How To Track Sleep On Apple Watch – Is Apple Health DETAILED Enough?
  • Open the Health app, tap Browse at bottom of the screen, then tap Sleep. If you have Sleep favorited, you can access it from the Summary page in the Health app.
  • Tap Edit under the sleep schedule in Next.
  • Drag the curved slider to set Bedtime and Wake Up times. The slider turns orange if the schedule does not meet your sleep goal.
  • Tap Wake Up Alarm to turn on the alarm and adjust your alarm sound, volume, and haptics.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.
  • You can also adjust your sleep schedule for the next day from the Clock app.

    What Can You Track On Apple Health

    A lot is the simple answer. One thing to be clear of is that Apple Health isn’t capable of tracking anything on its own. This is all about pulling in that information from the device it’s installed on, compatible third party apps and devices.

    To give you a flavour, Apple Health can store data including:

    • Steps
    • Weight

    These are all listed as Health Categories in the Browse section of the app.

    When you expand those different categories, you’ll find most recent data tracked dependent on devices and apps pushing data to it.

    In many instances where you might not currently be tracking a particular piece of data, Apple does make app recommendations that work with Health to help you start to do that.

Regardless, Apples guideline was simple: Put the watch on your wrist each morning, dont worry about battery life all day, then place it on a charger each night, and repeat ad infinitum.

    Given that the company has had five years to prepare for the addition of sleep tracking which obviously requires users to wear their Watch overnight Apple could have boosted battery life any year with a bigger housing or more power-efficient parts to enable multiday run times. Some competitors have made those choices, relying heavily on longer run times to differentiate their devices. Apple instead decided to market its way around design compromises, recently floating the idea that users should recharge their Watches during morning showers.

    Track Your Sleep With Apple Watch

    With the Sleep app on Apple;Watch, you can create bedtime schedules to help you meet your sleep goals. Wear your watch to bed, and Apple;Watch can track your sleep. When you wake up, open the Sleep app to learn how much sleep you got and see your sleep trends over the past 14 days.

    If your Apple;Watch is charged less than 30 percent before you go to bed, youre prompted to charge it. In the morning, just glance at the greeting to see how much charge remains.

    You can create multiple schedulesfor example, one for weekdays and another for weekends. For each schedule, you can set up the following:

    • A sleep goal

    • What time you want to go to bed and wake up

    • An alarm sound to wake you up

    • When to turn on sleep mode, which limits distractions before you go to bed and protects your sleep after youre in bed

    • Sleep tracking, which uses your motion to detect sleep when Apple;Watch is in sleep mode and worn to bed

    Tip: To exit sleep mode, first turn the Digital Crown to unlock. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap .

    How Do I Turn Off Apples Sleep App And Just Use Autosleep

    You can easily turn off the Apple Sleep app. It is similar to the steps above in the Watch Settings and Health Settings but we are going to disable all the options instead of just the select few. Follow these steps:

    • Open the Watch Settings App on your iPhone

    • Select ‘Sleep’ from the list of apps

    • Toggle OFF all the options including ‘Turn On Automatically’, ‘Show Time’, ‘Track Sleep with Apple Watch’ and ‘Charging Reminders’

    • Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select ‘Open Sleep Options in Health’, this will redirect you to the Health app

    • Toggle OFF the ‘Sleep Schedule’ option

    • You have now disabled the Apple Sleep app. Remember for those with multiple Watches, to do this from the Watch you wear to bed. If you wear both Watches to bed, apply the same settings to both.

    How Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Works

    Apple’s sleep tracking integrates with the existing Bedtime feature on the iPhone’s Clock app , so you turn it on and create a schedule.

    Before your allocated bedtime you’ll be ‘prepared’ for sleep with a wind-down time while your Apple Watch becomes dimmed and locked – your Watch is now in ‘Sleep Mode’.

    Do Not Disturb is automatically turned on but you can disable this either when you set up Sleep or afterwards.;

    You can also choose whether or not to have charging reminders – the watch will warn you within an hour of bedtime if you have less than 30 percent charge.

    If you have a Series 4 or 5 you’ll almost certainly be OK to go through the night if you charged for a bit during the day at some point. With Series 3, you will need to fully charge in the day to last the night.;

    In Sleep Mode, you need to turn the digital crown to unlock the watch just as you do when you step out of water after swimming. We actually find this a bit irritating when we need to get up in the night and use the torch, for example.;

    You can disable Sleep Mode if you want, but this won’t track sleep. You can also opt out of sleep tracking entirely, even if you have Sleep Mode enabled.;

    You can access Sleep options and tracking in various places, which is somewhat confusing at first but does make sense because it ties several things together. So:;

    If you are all about step tracking, Apple Health does that by using the accelerometer motion sensor inside of your iPhone to track movement. That’s the same motion sensor tech that’s used by smartwatches and fitness trackers.

    If you wear a fitness tracker or smartwatch , those devices can be alternatively used to provide your step counter as long as they are compatible with Apple Health.

    It’s important to note that Fitbit and Samsung devices aren’t compatible with Apple Health, however, most other wearables are.

    Does The Apple Watch Have Enough Battery To Track Sleep

    Battery life has been pointed to as a reason why Apple might have been reluctant to offer its own sleep tracking app in the past. Apple still states an 18 hour battery life for its smartwatch, which hasnt changed since the first Watch. Any battery improvements have been canceled out by features like the Apple Watch 5s always-on screen.

    To make sure you have enough battery to track sleep through the night, Apple requires your watch to be charged to at least 30% to enable it.;

    If you dont, the Watch will prompt you to charge before going to bed. When its got enough juice, your phone will alert you that its ready to join you in bed. In our time we found that sleep tracking sucked up around 20% battery on average, so its definitely going to impact how much battery youre left with in the morning.

    Who Should Get This

    Everyone sleeps, but sleep trackers arent for everyone. Personal sleep tracking is a new sciencethe app makers havent nailed accurate readings yet, and the apps are often not great at telling a typical user what to do with the results. In fact, as W. Chris Winter, MD, author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It, said, quoting a pessimistic colleague, The best thing that trackers have allowed us to do is admire our problems.

    We wouldnt say we like admiring our problems, but we do like to know where we standand, considering the popularity of health trackers, plenty of other people feel the same way. As a result, sleep-tracking apps work best for people who are only casually looking for clues as to how they might sleep better at night and emerge the next day feeling energized.

    If youre an elite athlete, a marine officer, or an airline pilot for whom sleep analysis could make or break your career, these apps are not for you. If you think you might have sleep apnea and are hoping that your phone will save you from a night in a sleep clinic, these apps are also not for you.

    Everyone sleeps, but sleep trackers arent for everyone.

    Apples Wind Down Is Better Than Its Sleep Tracking

    Though Im not thrilled with the sleep tracking functionality, Apple did a nice job with a related set of watchOS 7 and iOS 14 features called Wind Down. Rather than just telling you how much you slept, Wind Down provides a holistic approach to weaning you off your phone at night, softly encouraging you to settle down before a full Do Not Disturb regime kicks in.

    If you prefer to use apps to relax, you can create iOS shortcuts specific to settling down, such as turning on a music playlist or podcast, opening an app for reading or journaling, or accessing apps for yoga and meditation. These shortcuts will appear on the iPhones Lock Screen so youre reminded to use them, and you can also initiate a watchOS Wind Down sleep mode that begins however many minutes you prefer before your scheduled bedtime.

    These kinds of features may seem simple to implement, but theyre actually thoughtful, OS-level integrations that show how sleep tracking functionality could become part of a larger sleep management experience for some users.     The Apple Watch also doesnt include hardware specifically designed to track sleep. To get an accurate reading, a device has to measure brain activity. Obviously, thats not the case here, as an Apple watch relies on various built-in technologies to create a general analysis. This data includes inactivity and your heart rate.

    Wind Down And Sleep Mode

    Sleep Mode is a new setting that starts to reduce the amount of interactions the iPhone and Apple Watch will have with the user. This includes turning on Do Not Disturb to minimize calls, messages, and notifications. The screen of devices will also be dimmed down automatically, to be less of a distraction to the user when they should be sleeping.

    Wind Down is a feature that can perform actions within the Apple ecosystem that can encourage users to go to sleep. Automatically running a period of time before the user is set to go to sleep, Wind Down can automatically trigger Shortcuts to take place, such as playing music to help a user relax, before engaging Sleep Mode.
