Sleep Tracking on Galaxy Watch Active & Active 2

If the Sleep Tracker is currently operating on an Apple Watch, it can automatically log sleeping information. After each sleeping session users can receive a helpful report. Because the program works automatically, watch owners can avoid the potential hassle of having to remember to set the sleep function each night. That can be very useful for those who tend to be forgetful before bed each night. Interestingly enough, the app also works for naps during the day.

The after snooze report includes duration and periods where the user was still or moving. For those who tend to exist in a state of semi awareness each morning, it can also note the moment you actually get out of bed. As part of the analysis process, you can manually add notes like cups of coffee or other factors that impact your sleep.

Does The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Support Sleep Tracking

If you’re thinking about buying the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, you’ll be glad to know it offers detailed sleep tracking. While some wearables only offer the basics in this area, you’ll have access to important details with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4’s sleep tracking.

This is one of many features that have the Galaxy Watch 4 on track to become one of the best Android smartwatches you can buy. Samsung says the improved sleep tracking on the Galaxy Watch 4 is designed to help users manage their overall sleep quality.

As usual, your wearable will offer a full picture of your rest quality with a close look at your sleep patterns throughout the night. However, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is providing even greater detail this time around. Now, your compatible smartphone has the ability to detect the sound of your snores, which will be factored into your device’s sleep tracking.

As you may know, your smartwatch is also equipped to measure your blood oxygen saturation levels while you sleep. When you combine this data with the advanced Sleep Scores you receive on your watch, you’ll be able to learn more about your sleep patterns so you can work on getting better rest.

What Do Sleep Trackers Monitor

A wide variety of sleep trackers have hit the market, with more beingreleased all the time. Many are wearable trackers that you can strap toyour wrist. Others clip on your pillow or sit on your bedside table.

Features of these devices vary, but some common capabilities include:

  • Sleep duration: By tracking the time youre inactive, the devices can record when you fall asleep at night and when you stir in the morning.
  • Sleep quality: Trackers can detect interrupted sleep, letting you know when youre tossing and turning or waking during the night.
  • Sleep phases: Some tracking systems track the phases of your sleep and time your alarm to go off during a period when youre sleeping less deeply. In theory, that makes it easier for you to rouse.
  • Environmental factors: Some devices record environmental factors like the amount of light or temperature in your bedroom.
  • Lifestyle factors: Some trackers prompt you to enter information about activities that can affect sleep, such as how much caffeine youve had, when youve eaten or whether your stress level is high.

What Does a Typical Sleep Cycle Look Like?

During a typical night, you cycle through various stages of sleep:

This cycle repeats every 90 to 110 minutes. As sleep progresses, REM cyclesincrease in length.

How To Measure Your Stress Levels

Keep track of your stress. The Galaxy Watch 4 can measure your stress levels for fitness and wellness purposes.

  • Open the Samsung Health app and tap Stress.
  • Tap Measure. Once the recording is complete, your current stress level results will be displayed.
  • From your results screen, swipe up to access breathing exercises for help reducing stress. Choose the number of breath cycles you would like to complete and tap Breath to begin. A pulsing design and basic prompts will guide you through the exercise.

    Switch The Silent Mode On

Samsung Galaxy Watch update brings sleep tracking ...

To ensure you sleep well, your alarms and other notifications must be set on silent mode. For the Samsung Gear S3, there are a few settings you need to tweak. You can do it on the watch itself or your phone app.

    1. Do Not Disturb Mode

Turning off the Do Not Disturb setting will switch off all your notifications except for your alarm.

    On Your Watch
  • Open the Quick Settings panel.
  • Tap the Do Not Disturb icon and turn it on.
  • You may also:

  • Tap Do Not Disturb mode and turn it on.
  • If you want to have a schedule for your Do Not Disturb setting, you should:

  • After switching on the Do Not Disturb setting, tap Set Schedule.
  • Set up your start time, end time, and days.
  • Tap Done.
  • If you have set the Do Not Disturb on your watch, you no longer have to change the settings on your phone. All you need to do is sync the setting from your phone to your watch. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Open the Galaxy Wearable app.
  • Tap Home.
  • Tap Sync Do Not Disturb.
  • On Phone App

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Open your Galaxy Wearable app.
  • Tap the Home menu, and then the Advanced menu.
  • Tap Do Not Disturb.
  • If you want to have a schedule for your Do Not Disturb setting, you should:

  • After switching on the Do Not Disturb setting, tap Set Schedule.
  • Set up your start time, end time, and days.
  • Tap Done.
  • These settings will automatically sync to your Samsung Gear S3 watch.

    Monitoring Your Sleep Habits

If you have a wearable device such as the Samsung Gear S then, it is important to understand that this type of device has a gyroscope which can detect any movement, even when you are sleeping. Needless to say, before you go to sleep, wear your Samsung watch and connect it to your smartphone. Tap on the Samsung Health app and click sleep.

Subsequently, you will be asked to read some information related to measuring your sleep when you use it for the first time. To use it, just tap OK and then tap where it says Record sleep, after you wake up, tap Im awake so it will stop recording your sleeping pattern.

Galaxy Watch Sleep Tracking Now Has Dedicated Toggle For Rem Sleep

The Galaxy Watch also has a separate toggle for enabling or disabling REM sleep recording with the latest update. Continuous heart rate monitoring will probably give you a better idea of how much REM sleep youre getting each night, because the heart beats faster during REM sleep. But having heart rate monitoring set to frequent will mean reduced battery usage overnight, even though it might be at the expense of the accuracy of REM sleep tracking.

To access the REM sleep recording toggle, scroll to and tap the sleep tracking widget on the watch, then tap the three-dot button on the right and tap the Settings option. REM sleep tracking will be enabled by default once the Galaxy Watch update is installed, but you can disable it using the toggle if you wish.

How To Use Sleep As Android With Galaxy Watch

Your Samsung Galaxy Watch comes with a reasonably good sleep tracking. However, whenever I spend some time on my bed watching movies or reading Kindle, the native sleep tracker is not able to differentiate these activities from actual sleeping. And the fact that you cant edit your sleep time, just make it even worse.

Thankfully, you can use third-party sleep tracking apps like the popular Sleep as Android with your Galaxy Watch. This not only can differentiate between lying lethargically in bed to actual sleeping but also give you an in-depth analysis of your sleep pattern, REM cycle, and smart alarm, etc. The only caveat is, unlike the native sleep tracking, its not automatic, which means, every time you go to bed youll have to manually turn on the sleep tracking.

To get started, you need to install Sleep as Android app on your watch as well as your smartphone.

Lets start with the Galaxy Watch first. On your Galaxy watch, go to Galaxy App store > Apps > Health and Fitness and download Sleep as Android app. Alternatively, you can click on this link to directly download it on your Samsung phone.

Once done, now you need to download the Sleep as Android app on your Android smartphone from the Google Play store. Its free and contains minimal banner ads.

Sleep tracking with a watch. Galaxy Watch 4 or the Fitbit Sense Advice from a Physician

If your Samsung galaxy watch shows your sleep data but isnt syncing that sleep information to the Health app, take a look at some settings on your phone and watch.

                  • Turn Battery Saver and power savings mode off on your phone.
                  • Disable airplane mode.
                  • Turn off any power savings mode on your watch.
                  • If you check all those things, try these troubleshooting tips:

                    • Check for an update for the Watch, Wearable app, and Samsung Health app.
                    • Restart both devices
                    • Try forcing a manual sync
                    • Open the Samsung Health app on your phone.
                    • Select the Menu button and choose Settings.
                    • Tap Sync with Samsung account, then choose Sync now.
                  • Uninstall and re-install the Samsung Health app.

What If I Have A Smartwatch

As indicated by Samsung, Samsung Health records and manages your 24-hour activity and sleeping patterns to cultivate a healthy habit. When connecting your Galaxy Watch Active to your mobile devices, you can save and manage the health-related data on the Samsung Health app. When you exercise for more than 10 minutes while wearing the Galaxy Watch Active, it will display an encouraging message.

Consequently, after one hour of inactivity, your Galaxy Watch will notify you and show you some stretching motions to follow. If you are asleep, Samsung Health will analyse your sleeping pattern and record it by measuring your heart rate.

A graph will appear with your sleeping patterns and the average sleeping patterns of people in the same age group as you. However, if your heart rate shows irregular patterns then, your Watch wont be able to recognise your heart rate properly. Additionally, remember to activate the Record REM sleep switch to activate it by going into Settings in your device.

How Does The Samsung Health App Measure Sleep

The Samsung health app measures sleep by monitoring your sleep habits. This means that the Samsung wearable devices such as the Samsung Gear S, have an internal gyroscope inside. The gyroscope is meant to detect movement, even when you are asleep. Before going to sleep, make sure you connect your device to your smartphone.

Why Is The Galaxy Watch Sleep Tracking Accuracy So Bad

The Samsung Galaxy Watch relies a lot on movement to determine when you are sleeping and how you are sleeping.

The thing is that just because you are standing still doesnt mean that you are sleeping. Many people lay still on the bed to watch TV, Netflix, or listen to music/podcasts.

If the watch doesnt have available methods of accurately tracking biometrics such as heart rate, it may think that you are taking a nap. Not to mention people who move a lot in their sleep and AI accuracy. So, your mileage in terms of accuracy may vary.

Now we know all about sleep stages, and the sleep stages that Samsung Health uses. I mentioned that your movement and heart rate are used, but now lets get into more detail now that we know about the sleep stages.

First, here is what Samsung says:

Your watch automatically records your sleep based on your movement. You can turn on Record REM sleep on your watch to track the 4 stages of sleep: when youre awake, REM, light and deep.

The Record REM sleep option was deprecated in 2020, although the last updated timestamp on the Samsung page was in January 2021 at the time this article was written. I guess they forgot to update that part. So, dont go looking for that option. Its not there. Samsung didnt make any official announcement, other than that they were pushing out an update to Samsung Health. However, users started asking about the option, as can be seen on this Reddit thread here, and as seen below.

Samsung, in a straight-forward manner, tells us they use movement. We also know they use heart-rate based on previously functions that are no longer available, such as the REM sleep option.

                    What About The Sleep Score

Its worth keeping in mind that the sleep score doesnt simply reflect how much you sleep. The overall quality of your sleep is just as important as the length.

For example, 8 hours of sleep with very little deep sleep and REM sleep may be lower than 7 hours with sufficient deep sleep and REM sleep scores.

Galaxy Watch Active2 and Watch3 both have the ability to track your sleep when you wear your watch to bed. It can track the different sleep stages, including REM sleep, and provide insight in your sleep quality on a nightly basis.

It gives you a sleep score, based on the duration of your sleep, in addition to motion and heart rate data it measures while you’re in bed. To get started tracking your sleeping patterns, go to your apps tray and open Samsung Health. Tap on Sleep and there you can see all your sleep tracking information. When you’re ready for bed, tap Start to begin the tracking to see if you’re getting a restful night’s sleep.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Vs Apple Watch Series 6

These two watches accompany specific phone models and there are ZERO smartphones where you could have a choice of running either watch. The comparison is still worth making. The Apple Watch 6 is the King of smartwatches, does the Watch4 steal the crown?

                    • Price & Value: Samsung wins
                    • Hardware Quality: Apple Wins with a better case and strap although, with Gorilla DX+ glass, the Samsung touchscreen is tougher than the soft screen on the aluminium case Apple Watches. Apples health and fitness sensors are superior and more precise.
                    • Choice of apps Apple edges it. They both have a similar choice
                    • Aesthetics & Interface Samsung wins with a better physical screen and a more modern-looking interface. The Apple interface is superbly functional but, in my opinion, its both a little outdated and a little naive in its aesthetic design.
                    • User Experience Apple wins. The Apple experience just feels more thought-through, with every fine point of detail just slightly better. Apple seems finished whereas Samsung is great but a blank screen here, a missed connection there and a glitch somewhere else just make you think itll be better in 6 months time.

                    Samsung Health Sleep Stages

Data recorded by your watch is stored in the Samsung Health app. This is an app on your watch, as well as your phone. Data is automatically uploaded from your watch to your phone.

The Samsun Health app records sleep in four different stages: Awake, Light, Deep, and REM. Youve probably already realized that this doesnt exactly match up to the actual sleep stages Ive already described. Here is a description of each stage, and how the line-up to the real sleep stages.

Awake: Times when your awake at night, whether you are aware of it or not. This does not correlate to any of the sleep stages.

Light: Times when you have just fallen asleep to when you are in actual light sleep. This stage includes both stage 1 and stage 2 sleep stages.

Deep: Times when you are in a deep sleep. This stage directly lines up with sleep stage 3, your deepest sleep before reaching REM.

REM: Known as Rapid Eye Movement, this is the deepest sleep stage though your body becomes more active. Characterized by moving of the eyes, your heart rate also picks up and varies, but your brain paralyzes your muscles making you very still.

This sleep stage directly matches with the REM stage previously described.
