Instead, their body and voice perform their dreams while they remain asleep.

    Less than one percent of people are estimated to have REM sleep behavior disorder. It usually begins after age 50, and the disease is associated with other neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinsons disease, Lewy body dementia, and multiple system atrophy. Symptoms often worsen with time. The condition usually requires treatment because it increases the risk of injury to oneself and their bed partner.

    What Are The Types Of Narcolepsy

    There are two major types of narcolepsy:

    • Type 1 narcolepsy . ;This diagnosis is based on the individual either having low levels of a brain hormone or reporting cataplexy and having excessive daytime sleepiness on a special nap test.
    • Type 2 narcolepsy . ;People with this condition experience excessive daytime sleepiness but usually do not have muscle weakness triggered by emotions. ;They usually also have less severe symptoms and have normal levels of the brain hormone hypocretin.

      A condition known as secondary narcolepsy can result from an injury to the hypothalamus, a region deep in the brain that helps regulate sleep. ;In addition to experiencing the typical symptoms of narcolepsy, individuals may also have severe neurological problems and sleep for long periods each night.

    What Treatments Are Available

    Although there is no cure for narcolepsy, some of the symptoms can be treated with medicines and lifestyle changes.; When cataplexy is present, the loss of hypocretin is believed to be irreversible and lifelong.; Excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy can be controlled in most individuals with medications.;

    The following may be warning signs of a sleep disorder:

    • consistently taking more than 30 minutes to fall asleep
    • perpetual fatigue and irritability during the day, even after getting seven or eight hours of sleep a night
    • waking up several times in the middle of the night and remaining awake, sometimes for hours
    • frequent and long naps during the day
    • difficulty concentrating at work or school
    • falling asleep at inappropriate times, mostly when sitting still while watching television or reading
    • waking up too early in the morning
    • loud snoring, breathing, or gasping noises while you sleep
    • an irresistible urge to move your legs, or a tingling or crawling feeling in the legs, particularly at bedtime
    • requiring a stimulant such as caffeine to keep you awake during the day

    What Causes Sleep Disorders

    Sometimes the cause is unknown.

    There are also some factors that can contribute to sleep problems, including

    • Caffeine and alcohol
    • An irregular schedule, such as working the night shift
    • Aging. As people age, they often get less sleep or spend less time in the deep, restful stage of sleep. They are also more easily awakened.

    Nightmares are a common sleep disorder which can be easily diagnosed by the history and symptoms experienced by the individual. It is defined as recurrent awakening episodes from sleep with disturbing orientation due to dysphonia dreams. It has been described in sleep disorders in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition along with its diagnostic criteria.
