Prednisone Increases Your Risk Of Infection

5 Medications That Can Cause Insomnia | Insomnia

Infections are more common in people taking prednisone because it suppresses your immune system. This makes it harder for your body to fight off infection. In some circumstances, prednisone can help pre-existing infections, particularly those caused by yeasts or fungi, to spread.

Symptoms of an infection may also not be as obvious or typical while you are on prednisone. While you are taking prednisone, you should take common-sense precautions to reduce your risk of infection such as washing your hands often and avoiding people who are sick, especially those with viral illnesses such as or .

Tell your doctor straight away if you develop any sort of infection, including eye infections or candida infections, while you are taking prednisone.

Prednisone Dose Is Causing Lack Of Sleep

  • Dr. keith Roach

Dear Dr. Roach I have a medical condition that currently requires me to take 60 mg of prednisone per day, resulting in insomnia. I get approximately five hours of sleep per night. Sometimes Im able to take a one-hour nap in the afternoon. Is there anything I can do to reduce the insomnia? M.H.S.

Answer Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-system suppressor that is used for many conditions. It can cause some degree of insomnia in 50 to 70 percent of those who take it, but the higher the dose, the more likely the insomnia.

It sounds like crazy advice, but many of my patients have had luck following my recommendation to take the prednisone immediately before bedtime. Prednisone takes time to work, and some people are able to fall asleep before the effects of the medicine kick in.

Unfortunately, others have medical conditions that require them to take prednisone twice daily. This is more effective, but its more likely to cause side effects, including insomnia.

Dear Dr. Roach I have never had shingles, nor chickenpox. I could find no record of it, even in my baby book. Do I need to have the shingles shot? I am over 70. C.S.

Coping With The Insomnia

Even when the dose of dexamethasone was reduced, I still had sleep problems and just tried to cope as best I could.

I tried to stay calm, and remind myself not to stress out when I had difficulty sleeping. I did simple breathing exercises to take my mind off any discomfort and help me relax.

I made a concerted effort to eat healthy food, avoid stimulants and heavy food in the evening. And I went out every day for some fresh air and daylight, even if it was just for a short walk in the park.

Essentially, I just tried to manage my insomnia the same way I would do if I wasnt having chemotherapy.

Looking back, I dont think theres a lot more I could have done to improve my sleep other than taking me off the dexamethasone altogether.

I didnt take any sleeping tablets, as I already felt up to the hilt in medication. So largely I just put up with it and tried to remember that I was going through all this to try to cure me of cancer.

And fortunately, Im still all-clear ten years later. July 2021 marks a decade since my last treatment, so its a major milestone.

My advice to anyone experiencing sleep problems during chemotherapy is to talk it through with your oncologist. At the end of the day, theres a reason they use it but they still might be able to help you with your sleep problems or other side effects.

Insomnia From Cortisone Shot

Guest over a year ago

I had a cortisone shot on the 24th of December. It is over two weeks later and I am not sleeping. Some nights zero sleep, some nights and hour here or there, and only one night in the two weeks did I actually get about five hours straight.Anyone have any suggestions on what might help me as the doctors will not give me anything and state that it has nothing to do with the shot. Well, I have not EVER had any trouble sleeping in my 44 years. This started the day I got the shot. I have tried Vicatin, Advil PM, Ambien and Lorazepam . Nothing has worked. Also, anyone who has had this happen to them, how long did the insomia last???? Is there a chronic insomnia treatment? Please help…I can’t live like this..

Stop taking other people’s pills and pills that aren’t meant to address sleep issues. Go see a doctor to work out this problem, whatever the cause. Lest you think I don’t understand, I have had a sleep disorder for 18 years which accompanies my fibromyalgia and have experienced many consecutive sleepless nights and even weeks or months at a time with only 3-4 hours sleep in 24 I know it’s miserable and frustrating. I also know first-hand that doctors aren’t always helpful but they’re a place to start and a better option than ignorantly taking OTC meds or other people’s prescriptions.

We find it astonishing that some prescribers do not warn patients about the possibility of psychological side effects brought on by prednisone and friends. Even a short-course of high-dose steroid can precipitate symptoms. And not telling patients about gradual tapering borders on bad medicine. Psychological reactions such as insomnia and irritability are common, but they are certainly not the only prednisone side effects. Some of these adverse consequences, such as osteopenia, diabetes or glaucoma, appear only after long-term use of the drug. Others, such as confusion, high blood pressure or a drop in potassium, can occur on a shorter time frame. The most serious prednisone side effects that may happen within a week or two of use are dangerous blood clots , ulcers and infections.

Healthy Sleep Habits with Prednisone – #1 side effect tweeted

Prednisone and depression are connected because this anti-inflammatory medication can cause depressive feelings as a side effect. The medication can also lead to , which may be a precursor to depression. Additionally, discontinuing prednisone quickly may cause patients to feel down or without energy. Another possible connection between depression and prednisone is that depressive states may exist with conditions, like , that the steroid treats.

In general, prednisone is known for its action on moods. It can cause mania, rage, and sudden shifts into low moods. Some researchers suggest it can induce bipolar states, which can last as long as patients use the drug. Usually, short-term use of this steroid is more associated with rage, mania or hypomania than it is with low moods. Patients who take this medication for longer periods, such as for chronic conditions, may be more likely to directly experience the connection between prednisone and depression.
