at around 30% or more for it to track your sleep all night successfully. Otherwise, the Watch will tell you to charge it up beforehand.
For those with the Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 6, this will be less of an issue, but older models will definitely need a solid top-up at some point before you head to bed. We recommend hitting your Stand goal for the day then sticking your Watch on charge for an hour or so before bed, such as when you’re unwinding reading a book or watching TV. That way, it should last the duration.
Finally, consider buying a watch strap that will be more comfortable to wear in bed. It’s not essential but if you need plenty of comfort while you sleep, it could help.
